When I'm craving Korean comfort food in Chapel Hill, it's nice to know there's a Bonchon close to campus. I've had the soy garlic and spicy wings before, but today I decided to try all of their wing flavors. The wings came out quickly and were fried to perfection. One thing I really appreciate about Bonchon is how the batter stays crispy, even after the wings have cooled down. Soy garlic and spicy are still my favorites, but the K-BBQ and yangnyeom flavors were pretty good too. Pros: The food came out quickly, and the service was friendly. I highly recommend ordering online about 15-20 minutes in advance so your food is ready when you arrive. Cons: Street parking can be a little challenging depending on the time of day. read more

This places definitely surprised us. The chicken was very flavorful and crispy. The rice also had tons of flavor as well. The chicken was huge. We also had an order of donuts that was the perfect sweet afterward. read more

Bonchon is a classic and great go-to for whenever you're craving korean fried chicken. We ordered through uber eats and got the chicken katsu and seoul appetizer sampler. The seoul appetizer is a great choice since it offers potstickers, drumsticks, wings, street corn, and bulgogi fries. I wouldn't recommend ordering on uber eats again because most of our food was pretty soggy and we didn't have the crunch we would get in the restaurant. Soy garlic is my favorite flavor for the chicken and the chicken is always juicy! read more

I recently went to Bonchon with some friends, and I'd highly recommend ordering family style so you can try a variety of dishes. They're known for their fried chicken -- hand-battered, double-fried, and hand-brushed with your choice of flavor -- and it definitely lived up to the hype. We split our 30-piece wings into two flavors, Soy Garlic and Korean BBQ, which was perfect for sampling a bit of both. The chicken came out hot and fresh, perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also ordered the Bulgogi Fried Rice and Tteokbokki to share, and it ended up being just the right amount of food for five people. Service was friendly and quick, and everything tasted freshly made. Overall, a great experience -- I'll definitely be back to try more of their chicken options and dishes! read more

I was very disappointed. The chicken was cold and the fried rice was hard and tasted old. I was not impressed at all. Maybe it was an off day. read more

I enjoyed this visit- it was definitely a bit pricey for what it was as chicken wings and fried rice was what we got. I was a bit frustrated that the sauces couldn't be put in the side as that's how the owner keeps it and there really wasn't a way to trade / upgrade the side that comes with the wings from cold slaw to fried rice- so the slaw went to waste. The food and service is where the stars are. The chicken is the crispiest fried chicken I've eaten and the fried rice was also pretty good. I do wish that the fried rice being as expensive as it was had more quantity since there wasn't much. It was a clean place overall and thankfully it was during a Dook/UNC game so it was quiet and we were in and out before the game ended. read more

Solid Korean food in a pinch. They have all the staples, and they all taste great. Because this is on Franklin Street, it's hard to park in front and pick up a meal, but if you're in the area anyway, it's worth stopping by. The staff is friendly, the food is always on point, and the atmosphere is fast casual-- you can grab a to-go order or dine in. read more

This place is gross. Please avoid this establishment. They don't let people eat upstairs, I went up there and there's dead bugs and cobwebs all over the place like it hasn't been clean in years. The coolers under the tvs don't even work and are filled with mold. The food doesn't taste like other Bonchon locations, I don't know where they are sourcing their products which is scary ! The customer service is not existent. This location is not like other Bonchons, I wonder if Corporate even knows how this place is operating. I wish I was lying but check it out for yourself read more

So delicious! The fried chicken I had here was absolutely the best I've had with Triangle, it was super flavorful and spicy, but still a great crunch. Everything we ordered from the menu was delicious and a great portion size. There is plenty of seating inside, and the food also came out quickly. Definitely would go back. read more

Spicy Boneless Chicken Wings from Bonchon - Chapel Hill, NC Bonchon's spicy boneless wings really don't hold back. If you're the kind of person who thinks "spicy" should mean sweat-on-your-brow intensity, then congratulations--you've found your flavor soulmate. The wings are crispy-crackly on the outside, tender on the inside, and coated with a glossy, fiery glaze that kicks in with authority. Each bite feels engineered to test your spice tolerance, in the best possible way. Coleslaw Sidekick The coleslaw isn't just filler--it plays a crucial role in cooling things down. Creamy, tangy, and just a bit sweet, it's a counterbalance to the heat that rescues your taste buds right when they're begging for mercy. Think of it as the culinary equivalent of the friend who keeps you grounded after you've said "yes" to one too many thrill rides. Takeout Experience Pickup was smooth, packaging was secure, and everything arrived fresh and still warm. No soggy wings, no leaky containers--just a reliably satisfying takeout experience that hits the spot whether you're binging a show or plotting world domination from your couch. If wings could talk, these would shout. Ready to crown Bonchon the spice king of Franklin Street? read more

Went to Bonchon for lunch with my coworkers and everything we got was amazing! The wings were cooked to perfection and had a great crispy outside. Bonchon is SO good! My family went here on my brother's recommendation and food is awesome! Our server was super nice and the food came out fast and hot! Chicken wings are crispy and tender. The bulgogi hit all the right notes and the beef pieces got crispy on the sizzle plate throughout the meal. The flavors here are really good, not to mention, they also have a 99.5 sanitation score. For a chain restaurant, it's very good and I will be back. read more

