The staff is so friendly and the bread is made by locals (UNC grads I believe) I'm shocked by how good the pastries are EVERY TIME! They always have at least 1 vegetarian option and it is ALWAYS delicious! In the past I've gotten the butternut squash croissant, green been & gruyere cheese, potato & feta - all mouth watering. I usually get a sweet treat too- you can't go wrong with the chocolate chess pie, moist bread pudding, flaky chocolate croissant, or fudgy brownie! Nothing new I can add here I guess, this place is amazing. They have a great selection of veggie and non veggie bread items. I loved the bagel-y one with onion, olive oil and poppy seeds. Whatever you get, you cannot go wrong because these people have mastered the art of bread and I can't even describe it. Also, you must try the morning bun. It's literally everything I look for in a pastry! Citrus-y, cinnamon-y, gooey, etc. I also tried their seasonal iced tea. It was a lavendar earl grey, which was very earthy and refreshing. Not the usual type of tea I am into, but certainly refreshing and different. This place is also located on the outskirts of downtown with its own (kind of janky*) parking lot so you don't have to worry about downtown crowds/parking to get here. This might be dangerous for me because I'll probably be coming here regularly. *Their parking lot is literally a pile of large gravel. If you try to enter the parking lot directly, you may scratch the bottom of your car, which I did. I bought a baguette from Boulted Bread, and it was by far the most enjoyable piece of bread I've ever eaten. I took it home and warmed it in the oven for 5 min. at 200 F and put some butter on it. The exterior had the perfect amount of crunch and the inside was soft and airy. The bread was so flavorful. You can tell that it was expertly made and is far superior to anything you could get from Fresh Market or Whole Foods. I also tried the scone and pull apart pastry. The scone was really good and most importantly, not dry in the middle. The exterior of the scone was had a nice baked crust and inside had a soft crumble that held together very well. I also really enjoyed the pull apart. It had almost a croissant like flakiness, but was pretty solid and pulled apart very nicely. The texture of it is amazing and the inner chocolate raspberry is so delicious. I would highly recommend trying Boulted Bread. The really are the pinnacle of bakeries in Raleigh with their amazing bread and pastries. read more

Boulted Bread was on "Review of the Day" couple of days ago and I saw many of good reviews of chocolate croissants. All of pictures looked so good and since Boulted Bread is pretty close from our house, we decided to go and check out their awesome croissants for breakfast. It was not that hard to find this place, but you def need to pay attention! It is very small bakery, but they have everything that you need. They have coffee, tea, and different kinds of pastries for you! As soon as I got in, of course I was looking for Chocolate Croissants(thank you, yelpers!), and they looked very good. They also had many different breads, pies, and desserts and all of them looked delicious. We got a chocolate croissant, another big pastry (I think it was called fall apart or something like that) that has chocolate/raspberry in it, one big dessert and one ice coffee. Like other yelpers' reviews, their chocolate croissant was amazing. It was so crispy outside but very soft, gooey inside. And it had some decent portion of chocolate inside. Since it was too crispy outside, I kept making loud noise and my hubby got so annoyed by me smacking so hard(oops). But I could not help eating like that! It was so crispy!!! I loved my croissant a lot and I honestly thought that it was tiny at first, but man I was so full when I finished my croissant with my ice coffee. Coffee was $3 and it was not that big, but it was worth it. Their coffee tasted very good and I loved the smell. My hubby liked his pastry, too. He said it was very nice and flaky. His big pastry had more chocolate&bigger than mine! We haven't tried out dessert yet, we are saving for tonight but I am sure that it will taste good! I'm slightly obsessed with Boulted Bread... Actually, completely head-over-heels infatuated might be a better way to describe it. For my money, their breakfast pastries are unmatched in all of Raleigh. Croissants with Escazu chocolate or prosciutto & gruyere, bialys with onion and poppy seed, savory bread pudding and jam filled pull-aparts all have me in simultaneous ecstasy and agony at the front counter, knowing that there can only be one. Their loaves of bread are just as enticing, and come out hot from the oven each morning and afternoon (pay attention to the chalkboard on the wall for the exact timing of your desired loaf). Seeded, Levain, Rye. I haven't met a Boulted Bread I didn't love. They've added an outdoor seating area on the side of the storefront, with very nice flowerbeds and herbs growing right beside of picnic tables. A much appreciated addition, since the inside has only a handful of small tables. You couldn't ask for better customer service either. The folks at Boulted seem just as excited to sell me some bread as I am about eating it (for the record, I'm way more excited about eating it). Love talking with them about the different specialty loafs and pastries they have on weekends. If you're a fan of gluten in Raleigh, NC, Boulted is hands down the place to be. read more

