Great little coffee shop nothing more to say beyond that I didn't get any food because well I'm just not a big coffee shop pastry fan. They did have good espresso won't happen and people enjoyed what they got with our group. Prices are about on par with what you expect for a higher end coffee shop plenty of seating and it's plenty of seating and lots of light and places to sit comfortably to talk with friends ranging in groups from small to large. They had a few couches even which is always welcoming because sometimes a hard wooden chair isn't great to sit in for a couple hours as you do work for socialize or drink a few cups of coffee. There's absolutely no lines here which I find really nice because it seems nowadays there are lots and lots of lines a better coffee shops due to understaffed... A quick visit to Tacoma - and boy, were we glad to find this coffee oasis. The espresso was SUBLIME....I mean, seriously, arrestingly, eyes-shut-thinking one-is-in-heaven, tear jerkingly good. Stopped here for a quick coffee before a road trip. Got a drip coffee and a chocolate chip cookie to-go. Both items were just okay. Drip coffee wasn't bitter, but not super flavorful either. One of the girls was very friendly and helpful, the other girl who made my drink had a terrible attitude, and the drink was not drinkable. I can't give them another red cent. Do better! I have given this place several chances, but every time I am disappointed. Two times my $5.75 coffee was cold and I had to heat it myself in the microwave provided (I guess this happens a lot thus the microwave in the first place). They have never asked if I want my $4.00 croissant heated (I microwaved that for myself, too). Then there isn't enough bandwidth to even sign onto the network. This has been the case THREE times! They recently took away their wifi access so if you need that, this is not your spot. Aaannd, I just had a really weird interaction with a person behind the bar about it. I had just bought a coffee and settled in, and then realized that there was no internet and so had packed up. On the way out I asked the barista if the no wifi was temporary or permanent. She said that some people were 'abusing' the space by being there too long so they took it away. Okay, kind of intense, but whatever. I was like, okay, and was heading to the door and she shouted after me, with definite edge, 'You can always go to the library!' Pardon me? Let me tell you there is a special kind of feeling you get from being shouted at to go to the library after you have 1) just purchased something, 2) said basically nothing about their weird policy even though you definitely have a sense it's about keeping 'undesirable' people out of the space (I've seen them ask someone to leave before), 3) gotten the sense from being shouted at that maybe *you* are the kind of undesireable person that they want to keep out, and 4) were very conscious of the fact that everyone in the shop is now looking at you, brown person, as you leave an otherwise all white establishment while getting shouted at. 5) Also, to reiterate, she shouted this after me for no apparent reason. Needless to say, never going to Bluebeard again. P.S. No shade towards the library. It is true that the library is more welcoming than Bluebeard. read more

HC access is ridiculous and very dangerous going into front door..... almost lost it - if it wasn't for my buddy watching my back. I mentioned it to the Mge/Owner? My favorite coffee place! I love stopping by to pick up their freshly roasted beans. My favorite (and apparently a top pick) is El Capitan. The staff is happy to grind your beans at whatever coarse level you need. I always get coarse/cold brew. I've only ever had 1 person mess it up out of the 15 months I've been getting coffee from here. They don't have the biggest coffee menu like your average popular places, but what they have are the standards and staples with a few specialty milks and flavors. They have a big garage door open on nice days and plenty of tables for folks to work on computers. It's always pretty chill here. Never that loud either. read more

Was in Tacoma for a day and wanted to sample some coffee shops, try espresso or cortados and see how Tacoma is doing with quality and attention to detail. Good Yelp reviews and location so dropped in with my wife. Good that they know what a cortado is, but what I got wasn't a cortado - more like a short latte. The way they roast their beans here, I don't think espresso or more 'pure' drinks will shine best. Though their basic bean isn't Starbucks, think about Starbucks when it comes to what they do best: it isn't going to be espresso shots. The staff were nice and friendly, but didn't seem very knowledgeable about espresso or making drinks...more like college kids for whom this is just a job. The physical space is large by coffee shop standards and has games, puzzles, is kid-friendly, and is basically connected to the brew-pub next door via a small lobby. It is light-filled and relaxing, and more of a messy living room vibe than Kirkland pristine and classy. I didn't try any eats so not sure what they offer. read more

