The space is warm and inviting, the people are wonderful, and it works just as well for grabbing something quickly as it does for settling in and staying awhile. Now let's talk about my drink - Cookie Butter Hojicha Latte (hot)! I'm a huge fan of hojicha, but I don't get it often as it's not as common as matcha. When I ordered, I was actually thinking about a cold drink, but I'm so glad I didn't mention cold or hot, because the hot version is the best hot drink I've had this year - creamy, subtly sweet, the nuttienss of cookie butter just works perfectly with the hojicha. The store also carries baked goods from 2 local bakeries (one is Lobo Bakery) in Tacoma, and all the baked goods are reasonably priced. I enjoyed the Black Sesame Sugar Miso Morning Bun - gently sweet, buttery and flaking, paired well with the hojicha.

On our first occasion the latte was iced and on the second it was hot. Both versions of this drink were great! Hojicha is a roasted Japanese Green Tea just in case specifics are needed here. On the first time chef Jan Parker was also hear serving food from a small menu which made this coffee shop extremely busy! But on the second time when no additional activities or events were happening it was really chill and I was the only customer. Steve and I got baked goods too, a real Achilles Heel for us and they are very good. I believe if memory serves they come from El Lobo Bakery if we recall the signage correctly. So between the drinks and the baked goods Civic Roasters is a great addition to the Tacoma coffee shop scene.

I hate to say this, but I think this was the worst Vietnamese coffee I've ever had. I didn't think it tasted like Vietnamese coffee at all. The flavor was just not there. Also I'm not sure if it was drip or espresso, but it kinda tasted burnt. Next was the sandwich. I was pretty disappointed with it. Pickled veggies weren't bad. The other veggies were okay. But the meat was just not right. It just didn't taste right. The flavors were off and the meat was kinda dry. The whole sandwich was pretty dry. It didn't come with mayo, but it was definitely needed. The sandwich was better after I added some Kewpie mayo at home, but that meat still wasn't right. The muffin was honestly the best thing I had. It wasn't bad, but it can definitely be improved. It could've used more pumpkin flavor. I enjoyed the bites with cream cheese. It was a good combination overall. I can't say much for service because I used DoorDash, but it seemed pretty quick. Although I can't imagine there being that many people there at 6am. We finally got the opportunity on Sunday morning as we wanted some caffeine and some treats for our fur babies. The menu is concise and simple which is great as often times, too many options can be very overwhelming and hard to read. They have coffee, non-coffee drinks, energy drinks and even bubble tea! Additionally, for food they have banh mis, breakfast sandwiches, Blazing bagels, and other pastries. The barista here was very friendly and professional, she made sure to check that she got our order right and made sure to give our fur babies some treats. I love that they have special treats rather than Milkbones as our fur babies devoured them quickly! Even our picky girl who isn't keen on new treats but she loved it so much! Our drinks were made to perfection too, not too sweet and with four shots definitely helped us stay awake. They also have a reward system where if you order 7 times, you get one free which I think is great as other places make it purchase 9, 10, or even more. We look forward to making them a stop for whenever we are in Lakewood.

On a positive note, the café itself is very cute and aesthetically decorated. I especially loved the inspirational quotes displayed on the tables. They also had a shelf featuring crafts made by a local artist, which I thought was a wonderful way to support the community. I often end up with two drinks: a coffee for now, and a Lotus for later. They also have wonderful treats like macarons, cake pops, breakfast burritos and sandwiches.
