A lot to say. First off the service was amazing. I was greeted with smiles upon entering and the team seemed to be very happy and it really made the dinner enjoyable. I started off with the FireCracker roll. Which was a warm Tuna roll with an amazing presentation and flavor. I started off with Their Green Gin drink which was a newer item on their menu. The contrast between the cucumber Gin and Mint herb phenomenal. You could taste every individual piece and it was refreshing. I went with the Shio Tamten Ramen and they did really well with the noodles. Perfect tension and break away as you pick up each bundle for a bite. The chicken was cooked really well. I was not able to finish the bowl because of the quantity and deliciousness. After I finished my meal. I topped off with the Old Fashion which was the perfect pallet cleanser into the desert. For Desert I went with their special. The French Toast Ice Cream. Again I cannot stress the quality of their presentations. They are extremely appropriate and eye catching. When I bit into the French toast I was expecting the bread to be room temperature over the cold ice cream. I was wrong. ***TASTE OF JAPAN IN THE DMV???*** Came in to a well lit Japanese ramen spot. The decor was more Japanese modern with a heavy western influence but you could feel the subtle Japanese influences. Does this pass as an authentic Japanese izakaya no but it is the closest I've gotten so far after leaving Japan . The drinks they had made to order were heavily influenced by Japanese culture and that became apparent when they served Sapporo on draft and in cans. They also had Sapporo black which I have not seee n since I was in Japan. The gyozas were an order of 6 for $9 and were good but they are friend not steamed. That did not stop the flavor from bustin through and being some of the best in the area. The takoyaki was just like the street vendors in Osaka with a subtle twist. These ones were cooked to perfection! Now for the star of the show! The Tonkotsu Ramen was almost as good as the local spot near my Japanese apartment. The flavor had a little missing but overall for a quick bite this is the best in the DMV. The chef did not speak English but the ramen was a large bowl that could have been shared with two people and neither would be hungry. It's not every day that you'll hear me say that anything is the 'best' anything. In this case, I'll have to do just that and say this: These guys serve the BEST ramen I've ever had, both in Australia and the U.S. I'm referring specifically to their shio ramen, with the glorious toppings consisting of chashu, bamboo shoots, shallots, egg, nori, fish cakes, and more. The chicken broth may not have the depth of a typical donkotsu broth, but it's a perfect blend of clean, lean, minimally fatty, savory broth that effortlessly envelops fresh ramen noodles. Private parking at rear of the shop is limited but street parking is all around and not terribly hard to secure, and honestly, I would gladly park a mile away and walk if I had to, if it meant that I would be able to reunite with my beloved shio ramen. A buddy and I were craving Ramen one night; but instead of sticking to the usual Bethesda area, we decided to check out the Arlington area. Personally, I was amazed to see so many Ramen spots in this area. The only downside is they have such limited hours, so you really have to choose a time outside of your normal workday to drive down and appreciate what the Arlington area has to offer. As we were driving towards the restaurant, we realized that it was getting close to closing time. My friend literally stopped at a light; I got out of the car, jumped over a road barrier, almost falling, but went to see if I could reserve a table. Even though we arrived there at 9:30, they were really accommodating to still serve my friend and I. The restaurant itself was clean and slick, really paying homage to the minimalist design style. You'll see different kinds of decorations adorned the walls, and my personal favorite aesthetic, the paper lanterns illuminating the room. We ordered the vegetarian Ramen. I thought it was flavorful, especially for a clear broth soup base. I've become so used to the creamy broth, that I wanted to try something a little more lighter. The noodles were fresh, so were with the vegetables. I always have to have a marinated egg with mine. It really adds a level of umami to it. Mind you this was before eggs became outrageously expensive. Even though I wasn't able to finish the whole thing, I still had enough to take for lunch, and it still tasted awesome. I would definitely want to come back and try their vegetarian roll menu. For a long time, Boru has even one of my wife's and my favorite restaurants. However, when we went there for dinner again the other day, after being away for a month, we found some changes: Although the staff is still the same friendly, efficient one that has always welcomed us, what used to be authentic Japanese decor, with Noh masks on the walls, has been turned into walls displaying trendy, boring pictures of American "culture." Its Japanese flavor is gone. Also, where they used to serve delicious green "ocha" from teapots, they now served--you guessed it--teabags. Plus, although