Great little restaurant in Oceanside. We were planning on doing the 3 capes drive, and dining options are a a little limited in the area, but this place is a bit of a hidden gem. There was a bit of a wait, but that's to be expected, it's not that big of a restaurant. We were seated outside in the back...weather was perfect for it. Husband got the beachcomber, daughter got the French toast, and I got the crab cakes and eggs. Everyone's breakfast was pretty good. Service was also really good. If you're in the area, definitely recommend this place to stop in and have a bite! Also, just to note, cell service was pretty spotty. Parking is across the road. It was foggy when we drove in, but it burned off during breakfast, and the views were gorgeous. read more

The sandwich is served on toast with tomato and avocado and an overly sweet rich sauce; sauce overpowered the crab flavor. Cute little place in Oceanside. I loved the interior, tons of old pictures and decor. We stoped in for breakfast, had the pancakes and crab cakes. Both were pretty good, nothing super impressive. Service was very fast, especially for how busy they were. There was a decent amount of tables inside (and I think a patio), but I imagine it gets busy. I would love to come back for lunch or dinner. My eggs were the only thing good with my meal. My chicken fried steak was way overdone and had no flavor. My toast was rock hard and cold. The potatoes were overdone and hard. Host said our food would be late because the health department inspector was there. I will not return. read more

Had a wonderful breakfast with my bestie at the Blue Agate. The place is very small with lots of ocean view windows. Lots of history on the walls of Oceanside. Tables are quaint with small jars with flowers on the table. We got there a little after 11:00 when they switch from breakfast to lunch. Even though it was past time, they still let me order breakfast. I got the chicken fried steak and it was delicious. It was a good portion but not too big and the steak was thin and crispy with peppery white gravy. Very delicious. The home made fried potatoes were really clean and cooked well. At first I just ordered sourdough toast but then I saw them deliver a big fluffy biscuit to another table. I asked the waitress if it was possible to get one of those instead if it wasn't too late. I offered to pay the difference but she said it was no problem. This was a light and freshly baked with jam and butter. Don't skip this if you go there. The company I was with, the view, the food and the service made this a highlight of my trip. Did I mention the beautiful beach is right across the street? Do not miss out on this amazing place. These are the nicest people! Great service, willing to chat when not busy. The food was great. I tried the Blue Agate fries which have cheese and pulled pork. The sauce was a little rich, but works with the fries. The chowder was good (but a little heavy on the black pepper). The fish tacos were awesome. And I love the berry lemonade. Nice friendly establishment that was one of the few restaurants open in the area. We had to wait 30 minutes for the breakfast menu to close out before they started serving lunch, but they communicated that very well I won't hold it against them. We had the crab cakes, steamer clams, and grilled rock bass. The steamer clams were a nice portion, but still had some sand in it. However there was a nice mix of onion and tomato broth plus buttered toast that it was quite satisfying. The crab cakes were a bit small for my taste and it felt like it could have used some more crabs. It was also a bit dense. The grilled rock bass was great - they ran out of rice but the side salad sub was not a bad choice. Overall, a solid place in the area! read more

Ordered the pulled pork tacos. The sauce on the pulled pork was super watery and tasted quite strongly of vinegar. The soft taco shell essentially disintegrated from too much liquid. They were inedible. My husband ordered the plain burger. Was pretty average. None of the prices online have been updated in years. The total for the order came out much higher than expected when we went to pick it up. They didn't really seem concerned, just said they aren't technologically advanced enough to keep the online prices up to date. We won't be back. It was all very disappointing. read more

