Just in Boston for a couple days. I wanted to see a few sights but they were just it if waking distance for me so I tried Blue Bikes. Great experience over all. The second bike that I used broke. The great shifter got stuck in low gear. There was another track of bikes 2 blocks away so I exchanged it for another one. No other problems. Boston had an awesome network of bike trails to use. I was able to see everything I wanted to see and more. The app worked flawlessly too. I think the only thing I would criticize it that it didn't show me how much time I had remaining in the pan I purchased. I will definitely use this service again if I have the chance. read more

Tourists - be careful if you are travelling as a group. These bikes do not accept many credit/ debit cards. We took out 3 adventure passes and the 4th person in our party couldn't get a bike, despite trying 3 additional cards. Support is only by email and takes hours for the company to respond. The website doesn't explain how to take out bikes as a group. The telephone number on the email the company sends , is out of service. We've biked in Paris, Barcelona and Hamburg - a much better experience than these Blue Bikes - beware!! read more

I learned to ride a bike on BlueBikes! The service was a great way to try out the bikes when I wanted them. I have been using them to commute to the gym now along a bike lane. I often see full or empty docks like the other comments describe. But the density of docks is so high in my area that it never causes an issue. Definitely scan the map before you leave before you ride. There are some differnces between the bike models they offer, but nothing bad. The bikes are definitely heavy, but what would you expect? This service forms a marvelous alternative to the MBTA, or a compliment to it for short hops. Also, most of these commenters need to learn how to dock their bikes or read the clear and straightforward purchase options. read more

Not totally getting the BlueBike hate. To be honest, it seems like a lot of users don't understand the intention of this system. BlueBikes are NOT meant for extended rides all over town; it's really meant to be more of a short commuter/bridge service from point A to point B. When you return your bike, a green light flashes if you have docked it properly, and (if you're using the app), you will get a push notification that the bike has been returned. I cannot overstate the importance of using the app so you can keep tabs on your account. It also gives you a clock while you're mid-ride so you know how much longer you have before being charged overage fees. I have been BlueBiking during the COVID pandemic in lieu of using public transit (I commute from Cambridge to Boston) for the last 4 months, and while the bikes are nothing fancy and you'll occasionally run into a full dock, or non-functioning individual docks, I would say that 90% of my trips have been problem-free. Yes, sometimes I run into a full dock, and that stinks, but I've had no issue with calling customer service and getting them to waive the overage fee. read more

This isn't about the bikes themselves, which are fine. Whatever. This is about their customer service. I have had to call them twice. Once in September when I was unable to cancel my subscription after finding out I can't manage what happens what happens with my card info and then again today when I got a notification that they were unable to auto charge my card which expired last month. Both times, I had the exact same experience: the first customer service rep told me that they were unable to do anything to assist me unless I confirmed the last four digits of my credit card number.... and the first six digits of my credit card number. I told him he could look it up by my name, phone number and also the account number which I had handy. "Sorry unless we confirm those numbers we cannot assist you." After cursing out the first rep, I called back and got a second rep who told me the exact same thing. I'm sorry but there is no way I'm giving 10 out of 12 digits of my credit card number to someone in a foreign country who is obviously giving me a fake name under any circumstances. More swearing. More hanging up. The third time I called their customer service line, the rep says "Sure let me look up your account by your phone number" and during the entirety of the call never once mentions needing to confirm anything with the credit card number. Whatever foreign call center BlueBikes is using is clearly running a side hustle scamming credit card numbers from naive Americans. I have filed a couple complaints with the Mass AG's office about this as well but thought that people should be warned that you should not, for any reason, give their customer service any of your credit card information because they are clearly employing some bad actors over there. read more

