Disappointing - we won't come back. The pesto chicken sandwich as okay - but the filling was so spotty and sparse, one bite would be a thin piece of chicken, and the other bite was just red pepper. I would normally expect the fillings to be on top of each other, and not side-by-side. The salad had 4 sticks of chicken, which was the toughest chicken we've ever eaten. The romaine was mostly the white stalk of the leaf. The blue cheese was so tasteless I thought it might be a bland feta. The hard-boiled egg was rubbery. The dressing was watery. I've only frequented this place for breakfast, most of the time. Even then, it is outstanding. There are so many fast food, and semi fast food places that do breakfast. I am big fan of breakfast sandwiches and coffee. It's easy, quick, and gets me what I need to start the day. For those who have had the Dunkin, McDonalds, Uncommon Grounds, and other establishments that serve the "Breakfast Sandwich" & coffee, this place beats them all. And not just because of their fresh bread options for the sandwiches, but because of the options on the sandwich, and the other places don't do two eggs standard. I've had their two egg breakfast sandwich with sausage, ham, varieties of cheese they offer, on various breads. It's all great, and the price is not bad. Oh dear. What happened here? The last time I reviewed Bountiful Bread the space was at least warm and inviting. They had a fireplace and even if the service was a bit sloppy, and the food was a bit overpriced for what it was, at least I didn't mind the physical space itself. Now there are several clashing styles that clutter the visual landscape, and any warmth the interior used to have has been replaced by colored LED lights, blonde hardwood, and metal chairs. The antique bulbs and vintage bric-a-brac displayed on the recessed shelves are totally out of place. There are some very good products for sale along the wall of the entry corridor, and I suppose if someone came here to buy groceries or foods to prepare at home, those would be useful. But I believe this is still supposed to be a soup and sandwich shop with some takeaway breads and pastry, so I found these presence of these products to be a bit perplexing. The promotion to win a pair of shoes was also a head scratcher. Equally confusing was why it took so long for our soup and sandwich to arrive. The soup sounded intriguing, "Thai chicken chili." Technically, chili is just a spicy stew of meat and red chilis, so one could imagine all kinds of clever ways one could make a Thai chicken chili. Maybe it was my fault for not asking. But it seemed to be just regular old chili made with chicken. Maybe there was a little delicate Thai flavor of lemongrass and galangal or somesuch on the chicken, but it was drowned out by plenty of good old fashioned American chili powder. That said, it wasn't bad. The flavor profiles just didn't play well together. The grilled sandwich was pushing the line past toasted and into the realm of burned. So, what I've learned is that Bountiful Bread has gone through a lot of changes. The food and the service which could have been improved are largely the same. The decor which is much different, was a change for the worse. As a result, I no longer feel that 2* is a harsh review for this local eatery. read more

I have been to this place many many times... almost any time l come to Stuyvesant Plaza to shop... since thanksgiving is over my DH and I decided to start our Christmas shopping and of coarse go to lunch.. we got there early around 11:30 as my DH is an early riser so 11:30 isn't very early. If you've never been here it is cafeteria style line up, order & pay at the register then wait for food to be made and then they call you. We ordered a chicken panini sandwich to share and each got a cup of soup. DH got chicken lentil in which he said was very good. I ordered tomato which was just as good as ever but not very hot which was disappointing . I have ordered this many times and it was never an issue... Also we were supposed to get pasta salad with our sandwich but it wasn't ready so they gave us chips instead... my DH went up after and asked for it :) they gave it to him! The place has been newly remodeled and looks very nice was sorry to see they took out the fireplace... was always nice sitting there with a cup of coffee by the fire. The staffpeople here are super friendly, but their baked goods are not the greatest. I bought a giant cinnamon bun, 3 large cookies, and a cupcake. The cinnamon bun and cupcake were stale and hard, and really should have been discarded a day or two earlier rather than sold. The cookies were fresher, yet none of the above really could be classified as anything but average, in both taste and appearance. We ordered breakfast; a 3 egg omelet with 3 toppings ( instead of mushrooms as one choice they mistakenly used olives but I didn't complain) my omelet came with 2 slices of my choice of bread . My dining mate got a fried egg with cheddar cheese on his breakfast sandwich of marbled rye. Both meals very good. The coffee was average for us, with a lot of flavor choices. I have never eaten in here before so this review is solely based on takeout. I get takeout from here every once in a while during the work week. I always go between the Spicy Tuna Panini and the Black and Blue Panini. The spicy tuna is on a pepper-jack bread that is the best part about the sandwich! It's delicious! The sandwich is always good and honestly, I know I see a lot of comments on the pricing but, the panini is huge (I'm just commenting on the tuna panini which is $9)! I think it's definitely a reasonable price and it comes with chips or pasta salad (or whatever other sides.) The black and Blue panini (not $9) is just as flavorful and fresh. The caramelized onions on this really make the sandwich. Two gripes...well one and a half: 1: WHY on earth would one put a pickle UNDER the pasta salad in the to-go box? (No, this isn't a dirty joke but it is an awful reality.) Now I don't even want to pick it up because it's been sitting under pasta and dressing and it's gross. Get your pickle game together! 1/2: I typically always have to wait for an order, even when I schedule it for pick-up because they are always swamped during lunch hours. They've updated the interior and it's helped the service issue quite a bit. While the signage is ghastly - there are actually two points where you can get service - once you figure out the 'express' line is like Panera's and the 'order' line is also like Panera's you can get in and out far more easily than before. The interior design is now sort of country-industrial, with edison bulbs and fake exposed beams and fake birchwood plank flooring. It's nice and the table arrangement is from the window to the back, so you can now burrow out of sight of the world if you'd like. The food is mostly unchanged near as I can tell and is somewhat hit or miss in the gourmet bread and panini category, but on its best days it is better than standard Panera. I still think Bruegger's down the "street" is more reliable but if you want moderately unique Bountiful serves the bill quite nicely. I'd probably bump this up to four stars if the bread were a better bargain and more reliably available. read more

