Service was slow, but it's to be expected on a Saturday afternoon as they were packed. They did forget my appetizer and served our coffee in dirty looking mugs (there was a lipstick stain on one). The French Toast was sadly lukewarm and the pulled pork breakfast tacos were meh, they've impressed me before so I don't know what changed with the quality. In that time, we only saw our server once and never got our food. When paying for the drinks, not one apology for the wait or service. I really think something is wrong with this place. It used to be one of our favorite brunch places but the food is just not as good as it used to be. It seemed to take long than usual to get served. We did have a great server but considering that the place was not very busy, our order took too long. The brisket was very salty and everything else was very mediocre. I wish this place could have lived up to the expectations set by previous reviews but unfortunately it did not. My biggest complaint is the lack of urgency by staff. Everything took forever, form taking our order down to delivering the bill. Even watching the cook make a single empanada was like watching paint dry. Also, as a former health inspector, please wear gloves when handling food, especially if your kitchen is in view to the public. We also happened to see a server that had once worked at another restaurant we like to frequent, and he/she exhibited the same lackluster attitude from the previous place. The food was a bit bland, as it seemed every dish was missing just that one thing to take it over to a 4 or 5 star review, not taking poor service into consideration. We ordered the ahi tuna ceviche which was a mix of fresh tuna, avocado, mango chunks, and pico de gallo. This was served with a side of fried flour tortilla-like chips and lettuce. The avocado was brown, and lacked presentation and flavor. I ordered the Block Burger which was delicious. The patty had a nice crust, seasoned with salt so as not to overwhelm the flavor of the beef. I just wish the fries were a bit more fresh. My wife ordered the shrimp tacos, which was a big disappointment and something I could easily make at home for half the price. The shrimp was seasoned with Old Bay Seasoning and grilled, covered in slaw, pico de gallo, and a creme sauce. It was just boring and the shrimp could have been seasoned better and cooked slightly longer giving it a bit of char, which brings out the flavor more. After dinner we happened to speak to an ex-employee who said that the place is under new management and not as good as it once was. I would believe him based on our experience. I would love to give this place a try again but I am hesitant based on the lack of customer service we experienced. And if I'm gonna fork over $50 for dinner, I'd better be won over by the food or the service, which in this case it was neither. 3-stars just cuz I think that given just a few adjustments to the recipes, and a happier more attentive staff, this place can be so much better. read more

I've lived near Block for over a year now and have always heard about how good it was but just never went. I'm glad I finally did! Food: my friend and I split a Cuban and a pastrami sandwich and both had simple salads to go along with it. Both sandwiches had great flavor but j in believe the Pastrami won this battle over the best as the slaw and meat were just packed with flavors and worked really well with the salad. We also had the jalapeño poppers wrapped in bacon for an appetizer and it was absolutely delicious. Atmosphere: Very modern, elegant yet still laid back. The greenery near the front as well as the wooden tables really made for an awesome atmosphere along with what seems like a really great selection bar. The outside patio also seemed really great for spring time. Price: $$ - between two people I spent about $42. Really good for a nice lunch or dinner date. Overall, I highly recommend. This is a good go-to spot when we are on Mesa. The.food gets to you quickly and is piping hot. I haven't loved everything I've gotten here but I do love, love thier burgers. They are always cooked how we ask, just, seasoned, inventive, and satisfying. The cauliflower used to be the bomb! But this order was gummy and weird. However, I will give them another go. Other always good staples are the pretzel, hummus, and avocado toast (hello brioche!) The fish and chips were really tasty. Slightly under salted, but an easy fix. The fries are eat-until-you-drop good. The service usually has younger servers who might not know everything (like the beer list) but they are very attentive and we have always felt very well taken care of. The bathrooms are always clean, the atmosphere is fun and airy and we recommend the overall experience of Block. read more

