The bike/hiking trail was fairly flat, beautiful and shaded by trees and we made the 5 mile trip to the boat landing in no time. Ted showed up and helped up into the kayaks, gave some more instructions and we were off again! The Potomac was really calm and we took our time paddling back. It was a beautiful and peaceful trip back. Ted met us at the landing and drove us the two blocks back to the shop. Ted was super helpful, the trip was great. My experience there had been relatively positive over the past 7-8 years, but at this point I wouldn't trust them even with a basic service. I initially had a minor back-and-forth with their staff regarding incorrect charges on my receipt. While they did eventually issue a refund, I had to return shortly after for a follow-up service because the tubeless setup wasn't done correctly the first time. To make matters worse, I am reasonably certain my bike was intentionally damaged while in their care during that second visit, likely by a staff member in retaliation. Unsurprisingly, the owner has denied any wrongdoing and refused to accept any responsibility or accountability for the damage. I have been going to Haymarket Bicycles purely for convenience as they are located right down the street from me, but proximity is no longer a factor. For riders looking for trustworthy alternatives, I highly recommend Danny at Bull Run Bicycles or Chris at Blue Ridge Cyclery, both of whom have provided excellent, reliable service in the past.

REI is located in the Fairfax Govt Ctr shopping area. Staff is friendly but very picky about returns. It was obvious my products were new in original boxes with tags still on the products but this staff member inspected it with detail. I get it but her demeanor with me was not as friendly as the customer in front of me who made a purchase. Oh well, employee owned so I guess more picky.

I visited this spot this morning and had a delicious cappuccino! The barista even put a little…read morebunny on it. So I was really hoppy about finding this place. Until I entered the bathroom. And saw the "under" orientation of the toilet paper, which violates the original patent for toilet paper holders from 1891, where the paper clearly goes over the top. The "over" configuration: * prevents the roll from brushing the wall * makes it easier to grab with one hand * reduces accidental unrolling * and, most importantly, does not make decent people feel like they're living in a lawless society. What you have here is bathroom anarchy. I must admit that tile and brushed metal fixtures actually look really nice, which somehow makes the backward roll even more upsetting. It's like a beautifully plated meal served on the floor. Moreover, the ceiling contains approximately 400 judgmental eyes observing you while you attempt to live your life. The wallpaper on the ceiling (on the ceiling!!!) has a pattern based on the "evil eye" motif (sometimes called nazar), which shows up in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern design. Traditionally it's supposed to ward off bad luck or jealousy. All it does in this case is confirm the establishment has abandoned reason and at least one of the people who work has met a psychedelic mushroom. Still, the vibe everywhere else in this place is amazing and the coffees are very very good!