The salad was humongous. The walnuts were whole and.big too and plentiful. One of those dishes would've been enough. Huge portions! Two for lunch was about $32 and change. You have a choice of pasta salad or chips. We both chose the first option. When our sandwiches arrived they were warm on the outside and cold on the inside just like Benjamin M. said. I couldn't detect any smoke or salty flavor in my ham. All I tasted was a lot of sweet. The combo of raisin bread, cranberry mayo and apple was too much to taste the Brie either. I tasted my son's sandwich and it tasted surprisingly similar to mine. The roast beef was cold and indistinguishable from the ham. The sweet flavor was stronger than any southwestern heat. The pasta salad was ok but not memorable. Ziti with small bits of broccoli, carrots and red pepper. It reminded me of a potluck dish. I had completely forgotten that food in U.S. was much huger than I had expected. I stoped by there with my friend for lunch at 11:30 am on Friday. They were very busy and had a line to order, and tables were almost full. However, we found a table for us soon because, I think, the customer turnover time is relatively short. Additionally, I ordered a soup, clam chowder, as well because it was very cold outside, and I was freezing. The sandwich was great. The blue cheese source made the brisket more savory and delicious. The soup made me happy. I was very hungry, but that was no match for the amount of food. The panini was so big, and the brisket is a lot, and they provided a cheese bread with the soup. I barely ate all of the sandwich, the salad, and the soup. Finally, I got a to go bag and took the cheese bread out, and I ate it at night at the Albany airport when a flight for my return trip was delayed!! I loved the bread with crispy cheese on it. They sold me this sorry busted up macaron for $2.00. NO PRIDE at all. How can you even sell that to someone. The photo that I posted was exactly how they sold it to me . . . BUSTED. Macarons should be chewy inside not wet and raw. My advice to you Bountiful Bread: Stick to the things you know. 86 the things on the menu that you can't get right. There is no need to try to do everything for everyone. Focus on the things you do well and streamline your product. And spank the chef who put those garbage macarons in the case. I had some mixed experiences here when I first moved to the area and I've been avoiding it ever since. But I recently was nearby and needed a quick, light lunch so I stopped in for a salad. I ordered the AJW Salad, which has chicken, goat cheese, artichoke hearts, avocado, dried fruit, and nuts over mixed greens with a balsamic dressing. The salad was a really nice portion size and had a good ratio of toppings to lettuce. I did think the dressing was weirdly thick for a supposed vinaigrette, but I applied it lightly and it was actually quite good. Also, the piece of bread served along with the salad was amazing. It had a cheese and garlic topping, and was wonderfully soft with a nice outer crust. The decor has been really redone since I was last here - super industrial and covered in stainless steel now. I'd say they should invest in pagers, but that would only increase prices. $7.75 for a bowl of soup and a bottle of water -- Really?? It's tasty soup, but not $7 worth of tasty. Sandwiches, wraps and salads are in the $8-$10 range, which I suppose isn't so bad, but maybe a tad steep for counter service. Quick tip: if you order soup, they *should* ask if you want a dinner roll or bread stick with it. Emphasis on *should* because they only ask about 25% of the time. If not, they give you the default dinner roll, which I would advise against. They are almost always stale. The bread sticks, however, are divine. read more

I hate waiting. Patience and "Zena" are two words that have only this one time in the history of the universe ever been seen in the same sentence. The line at BB is there every day at lunch - it's busy, but the service is quick and streamlined so it moves along nicely, especially if I'm at the back shoving. Order at the counters on your right when you first walk in - wait in the back or be seated until they call your name. It didn't take 10 minutes for my meal door to table, and to me, that's fast. You can also order ahead, online, and Pick-Up. I like that. Now, if I were only more organized....... It's popular, and there's a reason: the food is excellent. The salad vegetables are super fresh (you can build your own or try one of theirs) and all the dressings are homemade. The soups are always creative and delicious.The bread is outstanding - made in house - and you always get a nice fresh roll or bun with your soup or salad. It makes for great sandwiches - nicely conceived and made to order. Today I enjoyed their Caesar Salad ($7) with Chicken ($2) - a large salad of crispy Romaine cut just the right size, creamy dressing with mellow garlic, a few good croutons, and just an ounce or two of tender chicken. I slowed down and ate the whole thing. The muffins and cakes and cookies are amazing. The low-fat muffin of the day is always a treat. OK I'm a nerd, but I like them. For a busy place they work hard to keep it clean and all the staff are personable and happy to be helpful.