We were desperately looking for a nice place to eat with outdoor space on a Sunday at 7:30 PM. Unfortunately, most nice restaurants were closed, and the few opened were booked up. Block was not especially attractive looking at its Yelp profile, but we were very pleasantly surprised. They offer a lovely indoor space; we choose outside because of COVID. It is nicely set up with lights and cushions on the outdoor chairs. The area is fenced off, hiding the unattractive stree, also reducing the noise. Our waitress was quick and friendly. Food did take some time to come, but we did not mind as we were not in a rush. I started with a La Pama cocktail; it came in a large glass, not a cocktail one - it was more of a mixed drink. It was excellent and refreshing, especially after a long day of hiking in the heat. They have a great selection of beers; that's the place's specialty. I had a Salty Lady, a sour-salty beer. I know most people might not like it. I found it extraordinarily original and super tasty! My friend got the IPA on tap and was happy. I started my meal with the Citrus Avocado Salad; the ingredients were fresh and tasty. Not the sad, plastic-looking salad you may find in most restaurants. My friend had the Caprese Salad. Tomatoes did not have a lot of flavors, but he enjoyed the basil a lot. I had the Bar Nachos for my main dish, which was terrific. The pulled pork is fantastic, and I got a reasonable portion. My friend took the Block Burger, and he could not stop saying how tasty it was. We also took a desert, walking in nature is using up a lot of calories ;-) I took the Churros, I'm not too fond of cinnamon, but it was reasonably powdered. I did not like the chocolate deep; it tasted like a cheap chocolate dip. My friend had the Caramel Custard, which was the highlight of his meal. The cream was quite liquid, topped with sea salt and brownie at the bottom. My friend is highly picky with desert (France is quite good at deserts), so kudos to the cook. I enjoyed this place, and we could see it is pretty popular as people kept coming but seems to be rejected as they were getting out right away. Even though the place advertises they are opened until 9 PM, it seems they start refusing customers around 8:15 PM, be sure to get there early. My husband and I were passing through El Paso on our road trip from Dallas. SO HAPPY we stopped by. We had our dog with us and she was allowed to sit with us out on the evening patio. Food and service was SO good here. I had the tuna ceviche and a side of tomato soup. OMG. Fantastic! The wonton chips are a plus as well. My husband got the fish and chips, which he demolished. Its a very nice place to meet up with the gang for a meal. Service - Attentive and quick. My friend and I were quite indecisive, but the server was very friendly and helpful. Had the opportunity to go with a big group of people and wasn't sure if it was apt for review but decided to review only the food to be fair. There was one waiter for our group of 25 who the service lacked because of that. Having said that I will only highlight the food. I ordered the Honey pecan chicken salad sandwich. The cibiatta was tough. But the inside was delicious. I also had the bar nachos and the serving was very much sharable with probably 3 people. It really was good. I ordered the Mile's Away drink (ketel vodka, guava, passionfruit, pineapple and lime) which was quite refreshing. I would return for the nachos. If you live in El Paso or simply visiting, don't be a dummy like me and sleep on this place. I can't believe I've passed this place forever and never swung by. My sister (she's one of the biggest foodies I know) was hangry and I was right behind her. Although I have a list of places I have to eat at every time I visit, she was adamant about coming her. More like I had no option since she was driving, but I digress... Now Block is within short driving distance of UTEP and is pretty close to all the bars on Mesa. This spot is actually great for a birthday dinner or celebration and a quick transition to the local nightlife within that area. Not only do they have a cool outdoor patio which is dog friendly, but the inside is really nice and very open. I kinda felt stupid not giving this place a chance sooner because HOLY COW, their beer selection is crazy, and I saw a few beers that I hadn't seen in ages. Whoever is the beer/bar manager needs to be my friend because they have some damn good taste. My sister and I decided to feast like royalty and ordered a ton of appetizer plates. Because when you're hungry and can't decide it's obvious you just order half the menu. Some of the plates we ordered was the ceviche (must order, seriously it's a large helping and the tuna was seasoned perfectly), giant pretzel (still drooling over the cheese fondue they make in-house and the IPA mustard seed), burrata (the ricotta cheese within the mozzarella was nicely balanced), and the hummus (great for sharing). I know we ordered an appetizer that had a Mediterranean style bite with the use of grape leaves but I'm drawing a blank. Our server was on-point and was very friendly. I really enjoyed my time here and look forward coming back on my next visit. I really liked this restaurant before the pandemic. I have not had a good experience at the restaurant since then. A group went to brunch this Sunday, and the service was terrible. The server was good, but he had to cover way too many tables. I ordered the brisket eggs benedict. The brisket was good but he eggs were basically hardboiled. One person ordered a Belgium waffle. The waffle did not have fruit, whipped cream and powdered sugar as described in the menu. Just a sad waffle with a small container of syrup. Another person ordered huevos rancheros. His order arrived 30 minutes after our orders arrived. Also, we had to wait a significant period of time for coffee because they had to brew more coffee. How do you run out of coffee for a brunch? I hope the restaurant does better, but will not return for a while. read more

