I went there 8/19 for dinner with my gf Food was amazing but I had one issues with bartenders!!!!! they had horrible interactions with the customer who sat at the bar. When I say interaction I mean like their mood sucked they seemed really bored and annoyed they even had to be working. One of the guys didn't seem like he could even smile. They really didn't check on us to make sure everything was good they just went back to being on their phones. We were ready to go but couldn't get there attention To get the check for about 10 min and it wasn't even busy. great place but the bartender were horrible with customer service and interactions with the customers to make them feel welcome I wouldn't go back if they are working behind the bar read more

Quick and friendly service. Cool surfer atmosphere. The best fried green tomatoes I've ever had! We always crave fried soft shell po' boys and they had a soft taco version with very cool and refreshing coleslaw. Soft shells were on the small side but every taco had a whole one! We arrived around 2:45. It was full inside, but we were able to self- seat outside at a table under a tent. When we first came in, the hostess asked if we were able to use a QR scanned menu, and that is what they use instead of a real menu, probably because of the aftermath of COVID. Outside, once we decided what to order, we went up to a window to order. When the food is ready, they came out and called our name to pick it up. The man taking our order at the window/behind the bar acted like he couldn't be bothered to do his job, so it didn't feel welcoming. The food itself- We started with Bonzo shrimp that was served with grit cake. We've never had anything like it, and it was a good appetizer. I had a salad, which was pretty average, but good. The chicken I added was in three huge chunks, so it was a little harder to eat with the plastic ware we were provided. My boyfriend had soft shell tacos, with no complaints. He also had a mojito, and a piña colada. I happily had a virgin piña colada (I'm pregnant and haven't had a "mock tail" at all so far this week). Excellent all around. We stumbled upon this place after another place nearby told us an hour wait. Service was fantastic from the minute we walked in the door. Food was delicious and fresh. The interior was very beachy and fits perfectly in this area. If you're not hungry just grab a drink at the bar. Seems overpriced for the amount of food.. $15 for two tacos.. no sides included. My son and I split to the shrimp tacos and they were yummy but not worth $7 something a piece. We've come back multiple years but it's starting to feel like nostalgia and convenience (very close to condo) are the main reason for returning... not sure it's worth it. More of a locals place. Ordered a steak queso taco which included 2 tacos with hardly anything in them. I will have to say the beef was tender. This was $13 for 2 tacos. After eating I noticed a special board at the opposite end of the restaurant that had a soft shell crab option for tacos. If I had known I would of ordered those. So dining outside in COVID times with young children is less than normal with outdoor picnic tables and take out containers, but we enjoyed the vibe, the food and the drinks at Bonzer's Shack. We had 5 adults and 2 kids and sampled a variety of the cocktails and IPAs and had a couple of kid's milks. A couple of guys in the group were impressed by the stuffed jalapeños and definitely confirmed their spiciness. A few people ordered the fish tacos on special and really enjoyed them as well as the steak tacos. I got a salad with delicious sweet chili dressing that was wonderful followed by the crab cakes. The crab cakes and sauce are spectacular. It was all in all a great experience and we will be back. read more

We'd been staring at the menu on the bulletin board of our rented house all week... and after looking up several reviews that said this restaurant is taking Covid seriously, we decided to order. When we arrived for take out, Everyone was masked, distancing, and sanitizing. Picking up was a fast and friendly experience. We were even prompted to pay by phone. Our food was great- the burger was large and clearly homemade. The grits cake is amazing. Crispy outside, creamy inside. My fried green tomatoes were delicious. Well we stopped here to get some dinner and were very pleased . The service was great and the food even better. It was a Wednesday night after 7:00 so there wasn't a wait . I am sure during peak you could expect a wait . There is an outside area when the weather is good . A decent bar area. A surf shack atmosphere. What else would you expect when relaxing in OBX . To start with the positive, the fried shrimp and the cocktail sauce were tasty. But my wife had the fish taco with grilled mahi, and it was underseasoned. The coleslaw was also bland. My son got the cheese pizza, which was smaller than any cheese pizza we've gotten in any other restaurant. Three of us got fries, and they were satisfactory, but not outstanding in any way. Overall, it was disappointing. With so many excellent places in the OBX, or hopes were high, but our expectations were not met. read more

