The flavors were beautifully balanced, with nothing overpowering the other, allowing each ingredient to shine. To finish, we ordered the crème brûlée, and it was divine. It wasn't overly sweet--just smooth, creamy, and perfectly balanced. The service made the experience even more memorable. Our waiter, Red, was incredibly kind, professional, and welcoming. He was attentive without being intrusive, answered all of our questions, and made us feel genuinely cared for throughout the evening. I can't recommend Jolie enough. Every part of the experience--from the food and ambiance to the exceptional service--was outstanding. We would come back in a heartbeat. After dining here, it's easy to understand why Jolie has earned Michelin recognition. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they receive a Michelin star in the near future.

The reason for the low rating is the food. My colleagues could not believe that I ordered the liver entree, but I didn't care, I love liver, and my wife won't fix it. I'd never heard of Mustard-Seared Calves' Livers, but, loving liver the way I do, I was willing to try it. When the liver came out, it looked like a huge pile of greasy slop. I was not deterred and took a bite. The liver was mush; it had absolutely no texture, and the taste was just awful. Not wanting to tempt fate (I have had food poisoning before), I did not eat any more than that first bite. As I mentioned before, the waiter was excellent and removed the offending entree. He offered to put in an order for something else. I opted for the calamari appetizer, which was okay. They comped my calamari and didn't charge for the liver. I hope the restaurant will rethink this dish. I suppose it could have a following, but at the very least, make sure the liver is fresh and high-quality.

There was a party of 10 near us that seemed to get all of the attention of the kitchen. The restaurant was already out of one entree when we sat down at 7:30, then they ran out of the entree I had ordered, so I had to switch to the Steak Diane, which I really didn't want but the entree list was so minimal that I felt it was the only decent choice left. We were a party of 4; my husband and I got our starters at the same time, maybe about 15-20 minutes after we ordered. The other couple who was with us didn't get theirs until about 15 minutes later, with minor apologies. Once those were cleared, we waited over 30 minutes for our entrees, and when they finally showed up, my steak was severely undercooked. At that point, given how late it had become (past 9 pm), I didn't bother sending it back. I don't mind unhurried service, but this was beyond slow.

Recently, we have found ourselves trying not to enjoy just our go-to favorites that are mainstays on the ever-evolving menu. We have been blown away by the flavors of the large plate option called Chicken Pimientos. Don't let the name throw you, because it's not super spicy, it just has a nice kick to it with delicious potatoes accompanying the very moist and flavorful chicken. The way the kitchen team at Barcelona handles the preparation of the eggplant caponata is impressive and very unique. Other favorites on the tapas section of the menu recently are stuffed piquillos, corn zucchini bunuelos (think fair food turned healthy!), Wagyu carpaccio, lamb kofta, and pulpo gallego. Remember that their tapas offerings rotate in and out, oftentimes based on the season and availability of fresh products. The wine offerings are unparalleled in the city of Raleigh, and when you visit for dinner on a Monday evening, every bottle is half-priced. Can't beat that for a way to jump-start your work week! We tend to sit at the bar on most visits as bartenders Kira and Cameron truly handle their bar with a welcoming vibe and impressive ease. A cockroach scrambled across the floor near my table to the left of the coffee station. I wish I was joking, or seeing things but I wasn't the only person who saw it. One of the female employees went toward it and stepped on it but since it was headed toward my table, I moved. 4. It was really hot in there. Maybe not AC completely broken hot, but AC on the struggle bus hot. There was a large fan in the back dining room that wasn't doing much of anything except redistributing humidity. 5. I ordered an avocado toast with bacon and got delivered a grilled cheese sandwich. The server took it back but then I needed to ask for the bacon. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture because the same dish on Sunday was so elaborate and beautifully presented and the same order today was just meh. Not a good value for the price. I will say the server correcting someone else's mistake was clearly overwhelmed but doing her best. She was also the cockroach killer. I ate my lunch and read my book. My intention had been to linger a while and read but I decided to leave. The place was about 1/4 full when I left but all the tables still had crumbs, food debris and water on them made it too unpleasant to stick around. Very disappointing. We also had the sides Brussels sprouts and Japanese eggplant, which were average, and didn't have anything unique about them. The level of the food just didn't measure up to the cost for me. And to top it off, on one of the hottest days of the year, the air conditioning was clearly not up to the task. The dining room we sat in is completely surrounded by glass, so I'm sure AC is a challenge, but it was warm and uncomfortable. Summary: it wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth the price, and we likely won't return.
