Another Milwaukee gem! When I moved to Milwaukee I was seriously concerned that the food would be lacking. I've learned that you just need to know where to look. Bombay Sweets is in a little bit of a rundown area and isn't anything to look at. The food however, is amazingly good. We sampled the Somosa, curry, and a platter. I honestly couldn't tell you what was in everything but it really hit the spot. My only complaint, the bread was slightly greasy. We carried out and realized we had 5 different sauces after everything was unwrapped. I'm pretty sure we didn't eat them properly but they seemed to go well with everything. My favorite was the yoghurt, it was slightly more sour than what I would consider a traditional yoghurt sauce. Portions were moderate, for the price they were definitely reasonable. Don't bother with the lemon rice as other reviewers have suggested, it's expensive for what you get. I'll definitely be back to try new things! read more

Remembered how much I love Bombay Sweets on a visit last week. Giant, crispy dosas extending a hand's length over my plate, spicy sambal gravy, punctuated with pods of hot pepper & I think black mustard seeds, or coriander, or peppercorns? The cool, verdant coconut chutney in a cup far too small. A tart, refreshing mango lassi, sadly served in a Styrofoam cup. And the $.75 samosas, spicy & freshly fried. Don't leave without a box of sweets, seriously, especially the texturally awesome pretzel-shaped honey crisps & gulab jamun, split & stuffed with sweet homemade cheese, studded with chopped pistachios. I agree with everything Laura said. I actually kind of like the atmosphere here. It's a family operated short order joint and it kind of feels like a cafeteria with a bakery case. The food is unpretentious but it's also quite good. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. And the dessert case warrants your exploration as well. read more

To me, having eaten many times chutney, etc. I ordered 3 orders (they come 2 to an order) through GrubHub. There were 2 small to medium sized samosas to a container, and were soggy, being submerged in curry (a nice curry though), chickpeas and yogurt. I was quite disappointed. If you don't want them soggy and swimming in 3 sauces, and you order through GrubHub, put in a note that you want the samosas dry and separate, and each sauce in a separate container. read more

I didnt go here much as it was not close to my place but every time i went the food was really good. I never had the complete dinner here but i prefered the appetizers. I liked the chat/samosa. Chana batura is really good and size of batura is really good. I think they should have a bugger bin for the used plates as the one they have it gets fill pretty soon. Surely to try :). read more

