Fantastic food. Have been wanting to try this place since it's inception as "Over the Rice". From what I can tell, Box'd Kitchen used to be a food truck in Arlington called "Over the Rice". It seems as though they carried this name forward initially, but to my surprise at some point in the last month or so they changed the name before the opening. Regardless, I walked up today and was immediately greeted by the owner who gave me the run down on the process. I asked for chicken and they threw together a box for me. Very similar to your standard Chicago "chicken rice" dishes, and absolutely amazing. The flavor combo with the 2 homemade sauces really caught me off guard in a positive way. I would not have though that flavor profile possible. Pricing was very fair, especially taking current Charlottesville lunch cuisine into account. Roughly $9 for what I consider a medium-large amount of food. Not overly full but quite happy. I will certainly be back here. I have already told 3 of my friends about this place. The first time I went was very soon after opening so the amount/quality was great but I noticed that the times I went after that, amount/quality was not consistent (rice undercooked, sad vegetables etc). I was really craving spicy but cheap food and this is the place for that! The lamb n rice is $9 and chicken n rice is $8. Pricing it any higher would not make this place worth it. The meat was well cooked! I preferred the chicken more than the lamb bc it was more flavorful. But the lamb is still good! The white sauce is more sweet than tart. I always get the lamb box, and I've only had it through delivery. The lamb is good and tender, cut into perfect pieces, and has just the right amount of sauce on the platter. The side salad is fresh and a nice addition. Good, fresh, and fast meal to go. read more

I go here every so often since I live in one of the apartments nearby. Every time I go here I've had a positive experience. Food is tasty, nothing to write home about but it's definitely a solid and tasty meal for what you pay for. I usually get the chicken or falafel with rice, so I can only speak for those dishes though. On my most recent visit, it wasn't too crowded so I walked in to place my order and was walking out the door with my food less than 5 minutes later. Cook is really fast and that's the best part about this place, since I only go here for takeout. Overall a worthwhile and tasty place for a bite to eat. read more

My sister and I tried Box'd Kitchen on a whim... we just found our new favorite fast casual spot in Charlottesville. I got the Lamb Wrap and she got the Falafel w/rice salad. Together it was $18 and came with complimentary water bottles. The portions were HUGE! The quality was top notch. Coming from DC and loving Amsterdam Falafel, I have high expectations for falafel. Box'd Kitchen is a great addition to Charlottesville! Although it is on the pricier side, I think it's definitely worth it. It's also a bit far from UVA's Grounds, but if you're ever in that area and want a quick meal, this is the perfect place. I ordered the lamb over rice and it was delicious! I loved the tenderness of the lamb and the refreshing salad that came on the side. The sauce was also very rich and tasty as well. Even the rice was fragrant and mixed well with the sauce and lamb. I really like Box'd Kitchen, their dishes are full of flavor and filling. I wish, though, that they had a bigger variety of items on their menu. For example, the majority of the menu is one dish (basmati rice, salad, and your choice of meat) and then they have a gyro option as well. Very solid good food. The meat is juicy and flavorful. The dill sauce is refreshing. The spicy sauce gives a good punch without being overpowering. This shop is in the same vain as CAVA and Roots. The sauce is perhaps is little too ranchy and could stand to be more yogurty. read more

This place is always slow, but they haven't adjusted anything about their business model to accommodate when it's busy. I hate to be the first person to write a more negative review, but I truly thought the food here was average at best. I do really think the owners are incredibly friendly and I think the food has a lot of potential, but when I visited within the first few days of opening, there was much to be desired. The food itself is essentially inspired by the Halal Guys (at least that's what I think)/mediterranean flavors. I bought the chicken & rice and my S.O. bought the lamb & rice. Both meats and the rice were very lukewarm. Granted, we walked 2 blocks before eating, but I don't think that was enough time to cool down the food that significantly. The chicken itself was good in flavor and was not dry. However the lamb had a generic flavor to it and was quite dry. The rice felt undercook and although it was a lovely yellow color, it did not feel like there was any actual flavor to it. The meal comes with a salad on the side which you can choose whatever base you want (kale, artisan greens, lettuce) and toppings (chickpeas, tomatoes, etc.). I appreciated this as I always enjoy some fresh greens. However, the onions were cut much too thick and were so raw it was difficult to eat them. The sauces themselves were very tasty! Be warned that their spicy sauce is truly spicy. Price wise, it's okay, the boxes are $9-10+ depending on what meat you get. Perhaps we are just getting what we paid for. Perhaps we just caught them on an off day. But for a Friday night with no one was in the restaurant, it was shocking to receive cold food and just felt like we were getting yesterday's leftovers. This place used to be my favorite to eat but the new owner has gotten very cheap. They are overcharging for the same food. They have raised the prices and made the food containers smaller. The meat is burnt and has a very bad taste. The old owner would give customers extra sauce for free to be nice, the new owner wants to charge for a small container of extra sauce. The lamb was well seasoned, the sauces it came with were delicious (with just the right amount of spiciness), and even the rice was perfect. AMAZING! Thirty minutes after arriving in VA, I ventured from my Charlottesville hotel in search of lunch. I'm SO GLAD I walked beyond the pizza chain and a few other restaurants and found Box'd Kitchen!!! Truly one of the most delicious meals I've ever had. You select the protein (chicken, lamb, pork and beef if memory serves) of your choice and it then placed on top of perfectly cooked yellow rice snuggled next to a fresh salad, all dressed with home made sauces. I chose lamb and it was dressed with Greek Z sauce, pita slices and another delicious spicy sauce (varying degrees of spice and kick). Oh! The service is extraordinary as well! I absolutely love this place!! No complaints with the food, however the young college male working on 04/24/2021 who gave me my food should definitely work on his customer service skills. Being that parking is limited and I literally drove around the block twice looking for parking, I walked into the establishment at 10:00pm and was told to order earlier as if he was my father. For one, I ordered in the window to order online and for two, not everyone that orders from this restaurant lives across the street. Work on your people skills. These kids kill me. Meals come with a hefty portion of salad/mixed greens beside perfectly cooked basmati rice, topped with seasoned meat or veggies of your choosing and drizzled with various sauces. I've had the lamb (twice), which is sliced and gently charred; I'll undoubtedly try the other options sometime soon. This restaurant is worthless. Go somewhere else. Anywhere else. If there was a negative star rating I would give it to this establishment. Operates off the chaos theory of restaurant management. They will get your order incorrect or forget to actually pass the order to the kitchen until you remind them 20 minutes later. I stumbled upon this place as I was perusing Uber Eats/Door Dash one night about halfway through quarantine. I had exhausted my usual spots and was desperate for something new. And the rest is history! Seriously, this is one of the best places in town for a quick, healthy, delicious lunch. I think I ordered it every week for three months. The chicken over rice is so dang good. The salad is so fresh and the sauces are so flavorful (especially the white one!) Just the right amount of spice. My mom loves the falafel. I was visiting my newphew at UVA with my sister few weeks ago. He insisted that we had to eat at Box'd Kitchen. I have to say, the food was AMAZING...... I never had anything like this. I ordered Chicken and rice, chicken was so well seasoned, juicy and rice was cooked really well with great flavor. It came with fresh salad. I also thought the price was great.
