Lee and I were nearby picking up a geocache while on our roadtrip to Virginia, and we decided to head inside to check things out, since we are also cyclists who enjoy browsing bicycle stores. This is a great little store. They are within walking/cycling distance of the C&O Canal, and it seems like they do a brisk business in bicycle rentals. They were a little bit disorganized at the time of our visit because they were in the middle of merchandising, but that's OK, we're not picky. They have a little bit limited selection of accessories, but I decided to pick up a frame pump while I was there. They have a nice selection of T-shirts, and I am pretty bummed I didn't give in to my desire to pick one up, they have some great designs. Perhaps next time I'm in the area, I definitely would head into here! read more

We ride the C & O and WMRT often and have on an occasion needed supplies or a quick fix. Most recently it was an emergency pedal switch out when one of us (me) brought the wrong bike shoes. The mechanic on duty was efficient and professional. The store itself is well stocked and also has some cool mementos! read more

My brakes starting going bad while riding the GAP/C&O Canal trails, so I called ahead and made an appointment for them to replace. They didn't have any in stock, but were able to order them in and have them ready to go when I arrived. The shop is located right on the trail, seems to have a good inventory, and they got us out the door in time for us to make our next lodging stop. Good overall experience. read more

I was searching for a hybrid bike for my wife. Due to Covid bicycles are in short supply and online markets are overpriced. Stopped in to this busy little shop in my hometown and was pleasantly surprised to find several bikes in stock. A great lady named Liz came over to assist me and answered all my questions. Great customer service and everyone was very friendly! So I ended up by two bikes - one for my wife and one for me! Brand new bikes and Liz insisted that I take them for a test ride before purchase to make sure I was satisfied with them. She gave me a helmet and I took both for a ride on the rail trail. Brought them home to a very happy wife!! Even got a follow up call the next day to make sure I got them home ok and was satisfied. One year free tune ups included. Great bike offerings of 3 speeds or 21 speeds. Literally right next to two different trails. Perfect place to rent a bike. Friendly staff.

My wife and I were 2 miles from the C&O Bike Shop, on the Western Maryland Rail Trail, when we came upon an older person who had damaged a front skewer and could not ride any further, and could not push the bike. I called C & O for him and asked if they might have a skewer. This call was made at 4:45. They said they probably did but it would have to be brought in. I said I'm on my way to bringit and would they wait a few minutes past the 5 pm closing time for me to get it there in case I didn't make it by 5. They said flatly "NO". No explanation, no "I'm sorry we can't" or "you might try....", just a FLAT terse "NO" Some businesses go out of the way for their customers. Some don't give a rip. I'll leave it to the reader to categorize this one. As it was, even not being in a hurry to get there I got there at 10 after. I doubt it would have killed them to stay open til 5:15 to help a biker, which is supposed to be the basis of their business. I look forward to never doing business with them. read more

The C&O Bicycle shop is located immediately adjacent to the C&O canal trail. Our bikes were filthy after riding in the rain for several days and our chains were starting to rust. Dennis thoroughly lubed our bikes, including the chains, derailleurs, and cables for less than $5 each and also pumped up the tires. He is a thoroughly nice guy, and it was a real pleasure to meet him. He also rents bicycles, including rentals to quite large groups, and runs a hostel ($20/night) next to the shop. A very sweet cat lives in the shop. read more

Stopped to buy a new bike. Guy working there could have cared less. I wouldn't buy there, regardless.

If you have very basic biking needs, this would be a fine stop. However, the staff took several minutes to even acknowledge our presence (we were the only customers) and seemed tight-lipped to help. My husband is always ready throw down ridiculous amounts of money on biking, so they missed an opportunity. He's planning a 100 mile ride and really wanted this place to be good, based on reviews. If you need last minute goo or a t-shirt (or your stihl sharpener while you're there), go for it. But don't expect much. read more

We were starting a bike ride but had a flat tire. Dropped in and they replaced the bad tube and we were on our way in less than 10 minutes. They also removed rust on our chains and were very friendly. GREAT PLACE!!! read more