This place is okay. The location is great and they have private lot parking, plus their outdoor seating area is lovely, but I won't really go out of my way to come back. I started with the Veggie Empanadas. I was very excited about them because....well, they're empanadas. Although they were savory, they tasted a bit too sweet for me? I guess it's because of the corn in them, but I thought it was a little weird. They'd be much better if they had a bit of spice to them, because the pastry part was really good. For my meal I had the Roast Turkey sandwich, but without the Havarti. They put plenty of Turkey on it, but it was just regular cold cuts, nothing crazy or super flavorful, but the cranberry bread and the roasted tomatoes were lovely! Much better than the tomato soup I got as my side, which I am glad was so small because it was super watered down (though I think it was a cream of tomato soup). This place is so cute, so hip and chic and all the words that can describe a really cool place. They have a great variety of beers I only tried the mule (ginger beer is one of my favorites) and it was so good I think it was called Bunny something lol. I was in a date and the ambience was just perfect the server was so nice and kind she suggested the drinks and was making sure that we had everything that we needed. The tacos were vegetarian more like vegan because I preferred them without queso DELICIOUS! a little bit too spicy but spicy good! It was a big plate I couldn't finish them; my date ordered a burger that to be honest looked like my first paycheck: AMAZING! he said it was really good flavorful and juicy. They have a nice patio area that I definitely want to have brunch in maybe on a nice spring morning; definitely will be coming back here: the ambience the food and the servers were all excelent!! Great food, terrible service. INHOSPITABLE I went here the other night for my birthday. We had plans for dinner and a show. When I arrived, I asked one of the staff if I could sit outside. They told me to seat myself. There were no heaters and people frequently came out to smoke near us. REPREMAND I was out there for a while, and when nobody came to take our order, I went inside to ask if I should go somewhere to place the order myself. They reprimanded me for not having notified the correct person that I was going to sit outside. INEXPERIENCE I told the server I liked bourbon and asked for a drink recommendation. She said they offered two, I chose the Penicillin. I asked her for dinner recommendations. She said the tacos were popular. I wasn't surprised that she couldn't offer me a drink recommendation that she'd tried herself. Not everyone is into bourbon and it was possible that the server didn't drink. But when it came to the dinner recommendation, I expected something based on personal experience. I was left with the impression that they had never tried the food themselves. DINNER I ordered Penicillin and the fish and chips. My partner ordered the vegan tacos and a VIRGIN margarita. My partner isn't a frequent drinker but I suspected she wanted the shaved ice and salted rim so I made sure the waitress had those details as well. When the server brought out the drinks, she had her fingers around the rim. When you serve someone a drink, you should hold the glass close to the base. The Penicillin was served with a single large ice cube which made for a lovely presentation. The Laphroaig was tempered by the citrus and made for a lovely drink. I don't usually go in for either the Laphroaig which I usually find to be too smoky or the lemon but this drink a treat. I'd recommend it. The fish and chips were delicious. They were hot and perfectly crispy. The fish was mild and delicious as were the fries; the perfect drinking companion. ALCOHOL My partner realized, half way through her drink, that her drink wasn't virgin after all. The server's response was "oops". Without a designated driver, we had to scrap the rest of our plans for the night. We took an Uber home and arranged for someone to come back to get our car that night. She's breast feeding so we had to make other arrangements for feeding later that night. I don't know why the server didn't write our order down. I'm pretty sure that would have avoided the situation altogether. SUMMARY In summary, the food and drinks are lovely. The kitchen and bar staff seem great. Perhaps the servers are new and just need a little training. If this place gets that sorted out, then I have no doubt that this place could be great. read more

