I used to love this place, but I went today and I'm very sorry to say that it has decreased so much. Menu was changed, food quality had decreased and some of its staples worsen. I asked if it had changed owners and indeed it has. Service was horrible, no attention at all and what's worse, they still charge you an automatic 15% tip! Why pay tip if services was so bad? Brigadeiro was terrible, portions were smaller and quality worse. It's very unfortunate because this was one of my favorite spots in Miami. read more

The chicken had some creamy component to it - if I had to guess I would say cream cheese. The beef was a little dry but nothing a little sauce can't fix. Both were delicious, chicken was my favorite. For the main course I went with the beef stroganoff. Came with white rice and a side of French fries. The beef stroganoff was phenomenal. Honestly, the atmosphere is amazing! Everyone is super kind and nice and well-versed in Spanish and Portuguese (for non-English speakers). One warning is COME WHEN THERE IS LIVE MUSIC. It is much more fun when the music is there than not. Food wise, everything is authentic and tastes right out of your mother's house in Rio. The steaks are all great and drinks are amazing too. So it is pronounced "BU-tek-O" just in case you wanted to sound like one of the dozens of Brazilian's flooding through this hip little bar on a random night... Don't expect a full bar - but PLENTY of variants of the famous Caipirinha! Super-friendly staff and appetizers and cheese-bread a plenty! I rolled in here at 7pm on a Sunday night, as someone had recommended a local Samba band would be performing.... At 7pm the place was EMPTY... At 745pm the place was PACKED. I am not sure how everyone showed up so quick, maybe they were all waiting to hear the music before they arrived? To my luck there was a set of professional dancers-in-training attending too. A dozen or so men and women dancing the Samba with the rhythm and elegance I think is in the blood of a proud people. The floor is a raised floating-wood floor, so excellent for 8 inch heels for the ladies to pound the night away, swirling around like tops. I was happy to see many, many families arrive too. Mothers, fathers, 8-year-old brother and sisters..... Blaring Samba music, dancers negotiating the floor like the 95 at peak traffic hours, wait-staff sliding in and out of the malay with steaming hot plates of meat and cheese-bread, and the grind of the blender making another Caipirinha! This was one of my favorite spots to get awesome Brazilian food that just felt and tasted like home. Unfortunately the past couple times that's changed. Today, we were greeted by a rude man who just looked annoyed we were there. They put us at a table against the wall in the patio where the bench alone the wall was low, narrow and insanely hard not to mention wobbled. And you're sharing this bench with everyone sitting on that side at the tables along the wall too so it's always moving. There was a fan on at the highest speed pointed directly down. Like; my hair was everywhere and we asked to change tables and were told no. Then asked if we could turn the fan off and were told no. Finally I just stood on the rickety bench and pointed it away. I get moving air around outside but with as high as it was right on top of me all the food would get cold right away. We ordered two sodas and never got them. This place I used to get a basket of Coxinhas for $7.95 and you'd get like 5-6 of them. Now you get two tiny ones for $4 and they come in fancy tiny white plates. The cheese breads too; from a basket to 5 tiny ones artfully arranged in a plate. That's not what 'boteco' food is about! I had to get up to get our waitresses attention and she kinda huffed and said oh you want something else? Like, yes, to order dinner? I didn't come to have two waters, (since she forgot the sodas) two tiny Coxinhas and a few bites of cold cheese breads. We had the stroganoff and the picanha na chapa. The stroganoff was good but very watery and the amount of rice given was laughable. Literally 3-4 decent spoonfuls with the stroganoff and that was it. There was more mushroom than beef. French fries are French fries can't really mess those up. The picanha is listed as 13oz but this dish wasn't that. Again teeny rice portion in a small ramekin with black beans and in a few bites that was done. I'm disappointed this is happening at this restaurant; it used to be my go to. But between the bad food and even worse service and the fact every server was nonchalant about customers and preferred to be gossiping by the bathrooms; I think it's times to find a new Brazilian hang out. read more

Had lunch at Boteco last Sunday and had a good experience nothing out of this world. My party and I sat outside and as many yelpers previously mentioned there are a lot of flies around which is a little unnerving. We also got bit numerous times by mosquitos which made our experience there less enjoyable. If you sit outside there are restrooms located both in and outdoors. The service was decent, not very attentive. The food was tasty we ordered numerous plates and shared them. Randomly showed up to Boteco on a Saturday afternoon to grab a drink while the car was being washed across the street and this place was pretty vibrant. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and cod fritters. The fritters were sooo good. We noticed in the outside area there was a bunch of people and a buffet with amazing looking food. I asked one of the waitress if there was a private event going on and she explained that on the weekends its all you can eat from 1pm-5pm. I believe she said it was $20, which is an awesome deal. To write about Boteco to me is almost like to write about my childhood neighborhood, because when I feel homesick I take a small trip to this little Brazilian jewel lost on 79th St., and it transport me back to my Rio, to my dear Brazil just by driving down south on 95. First thing you will notice is the big welcome smile the beautiful hostess welcomes you, then when you walk inside the restaurant the Brazilian music filing the air will take you to a different place than the surroundings of the Miami neighborhood. The decoration displayed on shelves all around the walls containing artifacts of all around Brazil like a collection of saints, clay and copper pots, cachaca (aguardente) bottles, St. George and the dragon, all a mixture of the Brazilian art, religion, and music in one small place will also help . The food just complements what your eyes see around you: simplicity with lots of flavor. Boteco is not a fancy place, to the contrary, is a simple bar/restaurant that offers samples of daily Brazilian dishes, of what Brazilians regularly eat when they go out. You have to try their empanadas (cheese, beef or shrimp), crunch on the outside and full of moist filing on the inside. Coxinha (my downfall!) is this funny shaped croquette filled with shredded well seasoned chicken breast is a little peace of paradise. You can either have it with a nice "chopp" (beer) or with a very strong caipirinha, offered in different flavors (strawberry, lime, etc..). The black bean soup is just delicious! This thick soup tasting of roasted garlic... Huuummm, my mouth is watering here and I went there yesterday! After the appetizers you should give sometime stand up try some samba steps and than try to move forward to the entrees. My favorite is the Picanha accompanied by fried yucca, vinaigrette sauce, and "farofa" (it looks weird, but it tastes so good!). Farofa is nothing more than yucca flour fried with butter and bacon! Don't forget to ask for a side of rice and beans if you really want to eat like Brazilians do! They also have "Bobo the camarao" (Shrimp bobo), this creamy shrimp made with yucca puree, olive oil, and spices accompanied with white rice... They have more, but you will definitely need to save some space for the desserts, that are as good as the first two courses. You can play safe trying the flan (made of condensed milk), or for the chocolate lovers you can try the "brigadeiro" (chocolate truffle also made with condensed milk), or maybe the passion fruit cream (if there still some left, since it's the first to end!). Everyday there is something different going on there, you have samba classes on one day, ladies night on another (Tuesday's), Bossa nova night, etc. We Brazilians love a party and we don't need much or many excuses to come up with a reason to be happy, to dance, and to eat well. Having just visited São Paulo, I returned to Miami with feijoada and caipirinhas on my mind. Feijoada: that stew filled with bean, beef, and pork and then topped over rice, assorted sausages, sautéed kale or collard greens, chicarrones, plaintains and farinheira. Caipirinhas: muddled sugary lime juice topped with cachaça (Brazilian rum made from fermented sugarcane juice). Then I remembered Boteco. I went for the first time on Brazil's independence day (conveniently enough) and found the place to be teaming with native Brazilians (hailing from all different regions of the country), proper futbol on the televisions, chopps being poured, caipirinhas being muddled and homemade feijoada simmering in giant clay pots in the outdoor patio. I felt like I'd temporarily returned to Brazil. Service was attentive but certainly not over-the-top and the feijoada was on par with native renditions. I could easily come back to sit at the bar and enjoy a range of caipirinhas (or caipiroskas and chopps) along with some bolinhos (croquetta-like bites of which they offer in many varieties). The picahna comes chopped on a hot grill and I say order medium rare because it will continue to cook in front of you. And if you're a well done person then just get the french fries. The picahna comes with fat on the tips and please don't be the type that picks them off. Just deal. There is also the fraldinha which is more of a steak cut but still on point. Not on a grill. Everything comes with fries. Die!!! They do nothing but make the dishes look like they came off the kids menu. They don't even have flavor. The yuca is cool too but meh. The one thing I missed out on was the feijao tropeiro which is beans with bacon, yuca flour, fried sausage, and eggs. How do you just run out of that? There shouldn't even be a traditional option for beans if that's on the menu. Not even for Muslims. Word. I had a few other things like the escondidinho and my recommendation is get the shrimp, not the beef. It's like a cheesy, creamy sheppards pie. Definitely get the frango app which is like carnitas but instead of pork it's fried chicken. And skip the bolinho de carne seca. Just not appealing. I'm pretty sure seca means dry and that's just what the dish was. Let me stop here cause it's sounding like I didn't like the place but in actuality I just know I could come here and not even look at the menu. Like I said picahna. I agree with Rob C. I had the Picanha, and for $16, I thought it was at least $4 too much. I paid for the same cut of meat for $12 at Hereford Grill (a white tablecloth restaurant) and it came with more things than this plate did. The farofa was tasty, but I also found it to be a bit salty - so I could not put on too much. The side of fried yuca did not come with anything - no dipping or sauce and it was left in the fryer a little too long - so a sauce would have been nice (I just mixed ketchup and mayo so I could eat it). Otherwise, I'd change the yuca for a salad instead. The ambience is really authentic though - very divey beach-side feel, and very Brazilian. The drinks are good and affordable - MWF's happy hour (5PM - 8PM) you get $3 caipirinhas and other variations of the caipirinhas - with vodka or sake instead of cachaca! Great drink prices and strong drinks make this worth coming to. Live music is always a plus in my book. They have many different activities throughout the week so this would make a great bar to return to. Brazilian jazz, anyone? Tuesday night is ladies' night and it manages to get a good crowd with plenty of caipirinhas flowing. A dj spins on the little stage they have indoors, and the indoor section of the restaurant turns into big dance floor by 11. Drinks are reasonably priced at $7 for most cocktails and most beers around $4, and they don't cheat you on the liquor. The highlight for me, though, is on Saturday - an all-you-can-eat feijoada buffet from 1 - 6 pm. They serve feijoada with sausage, with carne seca, and with ribs as well as the traditional sides - greens, oranges, pork rinds. Anyone who loves this Brazilian dish would definitely enjoy a Saturday afternoon at the buffet and listening to some Brazilian music being performed on the stage. read more