started out ok in August '21, then this fall, BB has not managed capacity of docks downtown, particularly, in the Seaport area. Many times, had to leave bike in one of the very few open docks in a multi-kiosk area, which were broken. Notified BB, and instead of managing capacity better, I am now charged $89, and more for overdue usage. Their problem should not be my problem. They will not refund pro rata of my annual membership, as I wish to cancel, and website does not allow for cancelling auto-renew of membership, as their instructions state. I locked in into the station and checked this as I always did by attempting to pull it out and the bike wouldn't budge. Unfortunately, due to the BlueBikes station not working properly, it didn't log that my bike had been returned. When I went to take out another bike later that same day across town, it became clear to me that the counter was still counting so I immediately messaged BlueBikes via their app to let them know I had in fact returned the bike and of the station error. Later I messaged them again. They did not respond to either message. Upon my return home 4 DAYS LATER they finally "responded" stating the bike hadn't been returned and as such they would charge me $US250 + tax ($AUD408.49). I have since sent several messages and emails to BlueBikes / Lyft requesting an investigation and to explain their error, receiving only policy recitations that 'unreturned bikes incur a fee', without anyone taking into account the validity of my claims or that the fault lays squarely with BlueBikes and their faulty docking station. I thought Citibikes was bad but blue nines is worse. They have the same issues as Citibikes , socks bikes not working etc and then sone, they both have the same underlying problem monopolies. Their app and kiosks are highly unreliable will work 50 percent of time so keep ur fingers crossed or ready to call a can . The only redeeming feature is exceptional customer service on the phone likely outsourced to sone company i somewhere in Guatemala or whereabouts :). Who should get 5 stars. I had some issues with the annual renewal of the membership, and somehow none of my credit cards worked. They told me to contact customer support, which I did. When the customer support person came on the phone, he was extremely rude. Frankly speaking, it was downright unprofessional. I told him my issue, and he basically brushed it off with "I'm not sure what the problem is, there is nothing I can do". He later told me to try some more times, and "call back and tell them to escalate the matter". Naturally, I got confused as to what he meant by "them" because I would like to have him transfer me to these more helpful people. My issue isn't with Blue Bikes per se or the concept of renting a bike, it's with their LOUSY "customer service", which is apparently connected to LYFT. Last year I informed Blue Bikes (Boston) that I had found an abandoned/stolen bike on our street and that I had wheeled it to a nearby Blue Bike station. I gave a description of where I put it on the rack, and got a reply from someone saying, "okay". No "thanks for doing that", just a single word, "okay". It was no different than if they had replied with, "whatever"! Today I informed Blue Bikes that I had witnessed someone slash a tire on a bike while it was in a bike stand. Again, I gave the location for the bike, its position in the stand, etc. so that some unsuspecting person wouldn't pay to use it, then discover the flat tire. This time I got an impersonal, canned sounding response thanking me for "reporting an abandoned bike" What's wrong with Blue Bikes? Who do they hire for customer service, gum chewing 12 year olds? Seat post (which I had locked in place) slipped suddenly and the seat fell out from under me while I happened to be hand signaling. Took me right down, and landed I stomach first on one of the handle bars. Lucky to escape with just losing my wind, some bruises, and mild soreness. Do you know that if a competitive share bike is left in anywhere in the city, it's immediately impounded? That's part of Boston's "exclusive contract" with BlueBikes. Seriously? I'd love for someone with more legal chops than myself to look into if the Sherman Act applies to such shady dealings. How would that be any different if we suddenly heard, for example, that taxis and Lyft cars were no longer allowed at Logan airport because Uber signed an exclusive contract with them? As for the share bikes themselves, which would I prefer? A $1 per hour LimeBike I can leave anywhere and find anywhere, or a $5 per hour ($2.50 every 30 minutes OMG) BlueBike often unavailable and only at their charging hubs? Add to that their notoriously poor track record for repairs and worse customer service... The idea is sound. The execution is poor. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE. I went on a ride and properly docked my bike. Green light and everything. Few hours go by and I get a notification that my ride is still active. So I go back to where I docked the bike (luckily it was still there) and re-confirmed that my bike was docked. A day goes by and I get a threatening email that I am being charged $1200 for missing bike. I panic, send an email back with all the details they requested for an incident report. Few days go by, and I get an email that they are processing a $1200 fee! I call Lyft, and they tell me that blue bikes is its own system and they don't have a customer service number, but to email them. So I am emailing many times, and all of my emails are ignored. All I get in response are emails essentially saying that my blue bikes account is going to be locked and that I still owe the money. Absolutely horrible company. Claims it's "public transit" but it's a private company contracted by the cities and run by Lyft the car share company. They have the absolute worst customer service ever and you should not ride their bikes unless you want to risk being charged hundreds of dollars like I did. They have you sign an agreement saying that their computer algorithm determines a bikes location so you have absolutely no way to dispute what they say and they can say you didn't dock a bike properly or whatever they want and automatically deduct your money. I used to love BlueBikes. But their customer service (via Lyft) and reliability has become horrendous. The bikes and docs malfunction so often that I just assume it's broken my first few times of renting or returning. The bikes are also heavy and a chore to ride. One of their docs recently malfunctioned and didn't register my return. Although I immediately called customer support, and they promised to clear it all up, but they didn't. My account was locked for the next month, and they repeatedly sent me threatening emails, accusing me of a "stolen" bike. I called Lyft support about a dozen more times and sent multiple emails. Then they charged my credit card about $250 for the bike they admitted wasn't missing, and it was all due to a technical problem Lyft admitted to a month earlier. They eventually refunded the "stolen bike" change but refused to even consider refunding $3 for a handful of rides I had to rent on my card while my account was erroneously locked. I ended up buying my own portable bike. Life is way better now that I don't rely on BlueBikes/Lyft. I'd give them negative starts if I could. read more