On our last morning in cozy Oceanside, we decided to try this local place near the beach access. It's small and weathered, but was a great experience. Our waitress and who we presume to be the owner was very friendly and shared even history of the place. We ordered a coffee, the country benedict, country fried steak, and an orange juice. The food was delicious! Huge portions. I will mostly think about those potatoes, which were both soft and crispy. The owner was proud to share everything was made from scratch, and you can tell. The orange juice did get missed in the order, but we didn't mind and the owner was kind enough to take it off our bill. The service was quick and friendly. My husband got clam chowder and said it was some of the best he's ever had. I ordered a chicken melt and the pesto sauce that's made in house was phenomenal. I definitely enjoyed the food here! Blue Agate is a small cafe right next to the beach, so you can fuel up and head over a few feet to the beach! The crab cakes are excellent, though I think they need more crab in them, and I think it would be amazing if they had a lemon glaze on them. But overall it's delicious. The breakfast burrito is excellent. Stuff with plenty of protein, and the size is pretty big, so you might want to share it if you eat less. Great coffee, I take it black wish my favorite breakfast places in Portland served this! If came in a large cup and kept offering me more. I was the only one there at 9am Monday, friendly waitress suggested the sausage omelet for savory or French toast for sweet over my third choice which you "can get anywhere" bacon and eggs. They turned it into scramble at my request, it was very good, but the potatoes were what I saved for my last bite.The first bite seemed a bit dry, not greasy (were they even fried?) but I really liked them. I also got toast and the jam was good, only one half piece was brown, not really worth $4 and I had plenty of food. As I finished another couple arrived. If you are using google don't turn right and if you do then take the first left (it did not look like much so I took the next one which was right next to it, and ended up on a tour of the town, the street was one way, and the next one was block by construction trucks, the third was ok but google wanted me to go the wrong way on a one way street! Luckily I had downloaded the maps here because there is no cell (or at least Verizon). When I got back I parked in front of the restaurant so not sure what is back there. Started with the Shrimp Vera Cruz: small shrimp, avocado, red onion, tomato, cilantro & lime: incredibly fresh & the tortilla chips were thicker and able to handle scooping up that deliciousness! I ran out of chips so dumped the rest on top of my salad! Shrimp & Crab Salad: sweet shrimp & crab on top of a beautiful bed of mixed greens, celery sticks, tomato & cucumber slices and a hard boiled egg. The only dressing choices were ranch, bleu cheese, and some type of berry vinaigrette. I prefer a seafood dressing similar to 1000 Island but less sweet and with a kick. The ranch reminded me of Uncle Dan's (one of my favs). Only downside is there isn't any handicap access. Considering, the entire town is built on a cliffside, not surprising. In general, handicap access on the coast is challenging. Also parking for the cafe is quite a challenge. For some reason the town has blocked off all parking across the road in front and there's barely room for 3 cars to park on the road behind. read more

We were looking forward to our chance to eat a Blue Agate Café. The day we came they did not have any crab. All crab is prepared fresh and they did not get their catch in time for us to enjoy it. They have an ample menu that we choose from and found things we liked. Fish and chips - 3-4 stars - Nothing special. Not much to complain about. It's fish was fine. The fries were average. Fish sandwich - 5 stars - They provided two large pieces of fish in the sandwich. Both orders we had they both chose to take one fillet off and felt it was enough. The tartar sauce was excellent and paired great with the fish. Crab and shrimp melt - 5 stars - No crab so it ended up being a shrimp melt. He really liked it but he rarely eats slow enough to taste his food. Shrimp tacos - 5 stars - two tacos with a great sauce. She really enjoyed it. Had no complaints and had room to help others finish off their plates. Agate Fries - 3-4 stars - they were a mess. Very saucy pulled pork over a bed of fries. We do a lot of smoking of pork in the family and felt it was below par. Fries were average. Pulled pork sandwich - 3 stars - There is one in every family. You go to a restaurant by the coast and the order something they can get at home. He liked the sandwich but not as much as others he has had closer to home. A very convenient place right next to the beach. The pricing seemed a little on the high side but about right for the area. We were staying at the cottages next door. Our room shared a wall with this place. Was hoping to sleep in on my birthday weekend mini vacation but at 7am the screaming began as they started to prepare for the Sunday breakfast crowd. It was so loud I was thinking damn, why are they screaming for over an hour? Since I was then fully awake, and the location obviously convenient, we went in a few minutes after they opened. Apparently it was bring your kids to work day. Two young boys were sitting at a table playing a game and were very loud. I was relieved it wasn't the staff I had heard all morning screaming. We ordered French toast, biscuits and gravy and a side of bacon, extra burnt. The French toast was very good, the biscuits and gravy were also pretty good but French toast was better. The bacon came out not so crispy, I thought it looked good honestly but my honey likes it burnt so he sent it back. I think it offended the chef because I could hear him make a comment. It came back burnt alright. My guy said it was the first time he had burnt bacon that didn't taste like bacon. It was a small cafe, seats filled quickly, small patio in back for extra seating which also disturbed the peace in my room that I was trying to enjoy on my vacation. Overall food was good, service was good, but I hope the kids was a one off for the sanity of anyone sleeping next door. read more