The food came out really fast. My family and I were looking for a spot to eat post half marathon. Definitely hit the spot. The 30pc wings we got half and half spicy and non-spicy to share between 6 people. The spicy was reaaaally hot. Just a warning. The tteokbokki was also fairly spicy too. The rice cakes were cooked really well, not too undercooked or overcooked. The japchae was a good balance to all the spice, as was the edamame. The bibimbap was also really tasty and I really liked the crispy parts of the rice at the bottom of the bowl. Service was really responsive and accommodated our larger party. This is a restaurant that is conveniently located across from UNC-Chapel Hill. Great spot for students to chow down and study. read more

So yummy!! They really nail Korean fried chicken to its core. We got a shared order of small (10 pc) soy garlic wings, and they were packed with flavor and so messy to eat lol. Not to mention, the chicken itself was definitely fall-off-the-bone level and really juicy! We also got bibimbap and udon noodles, both were large portions. The udon broth was very flavorful, and my friend said her bibimbap was good as well. Definitely will be coming back to eat more of their chicken!! read more

Stopped by while exploring UNC. Bonchon is easily located across from campus. I had the spicy and garlic drumsticks. The spicy wings were good and had a mild hot taste. The pork buns were good and full of flavor. They also had a hint of spice. Second time in a Week! This time for dinner. Atmosphere was busy yet calm. Most of the picnic tables outside where full. We just had to come back and get more of this delicious chicken. Service was great as usual. Server was very attentive even though it was getting busy. We got The takoyaki for an appetizer. So good. Best I've had on the East Coast so far. For our main we shared a order of kimchi bacon /egg fried rice. Just the right amount of kimchi and bacon flavor. The Star as always was the soy garlic fried chicken. We had been craving it since Friday. Lol. Seriously it's so freaking good. My girlfriend got the 4pc drumsticks and I got the 10pc wings. Our new favorite friend chicken. Hands down. Lemme tell you they even heat up crispy when you taken them home and have them as left overs the next day. It's unreal! Get this Chicken ... ASAP . read more

I'm kind of surprised this Bonchon is only rated 3.5 stars on Yelp (112 reviews at the time I write this). I generally like the Bonchon brand and have yet to come across a location where I had a mediocre or bad experience. I was happy to see that a Bonchon exists in Chapel Hill. The food we got from this location really hit the spot for me so I think these guys deserve a solid 4. My wife disagrees and thought the chicken could've been more flavorful (comparing it to other Korean fried chicken we've had). If she was a Yelper, she'd probably give this place 3 stars ("A-OK") so maybe I shouldn't be surprised at the average 3.5-star rating. If you haven't heard of Bonchon, it's a worldwide chain of Korean fried chicken restaurants. It's pretty popular and fairly well-known. Currently, there are over 100 locations in the US and four in North Carolina: this one, one in Greensboro, and two in Charlotte. This Bonchon location in Chapel Hill opened in 2018 directly across the street from UNC's historic quad, McCorkle Place. I'm not aware of any free parking in the immediate vicinity. We street-parked around the corner on Henderson which is metered. I suggest using the ParkMobile app to pay for and monitor your parking. It's convenient. We didn't pay to park since we were just picking up an order we had called in. At the time of our visit, Bonchon was not offering dine-in service due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. They offered takeout and delivery only. There were some uncovered tables on the brick sidewalk outside, but that was it. Entry into the restaurant was prohibited and orders were transacted through a makeshift window at the entrance. Inside, the restaurant looked nice; clean and modern with a spacious dining room and a bar with TVs and beers on tap. Some Bonchon stores allow you to order online. Not this location, unfortunately. Delivery options vary between locations. This one offers DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats: https://bit.ly/37eeW7M. There are two numbers you can call to place a pickup order: 984-234-0788 (the number on this Yelp listing) and 984-234-0789. We ordered a nice little variety. You can view the menu for this location by following the link in the paragraph above. Here's what we got: Main Dishes * Tteokbokki ($10.95) - rice cakes simmered in spicy sauce with fish cakes, scallions, and onions topped with mozzarella cheese and kimari * Bibimbap, Bulgogi ($13.95) - white rice, quinoa, assorted seasonal vegetables, sesame seeds, nori, and egg served with Bonchon Bibimbap Sauce; and bulgogi - thinly-sliced marinated ribeye Signature Fried Chicken * Combo (wings & drums), Medium ($24.65) - 10 wings and 5 drums - Soy garlic flavor - Includes complimentary side of pickled radish or coleslaw (we chose pickled radish) Side * Kimchi ($3) Everything tasted as I expected: delicious. From this order, the only Bonchon item that was new to me was the Bibimbap. I'd never tried their bibimbap before, previously. It was good. Not incredible or anything, but just all-around filling and satisfying. Comfort food. Bonchon's bibimbap is different for a couple reasons: (1) There's quinoa in it. Not bad. (2) It comes with a packet of company-branded "Bibimbap Sauce." Traditionally, bibimbap is served with gochujang (red chili paste), but I think Bonchon's sauce is a dialed-down version. It has a little heat to it, but it's not nearly as spicy. The "assorted seasonal vegetables" included raw lettuce and cooked carrots, bean sprouts, and mushrooms. The bowl also included strips of egg. The pieces of beef were tender and savory and topped with sesame seeds. The fried chicken was bomb. What I love about Bonchon's double-fried chicken is how crispy and crunchy the skin is. It's exceptionally crispy and crunchy, among the crispiest and crunchiest around, in my opinion. Bonchon only offers two flavors: soy garlic and spicy. Both my wife and I prefer the soy garlic. It's sweet and salty, garlicky, sticky, and just all-around yummy. Compared to other Korean fried chicken joints, Bonchon's chicken is relatively light when it comes to sauce. Their chicken isn't drenched in sauce nor is it overly thick and sticky. I think the meat could stand to be a *little* bit juicier, but that's just me being picky. It's fine the way it is. The company hasn't grown as big as it has without having excellent and reliable recipes. My wife doesn't like Bonchon's Tteokbokki as much as I do. I don't recommend it unless you like spicy food. Bonchon's tteokbokki is nice and spicy. I like how their tteokbokki comes not only with soft and appetizingly chewy pieces of rice cake, but also fish cake and kimari, which are deep-fried spring rolls made with seaweed on the outside and japchae (glass noodles) on the inside. I find the latter especially tasty. The tteokbokki comes with a lot of red spicy sauce which is actually good for dipping your fried chicken into. Service was great. Our order was ready on time in less than 15 minutes. read more

