At one point we received our food and looked at the menu and a server was immediately at our table asking if everything was okay. The FOOD! Wow! Exceptional. Last night we had a memorable dinner at Board & Batten in Mesa, AZ before attending a Christmas concert at the Mesa Arts Center. Atmosphere was upscale cottage, relaxed vibe, and extremely comfortable. Plenty of indoor/outdoor seating at 5:30-6:30pm. Our server Aaron provided excellent detailed menu recommendations and attentive service but not intrusive (perfect blend). The dinner menu was not expansive but filled with select high quality starters, salads, pastas, entrees, and desserts. We went with Aaron's recommendations, we started with sharing a "Fall House Salad", my wife ordered the "Squash Risotto", and I ordered the "Duroc Pork Porterhous". The salad was delicious and plentiful and both our entrees were prepared and presented exquisitely and were delectable. Kudos to the owner and entire staff, they were welcoming, friendly, and focused on a high quality dining experience for their customers. The location was more upscale than I expected. I'm not sure how it exists but I'm happy it does. The outdoor seating was comfortable and the staff welcoming. I was surprised cocktail The Sun Rises was so good. It is easy to go wrong with rose which was included in the drink. It is hard to go wrong with dates wrapped in bacon and theirs were good. I would have appreciated a little crunch but it didn't prevent us from eating them. The grilled cheese French Dip was excellent. The spicy chicken sandwich had a bun that was unevenly split and resulted it the top being dry and bready. It might have been a fluke. we had the most amazing lunch in a very long time! the space was bright and clean and the service was attentive. yes, I know, we had a sandwich and fries but I'm telling you...they're the best! the sandwich i'm raving about was their grilled chicken BLT & A. The tomato jam was insanely flavorful and I just wanted even more. The kennebec French fries were insanely delicious. Perfectly crispy and seasoned well while paired with the most delicious spiced house ketchup. For dessert, we had the salted caramel butter bar which again another item that is insanely delicious. We've been here twice now: once for an anniversary celebration and again for a casual weekend lunch. Both visits were amazing. The staff is top-notch friendly and attentive, the atmosphere could not be any better out on the patio on a nice day, and the food is absolutely delicious. Just wow. The ambiance is beautiful. Very posh and clean but I have seen a great casual wear for attire. Our server James was phenomenal. Very attentive and a constant while we dined. He was polite and wasn't afraid to ask the chef questions we had. The food. Literal chefs kiss. We arrived at the best times end of the social hour and beginning of dinner. The pretzel and sweet rolls are delicious but small caution, they do contain a lot of sea salt. So if you don't enjoy a salty pallet, just be careful. I still recommend them. The three entrees and desert we ate were one of a kind. The Gnocchi was perfect. Soft and savory. Taste best mixed with the tomato salade. The Pork chop was cooked to heavenly perfection. Creamed corn was delicious. & the fish (I cannot remember the name, it was second under water) was amazing. This dish does contain a spicy flavor but the figs made it balance out well. Came here upon recommendation and reading Yelp reviews. Our waiter Logan gave great recommendations. The menu descriptions weren't very enticing and the menu is really small but the food is delicious! My husband got the rainbow trout and loved the flavors and he doesn't usually choose the fish entree. My pork chop was juicy and had a great crust on it. The polenta was creamy (not like a cake consistency like some places, this was more like a thick sauce). The cocktails are the only meh part. Stick with the wine. The desserts were great too. I wouldn't have gotten the apple tart (not a big fan on apple pie type desserts) but again thanks to Logan we got it. It was more like a roll made of apple slices and puff pastry. This little gem is tucked away and has inside and outside dining options. The menu is unique and fresh. Our server presented the seasonal menu, specials including a special Autumn cocktail and tempura pork belly starter. Both were delicious but the show stopper was the roasted grape and olive mix with herbs, feta cheese and grilled bread. I have been obsessing over it since Friday and will try to make it myself! Warm grapes, who knew?!?! The server presented yummy options for the kids. We ordered extra delicious shoestring fries - and we were not disappointed with the gigantic serving bowl of piping hot fries. Two dishes were excellent and two were good, but underwhelming. The bacon wrapped dates were a bit of a disappointment. They were definitely missing something to balance out the sweetness of the dates. I think it needed a strong cheese; the scant shavings of parmesan just didn't cut it. The turkey club was a fantastic melding of fresh notes of avocado and a yummy jam that swooped over the tastebuds like a flavor wave. The focaccia bread used for the sandwich was phenomenal, and maybe one of the best focaccia I've ever had. The French dip grilled cheese missed the mark in flavor and meat-to-cheese ratio. Perfectly grilled and melty, it looked