This is place was unexpectedly amazing! The soup and sandwiches were delicious! Highly recommend this little gem.

On most days lately I've been eating a non-meat diet. The last time I came to the Blue Heron, however, I had a mad craving for a breakfast sandwich. English muffin, sausage, and cheese. Usually not things I'd eat... but, that day they were just the thing. The staff was nice and they grilled up the sausage patty right after I made my order. (THANK YOU! I am not a microwave fan.) There is a $5 minimum for paying with plastic, which I ended up being able to easily meet when I found tomato juice in their drink fridge. (This made me happy! Most places have V8 and not Tomato and I dislike V8, love Tomato....) I rarely crave their offerings and a co-worker of mine has had a bad experience involving a mix-up on his order, but my experience so far has been good. Unpretentious and eclectic cafe located night between Magnolia and Ballard . And they were quickly around here so you can easily grab one to go and still make it to your meeting on time. Coffee is fresh and hot. The woman in charge here is working her butt off managing the drive-through with grace and taking care of inside customers as well all with a smile. I decided to take the time to eat here and enjoy the breakfast. They have a nice stream of customers coming through that all seem to be happy to be here. I learned a new Yiddish word recently: Haimish. Haimish is a comfortable, warm, welcoming place. The Blue Heron is haimish. With its mismatched furniture and dishes, its friendly Korean owners, the chess board by the window with 2 armchairs, a long couch for chilling and large round tables for projects and studying, this is a great place. The espresso is the same quality one gets in a midwest Starbucks - it'll do in a bind. The food is good, and made upon ordering. The egg and cheese muffin for breakfast is excellent. In addition to the lovely indoor seating, there is a deck with outdoor seating as well. It's a very well-considered space, ideal for meeting with friends or holing up to study for a few hours. read more

I simply have NO idea what all these people are raving about...either they're extremely high or have highly defective taste buds. Several reviews claim that the Bada Bing is to die for, so that was my first choice. It tasted like those disgusting frozen microwavable turkey phillies...tasteless turkey, highly processed veggies, mass produced generic hoagies and extruder-formed American "cheese". Not only was I not impressed, but this was honestly one of the worst hot sandwiches I've EVER had. But I did want to at least give them a second shot so I went back, tried the TBAS...same nasty turkey, prepackaged avocado spread...simply terrible. They also always have Jesus music on the radio...annoying as hell; pun intended. The one and only thing this place has going for it is the very friendly family who runs it, but that's not incentive enough for me to go back a third time and leave with another belly-full of regret. Caveat: MAYBE the breakfast sandwiches are better (I haven't tried those) but I'm really not up to going back and eating anything else that tastes like what I've had here in the past. If you want a good hot sandwich, drive 5 minutes to Other Coast in Ballard, pay a couple bucks more, and be totally satisfied that you did. read more

Today was a sad day when I moved out of Magnolia and away from my favorite deli. Multiple times a week as I was leaving home I'd call into Blue Heron and order a sandwich to pick up on my way to the office. Every time I walked through the door I was warmly greeted and handed a delicious made-to-order breakfast sandwich. So many sandwiches were eaten and I never tired of them. Here are my two favorites combos: - bagel, butter, fried egg, ham, provolone and sriracha. - croissant, fried egg, cream cheese, bacon, onion Lunches are also delicious. Of course the bada-bing is excellent, but the hot ham and cheddar on sourdough is freakishly good considering its simplicity. The sausage and egg breakfast croissant is crack in sandwich form. So bad for you, but so good! The only other thing I've had from this restaurant is a french dip, which was OK, but a little too small and expensive. I will keep going back for the crack sandwiches! read more

The name is cute! I love the idea of this place, and the location. Several people I know frequent it. It is very close to home, in a residential neighborhood, which is lovely to see. I have a tough time with harsh smells or chemicals (think hives) and every time I've been in over the course of the last five years it smells very strongly like cleaner. I was sad to visit recently with a friend (who happened to be pregnant) and we needed to leave, both because it smelled strongly like cleaner and they were not serving espresso that day. Perhaps they can switch to deep cleaning the place at night, and also use less harsh products. read more

This is my second most favorite spot to grab breakfast. I really appreciate that the service is friendly, timely, and that the sandwich is made to order. I usually order a bagel or croissant breakfast sandwich with egg, bacon, and a sausage patty. It's always perfect, warm, and extremely filling and I'm set for the morning. Other than the food, the staff is so nice and I love how comfy the atmosphere is. The service is welcoming and they always seem to be familiar with their customers. It has a nice, neighborly feel whether or not you're going through the drive-thru or eating in the cafe. Today I just tried the lunch menu for the first time and had the Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, and Avocado sandwich on light rye. It was amazing. The ingredients were in perfect proportion and it tasted fresh. I love coming here and will continue to come here for as long as I am in the neighborhood. read more

I can't begin to describe the deliciousness that is the Badda-Bing... Oh... My... SO good. If I can ever tear myself away from it I will try the Portabello because I've heard great things. Don't bother withe the french dip or the cheesesteak as the meat they use for them is the same and sub-par (kinda dry and too thinly sliced). Sometime in early 2008 they got a new menu and jacked up their prices. I think spending $12 for almost any sandwich is rediculous. So I go less these days, but sometimes I just can't resist the pull of the Badda-Bing. Oh and their breakfast sandwiches are great too, but again, at $7-8 (for a combo) a LITTLE pricey to be an every-day kinda thing. Sorry to gripe so much about the price. We often go to this place on Wednesday, for what we call Wonton Wednesday. They have great Wonton Soup that comes with a half of a turkey sandwich that is huge. And prices are reasonable. What I like best about this place is every time I walk through the door there is always a smiling face to greet me and a friendly hello. It feels like a place where you are truly welcomed and appreciated. They make everyone feel that way...you get all of that and the best sandwiches...really what more could you want at lunch? read more