It gets pretty busy especially when there are students returning back to school and studying.. but none the less it's a chill spot, not so great in the customer service department but that's okay most people come not to be talked to anyway! I am glad I read the comments first because I wondered why they had 4 stars vs. 5. The coffee was fantastic! That's right, 5 star coffee! I had a nitro brew something with oat milk latte that knocked my socks off. I cannot complain, other thank a bit expensive, $6.50 for a large, but I am guessing that is the going rate for fancy coffee; I don't drink it much. People are complaining because apparently there is loitering by perceived undesirable people and others. Okay, let's break that down. A business is in business to make money for providing a widget. Here the widget is great coffee and a potential coffee experience. I came at 2 to meet someone and left at 4 (so wanted to leave at 315, but could not get out, sigh). As I sat for 2 hours, I watched a clean cut young man take up a couch and drink nothing while he was on his phone the entire time. I have no idea how long he was there before. There was another young man who joined him an hour and a half later and also drank nothing. Other people came and went, drinking coffee all. One person was drawing but had coffee (this adds to coffee house cred). People did come to drink or just get coffee, as is the goal of the coffee shop. It is a transitional area (many places are these days), so having people come in and stay all day might not make money for the place. Also, to address the working and catching wifi issue, I am confused why people do not work at home where we are all addictedto Netflix. I will compare this place to Valhalla, which is a more "serious" coffee house. I say that because it really is not a loiter situation. Few chairs and tables, buy coffee, talk about coffee, drink coffee, that is what goes on, lol. In other words, people go there for the coffee. I would compare this cafe as more of a cafe space/vibe, but money still needs to made on what...coffee... not free internet all day, etc. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but it is probably discouraging for worker and owners see regulars unable to sit. The best place in Tacoma to meet with a friend and chit chat. Its dining room is large and in charge - you're likely to find a place to relax and your words aren't shared with the entire coffeehouse. My friend Jenny and I love to frequent coffee places and talk for over an hour, so yes - as of December '16 - this is the best spot for it. The coffee is good, they have several delicious gluten-free snacks (not that I'm allergic to gluten, but for those that are) and easy to-go cups or a cute variety of in-house mugs. Finally found good coffee in the Tacoma area! Yes. Ok if you like beans that are not burnt, a properly sized latte (aka not huge) or some tasty americanos, come here. Don't delay. Don't try a place a mile closer. I did. It didn't work. This is the one. First place I found to buy beans around that I felt confident I wasn't just throwing my money in the toilet. Plus they got a cutsie logo so that makes you feel better about how cool and hipster you are. Seriously I should have bought one of the cups they had. Or a shirt. But I have shirts so I'm doing ok don't worry. Still enjoying my Mexico beans as recommended by the staff and must say it does go splendidly with a little drive to the Hoh Rainforest. Cons None yet. I'm a coffee snob. In my hometown there are just a small handful of places that I can drink coffee at. I need consistency, I need good milk and I need it to be "craft" level. Luckily I was sent here by the people at Valhalla. On the weekends I usually get two cappuccinos. So I got my second one here. The coffee itself was good. Not super memorable. But they did have the best milk I had through the whole mini vacation. And honestly, that may be more important than the coffee at this point. Because if you think about it...high end coffees aren't extremely different in their flavors. But if you do the milk wrong...it all just doesn't live up. Anyway, the interior is a little "flour mill market" sparse. But they had a cool bar to sit at that faces 6th avenue. The avenue that lets you look out on all the rugged hipsters that must live around here. In Reno, we have "hipsters" with beards and stuff, but they all dress sharply. The hipsters in Tacoma seem a little less trendy and more real. I know..strange observation...but really, it's a coffee review and you just read the last paragraph. Glad this place is here when I return for my inevitable pilgrimage home each year. Because from what I hear...there are only 3 craft coffee places in Tacoma. I hope that changes soon. read more
