I was whisked away back in time to the late 70's when I was a little girl and used to go to the Boll Weevil with my family. The little Boll Weevil on Second Street (closed down now) was smaller but certainly had its charm. If my dad were alive today he would have loved this Boll Weevil in Lakeside. It's big, Western in decor, has plenty of games, digital jukebox and pool tables to keep yourself occupied, plus 5 big screen TV's to watch various sports. This location is like the Disneyland of all Boll Weevils. And I squealed with delight when I saw the same familiar red and white barn type style on the outside of the building. My significant other and I had a two for one coupon out of the Pennysaver. When we stepped inside the building, we didn't know whether to sit ourselves down or wait to be seated. It's pretty informal so we sat down in a booth. Minutes later a friendly server with a big smile came to greet us with a tray of condiments for our burgers and her name was Bridget. Our fries came out piping hot and so delicious that we couldn't stop gobbling them up! The burgers were to die for! I had a regular 1/2 pound steer burger and my significant other had a mushroom and swiss 1/2 pound steer burger. I got the raspberry ice tea to drink and wasn't too crazy about it and let Bridget know this and she swapped it out for regular ice tea. Burton got a pint of beer (amber lager). We loved every bite of our food and was checking out the neat decor of the place, looked exactly like the pictures I had seen online while searching for a good burger place to go. After we ate it was time for a game of pool and boy was it fun! One dollar to play per game and we made it last considering my significant other was out of practice and I'm a novice. We both would love to come here at least once a month for delicious burgers and to play pool. Maybe in the future we will get so good at playing pool we will be like pool sharks lol. This place was closed and spectacularly re-opened in October. A buddy and I decided to eat, and grab a beer here since Eastbound Grill was packed. I had been curious of this place since they reopened. We drove into the back parking area and notice the rat traps. Its only had four! "Wow! This is promising!" I thought. (You see in Lakeside, as a general rule of thumb, you don't want to eat at any place that is more than a seven rat trap establishment.) We went in. Place looked exactly the same. Ordered our food and beer. Shortly after, she came out with our pitcher of beer. I poured the glasses, and noticed that there was no carbonation, no head on this beer, nothin'. I looked down into the pitcher and said, "Did she just give us apple juice?" We asked for a new pitcher of something else. It was the same... My buddy said, "They probably haven't changed the kegs since they closed last time." We ordered bottles instead. Burger was nothing amazing. Okay I guess. It's one of those places were you put on your own condiments. Since the food is a bit pricey, you really just want to go there for the scenery. You see Bollweevil's in Lakeside is a lot like a Chuck E Cheese, but full of Tweekers. I mean,...where else can you watch a kid that is missing half his head, throw up on a complete stranger, and then run around a restaurant with a fork in hand, while laughing uncontrollably? I can't comment on the food because we weren't served anything and couldn't get the waitress to take our order so this review is strictly about the service. My boyfriend and I went on the weekend a while back, during the day. We noticed it while we were out driving around and since we were both a bit hungry, a nice juicy burger sounded like it would hit the spot. We weren't even sure they were open until we saw a group of people coming out. There was a parking space right up front so we went in and seated ourselves. The place was almost completely dead. It's a very large space and the 3 other tables were really spread out, so we got one whole section all to ourselves. The waitress (a brunette in her late 30s, early 40s) came over and handed us menus and left quickly. She didn't bring us a glass of water or even ask if we'd like anything to drink. It was a really warm day that day so we were pretty thirsty but no biggie, we figured with an empty restaurant she had plenty of time to grab a couple of waters and bring them back over to us. No water. Ever. We sat there with our mouths turning to cotton and our menus lying flat on the table, waiting for service. The waitress leaned on the bar and chatted with the cook and watched tv. She was waiting for somebody's order so instead of bringing the NEW customers a glass of goddamned water on a hot day, she leaned her lazy ass on the bar and watched tv while waiting for the cook to complete another table's food. We were there for almost 20 minutes and never once got a glass of water or had our order taken. No one even approached our table. At this point we were parched and getting really pissed off so we watched as she did absolutely nothing useful whatsoever, until the cook put a couple dishes on the bar. At that point she woke up out of her nap state and carried the dishes to a table that was waiting. She still never came to take our order or ask if we wanted anything to drink. The only way we were going to get something to drink is if we got up and went to the bar to get it ourselves or went back out to my Jeep to drink out of the water bottle I had been sipping on, which was lukewarm. The other option, of course, was to leave and go somewhere else- which we did. We went to Sizzler in El Cajon and got tall icy glasses of water and big fat juicy delicious burgers exactly the way we ordered them. Thanks for nothing, Boll Weevil. read more

