Octopus
Victoria B.

Dropped by for tapas and had the option to sit at the bar or in the restaurant area at the back- sat in the back because it was warmer. It was busy with a group at a long table and gradually filled up. Ambience is nice and the food came quite quickly. We ordered a few tapas to share including the lamb chops, the suckling pig, the octopus and goats cheese salad. The octopus with paprika on a bed of potatoes was incredible!! Sadly we didn't notice the specials board behind us, so if you go make sure you check it out! Surprised the waitress didn't tell us about the specials. 4 is about enough for 2 people and then we had manchego cheese for dessert. Everything was tasty, would come here again.

It was so good I literally came here three times in one week. Hopefully. It probably doesn't help that I pass by this beaut of a place twice daily. I first went here for a friends birthday and was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, atmosphere and price. I had always thought I would hate tapas. HOWEVER I loved this. It was gorgeous. When we first walked in we thought "oh shit, how are we going to hear each other". We hadn't realised that this place was also a bar. Luckily the bar area is separate to the restaurant. It's a nice atmosphere and when in the restaurant you can't hear the bar at all. The actually venue is amazing. Dripping with atmosphere and history- it is after all in the crypt of a church, and it doesn't disappoint. We had extremely helpful staff who were able to advise us on how to order and how many plates would fill us up. We ordered after trying to decide between many brilliant sounding dishes. The dishes came out from the open kitchen when they were ready. This means you knew you were getting super fresh stuff and didn't have to wait for anything else to be ready. This meant all dishes were cooked pretty perfectly. A few which I would recommend to everyone: The chickpea salad- before this dish I was insistent I hated chickpeas. The roast lamb with potato foam stuff- this is amazingly tender and AMAZINGLY tasty Duck egg chorizo and potato thing. This tasted beautiful. One dish I was under impressed with was the pudding- churros. I had them before in Spain and not surprisingly I preferred those. I'd rather fill up entirely on tapas rather than save myself for pudding. Over all it was brilliant. The only things I would say is.. A. Book a table or you won't get to eat there B. The guy who I presume is the general manager likes to air it about it, don't let yourself get annoyed with him and let it ruin your evening. The service is great and waiters and brilliant and wonderfully friendly.

You might be confused as to whether it's Spanish or Italian. it's a bit of both, but don't let that…read moreput you off. It could be charm, though you might call it smarm. The staff are incredibly friendly and the food is - for the most part - right up there. It's simple fare, very well done. There are some stinkers on the menu - but these are down to the style of the restaurant and not the execution. Just be mindful that this is real 70s/80s style food so if you get, say, the crab claws it's going to be a crab claw wrapped in breaded crab and deep fried. On the up side, there are some classics like a half avocado with prawn cocktail that will have you yearning for your childhood. The house wine is really quite decent and exploring the rest of the list isn't so bad either, though I usually stick to the house. Reservations are generally not required - we've never had them and, while it's busy, we've never waited very long. And the staff are filled with old-world charm. (n.b. - the owners aren't Turkish, they're Cypriot, and they love food)

Ran by a Spanish family who do everything to make your stay (whether it be for a quick beer or a full dinner) comfortable and to make you feel welcome. Drinks are fairly priced, with a very good wine / champagne menu for the area. Beers are cold and they have a good selection. Recommended food includes the garlic chicken - polo sopresa which comes served with fresh vegetables and potatoes. Veal, pasta, salads and fish also feature highly. Dinner for two, with wine and desert will easily come in under £50.

The Donostia Social Club, hidden in the POP Brixton Container complex, is a lovely homely little venue that serves great tapas (although definitely not at the prices you'll get in Spain), that is pretty authentic - even down to the little squat bread sticks you get with everything in Spain. It's a very intimate restaurant, although there is limited outdoor seating if you're claustrophobic, but I love what they've done with the place. The white tile wall reminds me of restaurants I've visited in Spain, although the tiles are much bigger, so it's an interesting English take on this. The Patatas Bravas are particularly lovely and come with salt flakes, chilli and tomato sauce. The meat platter is nice, (It was okay for the UK, but nothing like the standard you'd get in Spain) but the bread is a little too thick cut, it really needs to be thinner, it's hard to take a bite, so I'd suggest if you order this you ask for them to thinly cut this. Absolutely yummy!

This tapas place has a little upstairs outdoor seating (lovely for a summers day however when I was there it was waaaaay too cold) which provides a great view of the rest of Pop Brixton down below as well as inside where there is long wooden bar with stools where you are seated and served from behind the bar. The place has a cool vibe and an amazing looking menu! I only tried a taster given our during an event - a huge creamy wedge of goats cheese, a little leaf with a strawberry and balsamic glaze on top - which was really really good and will mean I definitely return for a proper meal. The menu ranges from £3.50 (for a scallop) to £7.50 (lamb rump) and everything sounds incredible. What a great find!
