Both locations lean into the historic brick building aesthetic, and the Riverside location glows with natural light and cozy charm This location is smaller because it used to be a rail stop! It's totally transformed into what may be the cutest coffee shop in RI. The service and coffee making was top notch. I got a dreamy iced coffee, stayed to enjoy the space for a bit, and then hit up the East Bay Bike Path that this coffee shop is located along. It is the perfect weekend activity -- go! Excellent coffee, delicious, strong cold brew and mint matcha latte (I think its a latte?) and great small bites. Particularly recommend their cheddar biscuit -- I get one every time I go with the wife and kid. Plenty of indoor seating which is great and even more outdoor seating. Love that its right on the bike path and an open space. I also appreciate that they have a filtered water station for customers; great for coming off the bike path and with a toddler. We're new to the area but have already come here several times for breakfast/coffee breaks. One of my favorites. The Bristol location is great too, just out of the way from where we are. read more

Stopped here on a rainy day after a yoga class at The Love Offensive and LOVED it. I tried all of the gluten free treats and was delighted, purchased two bags of their coffee beans which were divine, and really appreciated the friendly service and chill atmosphere. My favorite spot, especially in the Fall, when you can sit outdoors right alongside the bike path. Their coffee is consistently delicious, with some seasonal drinks on rotation. This fall, it was a Harvest Latte with maple syrup and a few spices that make for a perfect companion to sitting in their outdoor area with a book. A unique location and unique blend, no pun intended, of cool and funk. I have driven by here many times but never took the time to stop in for coffee. I am gland I did today. A clean modern interior and cool train station converted into a retail coffee shop by the East Bay Bike path is very inviting, just even from looking outside. Such a unique space, compared to bland generic commercialized coffee shop experience you find elsewhere. I did not know that they roast their own coffee in small batches. So awesome. Unlike other coffee shops who outsource the roasting, they do it from the green coffee beans. That takes some skills and knowledge. I am not sure where they get their baked goods, but I liked their ginger lemon scone to go with my dark roast coffee of the day. I will be sure to return to this place when I am near by. read more

Plain brewed coffee was acceptable and not weak, but I didn't love it. Maybe their espresso drinks are better. "Breakfast Sando" took forever to prepare and was TERRIBLE. Dense and heavy with weird textures to both biscuit and egg/cheese patty. Chicken sausage was not great. I ate less than half the sandwich and half an hour later my stomach was turning. I wish I could like this place but I don't think I will be returning to try anything else. read more

Just another review! Ok. It's hard for me to contain myself here because Borealis became my favorite when I first discovered while on the bike bath a year ago. I got to meet the owner at that time, who explained to me why it's named Borealis and here in the Ocean State (he's from Alaska where coffee is a passion) and met his wife (who's from RI). They source their own beans, very carefully, and I got to virtually your the process on an online Yelp event (yeay, Elite status!). They are so passionate about coffee, so you know it's done right. And if you have a question, they will be happy to help. What I love about this place: the coffee is always always always simply fantastic. The food is great. And it's such a great location. Part of me wants to write a long-winded review of this place, but think I'll demure. Instead I'll just say that Borealis has gone into our weekly rotation and is some of the best coffee around. Consistency from visit to visit is great, and everyone who works there is awesome and kind. They also have a little kitchen and make some tasty toasts (including one with homemade hummus and Moroccan carrots, which is amazing) and improbably delicious biscuits that they serve with house preserves. Highly recommended despite being a little off the beaten path--which is actually nice. read more

Their iced variants are great contrasts depending on your mood (the flight is always a great choice if you're hanging out) and the seasonal varieties always keep things new and fun. They recently introduced their own food products and it has been kind of a hit or miss in terms of in-stock, and speed to feed. But it's DELICIOUS. Love all that you do, but I really was hoping you'd bring back the PVDonut assortment on the weekends. It was a nice switch-up and allowed me to avoid going into downtown. The bag says "an emphasis on building farmer relationships and traceability". However, the company says nothing about what farmers the coffee comes from, and offers no actual traceability. If the claim were true, it would be a no-brainer to put the information on the product. That's exactly what people like me look for. So, unfortunately I have to presume that this company is simply clothing itself in social virtue, and is almost definitely buying coffee through wholesale distributors. Building relationships with farmers is VERY time consuming and travel intensive. Also, the coffee I'm drinking now (simply called "Sumatra") is labeled as their 'darkest roast'. It is barely a medium roast. Sigh. Anyway, the coffee isn't bad. Just, either show your work or drop the pretense at economic justice. read more

