Went there at 8pm on a Friday night, was seated pretty quickly by a friendly hostess, then it all went down hill from there. Our waitress was NOT in a good mood. When we asked questions about the menu we were given "single word" answers. We ordered 2 rolls and a hibachi combo. The hibachi came out in 15 mins but the rolls did not arrive for another 30 mins. I had literally finished my entire meal, and not until we prompted our waitress until the sushi bar started making our rolls. After all that the food was SUBPAR. To top it off, our waitress tried to charge us for two orders of the hibachi combo. When we pointed out the mistake she took our check, no apology, and changed the charge. Nothing again when she stopped by the table again to drop off the check. We probably will not be going back to this place. There is much better sushi down the road. read more

This new place just opened last night where Bento Grill used to be, in the middle of Madison. I've only tried the spicy maki combo (spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon) and these are the best spicy rolls I've had in the area. There were actually large pieces of fish in the rolls, not the uniform goop filling that some places serve. For roll filling, the fish also tasted very fresh and not at all old. If anything, they could actually have been spicier. But I was very impressed. I also believe the owners are actually Japanese, and the menu is almost all Japanese food, with a little of Thai stuff in the lunch specials. But this is not one of those Chinese/Japanese/Thai places where everything is mediocre. One neat thing is there is actually an omakase option (this is where the sushi chef chooses what to serve you, hopefully from the best available fish). I'm planning to try this next, and I'd also like to try the hot food eventually. I'll update this review eventually when I've tried out more stuff, but so far I think I've got a new favorite sushi place. New additions: Yellowtail jalapeno roll. Awesome, he took a strip of fresh yellowtail, took a fresh jalapeno pepper and diced it up into the roll. Fresh fish and fresh pepper, very good. Spicy scallop roll: AMAZING. Raw scallop, tobiko, and crunchy flakes. The scallop had a sweet, ocean flavor and just the right consistency. So fresh, I've had scallop once before as nigiri and even that was not as good. Definitely recommend. Sashimi deluxe: See picture. All fresh raw fish and some octopus pieces, no egg, cooked shrimp, or crab stick. So good. Squid nigiri: They blowtorch the squid for a few seconds so it is slightly cooked, making it more tender than usual. Different, and very good. Pad thai: Tried the Pad Thai the other night for something different. Not the very best I've ever had, but pretty darn good. And I'm comparing it to Pad Thai from Thai restaurants in Chinatowns. There was lots of chicken and tofu and egg and the sauce had that special "Thai" flavor that is often lacking in cheap versions of the dish. This tasted more authentic than lots of lower end Thai restaurants. Pretty impressed. read more

This is my go-to place when I want sushi for lunch. They have a special of three rolls for $12.95 that includes miso soup and a small salad with ginger dressing. I usually get the salmon and avocado roll, the yellowtail and scallion one and the eel and avocado. Hey, I can never get enough avocado, especially when it is as creamy and ripe as this place's. The soup is ok and the salad is nothing to write home about, but the rolls are quite good. I always take out, but the space looks perfectly acceptable to eat in. Service is friendly, too. By all means, try it! read more