I live in boston and the T system still results in my commute being over an hour to get to Kendall Square in Cambridge. So when my company offered subsidized blue bike memberhsips I took it up. Biking part of my commute has saved me a ton of time in the nice weather...... when the system works. Because there are so many people in Kendall Square they generally staff the high use stations at rush hour to keep docks open in the morning and make extra bikes available at night. However, it's gotten pretty unreliable recently. The staff have been missing multiple days and sometimes I have to bike a mile away into cambridge to find a dock. Then I have a 15-20 minutes walk which is a) super annoying and b) takes away the time I save by biking. I would be thrilled if I could reliably get a dock anywhere near my building but sometimes I can't risk it and just take the T. Please just make this more reliable!! read more

I have been a member of Blue bike for a few years now. I need to rode a bike to work cuz my knees are so bad now. I work in copley sq.and lovenear China town, so when ever I get out of work there are never any bikes When I get to work there are never any docks. I call, they never do anything about it, like monitor those stations at those times.I have the App. It is only ok, cuz I cant get Wi-fi or service often when I am trying to use it. BUT here is the thing that really makes me mad! Every year I pay 100 for a new membership. It should come with a key if I need it. I have lost my key a while ago, and I figured I could get a new one when I renew. They said they were going to charge me 10 dollars!! Wait, I just paid 100??!! I would give a 0 if possible. Their kiosk states that the first 30 minutes are free. They use the term "free" loosely. This does not mean that if you use a bike for 29 minutes and then return it that the ride was free. Customer service rep said they get a lot of complaints about consumers not understanding their user agreements and that they frequently get people that end up with charges of over 100 dollars because they'll rent the bike and keep it for 12 hours. After your initial "free" (that you pay 8 dollars for) 30 minutes, they charge you for each additional 15 minutes. Horrible business model. I have no idea how they stay in business. read more

Hubway was actually pretty great! The directions are a bit confusing but essentially you pay $6 for a 24 hour period but you could only ride it for 30 minutes at a time before you get overcharged (which isn't that expensive). So you just have to bring it to another hub within 30 minutes or you get charged a few extra bucks because the system is designed as a transportation station, not a visiting/tourist attraction so for its real purpose, its actually a good business model. But there is a $100 security charge to your card that isn't returned for about a week so thats pretty annoying. I really liked the experience though. I was able to teach my friend how to ride a bike and we got to see parts of the city. The hubs are also very frequently around the city so even if you walk far and don't want to take the T or walk back, you always have Hubway as an option :) read more