First off, let me start this review by saying that I don't live any where near this coffee shop. I actually live in Honolulu, but I have family that lives about 30 minutes from here. I stopped in for my first time a few months ago when I was visiting family. I've been dreaming about returning since. Luckily, I was back in town for another wedding and guess where my first stop was after the plane landed? Yup. Right here. The place is a great little shop that has a small lot to park in (and street parking, too), offers a variety of freshly roasted beans to buy, it's got a nice seating area inside and outside, and even offers some board games and things to do while enjoying a coffee. Here's the best part for me: they offer a flight of cold coffees on their menu that includes a cold brew (steeped for at least 16 hours), iced coffee (hot coffee flashed over ice), and a nitro cold brew. On top of that, each method is prepared with a different variety of coffee. As a coffee dilettante, I was geeking out. I love tasting different coffees and this is a fun way to do it. Great spot right on the bike path. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating with an open-air feel. Menu is not overwhelmingly large (a good thing) and prices are reasonable. Lots of yummy-looking baked treats available to accompany your caffeine as well as breakfast options. I always love a place where I can sit outdoors with my pup. A downside for me is that they don't leave their half & half out--just whole milk. I don't know about anyone else, but I opt for creamer so it's a bit of an inconvenience to have to ask for them to take it out especially during peak times. Not enough to keep me away though! Popped in while nearby and got a great nitro and my wife got what she called a phenomenal tea.

It's taken several years but I think I've finally decided that Borealis is my favorite cafe/coffee shop in Rhode Island. Starting with the coffee, obviously. I've had a wide variety of their caffeinated beverages (drip coffee, pourover, cold brew, multiple espresso-based drinks) and they've all been great. The beans are sourced from a number of different countries and always freshly roasted in small batches. I now pretty much exclusively buy their more limited-run beans, which are $17-19 per 12oz bag. **For some very useful context, I make pourover at home and this equates to ~$0.70-1.20 per cup, depending on how big I decide to make my coffees** Anyway, can't say enough about the quality of their beans and the drinks they make from them! The shop itself is located directly on the East Bay Bike Path, so it's a nice place for a quick break on a run, bike ride, etc. The inside is clean and generally pretty quiet. When I was still in school, I used to go there every once in a while to study and could do so peacefully. I don't think they make their own food but they have local pastries that are pretty decent. Staff is always friendly and attentive. The coffee is the best around! Highly recommend if you're a coffee snob like me, or if you're just looking for a cozy spot to enjoy a nice cup of coffee/tea/etc. read more

Stopped in today for a chance to try the coffee and view the space - and to try a bagel from the new baker in town Rebelle Artisan Bagels that pops up in a few local businesses each weekend. I love this space! It's an airy and clean renovation of an old train depot. Lots of windows, cozy wood tables, free wifi and art lined walls? Yes please! After much time spent in coffee houses in LA and the Pacific Northwest, these are my basic requirements (except for the art, duh). I could spend some time here - especially when it's warm enough for the doors to the sweet patio to open. The brewed hot coffee (beans roasted in-house) was strong and quite good. My cold brew may have been a teeny bit old (but it is still winter and not as many folks want cold coffee in the cold). So, with a great experience why only 4 stars? The milk and cream situation. Don't really like that I'm pouring directly from the cartons. I'd rather have a more standard set of carafes on the counter with the napkins versus grabbing them from the serving counter 20 steps extra away from my table. The flow is walk in, order, walk back toward the door for creamers, go back past the register to sit: awkward arrangement. Picky I know, but that's me. My bagel was good, verrry good. So many poppy seeds that I'll be finding them in my teeth for days! This was a bit pricey for just a bagel though, so for now I'm still sticking with Bagel Gourmet. My guy on the other hand had the house-cured lox. Based on that I know we're going to continue following the pop-ups! read more

It's a fine Friday afternoon as I sit here on the Amtrak train from the hustle and bustle of NYC to Providence. Despite the strong desire to take a nap, I'm comforted by the fact that I'll soon be sipping on a cup of liquid gold on Saturday (and maybe Sunday too). Borealis elevates the coffee game, and it's a must stop on my bi-monthly weekend trips to the area. It's well worth the drive as it's a little south of downtown. Staff is beyond friendly and makes great recommendations on beans to purchase based on the type of coffee I'm feeling. Their scones hit the spot as well. Perfectly delicious sandwich! We ordered the sweet potato and pesto sandwich on sourdough. They do offer gluten free bread but didn't have any the day we visited. The orange hibiscus iced tea was yummy and refreshing. My mom tried the earl gray iced tea. This is my first time at Borealis. I have to say that they did not disappoint- there is a strong hipster vibe- but don't let that scare you off. It just means it's not corporate and the have good coffees and a pretty good selection of baked goods - I recommend the carrot cake muffin and nitro matcha-they heat the baked goods too. WiFi is available and water is complimentary. They are environmentally conscious :) no plastic straws here It's got a good quiet atmosphere, good for relaxing. The service time is quick and efficient. They have game nook that encourages people to stay and enjoy :) parking is available- though it is limited Plenty of street parking too. Just discovered this place, but I wish I had found it earlier. Can't talk about other coffee or drinks/foods, but the Chemex pour over was a 5/5. It is a great place for work, but there is limited seating inside - so could possibly be issue in the winter - but there is much more outdoor seating for when the weather warms up. They have freshly roasted coffee beans (blends to single origins), along with an array of merchandise (mugs, beanies, thermal, etc,) for sale. In short, if your looking for a new micro-roaster to try high, definitely stop bye and try their pour over. read more