It is lucky for the sake of my wallet (but unlucky for me) that Boulted Bread is not located anywhere near my work, or else I would be venturing here every morning for breakfast. After my visit this weekend, I am confident when saying that this is one of the best bakeries in the area. During this visit, I tried the pull apart bread, which was filled with escazu chocolate and raspberry. They perfectly bake the pastry so that it is crunchy on the outside but incredibly soft on the inside. I would eat this for breakfast every day if I could. I was also able to try one of their delicious scones, which would pair great with coffee or tea. Lastly, we couldn't resist the temptation to order one of their French baguettes, which we later used at home to make some tasty sandwiches. My only regret from this visit was that we arrived closer to lunch time, so they were out of the morning buns that I see everyone raving about. So it might be a good idea to get out of bed just a little bit earlier so that you have a better chance at snagging this popular treat. The service was extremely good. The lady who served us at the counter seemed like one of the happiest people I've ever met and served us with the biggest smile. She is exactly the kind of person you would want to start off your morning interacting with. The only cons to Boulted Bread are their limited seating and parking. There are only a few tables inside and they wouldn't be able to accommodate a big party and then a few picnic tables outside. But don't let these logistic issues stop you from visiting! read more

My husband and I were introduced to Boulted by a friend living in Raleigh who knows my hubby (a pretty decent baker in his own right) is a man who appreciates a fine loaf of bread. This is a man for whom a trip to San Fran was incomplete unless we made a pilgrimage trip to the famed Tartine (which was, as a side note, all that we hoped it would be). But I disgress... Back to Boulted! We make a trip down I-40 from Greensboro to the coast a few times a year and stopping by Boulted has now just become part of the drive. That's one great thing about Boulted, it's less than five minutes from the interstate. But what really keeps us coming back is the high quality of the bread and baked goods. We usually get a loaf of the Levain bread (which indicates a loaf made from a sourdough starter) and a pastry each. The Morning Bun is really quite good, flaky and crisp with a bold and spicy cinnamon flavor throughout. This morning I tried the ham bialy and it was also delicious, made with local country ham and Swiss cheese nestled on top of a bed of carmelized onions dotted with poppy seeds. I also like their herbal tea and had the heart-pumping counter culture coffee this am. The coffee is a little strong for me, but that's just personal preference. I love a bakery like this - locally owned, bringing fresh energy and commerce into an economically challenged area all while offering a limited but consistently delicious menu. When you drive up, you are really shocked that its a place to eat and get good food. But don't be fooled. The extremely simple interior doesnt boast of the AMAZING DELICIOUS food that they produce. Oh my.....our ham and cheese croissants were buttery, soft and delicious. Literally melting in your mouth with every bite. The perfect combination of goodness. The baked bread is hearty and bursting with deep flavor. Oh and not to mention the herb and veggie garden beside the sitting area. Love love love this place. I went back to this place for a second time on Sunday. OMG! They have a yellow tomato with melted cheese on fresh bread item. I nearly lost my mind when I tasted it. The tomato was so fresh, just the right amount of melted piping hot cheese on a slice of delicious fresh bread. I swear there is nothing like this place. You must go!!! The morning bun, with the raw sugar was crazy good. I literally unwrapped every layer and ate it piece by piece. The Deets: When I would go get a haircut down at my barber on South St., I would see signs of life and a bit of bread and pastry action down at the end of the building...turns out this place opened up officially now as Boulted Bread. It's not a striking or telling store front (mainly a large garage door and smaller entrance door) but inside lies one of the newest bakeries around DTR. A simple wood-faced counter and glass display inside offers a nice variety of baked goods and pastries to choose from. My experiences have been around breakfast time. I've sampled such items as puff pastry (with Gruyère, bacon, and potato), chocolate croissant, and regular croissant. The first visit was ok except I think I got ones that had been in longer and had a very dark brown outer crust to them that gave them a bit heavy bitter taste. However my latest stop, I got some with a lighter appearance and more golden, I enjoyed this flavor a lot more. They were a hit with me that day and it was great to enjoy the freshness. Together with the Counter Culture coffee there, it was a good kick start to the day. They do have other offerings to drink, I did see a green tea with raspberry I believe as well. There are very small shelves to the side that have creamer, sweetener, etc. (including dry pasta for stir sticks), but just be aware there is no table or counter there to rest your cup on. There is a very small area of chairs/tables against the wall if you decide to enjoy your choices there. Boulted Bread is a local baker with quaint desserts and artisan breads. I came one rainy mid-afternoon and it was empty of customers, but the bakers were busy. You can hear the hustle and bustle from the counter where you see all of their hard work. I forgot the names of what I got exactly, but one was a pull-apart bread with raspberry and chocolate on the inside.. so good. Then I got a croissant with ham and cheese that I ate the next morning for breakfast and it was phenomenal. Just put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds and it was delicious. It's a very small store with about four tables for two on the inside and about four picnic tables for four on the outside. There's neat graffiti on the brick wall that will satisfy any hipsters Instagram desires. Parking is a bit awkward, there's a gravel parking on the side and plenty of parallel street parking. It's in an odd location, but it's well worth it! Only downside is that they do not have an espresso machine or plentiful coffee options for the avid coffee drinker. They do brew a pretty nice iced Counter Culture coffee and a delicious iced hibiscus green tea for moderate prices. read more
