Love this place! I was RWH, Road-Tripping while Hungry, when I spotted the Blue Mound Cafe on the side of the highway. The parking lot was full, so I reasoned it must be good. It was! Fantastic food; friendly staff (Hi, Travis!). Everything seems to be homemade on-site. I travel a lot through Texas, so I'm something of a connoisseur of Chicken Fried Steak and let me just come out and say it: "This one is worth the stop!" They also feature dozens of desserts, either for dine-in or carry out. I couldn't decide one which, so I grabbed a couple "for later." If you're travellling Highway 287, when you get to Decatur, stop here. But come hungry, because the portions are generous! read more

So I'm eating my words today as I swore I'd never come back to this location. When you're hangry...you need to eat and the last visit we learned they closed at 3:00 on the weekends. It's a new day. Greeted warmly and were seated quickly. Mgr stopped by and asked how we're doing. Good sign so far. I ordered grilled pork chops and eggs over easy. Crispy hash browns with onions. He ordered pancake and waffles. My eggs arrived way over cooked. They were dry. Hash browns weren't crispy and the onions were grilled on the side and added to the top. They had to go back. The pork chops were delicious! Perfectly cooked, juicy and seasoned. Grits weren't crispy ok....they had an "odd" taste. The manager stopped by to confirm the order. Eggs over easy, crispy hashbrowns with onions. Got it. She returned, eggs were fine the hashbrowns were mush. Yuck. The manager should have caught it right away and never brought it back to the table. In comparison the Saginaw location far exceeds service and quality. read more

Food...I haven't had anything I didn't like. Chicken fried chicken/steak is a classic and you can't go wrong there. They have some of the best scrambled eggs. The cinnamon roll French toast is amazing! Service...the wait staff is always friendly. The ones that are always there get to know you and you become their regulars. I know it can be annoying to some, but it does suck for those who have an intolerance or celiac's Food: forgot the name of the skillet I got, but it was good. A typical breakfast skillet lol Prices: another $20 or less, per person, after drink. Coffee was okay. When you've ate at one local breakfast spot, then you've ate at all of them. They all get their ingredients from the same suppliers lol Environment: very big, lot of space. Will fit a lot of people! Service: waitress was nice. I had a "baby sprinkle" with a few girlfriends for dinner and we had been told the new Cafe was a great place to meet up! I wanted breakfast for dinner, so my order was the Berry Delight. It boasts of fresh strawberries and maybe there are fresh strawberries, but the syrup that they are in is definitely not homemade (as a heads up). I am not complaining, just have to be careful with sugar intake so I had to push some of the syrup off my French toast. Service was alright, our waitress was not rude or anything. We could sense she was ready to hurry up and be done with us or was in the middle of something else. That's okay, food arrived hot and all at the same time which was awesome! The owner came over to our table and congratulated me, that was super sweet. Oh, there is a food of the day posted on the wall in case you were wondering. This is the newest local greasy spoon in town, and it honestly started off strong -- which makes the recent slide even more disappointing. The chicken fried steak, which has been heavily promoted, came out gummy and not crispy at all. These are pre-seasoned and pre-breaded and just need to go in the fryer, so something clearly went wrong. The hashbrowns were soft and undercooked, bordering on raw. The mac and cheese somehow tasted like fish water, which was... concerning. The soft scrambled eggs were completely overcooked, and the breakfast bowl was filled with what felt like the grisly, chewy leftovers of other meats. We ended up leaving over 80% of the food untouched, which says everything. On the way out, someone at the front told my wife, "Well, you should have come and told us." But at some point, it's not the customer's job to manage quality control. When that many items miss the mark, it's a kitchen problem, not a communication problem. There's potential here, but right now it feels like it's going in the wrong direction. 2 Stars, but I hope they turn it around! read more

My first trip to this place was fine, second trip about the same. Not the greatest but a decent place for a meal. The next few trips were terrible. Chicken fried steak that was pure gristle (two orders both no good). A chili cheese dog that was so dry it could hardly be chewed. Better ones at the gas station off the rollers. Meatloaf was inedible. Mac and cheese awful. I doubt I'll be back again. I wanted to give it time to work out the kinks but it seems it has just went the opposite direction. I hope they can get back on track to be a good eatery. Decatur can use more. read more

Top notch customer service. Everything made to order. Ordered the breakfast combo. The ambiance and decor are welcoming and attractive. The music is good. And I like that an AC isn't blowing directly on me and yet the room has an acceptable temperature to it. The booths and tables aren't affixed to the floor which is a huge plus because I'm a large guy and that allowed me to enjoy a bench for a change. You will have to use the table salt which is a good thing as that prevents over-salting. There enough food in what I ordered to get two people. Very good deal. read more

I was excited to try the new location. Our waitress was friendly. Our food arrived lukewarm and my chicken fried chicken was VERY salty. Overall the were dishes were good (but not great) and seemed to be made from scratch. The desserts in the case all looked delicious (and very large portions)! My friend ordered a peach cobbler to go but when she opened it, it looked like it had been the last bit in the pan. Hardly anything there and like it had been sitting for a good while. If it was the last of the batch, she should have been warned and not charged full price. I will try this place again in a few weeks and hopefully it will be better. read more

