The last time I was here was around 2019, during their early days, and while it was good then, my visit on December 13, 2025 felt like a full glow-up. The ambiance is now cozy but lively, the kind of place that hums with energy without feeling chaotic. Warm lighting, upbeat vibes, and a crowd that looks like they *know* they picked the right spot for the night. SERVICE: deserves a serious shoutout. Our server, Albina, was professional, warm, and genuinely attentive, the kind of service that elevates the entire experience without ever being intrusive. Drinks stayed filled, timing between courses was smooth, and the rest of the staff moved like a well-coordinated team. You could tell they take pride in what they're doing. FOOD: Now let's talk food, because this is where Bootleg Special really flexes. We kicked things off with the Beef Birria Bao and Truffle Steak Tataki and wow. The Asian-Louisiana fusion is bold and surprisingly seamless. The bao was soft and pillowy, packed with deeply flavorful meat and veggies that worked beautifully together. The truffle steak tataki? So tender and delicious that I realized halfway through I was eating it too fast to fully analyze it -- always a good sign. For mains, the Squid Ink Fried Rice and Vodka Cajun Chicken absolutely delivered. If fried rice is on the menu, THIS is how it should be done: creamy, rich, deeply flavorful, with scallops cooked to perfection. The vodka Cajun chicken was equally impressive -- thin, crispy breading with juicy chicken underneath and a sauce that hits that perfect creamy-spicy balance. And then... BEIGNETS Soft, pillowy, and basically melting in your mouth. A flawless way to end the meal. One thing I loved seeing was both owners walking the floor, blending right in with their staff. If you didn't know they were the owners, you'd never guess -- which says a lot about the culture here. Steve was attentive, kind, and clearly invested in both the guests and his team. I was recommend this restaurant from our uber driver. Visiting from LA on a business trip (3/29/26) . The atmosphere and service were great, our waiter was very friendly and helpful with picking out the best food on the menu. The only problem I experienced, was with the host. my experience here was extremely disappointing and uncomfortable. When we were first seated by the host, I quickly began to notice something that felt very strange and unsettling. It appeared that Black guests were being seated in one area while white guests were seated in another. I don't normally jump to conclusions or bring race into situations lightly, but it was very noticeable and honestly uncomfortable to witness in real time. It made the atmosphere feel awkward and unwelcoming from the start. Not long after we were seated, two men arrived to join two women at the table right next to us. Their behavior was extremely obnoxious. They came in loudly singing at the top of their lungs, yelling "we came to embarrass you," while recording themselves and shouting for several minutes. It was aggressive, disruptive, and honestly very uncomfortable to sit next to. I didn't want to end up in someone's video or be around that energy while trying to enjoy a meal, so I asked to be moved immediately. At that point we had only received our waters. The service throughout the night was very slow, which was surprising considering the restaurant didn't seem particularly busy for a Friday night. The food was actually decent, which is probably the only thing that kept this from being a completely terrible experience. The drinks, however, were another issue. I ordered a lychee martini and also had a green tea shot. The waitress ended up telling the manager that both my friend and I felt like the drinks had little to no alcohol in them, and they brought over a complimentary cheap tequila shot. Even after all of that, I still genuinely felt nothing. I'm a lightweight when it comes to drinking, so that was very surprising, especially considering the price of the drinks. Then the icing on the cake happened -- there was a fly in my water. I had already taken a few sips before noticing it and have no idea how long it had been sitting in there. That alone was enough to ruin the rest of the experience. What made things worse was the lack of response from management. The manager never came over to acknowledge the situation or speak with us. At one point he was standing nearby, drinking directly from a wine bottle and looking over toward our table, but still chose not to come over or address anything. No effort was made to fix the situation or ensure that our experience -- or our money -- was respected. Overall, the food was decent, but everything else about the experience was extremely disappointing: the uncomfortable seating situation, the disruptive table next to us, slow service, weak drinks, and the fly in my water. Got a reservation with a friend for 11AM on a Saturday. It just opens at that time, so our food was served pretty quickly! Our favorite was the bootleg benedict. The hollandaise sauce had great flavor of umami, and the bits of crab were tender! The poached eggs were cooked well. The salad just had a bit too much of vinegar/acidity to its sauce though. The soufflé pancake was pretty good in terms of flavor. Not too sweet and we liked the creamy sauce especially with its hint of strawberry. The texture wasn't what I expected though. Restaurant Week Dine Out