Tried this restaurant on our second day in OBX. The food was excellent, the service was great (ask for Dixie). We had a wonderful time. On the back porch there is hulla hoops, corn hole and other fun games for both kids and adults. You can't go wrong with this place. read more

Been coming for years, but this place is horrible. Was yelled at when I got here because as I asked for a large table. Somehow was seated after 5 minutes but had the greeter yell at me that it was too big of a party. We had to go up to a window and order. $90 later for a party of 5, the food was extremely mediocre. The greeter came back and yelled at us for our kids walking around and playing out of sight of any customers. We finally left after they told us we were being difficult. This place is awful. Too many other places to go that won't be rude to us. read more

End of an era. I've been going to Bonzer Shack every year we visit OBX. I insisted that the 3 couples I am staying with go to Bonzer tonight. My wife was denied entrance because she carries her Va ID card and not her license. We are old. Old enough that id's shouldn't matter. (I'm 53, she's 42. Shhh, don't tell I told you) I didn't argue with door guy. I spoke to manager. He came out and saw my wife. Said he couldn't tell if she was over 21. I mean, is that a compliment or just an argument I can't win? Ironically, an even old guy in our party (he's 70!) used the exact same type of VA ID to get in. When I mentioned that to the doorman he tries to bait me into a fight. "Let it go man. It's not gonna be good for you" Again, I'm old. We've been coming here for years to eat lunch. Tonight we wanted to try dinner. Hostess said there was a wait for inside, but we could be seated right away outside. Host outside wanted us to sit in Adirondack chairs with no table because it was two of us. Plenty of empty picnic tables at 5:30. They've burned their bridges with us. They lost two dinner sakes, good tip and several tee shirt sales. read more

This place is a great beach hangout. The atmosphere is perfect for its location in the OBX. Good food and better service. Had fun, would recommend and will go back. Got the jerk chicken tacos and the coleslaw, both were sub par. Coleslaw was earthy and had no salt or flavor, the chicken in the tacos was super dry and all of the flavor was running out onto the tray through the juices. Definitely was not worth almost $20. THIS PLACE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BAD FOR SUPPORTING THEIR BUSINESS AND SPENDING YOUR MONEY THERE. And to be quite honest, especially after reading others reviews I believe this establishment DISCRIMINATES based on color. I am white but it wasn't hard to tell. I got the whole "the owner hires people that are also racist and allows them to provide bad service in order to discourage you from coming back" vibe. If you like bland food paired with horrible service and rude employees then this is your place! Walked in on a Friday night, no greeting at all. The place is small and wasn't packed by any means so it's not like they were too packed to notice new customers. Sat at the bar and waited at least 10 mins to be asked what we wanted. Mind you there were three bartenders behind the bar and there's maybe 16-18 seats at the bar MAX. No excuse for not being helped immediately. They examine your id like it's some kind of cryptic code they have to solve in order to get their tips for the night. I witnessed the bartenders making numerous customers uncomfortable while verifying their age. They held one mans id for so long that when he got it back, his party left. Speaking of id's you have to let them hold your license or credit card to use the cornhole bags!!! Like really? They're cornhole bags and people are spending money in your establishment, come on. The older blonde lady with glasses and guy wearing a hat behind the bar were totally rude. The lady acted as if everyone was going to dine and ditch and the guy was just too cool for school. Y'all know the type of men bartenders I'm referring to haha. He never once asked if we needed help. NEVER. yet he stood in front of us while both of our drinks were empty. He was also making rude, offensive faces to his coworkers while customers sang along with the radio. You work in a bar dude and you obviously think it's a prestigious career, so chill. The slender lady with dark hair was the only nice one. She was attentive to our needs and actually made some quick small talk. SO BASICALLY THEY WANT YOU TO WALK IN, THROW SOME MONEY ON THE BAR THEN WALK OUT. Oooh and as we were leaving at 10pm a band was walking in. My husband asked what type of music they play and one of them said "umm like Emo I guess." We're not sure if he was being sarcastic or not but the way he said it was very rude. I also read in another review the restaurant features heavy metal bands, so maybe he wasn't joking. I believe that is another way for them to discourage people of color from patronizing their business. It's an island/surfer themed bar, but they play heavy metal? Ok. The overall vibe of this place is negative. Go to jack browns down the street if you want to sit outside and/or play cornhole. That's where we ended up the rest of the night. Super chill place with tasty food and cheerful bartenders. Always had a very relaxing time here. They have a good variety of draft and bottled beer and iced or frozen cocktails, including a frozen mango jalapeno margarita. They food is tasty with large portions and unique options, great daily specials. This place is surfing-oriented. I think bonzer is a style of surf board. Really good place to get a beer and a snack if you need an hour break from the beach. read more

