I concur with all of the great reviews Bombay Sweets has received here on Yelp. I had the halwa poori (no. 34, I believe?). Was surprised to find out that halwa is the Indian version of halvah, the amazing pan-Middle-eastern candy traditionally made from sesame tahini. Halwa is made of semolina instead of sesame. It was mildly sweet and reminded me of cream of wheat. The rest of the dish came with two poori (deep fried puffed whole wheat flat bread), a small helping of cholay I believe (chick peas with a sauce made from tumeric and garam marsala); a tomato type of curry (I should have asked what it was, but it was really good and complemented the other dishes); and raita (yoghurt sauce). The flavors were complicated; much different than restaurants I've been to outside of metropolitan areas that dumb down their dishes to appeal to the American taste. Eating at Bombay Sweets is a fun adventure. Also, repeating what has been written before, the food is really affordable. Three of us ate for not much than $20. They also have two or three deli cases full of cookies and snacks. Nothing is marked, so you need to ask. It inspired me to go home and do a little research before returning. The only reason why I didn't award 5 stars is that they serve food on styrofoam plates which is SO retro and horribly-eco-unfriendly. Maybe they could raise the price a smidgeon and invest in a dishwasher? Otherwise, looking forward to my next visit. Maybe I'll bring my own to-go ware. read more

I've been here several times, and it's a great spot for vegetarian Indian food, in Milwaukee. Their menu is extensive and the prices are reasonable. As far as the food goes, I'd give it 4 stars, it's pretty tasty.. however they do lose stars for customer service. They weren't very helpful with explaining the various Indian dishes that I was unfamiliar with, it takes a while to actually get your food, and sometimes they have a short, "hurry up and order" type attitude. I wish they were more welcoming, then I would definitely give this place higher stars. read more

Pure vegetarian Indian place ! Been here so many times after our grocery shopping ritual at the adjacent Indian store. Try their paratha platters. Great value for money. You get two stuffed parathas of any kind with chickpeas curry, yoghurt and pickle. Their sweets and savory display is good too. Lot of people do bulk orders for family parties or get-togethers . In street food style, try kachori chat ( it's a version of samosa without the potato filling) , pav bhaji ( pav is a type of Indian bun and bhaji is a mashed up spiced veggie curry). Totally unassuming and totally delicious. Come with a crew, order up front, and get some snacks while you wait. I recommend the spicy mix, but you might want to get two cups of water from the jug by the plasticware. If you require meat with your meal, this isn't the place for you. But if you can get over your carnivorous needs you won't be disappointed: the saag paneer was tasty, especially with their fried bread. The stuffed parotha wasn't my favorite, but still went well with my curried veggies. I also love that all meals come with a side of yoghurt... Perfect to cut the heat. I also recommend randomly pointing at the sometimes-labeled, sometimes-not sweets and trying whatever you get... It's a fun mouth adventure and you likely won't be disappointed. Also: it's cheap. I'm new to town and in the first week here Bombay Sweets was recommended by 3 different people. Naturally it was one of the first places I hit up being that I adore Indian food- I was not steered wrong. I ordered take out and the service was fast and nice. For my meal I ordered 4 samosas, since I was unsure of how big they would actually be- 4 was definitely overkill but since I only ate two I had leftovers for a lovely snack the next day. For my entree I ordered the Saag Paneer and it was awesome. Some of the best Saag Paneer I've ever had, it came with a generous portion of white rice. The prices were awesome- I paid just under $10 for the whole lot- the entree was only $4.99 and the samosa were 75 cents each. As a girl on a budget this place will definitely be on my high on my revisit often list. read more