First of all the lady was super grumpy and was in no mood to take orders , and to add to it she was soo grumpy that she started shouting at us saying we were not providing our orders correct , when communicated in English , the reply was I don't speak English . I'm not a vegetarian. In fact, when I got the invitation to check out Bombay Sweets I was eating a giant steak. Not exactly a great warmup for a vegetarian meal, I'll admit it. Vegetarian food makes me nervous, and I really can't say why. It's probably that there is still a part of me that is 6 years old and hates veggies, but I digress. I ordered what I figured would be small snack items: 2 samosas and 2 kachoris. Delicious? Yes. Small? Absolutely not. Dig deep, Kyle, dig deep. Additionally, I have no idea what the green business included with the samosas was, but it was delicious. Joanna T says it best: This is the place to be for broke asses. Insanely good food at insanely good prices. It's not your standard restaurant-style ordering and delivery, though, so you might be a bit thrown off at first. Just go up to the counter and tell the person behind it what you want - be it dessert, drinks, or food - as many times as you want. Somehow, they'll remember everything you've ordered during your whole visit and then you pay when you want. When your food is ready, they'll call you over and you pick up your tray. They use disposable dinnerware, like others have mentioned, but I can't believe people are throwing fits about this and taking off stars. Although I've got a longstanding personal boycott against Dunkin' Donuts for this exact reason, so I guess I'm a big hypocrite... A local restaurant doing it seems a lot less grievous than a giant international coffee seller, though. At any rate, the forks, spoons, knifes, napkins, and water are all in a back corner; so if you can't find them, that's where they are. The food is top notch, although the menu is a little daunting if you're not super familiar with Indian food (like me, who always just goes for the buffet and never pays attention to the names of the food I'm eating. Or who grew up with an Indian best friend but who was just taught that everything is "curry"). Yesterday I had the (#43) Vegetable Korma (a yellow curry with cheese squares), roti (bread), and two samosas. The korma was AMAZING and the roti was fantastic, but I can't say the samosas were the best I've ever had. But they were huge and for $0.75, you can't go wrong. I asked some Indian gentlemen by the sweets what they would recommend for dessert, and I loved everything they suggested. Worst Indian food ever. I had Pani Poori and Uttapam, I can say horrible could be a better term for the quality of food they served to us. Never going there again. Being in Milwaukee, we don't really have many options for India food, but i can't compromise with the taste and quality when I am paying for it and that I also my favorite Indian food. This is not a fair review. I don't "enjoy" the food here. I'm not saying that it's bad food. Maybe I can agree with other reviews and says it's great vegetarian fair at a super price. I just don't like leftovers that much. And that's not fair to say either. Maybe food scooped from pots that have been simmering for hours is normal. And I enjoyed the flavors. But I got two flavors of Indian goo on rice. Tasty stuff. I'm just wish it had been layered over lamb or chicken. It's like I've always said, vegetarian dishes taste great on chicken. It's hard to beat low prices and having food served faster than most restaurants can take your order. It was busy on Friday night and I might have waited two minutes tops for my food. It took longer to make my selection from the very easy to read menu that covers the north wall of the place. It's like the endless selections on a Greek menu but on a 8 by 15 ft wall floor to ceiling. I can't even talk about the sweets. It's a huge selection of the weirdest treats I've ever seen. We don't do Indian much. But I'll bring my wife next time. There is a lot more food to experiment with. And I loved the rice as well. Update: if you are unfamiliar with dough style Indian sweets then BE CAREFUL! We tried an assortment of good looking cookie style things. The flavors were mild and exotic. Holy cheap delicious food, Batman! Bombay Sweets was nowhere on my radar until a friend suggested it for lunch recently. I enjoy some curry, so I heartily agreed to go. I arrived first, and was immediately intimidated by the counters and counters of sweets and treats they have available for the public. The menu (which I didn't notice at first because it's hanging on the wall away from the tables) is extensive, and a tad bit confusing if you're not familiar with the items already. The woman behind the counter is extremely friendly and helpful, though, so that's no problem. I got the vegetarian sampler of the day, though I'm not sure why they bother calling it the vegetarian sampler because everything there is vegetarian. My food was delicious, and gave me a little taste of a lot of things. Don't expect fancy presentation. Everything came on a segmented styrofoam plate on a plastic tray. I recommend trying some of the appetizers and a lassi since they're so affordable and delicious as well! read more

Quite simply, the best vegetarian restaurant in Milwaukee for the money. I've spent some time in India and my partner lived there for a year. This is probably the most authentic Southern Indian restaurant in the state. High quality, extremely tasty food at almost too-good-to-be-true price. Rude people.. they think they are doing a favor by running the restaurant. I can't understand why they show so much attitude. Went for 2nd time (and d last time of course!) And greeted rudely by d lady - believe she was a worker there. Ordered, after 20 min heard her saying something, went to d counter within 20 sec only to be told rudely in punjabi that I should be responsive else someone else will take my order! The quality of the food is really good. The price is right. The food is all vegetarian and I want to fill up on it because it is so fresh and delicious, but there is a point each time that I go, where the spiciness becomes too much. The pakora and samosas are so good. If you love bread, this place has the most delicious, homemade flat bread in many varieties. I think they are smart to make the food a little spicy because the homemade sweets put out the fire in your mouth. The food here is absolutely delicious -- I've never had anything that I didn't like. The decor isn't the best, but that's part of the charm. I suspect a lot of 20- and 30-something Milwaukee residents know about (and like) this restaurant, but forget about it because of the location, which is actually not far away from anything but is a bit off the beaten path for most Milwaukeeans. Everything is vegetarian, and the food has a nice kick. The serving sizes are perfect -- just enough to get cozy full (though I wouldn't mind having leftovers from this place!). This is our new favorite Indian place. You order at the counter; there is no table service. Food is served on Styrofoam, which isn't great. But once you get past that, it is awesome! I love the many vegetarian options. After dinner, we bought a box of Indian sweets to take home, and they were delightful also. This is definitely the cheapest place to get Indian food in Milwaukee... but the portions reflect that, I feel. I got some tasty vegetable korma today, but it was a very small amount of korma and then a lot of yogurt and rice. Definitely worth the $5, I just would've rather had twice as much korma and half the rice/yogurt. They don't have naan here, which was a little surprising as well.
