First time here this January 2022! One of my best friends took me here. We share a love for diners and delis. So this spot was perfect. The vibe is retro and love the classic booth seating style. Of course we ordered a ton of food. Burgers, grilled cheese, and fries... oh my! The burger was juicy and the bacon on my grilled cheese was yum! We even shared a strawberry oreo shake. I am pretty sure the caloric intake was equal to what I should have had in a week. But... Totally worth it! In my defense, we didn't eat all of it! The service was good. The parking was easy. The cool thing is the drive over we passed by the golf land from Karate Kid. That made my night. The only downside which is why I am giving this a 4-star review is the restroom. Went to Bob's a few weeks ago and was disappointed in few things. A few of the menu items are gone and when ordering a side of chili cheese fries the order was so small. Also they have started automatically charging a credit card fee so be aware. We decided to pay in cash to avoid the fee and I could tell our server got upset, stating that she would have to go find change from her own pocket. That is not our fault or our problem and even then she still didn't remove the c/c fee we had to tell her again! I use to love coming to Bob's but now I don't think Ill be returning. read more

After all these years I finally made it to Bob's. What a cool place. Vintage vibes and occasional car shows. Walked right in on a Sunday morning. Clean restaurant in and out. Plenty of parking. Started off with coffee and a couple milk shakes. Their Oreo shake is a must try. So good. I devoured my steak and eggs. The steak was small but well seasoned and perfectly cooked. I had steak and Chilaquiles they were so delicious and I also asked for a Masapan milkshake it was so yummy you have to try try it yourself ... all in all the food was exquisite and very delicious. The service was beyond amazing. The location was from head to toe spotless ..the staff welcomes you with a smile and are friendly and attentive to your needs, and they also have a mini shop on display where you could buy souvenirs ..t's a very happy place where you could spend with your friends and family I strongly recommend that you go. I've came to this location years ago and wanted to visit again so we came and decided to go through the drive thru. There were other cars in line so we waited a bit. Once we got to the speaker, the guy taking our order was very polite and friendly. When the car in front of us got their food and the window closed, we pulled up and waited. Then waited and waited. No one came to window. No one checked in, no one took my payment, no one even acknowledged us. I waited 10 minutes and decided to drive away. Service was okay, but the food was not great. I have to say I loved my shake but the meatloaf had a funny taste to it. I would have ordered something else but they did not come back to check on me after serving my meal so I paid for it and took it home to my partner. He did not like it either so we threw it away. Really charming place with the Bob's specialties we've known all our lives. Really well made food; I had a small concern about my meal that turned out to be no problem at all, but the staff was very generous even though there wasn't an issue. The setting is really quaint an evokes the feeling of the old-fashioned roadside diners which have mostly disappeared. We were especially happy when we found out the history of Bob's stepping in with the city of Downey to preserve the building after a car dealership illegally started tearing it down. The hostess and waitress were very nice and friendly. What I wasn't happy with was the food. The burgers patties weren't as pictured. The fried chicken tenders were either dipped for a second time to warm back up or the oil in the fryer is old because the tenders were dark and burnt tasting. 10/8/2024 7:28 pm came to bobs after witnessing the car crash on social media that took half of bobs head off . Sat in an almost empty restaurant ordered 3 classic Bob burgers with fries and drinks my wife freshly out of the navy was happy to go to bobs and I with my father in law were happy to get out of the house. As we sat and waited we were watching a manager cough into her hand in and around food prep areas it went on for 10-12 minutes finally I asked to speak with her and her response was I am sick and I had to work the owner makes me work sick . I told her I get it your short staffed but that's no excuse to be by the food prep areas I also noticed she did not wash her hands . Forwarding this to the health department as she claimed she might have bronchitis or pneumonia and has been sick for a month . Hope someone contacts me soon . read more

