This was a great spot for dinner and was recommended by a French friend who used to work in the city. It is part of a chain of Bouillons and this has a beautiful art deco glass ceiling and more importantly this location accepts reservations. It was a ten minute walk from our hotel so convenient spot. The snails were fantastic--so good we ended up ordering two orders of them. We also had the rabbit terrine (lovely and not gamey) along with the eggs with mayonnaise (nice to try and well seasoned but not my cup of tea). My daughter had a campari martini (yummy) while I enjoyed my Pimm's cocktail. For our main courses, the filet with fries was good with the fries delectable (the best of our trip, so much so that ordered another side of them) and the meat wasn't as tender as other spots but given the price point understood that. The Tolouse sausage with mashed potatoes was enjoyable, the duck was surprisingly good as well, the Hake was the only that was a bit too salty for me although loved the bulgur and tomato sauce. The desserts were so amazing-- the crème brûlée, rum baba, and chou puff... we each had our favorites and would be glutton and order all three. We love the decor of Julien Bouillon. It's vibrant and open with high ceilings, plus feels very French with art deco Parisienne decor. Decor aside, the food was ok, and you can't beat the prices! We started with the mayonnaise eggs, and we really enjoyed them. They were much, much better than their counterpart at Bouillon Chartier. Next time we'll order two servings they were that good. For our main course, we had the beef soup. It was good for a rainy night, but nothing special. We ordered the side of creole rice, but it was just basic no taste white rice. We frequently visit New Orleans, and there was nothing creole about that rice. I wanted to try the pork dish, but it was not available. We ordered a 50cl carafe of the Rhône Merlot, and it was good. I got here at the perfect time to beat the crowd. This place simply always has a line. I am enamored with the decor and the salmon was on a bed of pickled cabbage which I liked. I got a glass of champagne which I noticed was smaller than the neighbors glass for some reason. The server lady rushed me which I hear they don't do in Paris. You are supposed to sit and enjoy your meal. I wasn't even half way finished with my meal and she asked if I wanted the check. Seriously? I'm not even done eating? The place itself was big and well-decorated, though they had tables squished close together to fit as many people as possible. I was also blown away by the prices--it's so affordable especially coming from the States. The food was delicious, honestly one of my favorite places in Paris during my short trip there. The key to picking and enjoying a place to eat in Paris is understanding the difference between a bistro, a brasserie, a bouillon and a café. Each one has set hours, food, menus, neighborhood, preferences, and price points. Traditionally, a bouillon was meant for the workers of a neighborhood. A Place where food was served quickly, and very affordably. It is High volume and fast turnaround, basically the fast-food of its time. You will not see fine cuisine here but local, standard menus (often with a bouillon offered) where the food is served very quickly. This will help you enjoy dining in Paris because you will understand what each establishment is meant to provide for the diner. read more

The awestriking Art Nouveau interior pulled us into this restaurant, but it makes my very short list of Paris must-dos for the overall experience. I have no idea if anything has truly been updated since it opened in 1906, but kudos go out to a century of caretakers, because the decor is enough of a reason on its own to eat here. Reservations are encouraged - and we are Americans - so we booked for the early end of the dinner hour, which turned out to be a great blessing so that we could more easily walk around and enjoy up close the wall decorations. But even if you choose to eat at a more standard hour, it will be hard not to sit and just gawk at the ceilings and molding up above. I imagine that the menu has evolved a little more since 1906, but it's still classic French fare. Michael ordered the pumpkin soup and beef bouillon, and I had a lovely cauliflower gratin dish. I supplemented with rillettes, which were a treat, and which made our dessert of chocolate creme especially gratuitous. Service was friendly and efficient. And I still can't get over how affordable it is. Our only restraint here was the size of our stomachs, and despite their motto - "Ici, tout est beau, bon, pas cher" - I still had sticker shock. We were lucky to arrive at Bouillon Julien before the crowd formed on the sidewalk and got a table right away. The place is gorgeous to look at with impressive decorations and architecture. Being at Bouillon Julien I felt