This is a solid Chinese restaurant if you are looking for fairly good Chinese food in Charlottesville with a sit down area. The food is of decent quality. While I enjoyed my rice, onions, and egg, the chicken in my chicken fried rice was very dry and bland. Everything else was flavorful and the service was very good. My girlfriend ordered the vegetable fried rice and enjoyed it except the vegetables were too large resulting in little rice. The Red Lantern has tasty, well-portioned takeout food for a decent price. I was more than satisfied with the General Tso's Chicken and Sesame Chicken my fiancée and I ordered. The rice didn't taste like cheap-o quick rice, and the egg rolls were made in-house. Granted, it's still takeout, so don't go in expecting this to be a life-changing American-Chinese experience. I have not ordered delivery from here before, just pickup and we placed the order 5 mins away from the restaurant and it was hot and ready when we arrived. We were surprised how quick the service was, but it sounds like they do much better with takeout than they do with delivery based on the other reviews. We thought the prices were super similar to Hong Kong (which is our usual go to) but these portions were MASSIVE! The lo mein was fantastic, the general Tsos was similarly great. The BEST Lo mein I've ever had!! There was so much flavor and the texture was perfect. I also really enjoyed the spring rolls. The vegetable fried rice was all right (not much flavor), so definitely go for the lo mein instead. Broccoli with garlic sauce was tasty as well! Although this used to be one of my favorite spots to get Chinese in Charlottesville now I will not go back. My coworkers and I ordered a meal from here and it started to take a really long time to get delivered. When we called to ask they said it was on the way and it still took a while. Finally when it arrived and we unbagged it our take out boxes they were all melted together. We were so frustrated because we had waited so long and then couldn't eat the food. We called and they refused to give us a refund and they said they would give us two meal credits (we had ordered four meals) and we reluctantly agreed. We asked how to redeem them and if they'd need our names and they said no. When I tried ordering again and redeeming those credits they said they didn't exist. Needless to say I didn't think the food was worth the hassle. I would try somewhere else. read more

My family and I were in town for vacation and stayed at a hotel near the University of Virginia due to a snow storm . The food was delicious and amazing. It was very fresh and they give you plenty of it, they also delivered the food to us with snow, rain and all. Tasty Americanized Chinese food. The food is made to order with fresh ingredients and generous portions. I particularly like their general tso's chicken and eggplant in garlic sauce. You can choose between white, brown, or fried rice. They're open for take out and delivery during the COVID 19 restrictions and everything is very hygienic in the restaurant. This has been our go-to delivery Chinese food restaurant this past year. There are other restaurants in the area that we really enjoy but for the combination of quality, choice, flavor, and on-time delivery we enjoy Red Lantern. When placing a take-out order they are the only Chinese restaurant in the area that I have experienced really reading and following the extra requests (e.g." please make extra spicy", "please include 6 sets of chopsticks", "only put the sauce on the side" (!!! - that one is huge for us) The food is always tasty and moist. I especially like their vegetable lo mein which they can add extra veg to (yum!) The fried rice is also especially good (and not dry!) So many choices on the menu and while we have our favorites we have tried many things and have not been disappointed. Love Red Lantern! read more

The Red Lantern did not disappoint - my husband and I ordered for lunch on a Sunday some lunch specials and appetizers and everything was absolutely delicious. I liked that we could choose what kind of rice to have with the combo (not just white rice - brown or fried as well!) and soup or an egg roll for a great price. We also tried the rangoons which were fine, not amazing, but the steamed dumplings were awesome! We'll definitely be saving this as a good takeout option. Great Chinese food. What I like most is they know not to overcook vegetables. Almost all Chinese food is loaded with salt, but the Latern seems to hold back a touch which is just right.