My Husband and I are Gen Xers and have been looking for food that reminds us of our youth, burgers and fries that are not fast food yuck. We have driven by here a few times and said, "lets give it a try". I had a Southwest Burger and he decided he wanted Breakfast for lunch. He ordered steak and eggs and a waffle top with fresh Strawberries. After being disappointed by too many cafes and diners we had low expectations. When the food arrived we are happy it looked good and not sad like so many other places. So we cautiously took the first bite. Oh My! That first bite of my burger took me back 20 years. It was so good. Flavorful and perfectly seasoned. My hubs waffle was fluffy and the outside was golden brown yet not over done. The Strawberries were fresh and it made the waffle delicious. I've been eating at Bob's all around So. Cal for almost 70 years. We've been eating at this one since it was converted. The service is always outstanding and the food has always been very good until our last visit a couple of days ago. The burger patties were so tiny. I had to open the buns to seen them. And they were overcooked to a crisp. Actually had to chew a little like jerky. It was so disappointing. Had the hot cake for desert and it was great as usual. One of my all time favorite places to eat! I always get the Chili Spaghetti, with a side of garlic bread, side salad with a Chocolate shake and they make the shakes the old fashioned way! Now let me tell you about the service, Jose is outstanding he always remembers my sons and my order and goes above and beyond! Every time I go in I always ask for him to help us, he always has a smile on his face! I'm on board with the average rating, which is 4 stars. I was in the area, specifically in Santa Fe Springs, and thought that if I didn't visit this Bob's for lunch right then, I didn't know when it was going to happen. This was my first time here. I had only recently learned there was one in Downey. At this juncture, only 4 Bob's Big Boy restaurants remain in the Golden State and that saddens me. There is the original one in Burbank, the Northridge location, the Downey location (this one), and a Norco location. With this visit, I have been to the first three. A visit to Norco is, therefore, on the bucket list, if possible, for a future visit to the Southland. This Bob's was not a Bob's Big Boy from its inception. It was "(Name of someone) Broiler" and, in 2009, was converted into a Bob's Big Boy. That said, its layout isn't the boilerplate '70s layout that was the most common in all of California. Here, the restaurant is bigger, with different seating areas - sort of like multiple choice - that you will see upon entering. I thought about it and chose a seating area to the left, thus not the one by the windows and near the counter. There were big windows at the rear of this seating area and plenty of light to read, eat, and just function better. It almost goes without saying that I would be having the Bob's Big Boy classic burger combination. Things have changed a little bit from the presentation when the chain was newer and its stores were ubiquitous. The combo is no longer automatically 3 items - burger, fries, and salad. However, the salad is but a minor upcharge. And, while the salad no longer sits in a small triangular bowl on the main combo plate, it is now a bigger separate salad and even has shredded cheese on it. The burger, double decker and with cheese, was ordered medium well and it was neatly stacked. The fries at Bob's are reliable. My soft drink was refilled while I ate. The service was very good. It was amicable, questions were answered, and everything was brought out promptly. Knowing that there would be a trek to the desert after leaving, my soft drink was replenished for that to-go situation. And, of course, it's their job to ask you if want dessert. After their filling combo, with bleu cheese on the salad and some into which I dipped my fries, you just laugh at that question and they know what that means. The pricing was very much in line with the quantity, quality, and genre of the food. I left the restaurant and took in its time stamped paraphernalia from outside. I also laughed at two things. The first was that I'd never been in Downey or most of the Gateway Cities before, other than passing by them on some freeway. I didn't reflexively know how to get back onto the freeway. Had this been the SFV, that wouldn't have happened. I have that one under control! The other thing was seeing a bus - a Metro L.A. #115 - plying Firestone Blvd. and, on its digital display, indicating "Playa del Rey." To me, this was just insane. Before L.A.'s RTD bus system got rebranded as Metro, buses didn't have these long and crazy treks and there were jurisdictional restrictions as to where they could and couldn't go. You wouldn't have seen a bus going all the way to Sylmar - at the extreme north end of Los Angeles - through the pass and from the newer Expo/Sepulveda station. So, seeing a bus that went all the way to Playa del Rey from here was equally eye opening. What route does it take? Will it pick up any surfers en route? (I doubt it.) And, having also seen this #115 around PDR, this was no mirage. The bottom line is that, if you live within a reasonable distance, you can take the #115 here if you don't have wheels at your disposal, with a stop right out front. Lastly, if you do drive, the parking areas, both in front of and behind the restaurant, are capacious. I'm glad I decided to have lunch at this Bob's Big Boy in Downey. It made for an all around "feel good" nostalgic experience. read more

Well this was not a good experience for me last night 3/30/25. My daughters pass by to buy 4 hamburger meals to go. When they hit home my one of my daughters says she doesn't like the taste of hers and looks at her patty's snd says it looks like it was boiled in water. I looked at mine and laughed and said it's fine I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the hamburgers. this was around 9 pm. Around 10:14 i start f nauseous and sis did my daughte. I felt the food was sitting on top of my stomach and I was getting bloated really bad. got pains in my stomach. I went lay down see if went away beca I have to to work the next day, I felt I needed to vomit. I go to get a trash bag and I barely made it to the bathroom and threw up on the floor and tub. I have had serious diarrhea and stomach pains. I couldn't go to work. I missed a days work and I am so exhausted of not being able to sleep since bec of the pain and diarrhe. I celebrated my 70th birthday by coming to one of my childhood eateries... back in the 60's we would go to Bob's Big Boy and eat the double decker... of course my eyes were always bigger than my stomach, but my dad saved the day and ate my half eaten burger... loved the combo that included salad... even as a kid, I loved eating the salad with bleu cheese dressing... and even though I don't eat bleu cheese anymore because ranch was a replacement... I had to order it for old times sake.... the cool thing was this one in Downey was still here and the city helped restore this Googie style building... and boy, this place looks so good... I appreciate the city of Downey recognizing the importance of these iconic buildings being lost to put up a bank or an Amazon Fresh... and instead assisting the owner of Bob's to restore and bring back these buildings that evoke that good old time feel... not only that but the Big Boy combo still tasted the same! They even have malts... so I had to get a chocolate malt... anyways, I came with some other Bob's Big Boy lovers who also had wonderful childhood memories growing up... and even though I've never been to this one, it gave me chills to be able to hug my best friend with the same name as mine... thank you city of Downey, Bob's Big Boy, and all the servers and cooks that made our dining experience so enjoyable! read more
