New Jersey has a decent transit system for getting to and from New York but from place to place in NJ it is lacking unless you are on a train route. The express busses between Willowbrook Mall in NYC and Port Authority in NYC are amazing but can get overfull but better now with more late night busses back on holiday weekend Sunday nights. The train was very packed from Newark to MetroPark last Saturday which is not great given me and my wife are disabled but a mom kindly moved her kids to her lap so we could have seats. Some Northeast Corridor trains end right before MetroPark at Rahway and seemed fairly empty. Some trains are double decker like ours and some our single. The line was longer for the machines so we used a person who got us half off disabled rates. The app works as well if you know the zones or route, which we used next day for the bus to Port Authority. They just got over a short rail strike so that was very helpful to avoid but a pain for those who do not drive to have to pay a fortune for Amtrak to and from work. They also have light rail lines in Newark, Hudson/Bergen Cos., and from Camden to Trenton we have not tried. read more

Very very poor service in the North East corridor trains between NY Penn Station to Trenton and return. Late most of the days, it is so bad that people are moving closer to the city so they don't have to take this route. read more

I frequent the NJ Transit train, mostly via the Dover line to visit family in Nj. I think it's a pretty convenient way to travel there. I have never had an issue with delays or incorrect track numbers but sometimes it a nuisance that everyone hovers over the screen to see their track number than does a mad dash all at once. The train isn't the cleanest nor is it filthy. I'd say it's right in the middle. The price is decent and still beats the cost of driving over to NJ. read more

NJ Transit Bus Driver - ID #17187 I am submitting this review regarding a serious incident involving an NJ Transit bus driver, ID 17187, which occurred while I was attempting to board the bus. The driver was operating the vehicle in an extremely unsafe and unprofessional manner. As the bus approached my stop, the driver was speeding at an estimated 50 mph in a 35 mph zone and nearly passed the stop altogether. This created an unsafe situation not only for passengers waiting to board, but also for other motorists and pedestrians in the area. When I addressed the issue and asked why he was approaching the stop so fast, the driver immediately became rude and dismissive. He denied driving at an excessive speed despite the fact that it was very clear he was. His attitude was hostile, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable for someone operating public transportation. To document the incident, I took a photo of the driver's bus ID number, at which point he threw me off the bus without cause. This was retaliatory, unprofessional, and a violation of appropriate conduct toward passengers. read more

An incompetent and deceptive agency. They claim to operate a schedule, yet silently cancel trains without notification. Today, trains #3272 and #3871 were cancelled without a word, while NJ Transit's apps and boards continued to show them as active. Everyone had to eventually take #3873. A competent agency provides real-time cancellations so commuters can plan accordingly. Instead, NJ Transit allows hundreds of people to wait 30 minutes for trains they know will never arrive. On the biggest snow day in New Jersey years you called that 1-800 number and nobody's there to help you.Idon't know how they're still open for business . Here in Elizabeth New Jersey there's an elevator by the Broad Street side that's always broke it works for a few days and then it's broke for a month. The trains are always running a little late sometimes really late . They don't announce when they get to a train station where they're going to go in New York long Branch. Even when you get into your destination they don't say Rahway or South Amboy. In the winter the Waiting rooms with the heat on or close at night because of police are too lazy to do Patrols to chase out the homeless . So you're freezing yourself . Well, y review is based on a few trips into and out of NYC from Oradell, NJ. We had major problems with their app and them the machine in Oradell didn't work. This other customer was there and was having issues as well and said he would vouch for us! I was laughing. At the last minute, we finally got the app to work - I wonder what would have happened on the train...I almost can't believe the amount of craziness when trying to get the train from NYC back to Oradell. It's after 10:30 pm at night and tons of people are shoving their way in and the automatic doors to the escalators are trying to close and people won't let them so they finally shut off the escalator to slow the progression. There has to be a better way NJ transit. Not cool. I was hoping that no one would get pounced on. read more

We got here from EWR on the Air Train. Then from here it costs $15/person to get to Penn Station. So compared to JFK it is faster but more expensive to get into the city compared to taking A line from JFK. No place to put bags so you have to place them on seats or down on the cars with no seats where there is standing room. read more

Been taking NJ Transit to NY Penn for years. It is run awfully. Every train is late into the arrival station... like 100% of the time. You would think they would adjust the schedules. On a train right now out of NY Penn it left about 5 min late (not bad). Should be getting to my station now but we are only in Woodbridge. Another 30 min + to go. Will be ~35 min late minimum. I don't understand what they could possibly be doing to be so late. I mean the track is the track. There isn't traffic. You go whatever speed you are supposed to go and get there on time. Typically my trains arrive 10-15 minutes later than scheduled. Please adjust the travel times in the schedule so they reflect accurately when the train will be at each station. It is hard to plan with such a poorly run transit system. read more