I rarely wrote any reviews, but using Bluebikes is such a nightmare that I can't help but writing these down. I used Bluebikes for only a week to commute, but technological problems have already occurred 3 times. The primary issue was that I couldn't end the ride. The last time when I used bluebikes, I tried two stations to return the bike, but all the docks didn't work. I contacted the Customer Service; the representative found out that the stations were disconnected, and then simply told me to return it to another station. It was pretty late and the station was away from my place, so I asked them to send some technicians here. They told me that I could leave the bike at the station, and then the nightmare started. Every 24 hours the app would remind me that I was still using a bike. Then I contacted the Customer Service. Then they told me they already contacted the operation team. For FIVE days, apparently no operation team showed up. I went back to the station; the bike was properly docked there. I took photos, sent them to the Customer Service, asked them to end the ride for me, and then they told me AGAIN they would work with the operation team...I don't know how this will end. I don't understand how or why the company could have turned such a great idea of bike sharing into such a hateful product. It could have made others' lives more convenient and themselves a little profit. Now I would rather spend more time and money on other means of transportation than touch bluebikes again. Been trying hubway for a week on the monthly plan ($10/month) and it's been great so far. Only once was it hard to find a bike around Kendall Sq around 6PM. I guess lots of tourists get confused by the payment plan so they should probably make that clearer. For routine commuters though, it's a great way to get around. They now have an app that let me start riding right away without waiting to get the card in the mail. The app sends you a code to unlock a bike, and also lets you know what stations have bikes/docks available. I'm the type of biker that only bikes when the weather is nice and I always end up leaving my bike somewhere and forgetting where I left it so hubway works way better for me than owning my own. I also like that I don't have to worry about the bike or bike lights getting stolen, it getting trashed by bad weather, etc. read more

Getting them on the phone is impossible for the third time I tried today and after waiting 10 minutes and heard countless "will are being connected to the next rep" I got through. The person answered my question in a manner that made no sense to me. When I asked for further explanation I got cut off. I sent and email 2 days before, also got an answer I didn't get. I should have read all the reviews before daring to rent a "city bike". I can't understand how this company gets away with charging customers for errors that arise from their own logistical challenges. Can't the city of Boston demand of their contractors, something better for their citizens? I am having the exact same experience that other users here. Rented 2 bikes, had to ride more than 5 extra miles than my original plan as the 5 different docking stations that we found were either full or not "online", returned both bikes at the same time in the same docking station, received a notification in the app that the ride was done, but then the next day I noticed that a timer was still ongoing in the app. Come to check, the trip is still open for one of the bikes. Customer service tells me that I never returned the bike and that I will be liable for the $1,200 penalty. No solution offered other than "return the bike to the docking station", I went back the next day and no bike with the mentioned number is to be found. This is very frustrating. Please don't ever use this system, but if you absolutely have to, document everything, record videos and take photos. Sadly, Do not trust this company. And cover all your bases. read more

This one star is for the attitude. They do customer service as if they are washing dishes for mom in the middle of Overwatch. They simply don't stand up to the name of "customer service" because they treat customers like their enemies. I used to love BlueBikes for its convenience until I found that I have been silently charged 2 months of ridiculous fees. When I asked to refund ALL my unreasonable overages, the representative refused and only returned one month's fee. He said in a monotone that he couldn't return the other months' overcharge because it's "beyond 60 days which is listed in their policy". I held on the call and read the terms and conditions carefully, and didn't find this "policy" he said. He then kept implying "you are welcome to sue us" and "The reason I had these overage fees was that I was uneducated" and kept asking "What else can I help you?" PS: BlueBikes charges unreasonably (lost bike for $1,200 while an average 24-gear bike costs $600) and they will never refund annual membership fee after 30 days. (Btw, the same agent told me "I can gladly help you cancel your membership but you're not gonna get your money back", which immediately makes me think he is incompetent for customer service) Most of all, they will never display the cost of a ride which directly resulted in a big chance of being overcharged. read more