What a absolutely wonderful experience!! We were going to get something to go because we had our dog and were worried about it being too hot. Kathy our wonderful server said that we should sit on the patio so I checked it out and it was a peaceful little back yard space with a separate entrance that was easy to access. We ordered their lemonade, clam chowder, hamburger with my favorite kind of fries and the crab melt sandwich with a fresh green salad and yummy homemade blue cheese dressing. The chowder was one of the best I've ever had. Not too thick, a little peppery and herby but not overpowering and the tender potatoes were the perfect size. I wish I wouldn't have put the oyster crackers in because it didn't need it. My burger was juicy with fresh veggies and I really like the small crinkle cut fries. Hubby's melt was unlike any other too. It had some kind of fresh pesto that was TDF and his salad and dressing was special too. On top of all of that we met most of the staff and they were wonderful! What a nice memory for us and we plan on making more any time we get to that area! read more

This cafe is the best. We were greeted by the mom of the owners and treated so nicely, it made my day. We ordered the fish tacos, donuts, blackberry shortcake with ice cream and whip cream and a kids cheeseburger with fries. The tacos were to die for. Delicious fresh rockfish with a cilantro/dill sauce and all the beauty you see in this picture. Baby swallows were being fed by mama right next to our table which was outside in the sunny back deck. The food is delightful, flavorful, filling and absolutely delicious. Pictures, from the third visit because it was too good to wait the first two times. They are the prime spot for a snack/meal after working up an appetite right off the beach. They are open for breakfast at 8am and lunch, but closed for dinner. However the other cafe down the street opens at 3pm for dinner. They have take out and dine in, as well as outdoor seating. There is a path on the left side of the entrance/building to the back for four legged families to still grab a bite. When you walk in they have a fire going to stay warm and you order at the register near by for take out. They have sanitizer available before receiving a menu, masks are required, and they even use a new pen each customer. Given a normal beach day, the food is worth every penny. They even serve it with garnish. It's the little touches that make it great and take it to the next level. The portions are large and filling and the quality of food is fit for a 5 star restaurant. The biscuits are homemade, the French toast taste like it's made with all the love and a little sugar, the potatoes are peppered for the spice sensitive, the garden omelette add bacon is Devine, and the burritos is a definite win. The scrambled eggs left a little more to be desired - flat instead of fluffy. At the time of our visit, the hostess was wonderful! Unfortunately the cooking staff in the kitchen did not take masks very seriously and had them under their nose while cooking. Depending on your take on COVID that could put a high risk person at huge risk - lose a star. read more

This place had decent reviews and we wanted to like this place but it was wayyyyyyyyy overpriced. There was quite a bit of people there so we waited around 10 mins for our seats, which isn't too long of a wait but it took a while for them to bring us water and take our order, and the food took forever to come. We try to be understanding of the amount of people there but the way they operate just isn't efficient. The kitchen was slow and food was just sitting on the counter. On top of everything the food was mediocre at best, we got one pound clam steamers, fish and chips, and a crab and shrimp melt sandwich. The fish and chips was decent but the clams tasted old. The sandwich had real crab meat in it but it was dry, and the fries that came with it tased like stale McDonald's fries. The beach and location was the only good thing about this place. Unique Atmosphere I really felt apart of the town walking into this Cafe. I felt like a local and they treated us like one also! Good place to grab some brunch and head to the beach right across. Biscuits and Gravy were delish. Homemade goodness. My boyfriend and sister got the flap Jacks, super fluffy and perfect. We had a group of 6 and all left stuffed and happy! The only thing I do recommend is calling ahead if you have a group larger than 3, it's not as spacious but it is worth it! read more