I broke 2 spokes on my way to D.C. the shop fixed it right away and the prices were very low. After I left the store, I broke my derailleur about 1 hour later and got a ride back to the store. They did not carry the one I needed, but were helpful in giving me info on other stores along the trail. Guy behind the counter was very nice and chatted with my wife and I while we waited on the repair. read more

Great bicycle shop right on the C&O canal towpath and Western Maryland Rail Trail. These guys have been taking care of my bikes for the last five years and provide great value and service. Their bunkhouse is a great stop out of the rain and off the floor for those doing ridethroughs. I highly recommend stopping by if you happen to be riding by Hancock. read more

Rented a couple of bikes to ride the WMRT trail near the shop. Prices are excellent at 5.25 per hr. We covered about 10 miles in just over an hour - stopping to take photos of the old orchard plantation, the over look and the old fort. The staff was friendly, but the bike I got was "broken" the seat kept falling down when I sat on it. Finally my friends boyfriend fixed it- not the shop agent who I told several times. Also bike kept losing gears while I was riding- completely annoying. I reported the issue to the shop and they said they would check into it. Overall a fun trip and I would go again. read more

The service was awful. There were two guys at the door (who I thought were customers) who ignored me and my friend. After walking through the store for about 5 minutes went out and asked them at which point one guy very begrudgingly came in and helped us. It was like a huge favor to serve us ! read more

We used to rent bikes here before we got our own, and still bring friends there who go biking with us. The owner is very friendly and helpful and the bikes are high quality. The bike ride is great...you can go on a paved trail or on the dirt packed C&O canal....very pretty and peaceful. An undiscovered gem - traffic is VERY light compared what I'm used to on these trails. Go to Weavers for a bite before or after. read more

Used their shuttle service from Hancock to Pittsburgh to ride the GAP. Then they picked us up in Cumberland and returned us to Hancock. Great service. On time. Very helpful. Nice shop too. read more

Super friendly, family owned and run bike shop. The husband-wife team was manning the shop on a Saturday when I visited. They cheerfully loaned me a floor pump. They told me the best place in town to eat lunch, and offered to hold my bike while I ate. read more

This shop couldn't be better located as it's 3 store-fronts from the C&O Canal Towpath, making it a convenient stop for those riding the path. The service, however, was much less convenient. Getting the attention of the guy behind the counter was like pulling teeth, and once I did, he acted like he was doing me a favor rather than providing a basic service. Bottom line: great location, decent inventory, poor customer service. read more

Two of us stopped by to look at bikes with the intent to purchase. No one else in the store but us. Man behind the counter reading and another in the back and neither said anything to us after more than 10 minutes looking through the very limited inventory. After no one asking if they could help or even offering a greeting we left. They just lost $1000 plus in sales by ignoring us. read more

I'm reviewing C&O Bicycle's "bunkhouse". I stayed overnight at the bunkhouse during a bicycle trip from Cumberland, MD to Washington, DC along the C&O Canal tow path. Before staying at the bunkhouse I visited their website and saw the photos which made it look great. The photos are completely misleading. The toilets (porta jons) were filthy and smelled terrible. None of the guests used the toilets and instead we all walked over to the public toilets on the other side of the canal run by the park service. The showers were filthy and the shower curtains in threads. There must have been 50 tiny bars of soap in each shower stall. The shed where I was to park my bike smelled like it had been used as a bathroom. The floor of the bunkhouse was filthy and I hated putting anything on the floor. The top bunk had no rails and I feared I might roll off in the middle of the night. The bunks were made with composite wood and were terribly flimsy. The bunks were very narrow (24 inches wide). The small couch in the "commons" area of the bunkhouse was moldy, smelly, and stained. The website photos show a gazebo but there was none. The website also shows a "water feature" (tiny pond) but all that remains now is a big pile of stones. The plastic lawn furniture is falling apart and dirty. Everyone staying at the bunkhouse wondered how the Maryland Health Department allowed the bunkhouse to stay open. The people in the bike shop were nice enough. read more