Mediocre food. Manager woman had a serious attitude when we had latecomers to our party who joined us and wanted to order after we'd already gotten our food. Our friends were slow in ordering food, but ordered drinks. It was 6 p.m. and the manager came over to try to move us along, somewhat rudely. Service was slow. My heart goes out to all the local restaurant staff who are stressed and stretched thin and trying to move tables. We decided to leave and walk down to another restaurant. When we returned the manager came out and yelled at my teenage daughter about leaving the car there. We should have moved the car - true - but the lady was over the line. read more

We rented a condo for a week in OBX and it's right next to this place. First impression: went here on Friday at 10pm and the kitchen was already closed. They only had chips and salsa available. Second impression: Saturday night they had some kind of live music thing (heavy metal / screamo / "devil music"). It went until 2 in the morning. And then 2 in the morning for another hour thanks to daylight savings. None of us could go to sleep. Until like 2:30am. Thanks to the loud music and louder drunk people from this place. Not cool at all. If you're going to have live music at least be considerate of the neighbors and end it at midnight or something. read more

Perfect lunch spot for families with kids! Our 3 year old was on the verge of meltdown and this restaurant kept her happy from arrival through the meal and even after the food! We enjoyed our food, can't say it was exceptional, but the entertainment for kids and adults was the best! The kids menu was also nice including a bag of Cheerios for little ones, mandarin oranges as a side option instead of fries, and a bunch of fun kid "mixed" drink options which we didn't order but they sounded yummy and very fun. I'd imagine dinner probably gets crowded bit at lunchtime we were one of just 2 families eating and playing outside which was great! read more

My husband and I stopped in for a late evening "snack" and to grab a couple drinks. The hostess and waitress were wonderful, very polite and attentive. My husband ended up leaving his phone at the table after he paid and we did not realize he was missing his phone until the following morning when we had to check out of our Air BnB and head home to Maryland early in the morning. I called the restaurant when they opened and they were so kind to have secured the phone that night after we left, and shipped it home to us in MD immediately. We cannot wait to come back!!! As someone else wrote, I rarely leave an online review. Unless... Everybody here was unfriendly, or at least not friendly, or even smiling. That includes the hostess at the front door, the order-taker at the outside window, and the employees at the pickup door outside. Most made no eye-contact and acted, in general, as if they were having a really bad day. (And perhaps they were.) That said, our pimento-burgers and fries were quite good. A good attitude from servers would make the whole experience more pleasant. Not sure I'd go back. read more

Used to be our fav place in the OBX but sadly it's changed. Went from 3 awesome fish tacos with rice and beans to only 2 tacos with raw cabbage, cheese and no sides. They did add a chunk of lettuce to fill up the plate though Everything was so bland and the shrimp was the side of dimes (no joke) and frozen. You have no contact with people as well and if you need something, sorry you have to wait to get up to a small window. Very sad as it's walking distance for us and it used to be so great! also the prices have increased drastically- 3teas , appetizer, fish tacos and after tip was $60. read more

