Came here last weekend while visiting my friend! I've been eyeing this place for months and on this visit we were making plans! During covid, you need to preorder the day before at 6:00 pm! Things sell out so make sure you you get on sooner rather than later! (6:00 pm is when preorders open!) So when I got on the site, there was breads, pastries, and etc. So many choices! I had to try everything! Unfortunately, there was only 4 of us so we didn't order the whole menu but we wanted to! We quartered each item and judged it! Favorites will be listed below. Breads we got the levain, which is their sourdough, and a baguette! Both had crispy exteriors and soft interiors. Yum! The sourdough was sour but not overly acidic! We had the baguette with a homemade charcuterie board with assorted meats and cheese. It was the perfect vessel! Savory Pastries we got the ham and cheese croissant, everything croissant, their ham and cheese bialy and sesame bialy. The crowd favorite was definitely the everything croissant. Then the ham and cheese croissant. There was mixed feelings on the bialy, I actually liked it but others had a problem with the texture being too chewy and not having enough filling. It's a polish like bagel. Bagels are meant to be chewier. It's all preference! Sweet pastries we got the morning bun, pull apart bread, apple turnover, Apple money bread (forgot to photo), raspberry pinwheel croissant, and pain au chocolat. Crowd favorite was morning bun but the pull apart bread and pain au chocolat was close! We weren't the biggest fans for the Apple turnover but two of us don't like anise and I think there was a big presences of it in there. Once again, it's all about preference! I would advertise you to do something similar to this! Get a couple pastries and split them among yourselfs so you can get the best of all worlds! read more

Had the everything croissant which was the best fusion between a croissant and everything bagel stuffed with cream cheese. My friend had a cappuccino which was like a hug. SO GOOD. I have been visiting Boulted Bread for over two years, and I am a devoted customer. Over this period I've had the luxury of trying so many of their sweet treats and breads. I want to start by saying everything I've ever had here is delicious, but I do have favorites. Number 1 being their magnificent morning buns. They are delicately made with love, and more importantly, orange zest. By eating one you turn a good day into a great day. Other items I enjoy include: ham&cheese croissant, seeded levain, everything croissant, muscadine croissant and so much more. I also want to take a moment to applaud them for their COVID-19 safety measures. You must place an online order before picking up your item in front of the shop, and by doing this they've kept their business booming. This time last year, I remember waiting outside in line for their pastries because everyone loves Boulted Bread. Lastly, this is just a great place to visit. The people that work there are nice. However, when I walked in with my mother we noticed that all breads on display besides a very very few, were all burnt! Not just the bread, some of the pastries too (bread pudding for example). Baked goods shouldn't be burnt. If that is for an aesthetic , it's not worth the downside of the compromised flavor. The ciabatta bread had no taste as well. I was so excited to come here, but pretty disappointed and confused by all the pictures on here of very burnt bread with captions stating that it is amazing. Bread was not overcooked, it was burned! Tasted like burned toast! Buns were also burned and had way too much sugar, but still did not hide the burned taste. Wanted to share the flavors with our local vendors, but will throw it all into the trash can. Do not see how that could be an enjoyable flavor. Understand why the packaged it all up before giving it to us as we would not have payed for it if we had seen it! What a hidden gem! This bakery has been right by my house and I did not even realize it. The bakery has a simple menu and is quite popular every day. I stopped in on a Saturday morning and the lines were out the door. The dining area is very small so be sure to come early if you are planning to eat in. You will smell like bakery items and butter if you stay too long (trust me). The ham and cheese croissant is a must have! That is all you need to know. Ok, I don't know when or why burning pastries and bread became trendy. I myself won't turn my nose up for a well toasted piece of bread every once and a while but all of the baked goods I've gotten here have been burnt to a crisp. Even upon entering into the bakery your smacked in the face with the smell of char. I know that it's been scientifically proven leaving bread longer in the oven can bring of flavor but these are just burnt. It's unfortunate because many talented bakers work there but it seems like their skills and expertise are wasted on this style of baking. Amazing pastries at a great price; plus great service! The croissants are so so good. Legit. Flakey, buttery, crispy, chewy and all with 10,000 layers! We also had their sweet bread pudding which was huge and dense enough for four people to share after having the ham and cheese croissants! The staff member that was at the pickup window on Saturday morning (maybe the owner or manager?) was super friendly and was able to serve us as walk-ins. Well now I know what all the fuss is about...the highest quality baked goods imaginable! Having drooled over the many pics and 5-star reviews, we gave it a Saturday morning whirl and even lucked out with a two-top to land and share a bread pudding, ham and cheese croissant, followed by a chocolate-raspberry pull-apart. Coffee for Husband, cold Green Tea with Raspberry for me. Note: no sign of utensils, so this made for sharing a tad difficult. This can also lead to dangerous-for-the-marriage-moments when one person doesn't know when to stop pulling-apart and take full bites. I don't want the top crunchiness ripped off of my half, just sayin'! I want to bite through all the layers, get a little bit of the rich chocolate and just the right amount of raspberry, along with the texture of the flaky top. And when sharing the flakiest-ever ham and cheese croissant, each person should get a bite of an end where a little of the amazing salty cheese has oozed out a bit to get slightly browned. We both did agree that we would probably not order the bread pudding one again. The one we shared, while very rich with egg, lacked the other filling items that would have made it more unique. Plus texture-wise, we both preferred the other two. Just personal preference. What makes this bakery stand out from others is that they are a stone-mill using organic, heirloom and locally sourced grains. Add in knowledge, expertise, caring and compassion and we all get the finest, most perfect tastiest works-of-art ever! WHERE are they? South Saunders Street area near downtown, kind of between Memorial Auditorium and Boylan Heights. Street Parking. Would be nice if this helps the area around it renovate. So, Boulted Bread has only been open as a retail space for 2 days so take this review with a grain of salt! Profiled on Indy Week, the people behind Boulted Bread have been working on their space since the beginning of the year, did bread for wholesale distribution and have now finally gotten their retail space going! Which is nice since Yellow Dog Bakery is way over on the other side of Raleigh. What to expect? They've got a small store-front with roll-up garage door and a small display counter of breads and some pastries. I did a bialy with poppyseed and onion which was excellent along with a good cup of coffee. Cool that they use fettucine pasta as coffee stirrers, they can probably break those bad-boys in half and make them last even longer. Overall it's early and I'm excited to see where they take Boulted Bread from a business standpoint but they seem like good guys that are passionate about their product. Their inventory is a bit light right now so give them some time to pick up their operations. So kudos to them for getting their space open, now the wait continues for Lucette Grace and their pastries! read more

I came here on a whim looking for Northeast-style bialies. I had been let down at some other places. This establishment was excellent. First of all, the employees were so heartwarming and welcoming. I explained my goal for finding yummy bialies in the South. They brought me bialies and also some other pastries that were incredible. I'm a huge huge croissant fanatic and tried them from all over the world, including ones from Australia, Lune Croissanterie (known as worlds best croissant) and Dominque Ansels. But after the croissants from Boulted Bread, I would rate them the WORLD's BEST!!! How can I have any other croissant after this! The outer layers were crunchy and flaky with every bite, and the inside was soft with the perfect chewiness.