It's been 10-15 years since I've been to this place. The burgers are just as good now as they've ever been. I only ordered a 1/4lb but my burger was so good I ended up wishing I had gotten the 1/2lb. The servers were all really amazing, nice women. And on the night I went they were obviously busy with a pretty big little league team. The service was pretty slow (hence only 4stars). I do have to say though; parents of little leaguers are horrible. They let their kids run wild and disrespect the staff. I really have to commend the servers for keeping their cool and not throwing the whole group out. The kids were really that bad. Some of the kids took pickles off our table and started eating them. Others were trying to play pool, but really had no respect for the equipment and were stepping on chalk and swinging sticks around in the air. Balls were rolling all over the place. All the servers were very polite, but would ask the kids to please calm down and be careful, please don't do that, etc. Although this place looked like it was great for kids (arcade games and a party room), parents should still make sure their kids are mature enough to go out in public. The chicken Cesar salad was drowning in salad dressing. We spend $80 for 4 mediocre meals that should have cost $40 total. The emptiness of the restaurant should have been our second clue not to eat there (first being the weird smell.) I love this restaurant! I've been going to the la mesa location for 5 years and just found out this place was open last year! We thought it was closed down. Lucky for us its up & running. The food is your classic boll weevil recipes. Very tasty! I love the a1 burger (green chilis sour cream pepperjack and of course a1). My bf loves the avocado burger. Its a great place to relax and hang out. Theyve got tvs pool tables and a jukebox. My only complaint is the beer selection. No local beers and maybe only 2 crafts on draft. I know they could be making more money if they invested in a new bar. I know they'd be making more money off me! A great hang out for us in our late 20s who feel a little too old for some other burger joints in town. A perfect fit, definitely try it out! read more

Hubby was craving a good burger and a fast food burger wasn't going to cut it, so seeing Boll Weevil is just up the road from us we figured what the hell. I ordered the chicken Cesar salad the hubs got a triple bacon cheeseburger and our daughter got onion rings and a kids pizza. My salad was delish loved the seasoning on the chicken and the lettuce had a good fresh crunch, hubs about inhaled his burger, but our daughter didn't like the pizza :( now daddy and daughter are having a game of pool before dessert. The only think that i didn't like about the place was the cleanliness, like one of the other reviews said the place needs a major deep cleaning, get inbetween the cushions every once in a while. read more

Go there about once a month and usually excellent. But went today and got a meal and used the 1000 island tasting sauce for my burger. There where 4 of us and I'm the only one who used it. Been in the bathroom all afternoon and still am going ever 15 minutes with stomach cramps and explosive diarrhea and nausea. I'm surprised by all the good reviews about this place. The food is decent and the service is horrible. We ordered some cheese squares and buffalo wings to start and 3 of us ordered shakes. We had a group of 7 and the table was kind of small for us so it was pretty cluttered. When we were done with the starters, no one came to clear our table and, after about a half hour, I literally cleared the table myself, took all of the empties and put them on another table. Then came the astronomically unreasonable long wait for our burgers and salads. When we did finally get our food we got no silverware and when we asked the waitress for some, she brought back plastic forks and said that was all she could find. Was the dishwasher off for the night?? When we finally got our check, which was also a long wait, we went up to the front to pay the bill and the lady, who was very nice, asked us how everything was. I looked at her and said "really?" Then the lady went on about how she knows their service is slow but how was everything else. My girlfriend, who is way nicer than I am, gave me the "don't do it look" and I ended up just saying "fine." I would not recommend this place to anyone and I wouldn't visit again. I didn't give it 1 star because although the service stunk, they were nice, and my strawberry shake was good. read more

I love their food and the people who work there. My favorite is the mushroom burger and fries zucchini sticks...BUT there is a consistent problem that I really want them to fix. It's their phone. I frequently want to place orders for pick up. But they have issues with their phone. This issue has frequently wasted my time. I've advised the staff of this problem before and have been told there is an ongoing phone problem. Is this true or is the help really just making the problem happen because they always seem to be over worked? It's either a busy signal, a pick up and hang up or an answer where no one comeS back to the phone (they advised on that occasion that they did come back to the phone and couldn't hear anyone say anything. All I heard was back ground noise for almost 8 minutes). I want the owner to address this problem! read more

We did a phone in order on all days Superbowl Sunday. The food was pretty ok. Not spectacular, and definitely not bad, but just ok. I got chili cheese fries... it has been a long while since I had chili fries from this place. They were pretty good - they use nacho cheese sauce and that combined with the chili gave an ok amount of spice. The size of the to-go cheese fries was sadly way too small for what they are charging. I ordered a 1/4 lb. burger only to discover when I got home that they had given me and charged me for 1/2 lb. Shouldn't have eaten the whole thing haha! My girl was pretty happy with what she got... the shake/sundae is average but I can make better myself at home. Maybe the dine-in service will put it over the edge. Bottom line, for the price you can definitely do better. But if it's Superbowl Sunday, or you live next door, or you're in a pinch, it'll do. read more
