The sandwiches are good too, it's all of Boars Head's deli meat options and they've crafted some pretty clever sandwiches as well as some absolute classics. Appreciate that all the sandwiches come with a small side (pasta salad is the go-to). Warm sandwiches are the better option, more unique and more worthwhile. The line can get a bit long but I've found it moves pretty quickly and it's certainly worth the wait. read more

Perfect lunch spot in the loop. I finally made it to Boar's Head Cafe after walking by it countless times. It wasn't very crowded, so I walked right up to the counter. The young lady who greeted me was pleasant. The location is bright and felt very cozy. I ordered the chicken noodle soup and the chicken cobb salad. I didn't realize the salad was premade, but it was fresh and probably made fresh the same day. The chicken noodle soup was just okay. It was mostly broth with maybe a large spoonful of noodles and chicken. For $4.99, I wouldn't order it again. It felt like a bit of a rip-off, and it honestly wasn't very good. The salad was pretty good, though. I saved it for dinner, and the lettuce held up. I tossed the avocado because I don't eat avocados, but everything else was fresh and delicious. I had the balsamic vinaigrette dressing, which tasted like any vinaigrette dressing you'd find at the grocery store. I grew up in Queens, NY and worked in deli's growing up. In NYC and Long Island people will refuse cold cuts that aren't boars head in my experience. They originally from Brooklyn, NY. I mean they're consistent good quality and they have premium products. Usually prosciutto and certain cheese I prefer imported. So we received a large order from my office. A little embarrassed to have just discovered this cafe. I have been taking the longest drive to the southern suburbs to get my favorite hummus. I had no idea I could grab it from this cafe which is waaay closer. I tried a rueben, a corned beef and a build-your-own ham and turkey all on marbled rye with mustard. I'm currently in ration mode. I got my hands on a catered lunch box and it looked like a step up from the usual places like Corner Bakery or Potbelly. Got the roast beef on a pretzel roll. The pretzel roll wasn't anything special but there was a generous portion of meat and it had some good toppings like arugula and roasted red peppers. I wouldn't buy it on my own since I'm not even a fan of roast beef sandwiches. Fruit cup ok, chips, didn't even bother. It came with this thick toffee crunch cookie and I thought, toffee, not my thing. But I suddenly experienced sugar withdrawal and tried a bite of the cookie. It's a pretty big cookie and I found myself picking apart the cookie more and more. It has chunks of toffee which weren't bad and then suddenly I found myself biting down on a piece of chocolate. Boar's head cafe honestly taste like your run of the mill fast food joint in my humble opinion. The menu & advertisements will have you thinking that the offerings here are special but the actual taste of the food proves otherwise. For the record the crossing has an extremely rich buttery flavor that I do in fact enjoy but anything past that is forgettable. Now with that said there are a couple of qualities I enjoy. The restaurant carries these "black truffle chips" by deep river that are seriously ascending to my favorite snack. I love their sandwiches (breakfast/lunch) & salads. Unfortunately, I have a gluten sensitivity so I get my sandwiches with gluten free bread, which is an upcharge. This morning I decided to stop & just get gluten free toast, which I was told would be somewhere around $6.00 for TWO Slices of Bread. I was informed it would be charged for the bread plus an additional charge of $2.00 per slice because it's gluten free bread. Today is the day that I decided that I will be going to my favorite Trader Joe's for a loaf of gluten free bread for under $3.00 (PER LOAF = Approximately 10 slices of bread). The cashier at Boar's Head Cafe on Lake/Wells in downtown Chicago helped me to squash this unhealthy relationship for the betterment of my pocket book. I don't typically eat lunch meat. When I think of the words, "processed meat," I can only imagine all the chemicals/preservatives that I'd be ingesting. I mean, I'm already surrounded by many things that can cause cancer. However, many people raved about this restaurant and since it's so close to my office building, I had to give it a try. The inside is relatively spacious with many seats available. However, they are quickly taken during lunch hour on the weekdays (about 12pm - 1pm). It's a very bright place. The ordering system is somewhat efficient in that they have a separate cashier to ring up people who want a take-out salad or coffee beverage. I ordered the Turkey Pesto sandwich for $8.99 (which does not include any sides). It has Ovengold turkey, picante provolone cheese, roasted red peppers, and pesto on rustic sourdough bread, but I ordered it without cheese. The taste was decent, and the pesto wasn't overpowering. For the price, I do wish it came with sides. You might not feel completely full from just the sandwich alone. My coworkers recommend the coffee, cafe turkey, and cafe ham. I'll try other sandwiches eventually. read more