The sweets are certainly delicious-ish, but I'll be honest I've had better at better prices. 6.99 for a pound of Laddu that wasn't that soft or sweet. It's been better at the local Indian grocer. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. I'm not what you'd call a "regular" but I've been in a few times. This was actually one of my first introductions to Milwaukee's Indian offerings, and it didn't disappoint. It's vegetarian, but that shouldn't turn off meat-eaters. Even before I began to reduce my meat intake, this place pleased. The food is really fantastic. Incredible, delicately spiced Indian food without pretense. They don't worry about pretense here--no inedible garnishes, and served on a paper plate. The interior is austere and has a cafeteria feel to it, but I can only assume that's because the focus is so clearly on the food. The menu has a ton of variety. I find myself struggling to come to a decision every time I'm in. There's not much I can say about this place that hasn't been said. This place is the bomb. The service is great and the staff is super helpful. The Samosa Chat is great to start with - the flavors are on point. The Dahi Poori was also very tasty. My favorite dish was the Channa Masala with Plain Parotha. As for the sweets, you can't go wrong. I don't remember the names of everything I've gotten but I think I've tried everything and there was nothing I didn't enjoy. I went into it not knowing a whole lot about Indian Food, mostly because there isn't a whole lot of exposure in the midwest to Indian food. This place is A-OK. It is cheap to be sure, and I think it is a great choice for groups, but for a solo diner I would say that when compared to Indian or Pakistani places nationwide it lacks in real ways. You walk in and are confronted with the sweets. There are a lot of options in the sweet and savory categories. Try something you have never tried. For the sweets I give this place 4 stars. The food is a good mix of fairly standard South Asian stuff for usually less than $8 and many things are only $4 or $5. This is why I would come here with about 8 people to get the full experience. Most of these items I have had as part of a mixed meal or a buffet so I felt restricted by the menu. Overall what I ordered was good - if uninspired. There is - I think - only one cook most of the time, and one friendly cashier. They do not have an oven for cooking Nan, so don't expect to see this on the menu. Boo. Overall, when I want this type of food I will go here, but overall, since I have had South Asian food on Chicago's famous Devon Avenue strip, I would say, this place is a "I need a fix" sort of place, rather than a "go to" place. Next door is a South Asian grocery store with a great collection. Visiting the grocery after the meal makes it a worthwhile trip. read more

Fantastic! I love Indian food and have spent the past year trying to find an acceptable spot here in Milwaukee. Bombay Sweets is it. Their sweets are wonderful, and their food has fantastic flavor. It's also incredibly affordable. Very, very affordable. I ordered the following: Aloo Tiki Chaat Saag Paneer Masala Dosa Raita Roti 2lbs of sweets (yes, they're THAT good) That's 3+ nights worth of food and my order totaled about $30 or so I originally didn't order so much, but as I started noticing some of my favorite things on the menu I added, and I am so glad I did! All of it is delicious, spicy, and everything I expect. The only thing that was not what I expected is the Raita. I'm used to it being cooling, but theirs has a spice to it. They also serve Roti, not Naan. I prefer naan, but hey, the meal was good enough for me to not care too much. I will absolutely be going back to this place. I WISH they were downtown...though I'd probably gain a ton of weight with all of the sweets I would then consume. Note that this feels more like a diner than a restaurant. It's not fancy or romantic feeling and you are welcomed by cases of sweets. So it doesn't look impressive, but the food makes up for it. I am so very happy that I found this place! It's a bit of a hike away from your standard downtown Milwaukee establishments, but definitely worth it for the times you're craving some authentic Indian food, and the cliche saag paneer and chicken tikka masala 'round the corner just won't do it. Indian food is not very well represented in Milwaukee, so imagine my surprise to find Bombay Sweets just a few houses off 13th and Morgan, an intersection I must have driven through hundreds of times over the years. The restaurant is more like an Indian deli than restaurant, in that everything's counter service and as many people take their food to go as eat inside. And while my unrefined eastern European tongue can barely recall what I ate (I believe dahi puri was part of it), it was plenty good, and for a menu which has several dozen different snacks, curries, and flatbreads, it was served to me in record time. Spiciness was not a factor for me, though the price was certainly nice, and it's great to know I have had a neighborhood Indian takeout joint in my neighborhood this whole time. read more

It's unfortunate that a food restaurant of many years slide back on the quality of their food . Recently we ordered samosa and some munchies to go and both were old stuff . The munchies were rancid and the samosa was retried in stale oils. That's what INDIAN restaurants do no quality consistency. I've been to Bombay Sweets for lunch and dinner multiple times. The atmosphere has improved remarkably over the years. The interior is very nice and usually clean. It is frequented by many Indian and Pakistani people. When you enter, you will see cases of Indian desserts. The prices are good, and the desserts are varied and excellent. You will notice that there is a dinner menu on the wall, with a lunch special at only about $7. You get a lot of food and some variety on the lunch special--really worthwhile. The entrees for dinner are more expensive than lunch, but still more affordable than most Indian restaurants. i think that's why people go here so often. For me, the real plus is that it is a truly vegetarian restaurant--with no meat--and has some vegan options. The cashiers are also cooks. They are friendly. I'm very happy with my experiences here. In reality, when I am going to eat great Indian food for less than $5 per dish, I could care less if the service is sophisticated and the dining room aesthetically pleasing. After reading several Yelp reviews of this random Indian hole in the wall, my husband and I tried it last night on the way out to a movie. The sign in front implied this was an Indian bakery and upon entering, we saw a large wall menu next to a bakery case filled with eight or ten types of Indian snacks, a mix of Indian chex-like mixes and small baked goods. I spent two weeks in India once and have never seen anything like this since my time there. The menu was extensive although it appeared to be completely vegetarian, which was fine with us. We ordered the special vegetarian platter with an extra roti, a curry dish that featured something like a garbanzo-bean meat-less ball and mango lassis. The food was most like the food I ate in regular places in India, not fancy or pretentious, just simply, extremely flavorful and just spicy enough for my tastes. I would highly recommend this place to those people that seek authentic ethnic food. Bring friends and share a variety of dishes. I can't wait to go back! read more