obligated to try the Bouillon Julien which is a beef broth with meat and veggies. It was rather tasty . The prices and drink selection was impressive as well, hard to believe a glass of wine would go for 3 Euro in a famous well located beautiful place like this. I'm honestly surprised by the low ratings because I had a great time and excellent food while here. First of all, the restaurant is beautiful. It's in the middle of a bustling street and there's often a long line outside - but once you walk in, it feels peaceful and relaxing to sit and experience the food. The waiters were all extremely nice and attentive - they were constantly checking up on me and had a dessert menu in front of me before I even needed to ask. The food was also excellent and incredibly affordable: it often shows up on lists for the best bang for your buck food options in Paris and the food quality is excellent. The portions are appropriately sized - and with it being so affordable, you get to dry various different types of dishes. The lychee blancmange desserts is one of the best desserts I've ever had - I still think about it and would be happy to go here again just for that. Just go. * * * There are a lot of tourist restaurants throughout Paris That are designed to serve unsuspecting foreigners overpriced mediocre industrialized French food. Strangely, as far as I know, none of them call themselves "Bouillon". The tourists they want to trap don't know what a Bouillon is - And that is a good thing. A Bouillon is a historic restaurant that was designed to serve good food to working class people. In those days, artists and paint were cheap ... So it was not expensive to decorate the room. French gourmet cuisine often involved inexpensive ingredients such as kidneys and sweetbreads. (There was plenty of regular meat, chicken and fish as well.) White sauces don't cost much. So it was possible to put out an absolutely grand classic French meal at a price any worker could afford. Since then, the historic bouillons have bifurcated. Some have evolved into quite expensive temples of traditional French cuisine. Some have maintained their original popular pricing. The paint jobs are a little more faded in the cheap places. The food in all of them continues to be remarkable. You can pretty much go to any of them in confidence. * * * Food savvy tourists know about the bouillons. That includes a lot of French tourists visiting Paris. A lot of Parisians eat there too. That means there are massive massive lines to get into these places. Samuel C's recommendation for people who want to eat in bouillons. RESERVE. Waiting in line is boring and stupid. Reservations are honored - so you can waltz right in and sit down at your table. Another option is to eat off hours. We have done very well showing up at places at 4 pm when no one in their right mind would be eating dinner. French food tastes just as good at 4 as it does at 8. * * * Bouillon Julien is one of the cheap and worn down but still marvelous bouillons. If dinner is your treat, you want to be seriously considering this as an option. Our table had many dishes and they were universally wonderful. I will briefly mention three dishes of note. a) They do a pea soup that is the most pea-y soups you have had in your life. Not split peas. Real peas like peas in pods. If you ever thought peas were tasteless and boring, This soup will show you the wonders of what peas can be. b) Calves head with gribiche sauce. Everyone goes nuts over pork belly. Calves head can totally give pork belly a run for its money. Both pork belly and calves head are about decadent amounts of super tasty fat - combined with totally super tasty meat. You can't go wrong either way. Sauce Gribiche is something you read about in the sauce chapter of your old school cookbook. No one ever makes it. Sauce Gribiche is simply, totally divine. It is a super creamy cream sauce - flavored with capers, mustard and fresh parsley. Cream sauce because French white sauce is just amazing. Capers, mustard and fresh parsley cut the fat on the calves head and gives it tartness and interest. The white sauce makes things rich; the capers makes things astringent; the calves head makes things good. I was happy happy happy happy happy. 