New place with a full parking lot every time we go by so though we would try it for lunch today. Seated right away even though it was busy. Nice decor, colorful and spotless. The buzz of conversation was a good sign and then we passed by the bake counter and saw these beautiful cream pies, we bought a piece of coconut cream when we checked out. A busy server stopped and took our drink order within a minute of sitting down. They a have a large sign in the dining rooms that show daily specials, about seven of them today ranging from chicken fried steak, meat loaf, to fried chicken livers. The server took our order and my wife decided to get the chicken fried steak special and I had one of the bacon burgers. The special, for $12.99, was a huge piece of chicken fried steak with nice, crispy breading. Seasoned very well, both the meat and the breading which has a slight pepperiness to it. Mashed potatoes and a creamy gravy with roasted vegetables. She could only eat a third of it so I get some for leftovers tomorrow!! My burger was a different story. The breading which was nice, a square bun with great texture that held up to the eating process without falling apart. Vegetables were fresh and crisp, so what went wrong? No condiments at all on the burger, I had to ask for mayonnaise and there was a bottle of ketchup on the table but no mustard anywhere. The real problem was the thick, medium well hamburger patty. I could not taste any seasoning at all; no salt, pepper, butter, or anything other than the plain hamburger beef taste. It is a shame for such a well put together burger to not even have a light sprinkle of salt and pepper. I took one star for that but almost added it back for the fries. They say they are hand cut but they are thin, almost like matchstick fries. I decided not to since they are soft, with no crispiness at all. Been about four times now! Prices are really fair for the amount of food they serve! I fortunately discovered the pot roast. The first time I went and it instantly became a favorite unfortunately they don't serve it all the time so it's been a hit and miss for me when I go! I tried the CFS and it was pretty Good, but that Pot roast is definitely worth the trip! I find it nice inside and very clean! I had some good Servers, Travis and Grace! I believe that was her name! Been here multiple times since they opened. So far the favorite is the catfish on Fridays (it's all you can eat night but I only ever can eat two of these things plus sides, so the AYCE is probably not worth it for me) since it usually comes out hot and fresh from the fryer. Most of the sides are solid but the cabbage and the fried okra are personal favorites. The loaded mashed potatoes are right up there. For me... cornbread over rolls - not too sweet which is my preferred (still sweeter than I grew up with but that's the style these days). Had breakfast and it was solid and they kept the coffee coming so no complaints. Coconut cream pie is worth saving room for. Staff are very friendly and place has lots of room/clean floors. Believe it or not I also came in and had a salad once- had some strawberries and walnuts on it, enjoyed it immensely. read more

Number one rite off the bat was the TEA!! Good real tea flavor. My date had the chicken & Biscuit. Chicken was well breaded and served HOT! The biscuits were home made and fantastic. I had the turkey & gravy. Turkey was shredded with dark and white meat. It was excellent. Service was beyond excellent and they sent us with to-go iced tea. We're comming back for sure!! read more

If i were to give any suggestions it would be give a little more attention to the restrooms, not nasty but could definitely use a wipe down every hour or so. I only seen the mens restroom. It started off strong, with the pork chops being good and service good. it just didn't last long. The wing sauce was not good. Having known a couple of people that have worked here, just beware to anyone wanting to work there. Service was great. There were a ton of people and we only waited 10 minutes for a party of 3. The restaurant was very clean and tidy. Prices are average and fair. We had dinner. Everything was decent. No issues with the food at all. It just didn't stand out as amazing. We had the fried cheese appetizer, hometown burger, shrimp basket and the blue mound ribeye. If you like crispy crunchy fries, these might not be for you, they are home style. We will go back. I'm looking forward to try breakfast. read more

We came a few weeks ago and was semi-satisfied. Giving another shot this morning...total fail. Very disappointed. Eggs were not over medium...they were over done and rubbery. I could pick the two eggs up with two fingers intact. Gravy was consistent with grey-colored water with pepper. Sausage patties...also rubbery. I asked them to remake the eggs...yoke completely solid again. I was excited for a new place to eat breakfast in Decatur. Very disappointed that this does not satisfy. Sadly, I ate some because I was hungry. Our server offered and removed my breakfast from the ticket. Honestly, she was AWESOME...she gets 5 stars in my book. read more