These guys really know what they're doing... Food is delicious. Place is very nice inside. Staff is super friendly (they even gave me a free tuna tartar dish to try). I have seen two restaurants come and go before Blue Wazabi arrived, and my first inclination was, "No way this restaurant will make it." In fact, I had been hesitant to try this new place because, what was the point, it would be gone next year. For once, I am glad to be wrong! Not only does this place have an excellent variety of nouveau sushi rolls that work (we all know that sometimes restaurants try too hard to be creative and often misfire), but their selection of classic and modern Asian dishes are enough to please the skeptics who, like myself, don't think a restaurant that labels themselves "Asian fusion" can successfully re-create the authenticity of the numerous Asian dishes available. The quality and freshness of the food are evident; in fact, I was so bold as to take my born and raised in China friend there, and he said he had not eaten food so good and reminiscent of home. I pray this place does not meet the fate of it's predecessors; it's so hard to find a great Asian restaurant that one would want to go back to again and again. Fortunately, I have found mine!!! Had a great lunch here today with my family. Everyone scattered in different directions, menu-wise, so we were able to sample sushi, udon noodles, soup, sashimi, a bento box, rolls, and salads. All were excellent. The sushi was fresh, the chirashi rice - a favorite of mine - was the right balance of vinegar, texture, and very slight sweetness. The truffle mushroom salad, while maybe not as truffle flavored as I would like, was nevertheless delicious, with tempura straws on top for an interesting crunch. We tried some of the novelty rolls (we are not maki purists), and they were quite good - interesting pairings of fish and reasonably generous portions. The only slightly negative thing was the wasabi was not spicy - a little more of a kick would've been welcome. The overall ambience was good - much improved from the odd little restaurant that used to occupy the same space. It is small, but four of us felt comfortable and not crowded. The service was excellent - the staff was attentive without feeling like they were constantly bothering us. Food came out quickly but it didn't feel rushed. While I'm not an adventurous sushi eater, I found lots of other tasty options. The spicy mango,chicken, vegetable dish was outstanding. Portions were generous and the staff was very accommodating. My wife gave her approval on the various sushi rolls she ordered. The rolled beef with scallion appetizer was terrific. I would have given 5 stars if it wasn't so loud inside , although that was attributed to a huge party of women enjoying the evening and not using their "inside voices". The avocado roll we had was great, but the I had the Beef Negimaki and Chicken Teriyaki were just average. Our recollection is that the non-sushi food was much better when they first opened. Literally the most bland ramen I've ever eaten, it was basically chewy tiny slices of pork belly with spaghetti noodles in low-quality chicken broth. They didn't even listen to my delivery instructions, and the receptionist had to hunt me down instead of them giving me a call like I had asked. The only thing I finished was the soda I bought. After tagged this place for a year, we finally got a chance to visit. It is hard to find a parking spot right outside, and it is better to park one block north(one hour or free after 7pm). It is also to make a reservation, as there are only 11 tables(8 inside and 3 outside) and a fee bar seats. There became a full house a few minutes after we sat. I can tell that staffs were overwhelmed, for 1. Forget to asking for drinks before food order, and 2. Forgot one of our appetizer before the entree. One gentleman was super busy while other girl seems to be over relax. We really appreciate that the three chefs behind the counter worked their best to feed all 20 people at the same time (too bad that almost all of us walked in together). The sushi is delicious. The dots hell crab had too many coating and over fried. I could not taste any crab flavor. Our uni is a little overpriced, $7, for one piece. But I like the quality, creamy and sweet. The soy sauce is well balanced with a little sweet in it as well. My wife had a spicy jalapeño roll, telling that his place is modern contemporary sushi. It has lobster at the bottom and spicy tuna over the roll, topping with a thin slice of jalapeño and caviar. Surprisingly, the spicy is well balanced, without overwhelming the fish. read more

This place is really good. The sushi I've had here is fresh, and I've had a few of their soups (the miso ramen and nabeyaki udon) and I've loved both soups. The broth is flavorful, and everything is cooked well (though the egg is hard-boiled instead of the typical soft-boiled). My only complaint about this place is the "spicy" sushi, really isn't spicy. I tend to like even just a little bit of a spice flavor to my spicy salmon, but I really do not taste any spice. However, the fish tastes fresh and the rolls are very nicely portioned. There is a good fish-to-rice ratio. This place is also fairly reasonably priced, especially at lunch. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys asian fusion. The service is top notch and the food is too. Whether you're and avid sushi lover or tend to go with cooked Japanese food there is something for you here. Their wide array of both types of Japanese food will leave you wanting to come back I started with the rock shrimp appetizer its was some of the best rock shrimp I've ever had and the presentation was just as pleasing. While on the phone with them, they were still taking call-in orders & still couldn't determine where our meal was.