I enjoyed my karedon with curry sauce, when we got home, my wife became ill and threw up the seaweed used in her Poke Bowl. I don't know what initiated such sudden changes in both decor and food quality, but I suspect it's new management that wouldn't know a Japanese restaurant if they were in the middle of Tokyo. I have always cut my eyes at people that are like, I'm from New York, so I know good pizza, like okay we get it! The hubby and I checked out this spot on 6/19/2023. The restaurant had just opened about 30 minutes prior to our arrival, so there were only two other tables with customers. We were sat immediately and after looking at the menu for a brief period we both decided to order the Hakata Tonkotsu. The hubby added Bok Choy to his and I got mine without the seaweed and roasted sesame. The ramen was very good, the broth was rich with pork flavor, it was silky and buttery. The egg was cooked perfectly soft and had tons of flavor, there was also a solid amount of char siu. Everything blended together nicely and the dish was really filling. I like being able to control the spice level. We also got some basic shrimp tempura, pork gyoza, as well as a shrimp tempura roll (they were able to accommodate my request of taking out the avocado and including extra sauce for a small cost). Only weird thing I noticed about asking for extra sauce is that their spicy mayo comes with roe in it, so if you're avoiding raw fish you're out of luck. I think this is one of the best local ramen places in the area. You can't go wrong with the TanTan and I've tried a few of the others including the miso. The prices have stayed pretty level since covid which most ramen places including Jinya cannot say. This time around we got their takoyaki to share. While good, was a little surprised there were only 4. Typically most restaurants give 6. We each got a bowl of the Shio and the House spicy miso ramen, with some additions thrown in. Overall the broth is very good and the portion size is pretty large. The flavor of both broths were good and the noodle texture decent. The pork was fine, nothing amazing but decent for ramen. We ordered the Karedon as the appetizer and ramen to our liking. The Karedon was really good but there were many parts of it throughout that were freezing cold so I'm not sure of the heating process there. Our ramen was good! WARNING: Their chili oil is the real deal and NOT to be messed with. Our waitress said "oh, you like spicy huh" and boyyyy she did not tell me that was a different level of spice. I physically could not drink the broth or they would've been calling 911 for ya girl. I know better next time to just add a pinch. My two friends and I came here at around 7:30 PM on a Wednesday and we were seated immediately as it wasn't very busy. This was good because my friends and I were hungry and we've been waiting all day to eat ramen! We've heard great things about this restaurant so we were very excited to try the ramen here. Our server was ready to take our order at a timely manner which we all appreciated. I got the "Hakata" Tonkotsu Ramen since I love a hearty pork bone broth and pork chashu. Our order came out in 5-7 minutes, which was awesome. The presentation was beautiful. The pork chashu looked extremely tasty, flavorful, and tender. I almost forgot to take a picture because I just wanted to dive in and inhale the food. I loved the green onion curls, too! The broth was my first taste. I loved how thick and creamy it was, and it was also not too salty! I eagerly mixed all my ingredients together so that way my first actual bite had a bit of everything - a satisfactory bite of egg ramen noodles, small piece of the pork chashu, a bit of the ramen egg, one bamboo shoot, and a few pieces of the green onions. Wow. The first bite was amazing. The noodles were soft and soaked up the savoriness of the pork broth, and I got the crunch and sweetness of the bamboo shoot. The pork chashu was definitely the star of this dish, as it was very tasty, fatty, and extremely tender. The fat of the pork melted in my mouth and the meat was extremely flavorful. The ramen egg was a classic - nothing overly special, if anything, it was a bit overcooked since the egg yolk was more solid than runny. The green onions provided an extra crunch to the bamboo shoot that gave a last final kick of flavor. Within 8 minutes, my bowl of ramen was gone with only a bit of soup left. I didn't feel bad drinking all the soup since it wasn't overly salty and extremely savory. I couldn't stop drinking the broth because it was so delicious. Our table didn't do much talking while we were eating because we were too busy wolfing down the delicious ramen. This was a decent place for ramen, however, I don't think it was overly special. It fulfilled and satisfied my ramen cravings, but definitely not the best ramen I've ever had. There was not much customization except paying $1-$2 for extra ingredients (wood ear mushrooms, more noodles, extra broth, etc.), and it was already $13 for a bowl of ramen so I didn't want to pay for more. Overall, this was definitely a solid location for ramen. My friends and I were full after our meal and we will definitely be back if we are craving ramen again.