If you are looking for South Indian food, this is not the place to go. Had the dosa, which was mildly burnt, the sambar was unbelievably watery and the chutney was not up to the mark either. North Indian sweets and snacks were decent. Unless they make some radical changes, there is better food available elsewhere. read more

Bombay Sweets is great. It's also one of Milwaukee only all-vegetarian restaurants. As a vegan, this wouldn't mean much to me if Milwaukee was also completely devoid of all-vegan restaurants. Anyway, the food here is great, and incredibly reasonably priced. A number of the dishes are vegan, though they may be served with a side of yogurt/'cream. Keep that in mind if you're vegan (or don't like yogurt, I suppose). One thing I wish they'd do is label which menu items don't contain any dairy. Sometimes, it's obvious if they do or not, and sometimes you have to ask. Another thing I wish they didn't do was serve their food on styrofoam plates. Not only because it's definitely not very environmentally friendly, but it's just not a pleasant experience to eat food off of styrofoam. Some of what I've said may sound like complaints, but it's not -- the food is great, and it definitely stands out in a town like Milwaukee. Bombay Sweets is a short order / casual style restaurant similar to the Indian places found in San Francisco's "Tandoorloin" (Shalimar, Chutney, Naan N Curry, etc.) Except the food is even better and cheaper! This is by far the best food of this type I've found so far. The food is spicy. The samosas are to die for. The bread is good. It's a slice of India here in Milwaukee. It's a low frills sort of place. Order at the counter. Grab a copy of The Onion, and wait to be called up for your food. Stop in at the Indian Grocery store next door for some good deals on spices, prepared foods, etc. too. read more

Hooooorray for Milwaukee's first all vegetarian restaurant! There's a ton of vegan options and everything is really cheap (like $3-6). The only drawback is they serve everything on styrofoam so it's not very environmentally friendly, although I've heard they'll let you bring your own dishes to use. I LOVED their samosas while I was in college but I'm not too impressed with them anymore. For an appetizer, I prefer the bhel puri (mixture of rice crisps, wheat sticks, potatoes, random snacky items and spices), and what I believe is called the aloo tikki. It's #2 on the menu and it's fried balls of cauliflower, potato, and random deliciousness, accomponied by cilantro, tamarind, and coconut dipping sauces. I've found that these items are pretty popular, even w/ people that don't necessarily like Indian food. Some of the menu items are hit or miss but the food is so cheap that you can try a few things to see what you like. I think the lemon rice ($5) is exceedingly boring but would be a good side dish to some protein and veggies. My sister and I split some poori dish (deep fried bread that came w/ lentils, chickpeas, yogurt and the sweet orange Cream of Wheat and butter dessert you see at every Indian restaurant). My sister ate the two non-vegan items and I ate the rest, and while I was impressed w/ the poori bread itself, I found the lentils and the chickpeas to be very bland. This dish was $4.50. I tried the daily special, which came w/ lentils (boring), plain white rice (boring), curried cauliflower (deliciouos!), spinach (so-so), a tortilla, and yogurt and a dairy rice pudding (my sis and her husband ate these) for $5.95. We also got the uttappam (spelling?) lentil flour pancake with peas and onions for $5.50. The pancake itself wasn't anything to brag about, nor was the sambar soup it came with, but the seasoned potatoes that came on the side were out of this world delicious. This restaurant is awesome. The family that owns it always works the counter and they are extremely kind. The food is amazing and you almost feel as if you are getting one over on them for the amount they charge. It's cheaper than Mcdonald's for goodness sake! The Mango Lassi is like liquid heaven! The samosas are excellent and while I don't know the names of the Indian Sweets you can order from the counter rest assured each one is a little treasure.
