Frank Sinatra's famous mugshot photo behind our table.

We're back in town after being away for 12 years. Bob's Classic on Wenatchee Ave was one of our favorite social spots in the evening and favorite breakfast spots in the mornings. I still miss the huge full cross-cut slice of ham with eggs and hash browns. Bob's has been here at least 25 years (that I remember), still known for it's bar room cocktails and wines. Tonight (day after Christmas) we had a small gathering of family--nine of us. The dinner menu covers everything from bar snacks to sandwiches to salads to steaks--something for everyone. The restaurant section is separated from the bar and lounge area, albeit they're only steps away from each other. In the bar, the TV is covering sports; in the restaurant photos of classic celebrities cover the walls. I ate my Cobb Salad while a young Frank Sinatra watched from his famous jailhouse mugshot (see pic). Food portions have always been enough to satisfy, and the selections are all the time-honored entrées you'll find in a small town café. I think of Bob's as the classic "4-Star liquor bar". Everything about Bob's is "above average".

I ordered a house salad with GRILLED chicken, to have a boiled chicken breast that was old and slightly seared on a pan. This is beyond disgusting and disappointing that a restaurant would just boil chicken instead of actually grilling it. I had to put it to the side. I didn't bother with even telling the server because she didn't seem to have given us much attention despite the place being empty. Photo added of the boiled chicken.

In town for Union business/ officer's training for 5 nights. 4 guys in my group. We ate here Sunday night for dinner when we arrived... We came back Monday morning for breakfast...... And Dinner again Monday night. Seriously good food I can try my best to remember everything ordered: Sunday night - I had the Club house sandwich. OMG tasty... B- had the prime rib, raved about it. J- had a hamburger and loved it. But he loved the sweet potato fries even more. And I can't remember what D- had for dinner but he ordered the deep fried pickle Spears and we all LOVED THEM. Monday morning- I had Another Clubhouse sandwich.....it was soooooo good. J- had eggs benedict and said it was amazing. B- steak and eggs and said it was almost as good as the prime rib.... D- had a regular breakfast with a massive hit cake. He couldn't finish it all and said it was really good. Monday night = 1/2 off all Burgers. I'm not going to talk about anyone's dinner but mine...... It was THE best hamburger I have ever had...... I ordered a Swiss mushroom with Blu cheese chunks. Waitress came back out about 2 minutes after placing the order and asked me, "Do you want the Blu cheese on top or cooked in?" I said "I don't care, I just love Blu cheese" When my burger came it was HUGE. It was the best tasting..... Every last nite was amazing....... Well it's breakfast time... On day four..... I'm going to get me a 3rd clubhouse sandwich. And I suspect I will return for dinner again tonight for another Swiss mushroom Blu cheese burger. Drooling........

Sadly, many of them have moved on. But some still remain, and encountering them again is exhilarating. I always look forward to the hugs and squealing laughter.--"...where did you go and what have you done...? We've missed you!" McGlinn's Alehouse is the place we spent most of our time for the first five years of our marriage. It was originally the Orondo Tavern, built in 1922 as a solid brick two-story commercial building in the small town rural American style--big, open storefront windows on the ground floor, and small offices and apartments on the second, with tiny windows surrounded in iron bar planters. Such buildings have long narrow internal staircases up the right side entrance--one you'd never access unless to lived in one of those vaults upstairs. I finally returned to McGlinn's tonight. I had been meaning to, long before this, but there was never any parking in front --many restaurants now have covered sidewalk-cabanas out front--a code violation waved during the COVID pandemic. Inside, the left wall is still that half-block-long cabinet of all the liquor bottles you can imagine, multiplied in depth by the mirrors behind them. Down the middle of the room is one long continuous table that seats 14 people on a side--yes, strangers sit together. At the very back wall there is still, the largest brick open-hearth wood-burning oven you'd ever bake a leg of lamb and two pizzas in, at the same time. And down the right side-wall were six wooden tables-of-four, all sealed in a hard resin clear coat, as shiny and clean as they were vintage and rustic. I sat in the first chair at the first table, my back to the stairway down to bathrooms in the basement below the sidewalk. I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich with Tim's chips, a departure from the "John Paul Bacon Burger with pickled onions (McGlinn's is famous for). Ask to sit in Sadie's section--she's been there 20 years. McGlinn's has been there 34 years! What's not to like about an old friend! -------== ##### ==-------

When she brought out the dish, there were two large ones on it because they're normally larger (!) and she wanted us to have the equivalent. It was hot and delicious and between the three of us, we polished off 2/3 of it right away. I ordered the veggie pesto hash. Soooo yummy. I ordered mine without zucchini because it's just not a breakfast veggie to me lol. I did not notice or taste any pesto in the dish but the hollandaise was excellent on top. I tried their gravy to determine what bread I wanted (biscuit was an option) and it was so good. I'm such a gravy snob and this was quite flavorful with a creamy texture. I could barely finish my hash so I didn't touch the biscuit and gravy but our daughter will have it for leftovers this week. Randy ordered the pig and vine bene with hash browns. The bacon on his was crumbles instead of actual pieces of bacon so that was disappointing and he said the hash browns were cooked inconsistently with some of it being overcooked and all of it lacking flavor. Corina ordered the three meat hash and liked it a lot. She could only eat half - the portions are large - so more leftovers for her. This is a super cute place with indoor seating and what looked like a covered patio dining area. We will definitely be back.

It's Burger King on steroids! You won't find tomatoes on the menu board, but almost every other combination of garnish (and companion meats) are options. I went with their stated classic, the "OG Mission" ('original gangster') burger. It is delicious, albeit noticeably greasy, due to the extra-high fat content of the ground beef. But that's where the rich flavor comes from. What Mission Burgers is doing right is highly seasoning the meat with salt and pepper, then punching up the flavor with pickles, red onion, and their special sauce. Add to that the richness of the cheese and the crusty, grilled bun--this is the winning combination at the base of all their other burger options. The other thing I really appreciate is, their straightforward pricing without trying to upsell their ingredients. The add-ons are inexpensive--slice of cheddar is $.50 compared to EZ's $1.47 for the same. Two suggestions: - drain the grease off the patties before assembly, - don't fold the wrapper in half... wrap the burger in a full sheet, stronger paper if necessary, keep it from leaking all over clothing. (I'll be back to check! :-) Otherwise, this is a 5-Star burger! (see the menu board pic attached for all the other options, including chicken)