Boston Those I've heard of, but 2025 was my first time participating in Asian Restaurant Week, and Bootleg Special was offering a 3 course menu. I enjoyed the Bok Choy Caesar Salad, although it is admittedly crunchier than the normal romaine lettuce leaves. As a spice wimp, I didn't enjoy the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, but they had me at the crab, so I asked if they could serve a toned down version of the Chili Crab Pasta. The crab was a good portion - although I did have to work hard to get it all out, and the fried bao bread accompanying the plate was wonderful, but I definitely preferred the pasta that came with the Beef Short Rib Garlic Pasta over my own selected entree, and not just because of the spice. Girls' Night! Time for food and yapping! We chose a seafood boil theme and checked this place out, we got: CEVICHE OYSTERS Such a bright and refreshing start. I went here on my last night in Boston this past Sunday after seeing a real on Instagram that looked really yummy. From the outside of this restaurant, you would not realize what a cool restaurant is standing right there. However, upon walking in the vibe is definitely there. It's a moody restaurant with great light decor,, good music, and even music videos that play on the wall. Do not ask me why the music videos on the wall do not match the music playing out loud. The ceiling is very cute with very large booth. My party of four was able to sit very comfortably at ours. The menu is amazing but pretty pricey I got the Thai basil fries, which were just OK. They were thicker than I usually like my fries and did not have any perceived Thai flavor that I found however, there was a good amount of garlic. I also got the chili crab pasta. I went there for and it was amazing. My friends really liked their beef short rib pasta and Thai Caesar salad, as well, and my husband enjoyed his shrimp Poboy. An addition to all of this, my husband did order the poutine and both of us very much so disliked it. It was very savory and an unexpected way, reminding me of beef stew. Our server was kind. My only drawback was at the end of the meal, telling him that the restaurant doesn't usually do separate checks. I found this odd, especially for just three checks we needed (not a lot). If this is true, i feel this should be stated on the menu, the website, and at the beginning of interacting with a table that is a group. Anyway, he did do it for us,, and all was fine. At the end of the meal, I believe it was the manager who came by and asked how the meal was and was even inquisitive as to why we didn't like the poutine. He was kind and asked us about our trip, keeping us company as we waited for our lift in the small lobby area. Wandering down Tremont Street on a Saturday afternoon with a friend, looking for a place for lunch, and we stumbled upon Bootleg Special. It was around 2 PM, kind of an awkward hour where a lot of places have closed their brunch and have not yet opened up for dinner. We went inside and this place happened to be open. Inside it looks like a social club/lounge: you can easily imagine at night how they could clear the tables away and the space could become a jazz lounge. Because of the hour we arrived, we could choose from either their dinner menu or brunch menu. I ordered the oyster po boy and one of their brunch cocktails, a coconut lychee mimosa. The oysters were perfectly fried and layered on a thick sub roll with coleslaw and a zesty remoulade. It came with fries. The lychee mimosa was an interesting take, providing a splash of sweetness, with a lychee berry on a skewer. My friend ordered a hamburger which came wrapped like a falafel, with the tomato, onion, lettuce, and pickle inside. One of the most interesting takes of a classic hamburger I've ever seen. For the clam chowder and the shrimp + grits, they were lacking seasoning and on the blander side. Luckily, we had salt & pepper on the table and that helped immensely. Having heard a lot of good things from here so we had to check it out! Located in the south end over by new castle square before you get to Chinatown. The clam chowder could have used more seasoning and is the more watery style not thick style chowder, but they do have shakers on the table for salt and pepper! Easy experience from reservation to the action experience. The outside of the building doesn't look like much. Inside however was fun and gave me a New Orleans feel, which very unexpected for Boston. It was 3 of us and the two dishes of the people who were with me loved their meals. They the Lobster roll (I apparently didn't get a picture) and a seafood boil. They both ranted and raved about the flavor and were happy with their selections. Specifically the lobster roll had sautéed or fried lobster in it and that's what made it stand out. As I don't eat shellfish, I can't speak to either. But I did order the Hangover fried rice. And sadly, mine tasted like it had been scorched or burned. They did offer to bring me a different dish, but since they were closing down for the shift in between brunch and dinner I opted not to as I had a great experience otherwise anyways. We also were celebrating a birthday and they brought our Beignets that were very much the best ones that I've yet to have outside of New Orleans. Snuggled next to the soothing sounds of I-93 is a nondescript brick building with a cool vibe inside. Not going to lie, totally