The sandwiches are decent but very thin. There is not a lot of substance to them especially for the price. The biggest complaint is the service the two older women are rude, as if they are doing you a favor. I have experienced this on more than one occasion. It is to the point where I do not want to give them my business any longer. I will gladly travel to the Truro location where the sandwiches are better and most importantly the service. Box Lunch is always a treat to stop at on the Cape, as it's been a family tradition well before my time. They are well famous for their sandwiches, with so many choices of toppings (check the menu), which are freshly cooked and well prepared. John Alden is/has been my go to every time and I don't know if I'll ever go with something else, because it's so delicious. They also provide breakfast as well, and of course lunch, but not dinner. If only there was a Box Lunch back at home, that would be amazing. It's recommended to call ahead of time to place your order, if not, that's not a problem. Waiting usually takes 5 - 10 minutes without calling ahead. There are some tables if you choose to eat in, although, they are well known for take out. Used to be great. This visit the place was full of flies, mostly walking on the open-air food. We did order (with silent prayers) and the rollwiches were half empty and not very good. The flies did not bother the workers who had the door open (on a chilly October day) Yuck. Oh, and the parking is a few spaces in front of the tiny joint directly next to the busy(esque) road. Box Lunch is a gourmet sandwich shop that opened in Wellfleet, Massachusetts in 1977. It was founded by former schoolteacher Owen MacNutt. When he heard of a new restaurant space that went up for rent, Owen decided to open a new eatery to supplement his teacher income. By the end of his first summer, Box Lunch had earned him twice the amount of money he made from a whole year of teaching. Owen left his teaching job and focused on his sandwich shop full-time. During this time period, pita sandwiches were very popular. Owen decided to abandon the standard pita design, and instead sliced the bread lengthwise and rolled everything from peas to peanuts inside the flat chunk. These new pita sandwiches didn't fall apart and customers liked the change. The "Roll-wich" was born! By the mid-'80s, Owen began to franchise the Box Lunch name all over Cape Cod. His wife Kathy took over management of the flagship location, and he focused his time on opening new locations and testing new Rollwich combos. Owen passed away in 2016. Today there are three Box Lunch locations: Wellfleet (original), Truro and Provincetown. My wife and I have visited Box Lunch multiple times over the years whenever we have visited Cape Cod. We visited the Eastham location several times, but it has since closed. On our most recent visit to the Cape, we decided to visit the original Wellfleet location. We decided to order a couple of Rollwiches to take to the beach for a picnic lunch. We ordered the 'Gilded Lobster' (Lobster Salad, Melted Swiss, Mayo and Avocado) and the 'Wild Turkey' (Turkey Breast, Melted Swiss and Provolone, Avocado, Tomatoes, Onions, Hot Banana Peppers and Mayo). We are out of towners. Shocked? Not in this area of the Cape. We were hungry and stopped almost on a whim. Wow. The sandwiches were exactly what we wanted. I don't remember the name of mine but I had some sort of veggie thing. All and a wrap. It was so good. Hubby had clam chowder and some sandwich that I can't remember. And that was amazing as well. It was really busy too for Saturday afternoon. Shockingly honestly because we had already missed the lunch rush. Back at the Box Lunch after a year. Now with COVID-19, you have to call in your orders and they typically will be ready for pick up within 15-20 minutes. Consistently good I love Box Lunch. It's the perfect lunch spot-it's quick, healthy, and delicious always. Call them on the phone for pick up so you don't have to wait in the line for your sandwiches. They have cold and hot sandwiches, but I like the hot ones more in general. My favorite is Gilded Lily, which is composed of crab salad, veggies, and mayo. My boyfriend gets a California Dreamer everyday. The cheese is melted perfectly, and I always steal a few bites each time :) The place has frWiFi for the public, and is dog friendly as far as I know. All in all, Box Lunch is an affordable place for a quick bite for a small or large group. P.s. they used to have a location in Eastham, and it still shows up on Yelp as Box Lunch. But it is NOT the same chain anymore and the rollwiches there are not nearly as good. Go to the one in Wellfleet, Provincetown or Truro instead! read more

