    Tiny Waiting Room

This review is specifically for the Bolt Bus service in Newark, Penn Station. Bolt is a joint venture between Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus lines, but is better than either for the routes it services. In Newark, NJ the Greyhound Station is also the Bolt Bus station, it is a tiny room to the left of the main entrance of Newark Penn Station (if facing the building). It is such an inexpensive service that I am willing to overlook the complete lack of organization around their process. I highly recommend that you sign up for an account online first and always purchase your tickets online, by becoming a member you will always have first pick in terms of entering the bus (as a member, the tickets will be listed as Group A, if available, which means you will board the bus first). Since there is no organization, everyone will crowd the door of the bus as if it is the last bus out of Newark before the Apocalypse so you will need to be aggressive and position yourself near the front or be ready to fight your way through the Group C ticket holders. Getting on first is important, you want to find the seats that have electric plugs that work, and even more important, seats NOT near the bathroom in the back. So what's up with Bolt from Newark? Not as crowded as New York (you might even be lucky enough to have the seat open next to you for your entire trip to DC). Unfortunately, NO Newark/DC BOLT service on Tuesdays or Wednesdays in either direction. The earlier you buy, the cheaper it will be, and you might luck out and get a $1 ticket. The buses are newer (for the most part) than the Greyhound and Peter Pan buses and are express (4 hours versus 5 or 6 hours one way on Greyhound). It is also much cheaper than Greyhound/Peter Pan. Typically, there are very few (sometimes none) counter service agents to help you so that is another reason to buy your ticket on line and bring a print out with you (although some bus drivers will accept viewing your ticket receipt on your smart phone as confirmation). The seats on the bus are basic and a little on the hard side. There are no tray tables at all and in some instances you might be an old bus that has no electric plugs at all so be prepared with a book just in case. They advertise free WiFi, but it is sporadic at best (at least to/from Newark/DC) so my radio and internet kept cutting in and out, but broken up internet is better than no internet, so I'll take it. The overhead bins are tiny so you will be putting your bag under the bus (even my back pack wouldn't fit in the overhead. Get there early (30 minutes or more), get yourself something to eat in Penn Station (or bring it from home) go outside about 15 minutes before the buses scheduled arrival time and play the "you're not getting ahead of me in line" game until the bus comes in. Listen closely for which group they letting on the bus and be ready to get on quickly (A loads first).,,,,,,,,,,,. The waiting room is dismal and depressing, but your are paying a discount price so I will give it a pass. If you can't afford to fly or to use Amtrak this is better than hoofing it to NYC to catch the bus. Last bus of the evening is around 6:00 PM and they seem to run about 4 buses a day to Newark (except, of course, on Tuesday and Wednesday). Ok in a pinch.

Straightforward getting on and coming off at the station, though late-night coming back they close some of the doors and you end up taking an elevator down with some of the heavier luggage. Food on the trains is limited - Acela had a train car that was some sandwiches, light snacks, and airport prices. It is nice to walk around, bathroom was pretty clean (and big in the car), the open door was a little noisy on the train trip back (regular not Acela), and the spacing for seats with a table was too crowded for leg space. Footsie is an understatement there. Get regular seats and just use the back of the seat unless you're a family of four.

Coach seating was much roomier than I thought it would be. You've got an adjustable foot ledge, a fold up table, and nearby electrical sockets. I didn't know what to expect from the cafe car. Amtrak offers a variety of menu items. I got a spicy chicken banh mi and a diet soda. I ate at one of the dining booths and looked out the window at the moving views. In D.C. the train switches from electricity to diesel, so for about 30 minutes the conductors turn off all the lights and everything - cafe cart, bathrooms, etc. are closed. You can step out of the car to stretch your legs, but most people in my car stayed inside. Also, there was an hour when the cafe was closed because that's when all Amtrak employees can take their break. I didn't have any checked baggage, so I put my carry-ons on the above head storage. Easy. Overall, the Amtrak ride was a good experience and I would do it again.

They look like they were built decades ago. The outside is grungy and the interior of the train was a bit shabby. For an airport train, they really don't design the interior to accommodate checked luggage. The seating space is so narrow that we had to squeeze our luggage in, then contort ourselves for the whole trip in order to fit so that our luggage wouldn't spill over into the aisle. Luckily we are just a family of 3, with a toddler so we could all pack into the seat. They also had a ticket collector come through the train to collect our tickets. I thought that was weird as I only saw that on old westerns where the conductor would collect tickets on the old the coal fired locomotives. Then, I realized it's probably a union job so that's why there's no innovation to verify the tickets via ticketing machine.

There were no clear instructions by the several workers in red jackets that you must transfer at terminal B to get to the train that would proceed to terminal A. Instead, we were told misleading and contradicting information by each different worker. This resulted in over an hour wasted. It would be far more useful if the overhead speaker in the train gave proper directions rather than the workers yelling sporadically. Although I arrived to the air train from the NJ Transit 2 hours in advance of my flight, I finally made it to security AFTER my flight takeoff time. If my flight wouldn't have been delayed, I wouldn't have made it. Do better.

They handled our pickup from LGA to our Midtown hotel and later our return trip back to the airport, and both rides were flawless. This was truly 5-star service and one part of the trip I didn't have to worry about at all. The vehicles were clean and comfortable, communication was clear, and everything ran exactly on time. It was worth every penny compared to mass transit or other ride services. What really set them apart was their customer service. When we were dropped off at the airport, my son accidentally left his phone in the car. Umar went out of his way to drive all the way back around and personally return the phone to us--no hesitation, no attitude, just genuine care and professionalism. I can't recommend Precision NY Chauffeur Service enough. If you want reliable, stress-free transportation in NYC, this is the company to use.