Horrible customer service, bikes and docks are defective and they will charge you up to $1200 if someone steals your bike after you were unable to dock it. I tried to dock my bike for over 10 minutes and ended up leaving it in the dock because I was already 15minutes late to class. I contacted customer service immediately and they asked for a picture of the bike, but it was stolen when I went back. I was told to find the bike or I would be charged up to $1200. I got a police report, searched Boston for days and even talked to a journalist who was told via phone that my charge would be rectified due to being unfair. They never rectified the charge, have been ghosting the reporter and are now sending me threatening emails every day for a charge of $270. They have been j**king me around for weeks, giving different explanations for why they can't cancel the charge, like "you didn't send the police report on time, you didn't find the bike within 24 hours, you didn't answer our email when we contacted you" - which is all false. They LIE CONSTANTLY. I have evidence of non-stop emailing with them and now that I am trying to pay their ridiculous charge so they'll leave me alone - I am unable to do so because I am locked out of my account. Every time I talk to someone on the phone, they either send me a broken link, hang up on me, ask me to send the police report again, or that they'll contact another department. When I email with them, I get the same generic, unhelpful response. I have gotten NOWHERE even when trying to pay their unfair charge. read more

I signed up for a monthly membership to Hubway, because it served my purposes perfectly. I make mid-range trips around the city, I don't have a car in town, I like to bike ride, and many others. However, I didn't renew my monthly membership based on my 3 strikes rule: Strike 1: I signed up for Hubway online mid-July, because I was planning on using the service for a few trips the next day. That didn't happen, because after I signed up, I received a message telling me to wait one week for my key fob to arrive. No temporary code to use in the meantime, or anything. I couldn't use the service for a whole week after paying them, which really annoyed me. Strike 2: By the time I received my key fob a week later, I had calmed down, and was excited again to use the service. Now I understand and appreciate the 30 minute rule. However, I had to make a trip that, according to Google Maps, was about 35 minutes. So I decided to park the bike halfway and take out another one - split it into 2 shorter trips. I parked at Copley, but the system wouldn't let me take another bike from that station. So I had to walk down to the Pru and take out a bike there. I haven't found any 'fine print' that says you can't take out a bike from the same station or anything about a time limit. Strike 3: Monthly membership ends on the calendar month. I was able to use my monthly membership for only ONE week before it was canceled. If I had been able to use it from the day I signed up, instead of waiting a week for my fob to show up, I would have at least been able to use it for 2 weeks, and probably not be so disappointed. Strike 4?: I wrote this to the Hubway customer service, and they were direct in basically saying those were the rules. First, they are terrible rules, and second your 'rules' are not clearly stated (strike 1 was stated after they got my money, strike 2 never stated, and strike 3 was stated on one faq somewhere on the site). For the week that I used the service, it was GREAT. I was excited to continue my membership, and get my girlfriend signed up. However, the company is terrible, and they not only lost my business, but my girlfriend's business too. All it would have taken from them was a simple "Sorry for your disappointment about our stupid rules which aren't clearly stated, and we will comp your first 7 days of use." Bike shares are a great service to have in bigger cities, and this is no exception. It's great to have access to alternative transportation, especially when the T has limited hours or routes. Biking is usually the fastest way to travel the routes I usually take. And when it works, it works well. However, God help you if you have a customer service issue where you actually need to speak to someone at Hubway. I had to speak with 7 or 8 different representatives over the course of a week, and can confidently say that Hubway's customer service has a culture of "too bad, sucks for you." Perhaps I've become a little spoiled lately with new, urban businesses bending over backwards with customer service. After all, many smart business realize that's what's really important to the newer generation of consumers, growing tired of Walmart business model of the cheapest price, no matter what. My issue was that I was unaware of the monthly membership ending at the end of the month, regardless of when it's activated. Why didn't I know? Because they admitted that they "block and reroute" certain pages from their website if it's accessed through a firewall, such as at work. So even though they admitted that I probably couldn't see that page from my end, it took over a week of waiting on returned phone calls and emails that never came, repeated calls, and attitude. In the end, I'd rather eat the cost of what I lost then continue dealing with them. I guess they got my money for that month, but they sure lost a potential long-term customer. read more