The sandwiches are consistently good so you know you're going to enjoy your lunch. Sandwiches come with your chips bag of choice or a small side (I believe) from the prepared section. They also have really good soup and tasty salads if you're not feeling a sandwich. Coworkers of mine have gotten breakfast here and say it's pretty good. The people are super nice! UPDATE: 8/18/17: Bacon, egg and cheese on ciabatta was very good. I just wish the inside of the ciabatta was toasted, with butter. I guess I could have asked for that, but didn't think of it. I got the half ham and swiss with mayo and brown mustard on a multigrain bread and it was delicious. I wish I could make it that good when I buy Boar's Head from the deli at home! My friend loved her sandwich and soup. She got chicken noodle and said it was really good, and nice and light. Not sure what she got as a sandwich with her combo - too busy talking to ask. So when I saw that there was an actual deli, I was pretty revved up to check it out. I had gone in there one morning to try out their cookies, and loved it. The toffee ones are amazing!! So, I thought that since the cookie was so delicious, the sandwiches must be really good too. I was wrong - at least with the one I chose. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich (which includes ham too). What do you think of when you hear "grilled cheese"? You think of buttered bread, with cheese in the middle, grilled until browned. The outside of the sandwich would have a nice buttery crispness to it, and the inside would be filed with ooey-gooey cheese, right? Unfortunately, this is not how they make grilled cheese. What I ended up with were 2 dry pieces of sourdough bread, a huge amount of ham in the middle, and 4 cheese slices. It was put in a heater (or press?) to warm/melt the cheese....AND NO BUTTER TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE! (See my photo) :( The sandwich tasted good (the insides), but the bread was so was dry due to the lack of butter. And most of the cheese hadn't melted at all. I feel sorry for the Boar's Head people if this was how their mamas made them grilled cheese as children. My friend got a salad. I assume she liked it, but we were so busy talking that she didn't say anything about it. I am not one to go somewhere once, have a bad experience and never return. So, I will be back. The cookies alone are enough to bring me back! Next time I will just order something different...and ask questions before I actually order it. I recommend checking it out. Boars Head is located down the street from my office, so in that sense, it's very convenient. They also offer online ordering, which is also very convenient. Slightly less convenient that you sometimes have to wait in line (at the "Grab & Go section) to pick up your online order, as opposed to other nearby spots that put them out on self-help shelves. More secure I guess, but really, is that such a big issue? Maybe, I don't really know. Also not convenient is that if you do go inside to order, the line is always super long and slow, and there are often no seats available. The food is OK. Not amazing but nothing to complain about. I am a little bummed that they no longer have an Asian salad on the menu, as it was a great option for those who can't do dairy. When you order a salad (or sandwich) that normally contains cheese without the cheese, it always feels like something is missing. But I digress... Lately I've been getting the ham sandwich (without cheese). I really like the fig spread that they put on it. I am no longer a vegetarian, but I still don't eat a lot of meat, so out of the box I knew this was not going to be a great match. They have a few options - a veggie hummus wrap (wraps are always gross, I think), and a caprese sandwich. I ordered the latter, and it was fine but cost me $9 that I would have rather spent elsewhere. Also, I wanted a kombucha but didn't get it because it was $5, which even tops Whole Foods' ridiculous price.
