Weapon X from Long Beach signing
Yvette S.

Great dive bar & small venue that host a variety of acts. Bartenders and security are chill people. Drinks are moderately priced. Plenty of tables, seating, pool tables, and big enough area in front of the stage to pit. Parking is free and right in front of the bar inside the strip mall. Check out the calendar for upcoming events and cash entry fee (it goes to the bands, so pay up!).

Went in earlier in the evening tonight. Thought it was pretty unfriendly, especially considering how dead it was in there at the time.

First impression, why did we need reservations.... Since we didn't know the hidden entrance. Well, it's a cool concept once we entered. There's a dress code so be advised. What I found out was the entrance of the speakeasy was through a phone booth that next to the pool table of Roxanne's bar. Once reservations is made, you'll received an email with a password to enter. Enter phone booth and to connect to the inside and they'll open the door for you. We had the first reservations I believe they opened at 7pm. We were the first group to arrive. As it was my first time, we had ordered bar food and were waiting for it inside the main bar. So half an hour was used from our time limit. The speakeasy, dark and moody but perfect for the place. Special crafted cocktails by the bartenders which were great. They also have food as well, found out later. We did try the meat pie, which it was just ok. Basically an empanadas, the pickle veggies accompanied it was my favorite. It was good but nothing major to rave about. The drinks were quite nice and tasty. What they offered on the menu did have a load of good choices. Tables scattered throughout as well as bar seating. There's a piano which maybe used for live music. Overall, the moody speakeasy vibe was great. Friendly staff and bartender made some great drinks. What we had to snack on, the meat pie was just ok. They're very strict with the time limits. Once it's reached they'll let you know.

I expected to pay so much for cocktails that don't really seem balanced or designed with intent. It also took a very long time to receive drinks, the bartender seemed more into doing his sub par flair than getting drinks out at a decent time. Definitely not coming back, such a waste of money and time.

It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

After enduring weeks of record breaking heat in Long Beach, this was the perfect place to land as the Summer Breeze... Makes Me Feel Fineeee again. A very well but gently lit space that still feels cozy and spacious. The outside gives no indication of how well the inside has been designed. Great for lunch or dinner dates. Noise level was low and there's no feeling of a chaotic restaurant environment. Food/Service 1-5: 4.8 I order the shrimp and lobsters fettuccine, bone marrow as an appetizer. My company ordered the lamb burger. All dishes we beautifully plated; true works of art. Neither of us had any complaints about presentation and creativity. As far as taste and as excited as we were to dig in to our food, the ONLY setback was the lack of seasoning mainly salt. I'm aware that a Chef does their best to meet the expectations of their guest. I'm also aware that meeting everyone's expectations is impossible. To confirm my advice of needing some salt in the food I patrons the restaurant twice, two days in a row. The food needs more salt and I stand solid on that opinion. The service was great and I thanked Mel for taking such great care of us. Mel is a rockstar! Diversity score 1-5: 4 The restaurant definitely appeals to diverse crowds. It reminded of the days I frequented Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster in Harlem, NY. Go again score 1-5: 5, Absolutely. I do hope I don't have to keep bothering the server for salt and pepper.

My friend's lychee negroni was very interesting, had a sweet start with a crazy punch of an aftertaste. All the appys were tasty! My friends' favorite is the 5 sauce fries. It's a super small space (very intimate and cozy) so definitely make reservations ahead of time. We showed up very late our resy but thankfully our table was still available when we got there! I tried reaching them over the phone multiple times to let them know we would be late but it's impossible to reach them, so that's the only thing I would suggest for improvement. We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. Overall, highly recommend checking out this vibey vintage Taiwanese-inspired speakeasy (that my inner history nerd was so excited about), and I'll definitely be back to try their food items as well as their two other bar/restaurant concepts!

The final item ordered was a mushroom pasta with shrimp. The shrimp were fantastic with a light char and perfect flavoring. The pasta was good. They have a few dedicated parking spaces, but street parking was also easy to find. The exterior is modest and understated, but the neon grasshopper sign really pops and gives you a hint of what's waiting inside. Tasteful vintage artwork of women adorned the walls, while the balanced lighting created just the right mood. The cozy booths are perfect for intimate conversations, and the bar seating gives guests an opportunity to chat with the bartenders. Every detail--from the beautiful light fixtures to the convenient purse hooks--felt thoughtfully considered. The cocktail menu offers a great variety of creative craft cocktails and classics, along with beer and draft selections. Of course, I had to try the Grasshopper cocktail, and it did not disappoint! Served in a coupe glass, it was beautifully presented, delicious, and very well made. The service was prompt and attentive, and the quality of the drinks made me want to return and explore more of the menu. I also appreciate when an establishment carries its aesthetic throughout the entire space, and The Grasshopper certainly does. Even the spacious, clean bathrooms featured fun insect-themed artwork. There's also an outdoor patio for anyone who wants some fresh air or a livelier conversation with their group. I visited on a weeknight, but I noticed a DJ setup and disco ball, so it looks like the space is ready for a fun night of music as well. I love a beautifully decorated bar that feels elevated and refined--a place where you can enjoy a quality cocktail or two, feel safe and well cared for, and genuinely want to tell your friends about it.