3) This was a dish I did NOT order. But about half of the diners in the dining room were eating this. When half of the customers in a restaurant all order the same thing ... There is a reason for that. They don't all order that because the dish is no good. The dish with the vote of the people was Julien Bouillon. (Yes, the reverse order of the name of the restaurant.) It is a beef broth, flavored with lemon and beef marrow and served with homemade pasta. People don't usually order bowls of beef broth in the other restaurants I go to. This makes me strongly suspect that the Julien Bouillon must be something really special. * * * Would I go back to the Bouillon Julien the next time I go to Paris? Absolutely positively! But Paris does have several bouillons. You can find good lists of these on the internet. Eating down the Bouillon list could easily be worth it. And the biggest smash hit of my most recent trip to Paris was food from Reunion and Mauritius. This is French-African-Indian fusion food - and it is to die for. Busy spot for classic French dishes! We came at 6:30pm for dinner with a reservation. We were quickly seated and started with ordering escargot to share. Then for entrees we got the steak frites as well as the fish in cream sauce. Both were pretty good but I the steak (like many in places in Paris) was a bit tough and generally the steak is not a great cut compared to what you would get in the US. We loved the escargot (perfect to be eaten alone or on bread) and the choux was a great way to end the meal! This restaurant serves classic french food, so I got what they are most known for. Le Bouillon Julien is a beef broth flavored with coriander and lemongrass, fregola pasta, and beef macer. This soup was pretty light but reaaaallllly salty. It was great dipping the fresh bread in it though. That bread was sick. Like absolutely stupid. It was so good. It's so good that writing about it is making me sad honestly. I miss it. Ugh. -moving on- The julien dessert was so cute. It was a little muffin-like bread pudding-ish thing with rum, grapes, and chocolate sauce. It was the perfect little sweet ending to my meal. read more

I ordered the 6 course meal including 2 wines for like only 40 euros and in usd 40 bucks. You really get the bang for your bucks. . Salad - lettuce, cheese was amazing, and some tomatoes with light vinaigrette. The sauce is more on the tangy side for sure. It was refreshing and I needed my veggies. . Rabbit tare tare - this was different. It was authentic. It was an experience and a vibe. Not something I would order again. I like to think it was cooked. . Snails - can't go wrong with this anywhere in paris. You will love it. It was a little more on the bland side for the pesto. This is one of, if not the best bouillon in town. But unlike some others this place is committed to keeping prices low while keeping quality high. The staff here was great and spoke wonderful English. To begin we drank Aperol Spritz and I ordered a big beer. The drinks are very tasty. I finally had my opportunity to eat escargot, so I took it. Honestly, it was delicious! These little snails come in a delicious butter sauce with garlic. Definitely worth a try. For our main dishes we preferred a beer stroganoff on mashed potatoes. My wife loved it and the potatoes. I ordered the bouillon julien which is unlike me since it was soup. I don't regret it though. Great tasty beef pieces with wonderful lemongrass. We ended up getting a sausage with mashed potatoes for our baby. She loved it and we helped eat the rest. The table bread was tasty but nothing special. For dessert, we had the creme brûlée and the meringue with cream. Both were tasty but the crème brûlée was the best. The ambiance here is great. Bathrooms were clean. Service was great! Located in a bustling part of the city, full of restaurants and bars the experience is very enjoyable. Then you walk into Bouillon Julien, a classic French comfort food spot, authentic and affordable. An establishment catering both to locals and tourists. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the unreal decor. It is like walking into an 18th-century French castle's dining room, absolutely stunning and adds to the whole dining experience. Got here at around 9:30 pm, and had a quick 30-minute queue. It was unreal, as an American, seeing how cheap everything was. Such a low price for wine, appetizers, etc, it was unbelievable. Salad - I got two, and they were both delicious. Mushroom cream soup - One of my favorite dishes of the night, everything you could want from a soup, full of umami and creamy. Bouillon Julien - Their signature dish, a beef soup unlike anything you have ever tried. I would recommend trying it for the experience Then my favorite plate of the night, the raisin chocolate pudding. So unexpected and it was unreal, still to this day I dream of it Overall loved my experiences at the place, have heard of better Bouillions though, so I would look into that. I last are at Julien in 1972 (53 years ago when doing my summer backpacking tour of Europe). The decor, ambience and food were memorable--as I found again when visiting in October 2025. Very busy, noisy and atmospheric. The food is good and very inexpensive. A couple of dishes I could recommend.....the pumpkin soup and the sensational Brandade de filet de lieu noir fumé,, which is some sort melange of smoked fish. If you like smoked fish, this is the dish for you. My only direction away from something...the house wine in carafes is truly terrible. Still two dinners with starters, coffee, dessert and that wine for less than $50. Go! read more