Solid food with great options. Nice casual atmosphere for a more chill date night spot

I was craving Korean fried chicken and I always forget there's a BonChon in Chapel Hill. I ordered on doordash and got a 10 piece, half spicy and half soy garlic. When I opened the box, I really couldn't tell a difference between the 2 flavors. Yes, it delivered a nice crunch but the flavor was disappointing to me. I feel like there was barely any sauce, especially for the spicy ones. I've had BonChon in Charlotte and the spicy wings had a lot more sauce and was actually pretty spicy. I'm a little hesitant to order from here again in Chapel Hill (Accidentally posted this to the Charlotte location when it was meant for the Chapel hill location). read more

I was staying right by UNC on New Years and I needed some to eat. While many places were closed, Bonchon was open. A girl at the front was very nice and took my order, and gave it to me when it was ready. The store seemed spacious (though I did takeout). The chicken was crispy and juicy....perhaps bit too much on the batter. Their pricing is not cheap but I would rather order from them than regular wing places. A small piece of hair was in my box was disappointing. But it was still overall good! read more

Bonchon was great!! Service was fast and everyone was welcoming. The kimchi coleslaw was savory and refreshing, and the wing+drumstick combo was great. The chicken was juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. People have commented on the price - however, you get an enormous amount of food for the price. I ended up getting two meals out of this, as I couldn't finish it all and had to take the rest home. Definitely give Bonchon a try! read more

Pros: this is a chain restaurant so they clearly know what they're doing. The place is clean, the service is friendly, the menu is attractive and clear, the food comes out in a very reasonable amount of time, the portions are very generous, the prices are very reasonable. Cons: Parking is a bit frustrating, just like anyplace on Franklin Street. The food wasn't my favorite- the Takoyaki were a bit gummy compared to ones I've had at other restaurants. The chicken wasn't my favorite- I'd rather go to Heavenly Buffaloes, M Kokko or Chicken Bee. The soy garlic was fine, but the sweet crunch had such an odd smell that I couldn't eat more than a bite (although my husband was a fan of this, so I admit that this is just personal preference). Worth giving it a shot, but nothing outstanding. read more

Great food. Great prices. Enough said! The tacos were the bomb. The meat and sauce are seasoned well and it tastes like an explosion in your mouth. Being cooped up for 5 days during hurricane Florence got me a little antsy and very desperate to have outside sources of food. We quickly decided that korean fried chicken would be our food of choice and ubered over in the rain. Stepping in, I couldn't help but feel a little "depressed". Although spacious, the interior was dark and lacked the inviting feel of other k-chicken places I've frequented. Maybe it was a combination of the rain and dark ceiling/walls... FOOD: The meal itself was okay. I mean, the menu is the same everywhere. Chicken skin was crispy, meat was hot and juicy, BUT lacked some sauce overall. I'm used to sauce coating the entire chicken, not just certain parts because thats what gives it flavor! I know, I've been spoiled by my local k-chicken joints :( We also ordered chicken tacos. Let me tell you, don't be a fool. Its like ordering beef stew noodles at a dim sum place. When you visit a chicken wing place, stick with the chicken wings. SERVICE: Medicre at best? Girl was friendly, refilled water our water once, brought the check and a togo box the last time. Checked on the next table several times but somehow skipped over us. Maybe we weren't wearing bright enough colors? Who knows. read more
