    Rollwiches
    Matthew L.

Box Lunch is a gourmet sandwich shop that opened in Wellfleet, Massachusetts in 1977. It was founded by former schoolteacher Owen MacNutt. When he heard of a new restaurant space that went up for rent, Owen decided to open a new eatery to supplement his teacher income. By the end of his first summer, Box Lunch had earned him twice the amount of money he made from a whole year of teaching. Owen left his teaching job and focused on his sandwich shop full-time. During this time period, pita sandwiches were very popular. Owen decided to abandon the standard pita design, and instead sliced the bread lengthwise and rolled everything from peas to peanuts inside the flat chunk. These new pita sandwiches didn't fall apart and customers liked the change. The "Roll-wich" was born! By the mid-'80s, Owen began to franchise the Box Lunch name all over Cape Cod. His wife Kathy took over management of the flagship location, and he focused his time on opening new locations and testing new Rollwich combos. Owen passed away in 2016. Today there are three Box Lunch locations: Wellfleet (original), Truro and Provincetown. My wife and I have visited Box Lunch multiple times over the years whenever we have visited Cape Cod. We visited the Eastham location several times, but it has since closed. On our most recent visit to the Cape, we decided to visit the original Wellfleet location. We decided to order a couple of Rollwiches to take to the beach for a picnic lunch. We ordered the 'Gilded Lobster' (Lobster Salad, Melted Swiss, Mayo and Avocado) and the 'Wild Turkey' (Turkey Breast, Melted Swiss and Provolone, Avocado, Tomatoes, Onions, Hot Banana Peppers and Mayo). We decided to share them; they were both delicious!! Much cleaner than a standard pita and just as (if not more) flavorful. We'll continue to get rollwiches at Box Lunch for years and years!

Cheap and easy. The wraps I've had were good. It's very simple and traditional.

C'est excellent! Our large group enjoyed happy hour several times over the Dec/Jan holiday break…read more On our first visit, 5 of us wandered in looking for a few drinks and appetizers. For our second visit, our group expanded to 10; mostly drinks and appys, our proto-adult kids ordered dinner. (They're no fools, Dad was paying). As we were leaving, that second time, we reserved a table for the next night. Our group expanded to over15 for our third visit. Here's where I have to tell you - the staff were amazing! Friendly, calm, fast, and flexible with our expanding group. The food and drinks were all excellent. The raw oysters could only have been fresher if we'd been on the boat. Should you find yourself in the area, you'd do well to visit The Wicked Oyster.

Sometimes I struggle with the limitations of star-rating when writing Yelp reviews. I teeter-totter…read morebetween 3 and 4...4 and 5...and wish that I could award half stars; that I could hedge my bets and half commit. That was not the case with The Wicked Oyster. On a chilled November evening, my family tucked ourselves into the warmth of The Wicked Oyster for a meal we're already reminiscing about only 24-hours later. Chosen for their namesake, we ordered six raw oysters upon arrival. This was my mom and brother's first raw oyster, and they became converts upon first slurp. Though I know they're spoiled to have such exceptional oysters as their first, I don't begrudge them the experience. That initial serving of oysters went down with such rave reviews, we were left with no other choice but to expedite a repeat order. To start, I crunched on the Little Gem Salad and dreamt of slathering every meal in it's sherry mustard vinaigrette. It was just the thing to occupy my mind and palate in anticipation of the main course. Diagnosed with a "Hankering For Red Meat," I chose the 8oz Hanger Streak (pictured.) If I could pen this entry in drool, I would. The meal was sublime on every count. I wanted to linger, to draw out the night as long as possible. But all good things must come to and end, and so must our night at The Wicked Oyster. Played out by a live cellist (!), we floated to the car with leftovers in hand, dreaming of a restaurant like this at home, while thankful for the preservation of memory. The Wicked Oyster will live on in our minds, hearts, and stomachs for years to come...

So sad to see the bakery close. While the bistro/restaurant will keep going and expand, the bakery…read morewas where it was at. Apparently, the owner wanted to re-focus on that part of the business. *shrug* I used to come here around opening and see a lengthy line. The croissants are some of the best in the area. The plain croissant is flaky and light. The ham & cheese croissant is more of a croque monsieur and it's a pretty substantial offering, full of cheese, ham, and béchamel sauce. The individual tarts (lemon, raspberry, etc.) and cakes are beautifully designed and are appropriately sweet. The tart crusts were legit. I'll miss coming here for pastries/desserts. Maybe I'll try the bistro when it opens, but now I've found a new spot on the Cape for French patisserie and viennoiserie items.