We were referred to Bouillon Julien as a must go during our trip and we luckily had a free night to check it out. Julien is a historic bistro with a beautiful interior that gets fairly lively at peak hours. If you're looking for a quiet romantic night, this may not cut it. This place filled up around 8pm and most tables were there for dinner and a party it seemed. Tons of fun. I've attached pics of the menu. Everything was excellent amongst the 4 of us and the prices really blew me away. After two weeks of €20-€40+ plates it's hard to believe everything was this good for that low of a price! Bouillon Julien is a new "old" concept in Paris, harkening back to the days when there were hundreds of bouillons in Paris. Now there are a handful. Bouillons were places for the working class to get traditional French cuisine at working class price points. Definitely on-trend again, as most of the bouillons are packed with waiting lines out the doors. Five stars for the amazing Art Nouveau dining room with perhaps the most beautiful stained glass restaurant ceiling in Paris. It was painstakingly restored to its original splendor including the sea green walls. Four stars for the service which was friendly in spite of being overworked. Our waitress had to cover a lot of tables. Luckily for us the waiter station was next to us and we freely helped ourselves to bottles of water. 3.5 stars for the food. Maybe I was expecting too much. Portions are small, and not much stood out to me, but the food tasted decent. I had better escargot at another bouillon; however I liked the Gaspacho Andalou which was refreshing and I basically licked the bowl. The Les Plats Dorade fish was just ok, and the Le Julien Bouillon (boeuf bouillon) was nothing special and a bit bland to me. The one item that did stand out was the Choux Chantilly (cream puff with whipped cream) dessert. Probably the best profiterole I've ever had in my life. So light and deliciously fluffy. And huge! We took our friend Rick L out for his 50th birthday, and after several bottles of Crémant d'Alsace sparkling wine, followed by more bottles of wine, plus starters, main dishes and desserts, our bill for four people was less than what one-two people would get at a decent French restaurant in NYC. The service was excellent The classic French dishes were really good, not superb but just really good value. It's not high end, but fast authentic French diner food. Two apps. Our last dinner in Paris on our trip to see the new Notre Dame and my wife's birthday. The interior is a time capsule of the peak of the art nouveau movement. Absolutely gorgeous ! We had 6:30 (18;30) reservations and it was fairly empty. Within an hour it was almost full. The food was good, some entrees not what was expected. the Baked haddock and potatoes, (Brandade de Haddock) was not a piece of Haddock with potatoes but was ground up Haddock mixed in with mashed potatoes, but my wife loved it. The steak was ok, perfectly cooked but a little stringy. The appetizers were good, the Rillettes de Thon and Pâté de Campagne à l'Ancienne (with cornichons, which were so incredibly small I almost didn't see them. Now for the downside. The service, at least for us was very poor. Our waiter seemed to attend to the other diners at our expense. But that was a small price to pay for the overall experience and the very reasonable and affordable bill. Big pros for this place: The decor is absolutely gorgeous, theres chandeliers, painted ceilings, decorative columbs, a true French styled restaurant. The service is really great, even though our party of four arrived for lunch peak weekend time, we were seated within minutes. The place is very affordable with entrees ranging from 10-15 euros. Con: The food quite doesn't hit the mark. We ordered a range of dishes and all of them were very bland. Nothing to rave about. We ordered the rum bread pudding to share and it was incredibly cold and rigid ( unsure if that is how it is supposed to be) However, we shared a couple of glasses of wine and also ordered a bottle. Food = 4.25 but better than all tulle other bouillons that I ate at. I have never seen the French cut up endives to make a salad. Use to seeing it served in whole leaves. But this is probably a cost savings measure. For dessert the month blanc was very good. You just have to try this place at least once when in Paris. If you have a command of French be sure to use it when making a reservation, otherwise they will seat you in the front with all the tourists. If you don't have a command of the language have your hotel make the call. Noisy, busy, crowed and I wouldn't have it any other way. I started coming here when the neighborhood was much less desirable, that was to be honest part of the charm. The food is traditional brassiere.