Bonzer is very meh. Two stars for the atmosphere, totally beachy, decorated with cool surf boards. That's about the only thing we liked about Bonzer. The food was just not good. It also really rubbed me the wrong way that we wanted to sub something due to a food allergy. They didn't want to sub it out, instead they wanted to still serve the dish with the item that would cause the allergy and charge us for the sub item as an additional side. I'm not a fan of such strict rules, just say yes and then to figure out how to make a happy customer. They do have a nice little back area where the kids can stay occupied which was nice. All in all, I have no intention of visiting this spot again and can not recommend it to anyone else. There are too many solid places to eat in the OBX. read more

Very slow service. Others got food who showed up later then we did and appeared to order same/similar items. After an hour we asked why we did not have our food yet two different staff members gave two different stories. We eventually made it to the manager to be given a rude response. We were so happy to sit out on the patio at the Bonzer Shack at sunset for frozen drinks. The person who greeted us was very kind, thoughtful and helpful. We were impressed with their COVID operations- asking people to wear masks when walking around the restaurant and actually asking people to comply when they were not, and a mask-off at your table allowance. Tables were well spaced apart and sanitized when people left, and all in all we felt like we could be there responsibly and safely. The drinks were delicious and fresh. We even got a 30 minute warning before the kitchen closed. By far, this was our favorite place we went all week. Thanks guys! We will definitely be back. read more

We came here for lunch and sat outside because the weather was beautiful and it wasn't crowded. I got the tuna sandwich which tasted super fresh and amazing. My boyfriend got the crab cake sandwich which he enjoyed. Overall service was pretty fast, the ambiance was very relaxed, and the food was delicious. I would recommend trying this place out when you're in town. I imagine it's very popular during peak season. read more

I loved the outdoor space, it's perfectly set up for the ultimate outdoor dining experience. We ordered the crab taco not realizing that it was an entire crab fried, we were expecting crabmeat so that was disappointing. The queso was good but certainly not the best. I'd suggest asking more questions about the menu to avoid being disappointed. read more

When we arrived the place was packed and we were told there was a 25 minute wait , so we got a drink at the bar and played some games out back including jenga and connect four. The time went by so fast since we were having so much fun playing games. When they called our name we went in and sat at a super cute table shaped like a surfboard. The waitress was very attentive and sweet. I had the cheeseburger with french fries and my girlfriend ordered the Fish tacos with coleslaw. EveryTime I come to North Carolina I always go to the shack. Even though it's a bar it's set up as being kid friendly. My husband and I always get the chicken tacos and fish tacos and they are amazing. I can't say much about the menus because this is what I've always gotten. My daughter likes the pizza and the chicken strips on the kids menu. The location is great and they have always been open in the fall and winter when I've been down to the OBX. read more

A real disappointment! Been vacationing in OBX for 20 years and have always heard about Bonzer. So this year we decided to try it for take out. Their menu that we picked up at visitors center and website both say take out. We called with our order, person that answered the phone was rude and said no take out too busy and hung up. We called back and asked how long a wait for table was if we came in, again too busy didn't know and hung up. I guess this business is comfortable treating potential paying customers like crap. From other reviews I read it sounds like they treat the paying customers like crap, so at least we didn't give them out money! Great experience! Went Saturday night for my step-dads bday celebration around 630. Was told there would be a 20-30 minute wait but we were surprisingly seated within 10 minutes of grabbing a few skinny margs at the bar (okay my step-dad skipped the skinny marg and opted for a brewski). BTW- these skinnies are bomb. A little light on the tequila but you can always ask for an extra shot. Anyway, our waitress was super sweet and down to earth. She put us in this fitting little 3-seater table that was basically built of surfboards. We started with the fried green tomatoes, which I highly recommend, then moved onto a few entrees consistent of mahi tacos, a fried soft shell sandwich, and a burger. All were delicious! We made the comment their kitchen's fryer must be awesome because everything fried was super hot and super crispy with just that thin layer of breading. Overall great beachy dinner spot. Never made it outside to their patio, but this is one you should definitely try if you frequent OBX. read more