went to try the soufflé pancakes. The apple cinnamon pancakes are where it's at! However, I desperately want to come back and try more of their menu. Went here on a Friday night. Nice atmosphere. We enjoyed the r&b dj. Our waitress was very kind and helpful with suggestions. Unfortunately, our food wasn't great. The best thing was the garlic noodles. The rice has some good flavors but was crunchy. The birria bao was visually appealing, but small and lacking flavor. The gumbo had good flavor put there were some hard bits of okra I had to pull out. The dessert tower had no good aspects unfortunately. The beignets were rubbery and inedible, so we sent them back to have them done over (thinking they just weren't fresh), and they came back warmer but still not good. The manager was kind and checked on us after the beignets were done over, so that's a A+ for service. The cheesecake wasn't anything to write home about and the chocolate cake was too rich for anyone to finish, even with three of us eating. All in all, we paid a good amount of money for the food and it wasn't worth it. If you just wanted to enjoy the mood of the restaurant with a DJ with drinks rather than ordering what we had, this place would probably be great. read more

We came here for brunch and had the following (as of 12/2024). - Garlic Noodles with shrimp (+$8 for the shrimp) - $20 total ($12 for just the noodles) - This was one of my favorite dishes. In the future, I would order just the noodles as a side personally. - Bootleg Benedict - $22 - Decent but nothing mind blowing. The flavors were good but we wished there was more lobster and crab meat. Overall it was alright. - Oyster PoBoy- $19 - I would recommend the oyster PoBoy if they included more oysters. While the 6 oysters I received did span the length of the roll, it was a bit lacking in the flavor due to the oyster to bread ratio. Maybe the catfish / shrimp would be better? The flavor was good, just wish there was more! - Pancake Souffle (original) - $15 - This was a highlight of the meal. It does take a while for them to prepare it (it came last out of everything we ordered) but they were delicious! Very fluffy and not super sweet. I would definitely order this again. Overall we had no issues with the food but I will say that the service was a bit slow when it came to water / coffee refills. The only thing was that service was a bit slow, but we were chatting a lot and enjoying ourselves so it was fine. We mostly ordered apps. My faves were the birria bao, chicken wings, garlic noodles, & cajun fried rice :) I'm not a big seafood person but they had plenty of stuff that wasn't seafood. It's the type of place where you want to dress up but you know they'll put a plastic bib on you to eat dinner. It's a conundrum for sure. It may not be a first date kind of place for that reason but the seafood boils are delicious. read more

Was really looking forward to coming here. They just changed their menu this week so they don't have the same items as what is posted in photos (no biggie). We got their snow crab and shrimp boil with a "dine in Boston" meal - etouffee with a Bok Choy Caesar salad and beignets. Our first meal in Boston and we expected much better quality for our crab. It was big chain grocery store quality at best. You get 2 clusters and unfortunately none of ours had meat in the actual body and the legs were tiny. Maybe .75 lbs (server said 2 clusters and it would be around 1 lb but they don't weigh). Flavor was good but for the price, quality wasn't there. Etouffee was not good at all, my kids liked the seafood since it wasn't in the sauce but sauce tasted gritty and dirty (honestly don't know how else to explain the flavor). We left all the sauce and used the bootleg sauce from our boil. My lychee martini was more lychee than martini and the best part of the meal was our oysters ($1 Thursday special) and the beignets. The first time I ate here the service was awful and I vowed never to return. I went again with another group who wanted to try it. We were a large party and had the best service I've had in a long time! Our server, Lorina, was prompt, attentive, knowledgeable and very nice! The food is delicious, we tried a lot of the small plates. Do yourself a favor and order the wings, they are delicious! They also have a variety of cocktails for non drinkers. I passed by this place often and a friend decided to bring me here. Immediately I noticed the decor wasn't over done good vibes only down side it was a bit cold in the restaurant needs heat. Our server was friendly recommended good options from the drinks to the food. I first had the wings which were absolutely delicious definitely getting them again then I got the chowder fries which I was skeptical about but turned out to be a great choice by the server. Food is a little pricey but it is delicious. No major complaints definitely going back again. read more

Went here to celebrate my Partner and her twins birthday on the 23rd and our server was amazing. We've come here the past few years to celebrate their birthday and while we were all disappointed to see the make your own boils discontinued, our server and management that night were still able to make that night special. The highlight of the meal was the king crab, the delicious garlic noodles, and the squid inc fried rice We also had The lychee martini and these were so good and worth every penny.