Perhaps the best The Box Lunch is a little place that has been sitting here for decades. It used to be kind of a dumpy but in a nice way sort of place but they remodeled not too long ago and now it's quaint, casual and homey. The Box Lunch is open all year long but really can crowded in the summer and sometimes has long lines. Fortunately it's a very pleasant place to wait for your food and the lines usually move pretty quickly. The Box Lunch has a few tables and chairs but most of the business is take out and since it is only a short walk to Wellfleet Center it's convenient to get to. For such a small place they have quite a cool and interesting menu. Almost every place in New England claims to have the best lobster roll, best clam chowder or best something. And since taste is so subjective it's pretty much all hyperbole. However the last the time we were at the Box Lunch we ordered our favorite things and then on a whim decided to get some clam chowder. The woman behind the counter looked me in the eye and smiled and said, "it's the best in the world". She wasn't making a joke, she was dead serious. I've had a whole lot of chowder in my life, some good, some bad and most somewhere in between. This chowder was filled with clams and had a wonderful flavor. I don't know if the chowder at the Box Lunch is actually the best in the world but it definitely is the best I've ever had. read more

Love the BL! I like that every one of them has it's own personality, while the menu stays the same at each one. The rollwiches are all tasty and freshly made (although truth be told, the flatbread can be a weensy bit stale some days!) with interesting little bits of add-ons and condiments that make the sandwiches taste even better than you'd expect. Durkees Sauce? Who's used Durkees sauce since 1972?? They must have bought the super-secret recipe at the going out out of business sale! All winter long I'm there 3-4 times a week since virtually everything else in my price range closes for the season, and my personal Wellfleet Market boycott has been going strong for some time now. Name it, they put in in a "rollwich" here. Roast beef, hot chicken cutlet-strip things, smoked turkey, seafood salad, tuna, lobster salad (really good!) chicken salad, every kind f cheese, greens, sprouts - it's all there. Everything you'd expect on the side with a strong emphasis on avocado, lettuce, tomato. A little mayo where it goes on a sandwich which is nice - you generally need to ask for it if you want a LOT of it which means a BLT rollwich tastes like B and LT instead of mayo and bread. Had a catering tray last week at work of a dozen sandwiches - perfect presentation, fresh and appetizing. the price was right, too. For breakfast, they make another line of (again) surprisingly delish sandwiches - combinations of scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and a damn good cup of coffee that they adjust to your liking. The clam chowder is idiosyncratic - always good to the last drop, but sometimes it's the best chowder I've had EVER. Clams, potatoes, herbs, a light broth - yum - but sometimes it's all that plus corn - bacon - more herbs. Always get a cup at least but you'll come back for a bowl! And the counter staff in Wellfleet? Even when they're busy, you couldn't ask for nicer, more customer-focused folks. After taking a walk at the Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary, we had a desire for a hot bowl of clam chowder. Saw The Box Lunch on Yelp and decided to try it out. Sign out front says they have homemade chowder. Grabbed 2 bowls and went to Wellfleet Harbor to sit and eat. One of the best clam chowders we have had. Plenty of clams, little bit of corn, perfect lite broth. Loved it! read more

This place is fantastic! My family has been coming here for years (seriously, probably more than 10 years now) and we've never been disappointed. The unique rolls are great, I highly recommend the Calypso. For some reason, though, the Boring (all cheese) and Tuna Melt (just as it sounds) keep me coming back. They're inexplicably delicious! Only star lost is for the speed of service. On those days you are just ITCHING to get to the water, make sure you allot adequate time to get your food. Their lines get long and you can find yourself waiting for upwards of 20 minutes. This is on a busy day at peak hours, though, so just plan accordingly. read more
