$12 plus city of Chicago tax for a "Parma" sammie is a bit steep. Add on a drink and cup of soup and your looking at close to twenty for a week day lunch. Boar's Head is probably the best processed deli meat out there but I can't justify what they are charging. Plus, my friend had the their ham and cheese melt and it was pretty lame and barely warm. There are better sandwich places in the loop IMHO but hey I'm sure some folks will swear by this place. Workers were nice though so three stars for them. read more

Which I suppose is a weird thing to be a huge fan of but if you've had them you know the difference between that and gross regular deli meats. I can't eat those prepackaged ones anymore. I recently started a new job in the area and couldn't believe there was a Boar's Head Deli in the area. It's the first in the country! Don't we feel special? I had the turkey sandwich with brie and green apples. Very very very good! They were out of the multigrain bread it usually comes up but offered sourdough or rye. I would've changed the bread to rye anyway. Can't wait to try more of the sandwiches. Everything tastes fresh and natural. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I recommend trying it, here's why: First, I'm only giving 4 stars because I have been to gourmet sandwich shops which can't be compared to. Boar's Head is known for having "better quality" sliced meats. Let's face it, processed meats are pretty gross with a lot of bad crap, so anything better quality is good in my book. This is not a gourmet sandwich shop, but they make decent sandwiches. Every has their go-to food, and for sandwiches mine is a Reuben or Corned Beef. Arguably one of the worst breakfast sandwiches I have ever attempted to eat. The "egg" is a mess of slime better suited for the bottom of a McD's dumpster. Not even removing the egg makes the sandwich edible because of the egg slime that permeates through the remaining ingredients. Oh and the smell...I'll stop. Horrible experience. Zero stars. I come weekly for a half pound of turkey which they slice thinly upon my request and quickly without having to wait in a long cold cut line like I typically have to do at a grocery store. I am a Boar's Head deli meat die hard, which is saying something as this brand of meat mysteriously disappeared from one of the supermarkets I frequent (disappointing!) It is great knowing that Boar's Head Cafe is there to sate my craving for a fresh carved deli sandwich. Yesterday was my first visit here; I took advantage of the 1/2 soup+ 1/2 sandwich combo. The soup offerings were skewed to the meat-based (the only vegetarian option was split pea). I went with a minestrone-like option, which had bits of meat. It was ok, the ingredients were fresh, but next time I will probably stick with just the sandwich. The half sandwich selections are kind of limited and I settled on the buffalo chicken on sourdough. The bread was fresh and the ingredients were all quality. I ate in as I didn't want the soup to get stone cold by the time I arrived at my destination. The little bag that they gave me with my order was a nice touch and the seating was plentiful so I didn't have to scramble for a place to park myself (yes, I was that uncool kid in the high school cafeteria). I will probably be back here to try a hot sandwich or panini but might give it some time before I go for a breakfast item. read more

The only people sitting in their dining area was staff taking their lunch break. I cant complain about the service. The staff provided exceptional service and courtesy(They almost seemed excited to see someone walk in). Processed meat is processed meat, no matter how you slice it. The cost is too excessive. I was really craving a mozzarella sandwich and thought, "Perfect!", when I saw that Boar's Head has the Parma sandwich which includes "Prosciutto di Parma, Fresh Mozzarella, Baby Arugula, Roasted Tomatoes, Organic Olive Oil, and Aged Balsamic Vinegar on a Crusty Italian Baguette". I'm a meat-eater but this particular day (today), I just wasn't feeling it. Prosciutto can sometimes be too salty. I'm not about that bloated life. I step up to the counter and order the Parma without prosciutto and the sweet waitress says, "Let me check on that because of the pricing." Fine. She returns and says, "Yes, they can do the Parma without the Parma." Great! As my sandwich moves down the assembly line of at least 5 people, each person looks at the one before them with such utter confusion when they say, "Parma without the Parma". I also seemed to grow three heads at this point. Once my sandwich made it to the ingredients section, they asked me what I wanted it on it. What? Why didn't they just build my sandwich as it's listed on the menu? I wasn't aware this was a glorified Subway. At this point, I was kind of dazed and quickly chose some roasted mushrooms and arugula. Once they started wrapping up my sandwich, I realized I forgot to mention I wanted the Roasted Tomatoes which are supposed to be included. Too late to say anything...they put the sticker on the wrapping. Didn't want to further disrupt their day. If I had known what I know now, I would have A.) Ordered the sandwich online as I normally do to avoid things like this, B.) Just ordered the darn Parm with Parm, or C.) Just gone to Goodwin's where the wait can be a little bit long but the sandwiches are always on point. How was the sandwich. Meh. Eataly has a great mozzarella panino which I would get in a heartbeat. It's just a long walk. Will I return to Boar's Head Cafe? Maybe...probably not?