promising, but needed salt and a bit more meat to balance it out. The almond cake was delicious. I loved the light sprinkle of salt over the sorbet! Nice touch! A friend and I had dinner at Board and Batten last night and we were both impressed. The decor was contemporary and bright and the dining room is relatively small, capacity being only 205. If I were going here with my husband, looking for a more romantic atmosphere, I would choose the patio seating at one of the fire pits under the strings of lights and nearby trees. At dinner last night we started with the appetizer that was on special, of which I cannot remember the name. It was delicious! A sort of mushroom risotto deep fried ball with marinara and shaved cheese. For dinner my friend had the 8 oz. C.A.B Pepper Steak and I had the Sonoran Pasta Co. Rigatoni Amatracianna. Both were plated beautifully plated and equally as delicious! The steak was very tender and the pasta was al dente. We were very impressed with our meals! Last, but not least, was our dessert we shared...the Salted Caramel Bar. It was unique and flavorful. The salty/sweet....yummmm! I felt the pricing was a little high when I mentally compared the atmosphere and service to other restaurants with the same pricing but, nonetheless, I enjoyed the experience and would certainly go back to Board and Batten again. read more

Great upscale dinner in the Mesa area! Made a reservation for 3 people on a Thursday and was happy we did! The interior was full of patron and the outside patio was closed due to rainy weather. All the items we ordered were tasty! The bacon wrapped dates were good but not the best we've had. We usually prefer to have them stuffed with some type of cheese for a little extra umph. We also ordered the Cacio e Pepe as an appetizer and we satisfied with the taste and portion size. Our entire orders were the roasted chicken, pork shoulder, and pepper steak. Brought my mom & wife here for lunch. A little little bit off the beaten path, but well worth going to this tucked away gem! The food, service and atmosphere are outstanding. Even though there was a large wedding party occurring at the same time, they were staffed properly, and it never affected our excellent service. Like for real... the waiter can rattle off so many details about any and every dish(I could never). We love that the menu switches up so we get to try new things when we go! PLEASE run right now and get the Swordfish before it's gone. I have never had a better combination of flavors! The pork was fork tender and bursting with flavor. Also get the chocolate dessert that has the orange on top. It's so rich but I never wanted to stop eating it(I normally don't like chocolate cake). This place is a hidden gem! On my first visit, I received a good first impression. After reading about this spot on Yelp, I put it on my "to try" list. The grounds and the Cape Cod home itself is inviting and quaint. The property is surrounded by trees on two sides makes this place seem like it is somewhere else than in an industrial park. I love the open air dining room which is welcoming with its contemporary lighting and decor. Our server, Lauren offered her favorite recommendations and was so friendly, as were the rest of the staff. The french dip with smoked Gouda on local Noble bread was delicious. My roasted turkey club was very good on pillow like homemade focaccia. It would have been dynamite with just a tad more of the tomato jam. :) Of all things, who would have thought that the Lemon Caesar Salad would be the dish receiving the most kudos?!?! (We were told that the fresh creamy lemon dressing is the secret!) I can see why many choose to host their private weddings and events here. This was my first time coming to Board and Batten and let me tell you the aesthetic of this place is 10/10. Like, I want my future house to look like this. There are mature trees all around, the landscaping is beautiful. It truly does not feel like you are in Arizona, especially is you are seated on the West side of the outdoor dining. If you look over to the East it looks like the east gate is at a bit taller than the rest of the area (which is a dirt lot to the right of the restaurant) and it gives you the sense that you are on a hillside cuz you pretty much just see sky. To the West of Board and Batten is a wedding venue so of course that area is well dressed up and has gorgeous landscaping. The outside lighting all over the area made it very romantic. I absolutely loved every aspect of the aesthetic. Food wise .. Appetizer was the crab cakes. Interesting flavors, crab was good, please do without the bacon powder stuff. 7/10 for those. Also ordered the burger. The burger was big, very tasty and the fries were seasoned very well. The ketchup is a spicy ketchup, not too much of a fan of that I would rather be given an option between regular and spicy. Overall that dish was a 9/10. The other dish we ordered unfortunately did not hit the mark. It was the lamb pasta (cannot remember the exact name). The pasta was undercooked so it was hard and the lamb was dry. The sauce was mediocre, it definitely could have used more flavor. Tasted as if I had opened a bottle of ragu and poured it over my pasta. I would not order that dish again. That dish gets a 4/10. Our waitress Carly was super sweet and attentive. I would possibly come back, but really only for the aesthetic. read more