Since I has some time to kill I had this great idea to take the train in from Newark. When I looked up how to take it there was this bus that took me to Newark Penn - see my review but it's not great! - which I could take into Manhattan. I exited Newark and tried to figure out where to catch this bus, hopped in the line and waited for a bit. When the bus arrived, I asked if I could use my phone to tap and the bus driver said no but not to worry about it and hop on. I was a bit skeptical but hopped on anyways. After a bit and all the passengers were on and seated, the bus left the terminal. It's not that long of a route but there are some sketchy people that hop on along the way. I met somebody on the bus who was from the area and really nice. We had a long chat and when we got to Newark Penn Station, he pointed me in the right direction to catch the train. I would put 1 star, but I cannot leave out some bus operators whove been great at their jobs. Tho in all, NJ Transit itself is a scam. I'm a native Philadelphian. So when I actually tell people that SEPTA is better and more professional than NJ Transit, that's saying ALOT. For one, the buses are ALWAYS late (in my experience only with one driver who was always on time). My morning bus driver is nice but she likes to skip her routes, and I quickly lost respect for her and her work ethic. She has skipped routes more than once-- she even passed me off to another route because she didn't feel like going into Philly. The destination on her bus said from "Salem to Philadelphia" and vice versa! What if people REALLY needed her bus to get home from Philly? Lady, that's an hour plus wait, PLUS you gotta hope whether the next bus will get there on time or even come at all. Once when going home I had to wait for an hour for the 401 bus to come. I almost lost a ticket because it's only active for an hour! I really learned from this experience! 2nd part of the scam is this dang NJ Transit app. The app literally deleted my round trip going back home. Folks, that's $6.15 I lost! Along with that scam, they will not refund round trip tickets, so they already stole $12.30 from me. The only reason I took NJ Transit because my car was in the shop, and the bus conveniently drops me off in front of my block at home and at the door to my workplace in the city. But having to deal with all of that drama at first try (yes, even experienced fights on the bus) was very challenging. I'm sure other comments will speak for themselves. read more

The cheapest commute to EWR airport form NY Manhattan would definitely be NJ Transit. It is important to give yourself at least 2 to 3 hours commute time to the airport. It cost about $15 to take the NJ Transit to EWR and 20 mins to get to the airport; However, it is not a reliable commute. So why do I say that? We showed up at NJ Transit at 2 pm and the next train would be 2:45 pm. We didn't board the train until 3:40 ish. The reason is because the next trains kept on cancelling. Basically if you are taking the train from Penn Station, you just have to watch the screen and get on the train that has the airplane icon. Almost 90% of the trains go to the airport or stop at the airport. The other reason why I was told that the next train is so far in advance of 2 pm was because the ones after it were all cancelled as well. The ride can be stressful, if you are in a time crunch and need to catch a plane. So please give yourself at least an extra 1.5 hours or 2 to get to the airport. I have heard stories that it can get so bad that delays and cancellation can be nonstop and be over 3 hours. I am not complaining but it is definitely something to keep in mind. I'm not from this state and we ended up on the wrong bus. The first bus driver was very nice and told us to get off and cross the street and get on the other bus going in the opposite direction. Our tickets expired and the driver on bus # 5425 going north east was very rude and said it was our fault basically. Ok we already know that sir but you could have been a little nicer about it. Plus the lady at Penn station was the one who told us to cross the street in the first place. He got smart with us but yet he let the other people come on the bus through the back door and didn't say anything to them. At least we were trying to be honest. read more

Gonna keep this short for the people visiting New Jersey: Nj transit is expensive, unreliable, dirty and outright horrendous. The buses are never on time and the bus drivers are very inconsistent on the fares, not to mention NJ transit decided to increase fair for some reason. On the way back from a concert the bus stopped, not even at the bus stop. Then, the driver proceeded to yell at everyone in spanish, which many did not understand. As someone finally translated, we could finally get on the bus. After that, the bus driver started screaming at everyone calling them selfish and rude. Then, he didn't even let the bus fill up. Mind you, this is after a sold out concert at MetLife where people NEED the bus. Most cannot afford a $80 uber ride. He didn't even let anyone get on the bus to stand. He continued screaming and shut the doors on probably over 50 people in need of a ride back. Terrible terrible service and this is not the first time. Every worker is grouchy, unhelpful, and upset at all times. read more