Came in with a party of 9- only reason they get a two is how fast we got seated Quickly realized why. They are not accommodating to any changes to exactly what is listed on the menu. Simply asked to change steak out of chicken and it was refused - which would be cheaper for them in the long run. Servers don't seem to know what they're doing and seems very all over the place. We like to start with drinks before dinner. Went in for drinks before at 4:10 pm and was turned away. The hostess was willing to seat us for dinner but when we told her we wanted drinks she turned us away and said there weren't any seats available. Only one table had people. The rest were empty. The outdoor patio is gone. Well, I guess technically it's still there, but the Cornhole, Jenga, Ping Pong, and life-sized Connect Four are gone. So it seems is the live music since their stage has been demolished. And DEFINITELY the vibe that once accompanied this place...that's clearly dead and gone, witnessed by how dead this place is in the offseason...the locals don't touch this place! We've been coming to Nagshead for years but this is the first time we've been to Bonzer Shack. We were so impressed from the Decor, the service the menu absolutely everything. We had their special wings and their smoked Gouda grits cake. Phenomenal! But my drink was called a riptide and it was off the charts. If you're anywhere in OBX you must stop here forget all the traffic in Duck and come to Bonzer's at at mile marker nine. Carol the manager was a delight!!! read more

Came across the Shack while riding around waiting for our place to be ready to check in. Shared some of the fish tacos, the bacon shrimp, and the kids got burgers. Food was solid, kids had fun, drinks were cold and tasty. Gave 4 stars instead of five: asked to have rice and beans subbed with veggies. Came out with rice and beans. Took them back, veg came out a little later. And then they showed up on the check too having to pay extra. I get it if you left me the rice and beans and then brought the veg but dang. Again, not the end of the world, frankly other food was pretty darn good so wasn't worth making a fuss about. The lady that took care of us was great! Snagged some merch on our way out. Cool spot. This is necessarily one of my must-visit spots in the Outer Banks, but it's certainly a great spot. Very casual vibe with a great outdoor space and live music. Food does not disappoint either. Drinks are pricey though, so not really somewhere I'd go if I'm looking for a mixed drink. read more

This is such a fun surf shack bar...Johnny the owner must be one cool creative dude...couldnt stop.drooling over the decor...and the food was just as worthy. This review has nothing nothing to do with the service, the staff was great & no issues at all. We ordered the chicken wings which they claim are "best of this solar system" & listed at market price. They were OK. We ordered the jerk chicken tacos, and the shrimp tacos. I did not think you could possibly make a bad taco, but this place somehow did. Two small shredded chicken tacos (12.99) with essentially nothing on it other than pickled 3 spicy cucumbers. Upcharge to add a side. The shrimp tacos were also nothing to talk about. We stopped at bonzer shack while in town. We got there when they opened. The server was average. She wasn't very friendly. My husband got the Philly style tacos (queso steak) and they were good. I got the chicken tacos. I was disappointed. I feel like they were very average and slightly cold which I was surprised since we got there at opening. First and last time visiting. Seemed cute walking up, but we were greeted by a brash, rude elderly man. We were "seated" in 2 Adirondack chairs with no table(no problem) after being aggressively asked why we were there(dinner or just drinks.) When a table of 3 (2 adults, 1 kid) left, we asked the elderly man if we could have their table to eat the food we ordered. He abruptly answered "no," with no explanation. I then felt insulted, so I simply asked "why?" to which he scoffed and replied "there's only 2 of you, how do you expect me to run a business like that?" While I had been in the service industry for several years prior, I get it. You want to seat as many people as possible- but you DO NOT speak to patrons that way. Ever. If he IS "running" this business, I can't imagine how he treats his staff.
