Came across the Shack while riding around waiting for our place to be ready to check in. Shared some of the fish tacos, the bacon shrimp, and the kids got burgers. Food was solid, kids had fun, drinks were cold and tasty. Gave 4 stars instead of five: asked to have rice and beans subbed with veggies. Came out with rice and beans. Took them back, veg came out a little later. And then they showed up on the check too having to pay extra. I get it if you left me the rice and beans and then brought the veg but dang. Again, not the end of the world, frankly other food was pretty darn good so wasn't worth making a fuss about. The lady that took care of us was great! Snagged some merch on our way out. Cool spot. We've been coming to Nagshead for years but this is the first time we've been to Bonzer Shack. We were so impressed from the Decor, the service the menu absolutely everything. We had their special wings and their smoked Gouda grits cake. Phenomenal! But my drink was called a riptide and it was off the charts. If you're anywhere in OBX you must stop here forget all the traffic in Duck and come to Bonzer's at at mile marker nine. Carol the manager was a delight!!! read more

Called on a Saturday at Noon to try and order take out and was told "we don't do takeout, it's too busy" and when I asked if I could come in and order food in the restaurant to take away I was told "No". Incredibly disappointed in Bonzer and the lack of willingness to accommodate a reasonable request from a loyal, repeat customer. Covid take out - place order over phone and pickup at front door, might be better to have takeout from outdoor stand so that more room but I didn't have any issues. Amazing food. Got the fried mahi taco special and Gouda grit cake instead of bean and rice. The tacos were very tasty and fresh, especially like the sauce. This is necessarily one of my must-visit spots in the Outer Banks, but it's certainly a great spot. Very casual vibe with a great outdoor space and live music. Food does not disappoint either. Drinks are pricey though, so not really somewhere I'd go if I'm looking for a mixed drink. read more

This is such a fun surf shack bar...Johnny the owner must be one cool creative dude...couldnt stop.drooling over the decor...and the food was just as worthy. Bonzer is a tasty place! It was my favorite server's first day back on the job, it was lunchtime and I was starved! Unfortunately my favorite server had a dinner shift but not to worry...I still ate! Of course I ordered the famous fried Gouda grit cake and ate every morsel. It was divine! Then I had a salad with fried avocado and enjoyed every bite. We stopped at bonzer shack while in town. We got there when they opened. The server was average. She wasn't very friendly. My husband got the Philly style tacos (queso steak) and they were good. I got the chicken tacos. I was disappointed. I feel like they were very average and slightly cold which I was surprised since we got there at opening. First and last time visiting. Seemed cute walking up, but we were greeted by a brash, rude elderly man. We were "seated" in 2 Adirondack chairs with no table(no problem) after being aggressively asked why we were there(dinner or just drinks.) When a table of 3 (2 adults, 1 kid) left, we asked the elderly man if we could have their table to eat the food we ordered. He abruptly answered "no," with no explanation. I then felt insulted, so I simply asked "why?" to which he scoffed and replied "there's only 2 of you, how do you expect me to run a business like that?" While I had been in the service industry for several years prior, I get it. You want to seat as many people as possible- but you DO NOT speak to patrons that way. Ever. If he IS "running" this business, I can't imagine how he treats his staff. Bartender was nice, food was decent, "host/owner/manager" or whatever he was, was bad enough for us to encourage everyone to stay far away. read more

It was okay. No crabbie patties- they said crab is too expensive right now. Mahi tacos were very well made. Only lightly coated in batter and the fish was juicy. Flour tortillas were super dry and the cabbage was you know cabbage. The sauce was like any other spicy mayo junk. It came with very boring and dry rice and beans. Husband's burger was nothing special but the smoked gouda ($1 more) and bacon ($1.25 more) helped out the beef patty that tasted like it was cooked from frozen. He did not finish his fries but if you like battered fries you will love these. Japps (Jalapeno apps) were described as baked but they had a "boiled" consistency- the cream cheese filling was delicious if you can get past the soggy peppers. Not a very welcoming place - you order at the bar, you pick up your own food in to go containers and you seat yourself. So yeah - maybe if you drink more it will seem cooler? Wish we had gone back to Mama Kwan's. read more

My dad and I decided to try out the Bonzer Shack for a late lunch. We were not disappointed. Fried green tomato BLT, good lord, it was so good! The Gouda grit cake, ehhh, not a fan! Very bland. But everything else we ate was really good. I would definitely return. The place is clean, the staff is super friendly, and the decor is very beachy. Can't wait to go back! read more

Eaters beware!!!!!! Fiancé went to use restroom and cook was in the bathroom using the stall, cook proceeded to use restroom, walked straight out back to the kitchen WITHOUT washing hands. We watched him from bar in the kitchen and he did NOT wash his hands there either; meanwhile touching plates, brining food to tables, and using bare dirty hands to get tortilla chips and plating them. This review has nothing nothing to do with the service, the staff was great & no issues at all. We ordered the chicken wings which they claim are "best of this solar system" & listed at market price. They were OK. We ordered the jerk chicken tacos, and the shrimp tacos. I did not think you could possibly make a bad taco, but this place somehow did. Two small shredded chicken tacos (12.99) with essentially nothing on it other than pickled 3 spicy cucumbers. Upcharge to add a side. The shrimp tacos were also nothing to talk about. Granted I was there in April which could be the off season but I went looking for a vegan option and the black bean burger was well seasoned and the plantain appetizer with the curry dipping sauce was good. Amazing BBQ shrimp! Description says they're skewer but they aren't served on a skewer. The veggies were grilled zucchini and squash. Other reviewers rave about the grit cake but for me is was just ok. And I love grits. My husband got Cobia, which was a special. Said it was very good but very spicy. Stopped in for lunch. Very happy with our food. Got the chicken tacos which were yummy. They were just the right blend of hot and sweet. The chicken itself was a tad dry but the cucumber salad they put on top helped and I loved the little kick of sour from it. My daughter got the pimento burger and devoured it. Cool little place. I don't recommend getting burgers or wings. We had 3 burgers and an order of wings and they were black. They don't allow you to choose how it's cooked so unless burnt to a crisp is your thing, I'd avoid. Server was very nice and crab patty was good. Fries are super good. read more

We have been here in past years and it was the best. It is just not what it used to be. The menu has been adjusted to where prices are just too high for what you are getting. My shrimp tacos came with 2 tacos, each had 2 shrimp each in them, nothing else. No slaw. No sauce. Nothing. And they were $18.
