On the Miami Eater 38 List (as of 6/29/15)
I came in with high expectations for Blue Collar based on the awesome Yelp reviews, and the delicious looking menu, but sadly, left disappointed. We could have come on an off night, or ordered the wrong dishes on the menu, but the food we had was really uneven. They don't take reservations, and the restaurant isn't very big- it seats probably 36 inside and another 25 outside. It was about a half hour wait when we got there around 8pm on a Friday night. There aren't any seats or even a bar area to wait at, so you have to stand the entire time. At least the hostess can take your drink order so you can at least have a drink while you stand and wait. We were lucky enough to score outdoor seating (it was perfect weather at the time to dine outside), and tried:
-Mac (Cavatappi Pasta, Trugole, Cheddar, Parm Cheeses, $12 + Bacon $3) & Sweet Potato Plantain Mash ($6) [http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=lESHk8x-jDv3X-6yAWXRCA&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg]: The mac was just ok, but on the bland side. It wasn't as creamy as I expected, and definitely not the best version of mac I've had- skip! The sweet potato plantain mash was also just ok- more plantain than sweet potato, and the texture was very mushy. I wouldn't order this again.
-Baby Back Ribs ($21): Pretty good, and definitely one of the better dishes that we tried. The ribs had good flavorful, but were on the lean side.
-Crispy Skin Snapper (Rock Shrimp Vegetable Fried Rice, Red Curry, $23, http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=840-Au6CYuLEU0VDMWP2kw&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): I thought this dish was ok, but my friends really enjoyed it. However, I'm not a big fan of snapper, so this is probably the reason I wasn't a fan of the fish, but the red curry sauce was really good.
-BC Entree Salad (Crispy Chicken, Latkes, Romaine, Mesculin, Bacon, Blue Cheese, 1000 Island Dressing, $16, http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=7cNR5DaGTKx0r1wG2YPVUQ&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Super disappointing. They should tell people that it's crispy chicken breast, since I thought I was getting crispy chicken bites. The chicken was super dry and flavorless, and although they give you a giant portion of salad, it was pretty boring. The latkes had good flavor, but were overfried and too crispy- skip!
-New York Strip Steak (Homemade Fries, $25): My friend's husband really enjoyed this dish, and I tried some of the homemade fries (gigantic sauteed potato wedges), which were ok.
-Caramelized Brussel Sprouts ($6): Super disappointing- the brussel sprouts were undercooked, and not very caramelized tasting. Skip!
-Oreo Cheesecake ($7, http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=AgI8a78DsSVCV6GpV9CB6w&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Yuck- this is one of the worst cheesecakes I've had in a while. It tasted like they used Neufchatel cheese or ricotta since it had a really dense texture, and wasn't sweet at all. I wouldn't order this again.
If they have Chicken Parmesan as a special that night, make sure you order it! I saw that another table ordered it and it looked amazing, AND it was a giant portion to boot. Service was pretty good- we had a really energetic kid who wore a T-shirt that had a tuxedo look printed on it, which I thought was entertaining. Overall, the food was really uneven for me, and I don't think I would come back based on my experience. Maybe if they had the chicken parmesan that night.. Parking around here is really difficult since there isn't much street parking available (and not really anywhere you want to leave your car), so valet is your best option. read more
