It was founded in 2002 and there are locations found in the U.S. and internationally. The first time I had BonChon was in Massachusetts and I fell in love with it. At this location in New Haven, CT, the restaurant had a high ceiling and a cool bar. The service was good and the food came out fast. BonChon is known for their double fried chicken wings. I had the 10 pc wings meal with pickled radishes. I got half-half of Yangnyeom and spicy flavors. I love the spicy, it definitely has a kick. I also love the Yangnyeom, which had notes of soy sauce from what I tasted. I like to get a side of white rice and Kewpie mayo to complete the meal. My family also got the takoyaki fried octopus balls; it's topped with Kewpie mayo, katsu sauce, and scallions. The balls were super good, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. My son's had the plain udon noodles which came out in a hot pot, so it was boiling; it satisfied their picky taste buds. My family and I had a tasty lunch there. I like the location because it's near a bubble tea place and a Korean corn dog spot. It's also walking distance to many other attractions. We parked at a nearby parking garage. After a long day of flights, airport madness, and checking into our hotel up the block. We thought to get a good meal in for the night. This was close to us, so we just walked on over. Menu looks good.....some clarification. The difference between "Boneless" and "Strips" is the boneless is like nuggets and you get 12, but strips are like chicken strips, but you get 10 pieces. We opted to get the 10 piece strips, half soy garlic, half kbbq. It was definitely crispy and fried hard, not as juicy but it was fine, sauce flavors were good. We also got Bulgogi Fried Rice and an order of Takoyaki as a side. We were darn hungry! Rice was very flavorful and totally hit the spot with the chicken! Takoyaki had that chunk of octopus in the middle, careful.... hot in the middle! Don't forget to get the side of pickled radish, perfect accompaniment! We stopped in here while visiting New Haven. It wasn't for a full meal, just for a little snack. It was worth it. Clean with lots of tables and a great staff. There was a TV which was showing a baseball game at the time. There's street parking available with meters, but you have to be lucky to get a spot depending the time you come. It was New Year's Day and the spot I planned to eat at was closed. My husband looked up Korean food and found Bonchon New Haven. We were seated right away and brought some ice waters. We decided to skip the appetizers and share beef bulgogi and chicken katsu. Both came out hot and plenty of food. The beef bulgogi was in a cast iron skillet it was accompanied by sautéed green onions, peppers, and mushrooms and a side of rice. The marinated ribeye was so delicious I wish I knew what the marinate actually was. The chicken katsu was so crispy and thinly sliced it had two sauces on top one of them being a spicy mayo. We went to celebrate and dine in on a weeknight but unfortunately reached a little late and had to do takeout instead. I was pleasantly surprised to see good amount of vegetarian options and spicy options. My indian palate was very happy to see vegetarian potstickers which I had to get and I also asked those to be spicy and they indeed were. I also wanted to get some recommendations from the staff and they said Bibimbap which is a wholesome choice as it has rice, quinoa, vegetables, egg, lettuce and a side of spicy sauce. I was not the fan of the sauce but the rest of the dish had a terrific combination together. It had a decent portion size. My husband tried the same Bibimbap with seafood and he loved it too. He also didn't enjoy the sauce too much. We would surely want to try more stuff on their menu and would go back. Their service and ambiance was nice and pleasant. We came for late lunch during weekdays, easy parking right outside the restaurant. Restaurant was empty during this hour .. There's happy hour from 3 to 7pm you can enjoy beer or wine. Excellent. I can't speak highly enough of their chicken wings, they're the crispiest wings I've had anywhere. The soy garlic ones are perfectly savory, not too spicy but certainly not bland. The bulgogi at this location seems rather plain, it was tastier at one of the California locations I visited. Get a cup of spicy mayo for dipping/drizzling if you get anything with the bulgogi or you'll probably be disappointed. The New Haven location is fine, nothing to rave about but there was nothing to complain about either. The service is acceptable, just not above and beyond. They can accommodate large parties if needed, but it's not a large location so on a busy night you're better off getting takeout. It's a chain, and you definitely get chain vibes when you're in there. Not local feeling, but it's the best chain restaurant I've been to. The rest of my party chose a bulgogi bibimbap - it was more than plenty for one person and she ended up having to take it home! Arrived in the hot stone bowl and with fresh gochujang sauce ready to mix at your spice comfort levels. The last friend got the lunch special half soy garlic/half spicy boneless chicken (9pieces). We thought this would be too small but surprisingly turned out to be a nice full lunch. The winner of this was the freshly pickled radish - crunchy and a lil sweet/not too sour! This place is my family's fried chicken obsession for over a year now. We've stopped going to Popeye's, KFC, etc. because Bonchon is that good, and we make a 40+ minute round-trip drive to eat here. It's a commitment. We get the Family Pack each time, which comes with a massive pile of wings and drumsticks, fried rice, french fries, and pickled radish. It's a good deal at the $40 mark, and we always have lots of leftovers with a family of 4. There are other locations like the one in West Hartford where we've gotten other things like their bulgogi burritos and bibimbap, also quite good. I've done pick up orders as well as eaten at the restaurant, and it is consistently good each time, which is one of the reasons I'm giving this place five stars--there are restaurants that *can* be good but you kind of roll the dice each time you go there hoping that all the stars are aligned and the experience is decent, but Bonchon has really done an excellent job through this pandemic to provide safe, courteous, and efficient service along with good-tasting food every time. Yes, parking in this area can absolutely suck--not the restaurant's fault. Best place to park is on the meters on George St. If you're driving, pass the restaurant, turn right on MLK Jr., then right again on York, then right on George. Find an open metered spot on the right hand side before you reach College St. Again. I don't have much experience with Korean food so she recommended me a few dishes that she thought I would like, and I decided to order them all! I think this dish really needs a sauce, so if you are like me, ask for some soy sauce. - Japchae: This was was my favorite! Very flavorful dish, it is stir-fried glass noodles and vegetables. - Bulgogi: Marinated beef (kind of sweet) with white rice. - Boneless chicken strips: We ordered half & half, half plain and half soy garlic.
