Stopped by on Good Friday for a late lunch on my way home the place was empty when I got. I the young lady approached me and gave me the menu to look over, I wanted to avoid anything meat so I wanted to see their seafood selection. The picture of the camaron entomatado (shrimp in tomato sauce) looked really good so I ordered it. About ten minutes later I got my food piping hot, and my eyes could not believe it! They used real JUMBO shrimps that is really rare for these type of establishments. Well, now I'm a fan so I will return and see what other goodies they have on the menu.

Over the past six to seven months about 3-4 of us travel here or Tigris Grill in Oakton for lunch on a weekly or semi-weekly basis. In the past two months the restaurant has changed a little for the better in appearance and food selection. The food has always been great but it seems like the past month or two the lamb is much softer and the taste isn't as spicy and have a bit more flavor. The price is also good with most dishes between $6 and $10 with some combos $10-$13. It may not look like much but the food here is fantastic and the owner is really nice and a great cook!

I first tried the assorted kebabs. Unfortunately, the chicken had dried out and the kofta felt too crumbly. The chicken rice dish had quite aromatic rice but underseasoned chicken; seasoned rice alone can't substitute bland chicken drumsticks. The lamb rice dish had both aromatic rice and juicy, well seasoned lamb. I ended up combining the lamb pieces with the chicken rice. Out of curiosity, I tried a piece of their fried chicken. It proved juicy and not too oily. It would do well as a standalone appetizer in most restaurants. I also tried something that looked like lasagna, but without tomato. It tasted, to my uncultured palate, like a lasagna with some sort of cream or bechamel-like sauce. I quite enjoyed it. For dessert, my friend convinced me to try what I had initially passed over as oatmeal or tapioca pudding. The Omi Ali proved quite delectable, like a cross between bread pudding and oatmeal but with more nuanced spices and sweetness. I added it to my short list of desserts I enjoy, since I don't have much of a sweet tooth. Overall, I appreciated the breath and variety. Some hits and misses are to be expected at a homely, ethnic neighborhood style buffet.

My favorite is the lamb kabob served with a side of potatoes that makes a very full meal. At that time, the establishment only had a one other table occupied so seating occurred immediately. As I perused the menu, my focus landed on the tajins / stews. The ox tail, okra lamb, and cow feet tajins all looked delectable. I settled on the cow feet tajin ($20), served with rice. That arrived after about 10 minutes, piping hot in an earthenware bowl. Just looking at the glisten and the viscosity while spooning the stew, I could tell that the cow hocks had simmered long enough to melt and release collagen into the stew. The tendons came off the bone like the proverbial hot knife through butter. The stock proved rich in texture and flavor without overwhelming the palate. Whatever additional seasonings went into it enhanced the clear stock's savoriness without imparting a different direction to the palate. This epitomized the ostensible simplicity of a dish belying sheer time and effort to perfect a dish. As an aside, this sort of laborious effort resembled long simmered Cantonese stews that I grew up with. Hilariously enough, the only other occupied table was also an Arabic guy bringing his Asian friend along. Speaking of Arabic friends, my friend ordered the king koshary ($12) and had me try a bite. The texture contrasts of the varied grains, the crispy onions, and the savory tomato-based koshary sauce, seemed irresitible. I understood why it became a signature national dish.

The worker who served my bowl was friendly and professional. It looked very, very clean in there. It's kind of chilly in there so if you plan to sit down I'd bring a light sweater if you're sensitive to the cold. Now onto the food. I got the gyro bowl that comes with rice and a side of salad as well as tiramisu. The salad is put inside the same container as the hot food, FYI. I think it's meant to be enjoyed together! But anyways, man, all I can say is DELICIOUS. The lamb was nice and hot, flavorful, and most importantly MOIST! Nothing worse than overcooked, dry lamb. Got it with the white sauce (light and kind of tangy like some Mediterranean sauces) drizzled on top, which is bomb btw, and the salad got a green sauce that was very herby/cilantro and fresh tasting. The rice was also perfectly cooked and not dry. I have had a bite of my friend's chicken bowl before coming here (which is what prompted me to come here myself) and it was equally just as tasty. Tiramisu taste like you're basic tiramisu--which is to say mouthwatering and delectable as tiramisu always is! No complaints, 10/10 recommend.