Our server checked on us twice, and we said we were not ready yet. However, she rolled her eyes and proceeded to walk away. I'm confused as to why us enjoying each other's company would be annoying to her :( Finally, we eventually did order. The food was great. However, our server never came back to check on us after delivering the food. She would go to the table near us and not even make eye contact with us. Went in for beers and dinner based off the reviews. I sat at the bar and was greeted with menus and water. The bartender was very nice and suggested several beers styles to my liking. I ordered a local IPA and their shishito peppers assuming they would come out quickly. Well, the app was definitely not out quickly and definitely disappointed because they were not hot to temp and were swimming in sauce. I ordered their prime rib French dip sandwich that was just meh. The accompanying French fries were not crispy, but yet saggy and way over salted. I'm giving three stars based on service and the beer selection, but the food is definitely two out of five stars. I visit Block and Table regularly during lunch and it is often good but mostly inconsistent. One never knows what to expect, especially when it comes to service. Understandably, the pandemic has thrown restaurant management for a challenging loop, with many servers sitting out the pandemic in favor of more lucrative federal assistance programs. Be that s as it may, training and oversight are normal responsibilities of managers so inexperienced, untrained and distracted servers shouldn't be tolerated even though good help is scarce. Such was my experience last week. Our Inexperienced, untrained, and distracted server ghosted us after we received our order. Being seated outside required me to go inside to find our server - for water refill, for napkins, and finally (30 minutes after we finished lunch), to ask for the check. Food is pretty consistent and varied menu has something to please everyone, if you have plenty of time to kill and you're patient enough to endure the occasionally spotty service . read more

This was my second visit to Block - Table & Tap, and it was just as great as the first time! I LOVE their beer selection, bunch on draft, and tons on bottles and cans too. They also allow you to have some samples before you settle on a beer, which is nice since there's a lot of beer names I've never heard of. The food is also phenomenal! We over did it when ordering but plowed right through. We got the cheese board, great selection of cheese and all delicious. And we also got the empanadas, I wish it had more than 3 in the appetizer and made a full blown meal out of them! I'd totally eat that. My wife got the mussels in butter and wine sauce, they are so delicious we would get two if we didn't want to try all the other yummy things. I got the vegetarian tacos, minus poblano peppers and it was still so spicy! But delicious, worth the burn. Did add some ranch to tone it down, but keep in mind I'm a weakling when it comes to spicy things. Our friend got one of the burgers, and it got the seal of approval from a 10 year old picky eater as well, so you know it's good! As for beer, I went with the Knotty Brunette Ale, and it was all kinds of good. Dark, but not quite a stout, rich in flavor, and no bitter after taste. WOW!!!!! I can not believe how lucky I was to find this restaurant on Yelp. We were traveling to El Paso for a wedding and looked up restaurants in the area. I found this restaurant looked at a picture of the menu and said let's try it. Do not be deceived by the looks of the outside, once you walk in the doors it's a whole different ballgame. The atmosphere is really nice our waiter was really fun and the food was outstanding. We took some of the recommendations from the waiter and he was spot on. I like buying T-shirt's from places that I like to advertise for them and while they weren't prepared to sell merchandise they did sell me one. Very nice people and they should start selling shirts. It's been about three years since I last visited. Last time I loved the brunch and the vibe! Today was eh. We were one of only three tables in there ( and the first customers of the day). I can't put my finger on it, but it just wasn't the same as I remember. The menu was different (no brunch--but it is a weekday [?]) and my plate was just ok. I've been here twice with 2 very different experiences both times. Averaging out a 4 and 2 star review. The first time I came after work with a friend to enjoy a beer. I got the French dip sandwich and remembered it being very good. The atmosphere was great, and it was very promising. More recently, I went in for dinner on a weeknight. It was around 8pm, and they looked like they were about to close (they close at 10 pm). I was excited because they had Dogfish head 90 min, which is one of my favorite beers. We stated out with the ceviche and the buratta+bread. The ceviche was lacking... it didn't have any kick. It seemed like it was just tuna and avocado. The buratta+bread would have been fine, but when our server brought it out she informed us there was no fig jam. She didn't ask if we wanted an alternative, she just set it on the table. If she had offered something else or marked it off, it probably would have been fine: I ordered the brisket tacos. They looked good until I noticed a hair in one of the tacos. Not a huge deal, things happen. But it just seemed to fall in line with the rest of how the evening was going. The waitress was kind enough to take them back and have them re made. She apologized and offered us 10% off. I think that came to like $6 or $7 off. I probably would have preferred just another beer though, which would have had more value than the 10% off.