We ate breakfast today for the first time and it was delicious. I had an omelet and my husband had the large breakfast and pancake and he loved it all. Since our meal was so good and we were going to be busy all day we got dinner to go. Unfortunately my pea salad was left out and his chicken fried chicken was sent with no gravy. Tonight we decided to put the NEW Blue Mound Cafe to the ULTIMATE TEST and we had dinner there on Opening night..... Let's just say they passed with flying colors!!! The place was VERY CLEAN and the food and service was VERY GOOD! I had the Cinnamon Roll French Toast Breakfast with bacon and Joshton had the Hamburger Steak Dinner...... It was so good that Joshton ordered a second plate!!! I also want to mention that even though the parking lot was packed, we had no problem being seated immediately and we had our food in no time! We only had two complaints: The Menu had so many wonderful options that it was hard to decide on one and we were so full that we didn't have any room for Dessert!!! Next time we'll take some to go! Blue mound cafe was a delightful taste sensation. I got the mini blue mound shuffle and it was really good, the hash browns went really good with the eggs.The servise was great fast serving took only about 10-15 minutes but the wait is worth it.The lights were a nice touch and all of the pretty signs and the fancy curtains after all we had a good time. read more

Well we have been twice and never get seated. Today we went, got our name down, were the second in line, when a waitress came and got three people that came in a good deal after us and another couple, and sat them before us. They seated three but lost four- not good business! It may be booming right now, but keep treating the locals like that and it won't be for long. 've been to Blue Mound Cafe three times now, and I don't know if it's just me or... the front staff hangin on by a thread?.. The first time I went, 4:30/5pm.. the parking lot was very clear and the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Good. I was seated quickly and given a drink. GOOD. Buckle Up. I sat there for about 15 minutes without a thing. I watched two other tables get sat, a new hire get a tour of the restaurant, and by God had some time to look at the menu. If one of the managers walked by and visited I would of said this "honestly, I have no idea, sit down, I've been here 15 minutes and I don't know who my server is, so sit with me and we'll both find out!" There were maybe four tables in the entire restaurant, some chatter going on, so there really wasn't an obvious reason for the wait. Wildly my server was RIGHT BEHIND ME AT A TABLE , chattin' Not a bad thing, but how long did you look at me before you thought man, I should probably go introduce myself?.. When her conversation got to a point I guess to get wrapped up, she waltzed right over and guess what the first thing she asked? "Did you have enough time to look at the menu?" .. if I had a dollar for every minute I did I would of gotten my meal for free, and tipped myself for probably having enough time to make it. The menu was overwhelming, it's broken down for no reason on some categories, just say you have one sandwich and have x y z as a meat option. Easy. I flipped it ten times I feel like to just to start somewhere. It all sounds good. Don't get me wrong. I asked for some recommendations because I like hearing what employees personally enjoy. Instead, she kept saying that they sell a lot of different items and that "everything is good," which wasn't very helpful. At all. Since I wasn't ready I guess with one dish, she politely gave me more time to look at the menu. haha. Did ya land on something?! I narrowed it down to a few entrées, and I'm talking about solid heavy entrees. I listed them off. and asked out of those which one she would personally recommend, and she ended up again, saying "well I sell multiple of those a day, I'm a picky eater" LIKE WHAT KIND OF ANSWER IS THAT?! I was fed up I looked up at her and said "look I don't care what anyone orders that walks through that door, I'm not asking for their opinion I'm asking for yours" the steak, pork chops, and something else wasn't it I guess, she suggested the cheeseburger would fill me up. So That's what I ordered. The burger was good, fries need help, either heat that grease up and get them crispy or take em off the menu, they're next to soggy. Needless to say, my wait to meet my server, order, and get my food was longer than it took to finish my meal. If you hadn't gotten that part yet. Get my ticket I guess and check out up front.. okay. The rude lady with the RBF in the black apron needs to either be your BOH lead or in GU, she has zero business dealing with guests. And by god, it is very awkward when the cashier asks if you'd like to leave a tip, and if so HOW MUCH?! that's crazy work. I promise you I was there atleast an hour and twenty minutes. The second time I went, I had to stand in the waiting area while several people were checking out. I personally find it inefficient to make incoming guests wait behind people paying their bills, especially when there were open tables visible in the dining room. Again the same manager (wearing the black apron) came across as very unfriendly, reassuring my original opinion. and didn't seem particularly welcoming. I was told "we'll be right with you," but again there didn't appear to be a clear reason for the delay. Would have probably been easier to just say find a seat?.. waited.. and waited. and I just walked out. wasn't gonna dive into it on a bad note again.. My most recent visit was last night. I arrived about an hour and twenty minutes before closing. As I walked up, I could see there was plenty of space inside the restaurant. However, when I got to the host stand, I was told there was a wait--even though I was dining alone which isn't the point but there was literally no one in the "waiting area" on the porch or standing in the parking lot?.. It honestly gave the impression that they just didn't want to seat anyone else that late in the evening. If the restaurant doesn't want to serve guests after a certain time, it would probably make more sense to close earlier. The restaurant itself is actually very nice inside and well decorated, and it has the potential to be a great spot in Decatur. I'm sure the food is great but I haven't ever been given the slight chance to get past the cheeseburger. Unfortunately, the service and overall guest experience have been consistently disappointing for me. After three visits, I don't think I'll be returning. And please be advised. I've been a server, bartender, a Mid Shift Lead, and A FOH trainer.. this place needs a thorough lesson in service. read more
