While I know that in my original review I said that we'd "be back", Bonefish is just out of the way enough to not be on our regular restaurant rotation radar. However, hubby's birthday was this past Friday, & he was in the mood to give it another go, so that's where we found ourselves Friday night. Had an 8 p.m. reservation, & were glad we did, as the place was jam-packed. We were cheerfully seated in about 10 minutes at a nicely linen-set table covered with a sheet of brown paper (which actually does look nice & makes cleaning/resetting tables uber-quick for the staff). The ceiling-set lighting (we were at a center table instead of a side booth) was a little uncomfortable, as it had my husband in the dark, & me lit up like I was about to belt out a show tune.
We started with a couple of the house special drinks - "Parker's Margarita" ($6.90 ea.) - a very tasty Sauza Gold Tequila & Grand Marnier Margarita with excellent flavor & just enough "punch". These arrived with a lovely square of warm foccacia bread and a small bowl of fragrant Parmesan-spiked herbed olive-oil dipping sauce. And since everyone seems to rave about them, split an order of the infamous "Bang Bang Shrimp" ($9.50) - small batter-fried shrimp tossed in a creamy spicy sauce & served on a bed of chopped lettuce in an oval ramekin. Deliciously spicy for a chain restaurant.
Decided on trying one of the night's specials, their "Ocean Mixed Grill Dinner for Two" ($39.80). This came with 2 salads (mixed greens, sliced tomato, Kalamata olives, & a few slices of hearts of palm), one "house side" of spiced chickpeas, & a side each of choice (whipped potatoes for hubby; potatoes au gratin for me). Salads were nice-sized, chickpeas were just as good as last time, potatoes were "okay", but served molded a la "ice cream scoop" like one expects from a more Howard-Johnson's caliber (& priced) restaurant. My au gratin potatoes were literally glued together in their little ball & rather difficult to pull apart. We didn't finish either. And for the money, the "Mixed Grill" was a bit disappointing as well. This was listed as consisting of "White Tuna (as in Albacore Tuna - not Escolar), Jumbo Shrimp + Scallops, Chilean Sea Bass, & Atlantic Salmon - paired with all 4 signature sauces" (Warm Mango Salsa, Chimichurri Sauce, Lemon Butter, & Pan Asian). Okay - I kid you not here. A long narrow rectangular tray was brought out containing two tiny shrimp, two small sea scallops, & one strip each of the above-mentioned fish. Each strip was only about 1" wide x 3"-4" long, making for about 2 small bites each. And except for the Warm Mango Salsa, which was liberally spiked with either fresh Thai or Habanero peppers, we couldn't tell any of the other sauces apart. Don't get me wrong - I'm not advocating for huge portions requiring doggy bags, it just seemed more than a little puny for just shy of $40.00. If the salads hadn't been so large (aka somewhat filling), we wouldn't have left very satiated, even if we'd finished our gluey potatoes. We decided to skip dessert, but hubby did enjoy a 2nd delicious Margarita (birthday & all - lol!).
Bottom line: Service was excellent (if a "little" rushed) & food was tasty & cooked properly, but the experience as a whole didn't hit the same mark it did last time (2010). I'm leaving it at 3 stars, since perhaps it was just our entrée choice this time that was a poor one. Bill before tax & tip came to $70.00 even. Will give it another try some time in the future. read more
