Our server Bri was wonderful....until she asked my husband and I (we both wear wedding rings) if we wanted separate checks. I found that rather offensive, since we were obviously together. Wow- came here for restaurant week in February and was blown away. Some BBQ places have good meat, but not great sides. Blind Box has it all- Mac and cheese, beans, coleslaw, and the meaaaaats. We did have to wait for a bit since it was busy during restaurant week, but once we were seated service was prompt. The only downside was that they brought my husband's meal out late. There are booths, high top tables and larger tables. It has a sports bar type environment with TVs and is casual. Blind Box refers to what is submitted to judges at BBQ competitions- boxes are numbered and "blind" so that judges don't know the name of the BBQ team whose meat or sides they're sampling. read more

When in greater Kansas City, you have to have BBQ! My better half wanted sushi. I talked him in to Blind Box instead. He had a couple of ales and some sort of burger that came with a horseradish sauce and Mac and cheese as his side. I didn't pay much attention to what he ordered EXCEPT for that sauce. More on that later. I ordered a plate that came with burnt ends and brisket. They serve their selection of sauces in portion cups. It was about 10 times the amount of sauce I would have needed. It was nice to be able to taste them all. I did not care for the sweet and spicy (weird too because that combo is usually my go to sauce). I liked their original and the mustard based sauces. Mixing them made them both better. As for my entree, it was solid BBQ. I really enjoyed the burnt ends. They had great flavor, awesome bark, and were still juicy. The brisket was good, thank goodness not too thinly sliced. I prefer my brisket cut on the thicker side. I selected street corn and onion strings for my sides. I told our server I was torn between the onion strings and the beans. She steered me to the onions. I do love me some beans and I kinda wish I had gone that direction. Nothing against the onion strings, they were good, as was the street corn. I was surprised when the street corn arrived on the cob. I was expecting a bowl even though that's less "authentic". The corn was perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned. I would order again. Remember that horseradish sauce? Let me just say, burnt ends plus horseradish sauce equals heaven. Try it. Trust me. Service was prompt and pleasant if slightly distracted. We arrived at 3:30 on a Monday. I have never left a review before but this was the worst experience we have ever had. We don't get out much because life is so expensive. When we go out we want to enjoy ourselves. The server said she would fix it. I recently tried Blind Box for the first time. While I liked it, it felt like a new bbq business, where they haven't really made the bbq experience "theirs" yet. The meat was cooked well and I loved the smoked artichoke spin dip. But the bbq street corn, while beautiful, was mediocre as were the sauces. The signature sauce tasted like generic. Two of the other sauces tasted like they were getting close to having a good recipe for them. I will say the mustard based sauce was dang good. I'll probably try this again read more

I'm a little late posting this, but the final stop of our restaurant week adventure was Blind Box BBQ in Shawnee. We arrived a little before our reservation time, but were seated immediately. The restaurant was decently busy, but not overcrowded by any means, that being said our service was a bit slow. Our server looked like ours was the only table in that section he had, but that he had other parties or maybe a large party in an adjacent room. Other than being hungry, we weren't in a rush so it wasn't a huge deal. Taking advantage of the restaurant week menu, we ordered the winter wedge salad, bqq wontons, a competition combo, and the smoked Corn Beef Reuben. The winter wedge salad was what you would typically expect, but what set it apart from other wedges was the smokiness of the bacon and the seriously good homemade bleu cheese dressing. The BBQ wontons we're probably the best I've had from any local BBQ spot. And the chili sauce with them was spot on. The smoked Reuben, like the smoked bacon in the salad, stood out as unique due to its smokiness and was so huge we took almost half of it back home. It was served with fries and we had overheard one of the other servers bragging about the ranch, so we asked for a side to go with them. Like the bleu cheese it is made in house and definitely worth asking for. I ordered the competition combo because it had the ribs, which is what I really wanted to try. And they were superb. The menu said it came with 2 but my plate had a 3rd and at the end there were 3 completely clean bones on my plate. Perfectly cooked and while there was sauce on them, they weren't overly wet or messy and it was there to highlight the rib, not hide it. I enjoyed the burnt ends and brisket but the ribs were the star. All of that came with a side and I chose their BBQ beans which were spectacular. I love mine on the sweet side and they delivered. The quickest way to my heart is through my kid's stomach. And boy Blind Box did just that. I seriously love the open space and quick service. One of the first things I always do when we sit down is to put in my son's food order. That way we can eliminate any hangry meltdowns. Owen, our server, was great about it and very patient as we figured out what he wanted. He also made very good recommendations which I appreciated. We arrived today (Father's Day) without a rsvp and they were able to seat us in the patio area within 10 mins. We quickly placed my sons food order, followed by drinks. Then we were able to put in our meals after we were settled. My son's dinner came out pretty quickly and his kids cup came with a lid. He had ribs & fries and loved it! Butchers Block- yes oh my gosh it was so delightfully good. There were four different cheeses: a blueberry one, apricot one (totally guessing), a green one and Gouda! The selection was so tasty!! For meats.. sausage, brisket and also ribs. And then surrounding it was a selection of fruit! My son loved munching on the fruit which was a huge plus. The only thing that could make this even better was if it had some pickles in there. Combo #1- also yes!!!! It came with sausage, burnt ends and baby back ribs. We had sweet potato fries (very crispy! ), bbq corn (a twist on Mexican corn), and onion rings (crispy and well seasoned). I really love the patio. It's relaxed and very spacious. We had our newborn in a stroller parked next to our table and there was plenty of space to walk around it without bumping into it. At one point, I also rocked her back and forth in the stroller while eating (yay for multitasking moms!). I also nursed her while at the table without feeling like I'm giving everyone a show because of how widely spaced the tables were. I just can't speak enough about how kid-friendly this restaurant is. I am so glad we remembered this place for Father's Day. What a treat. The whole family left satisfied and satiated. Our family had a great time. We had a great dinner tonight with McKensie! We were greeted by the bar tender as Soon as we entered, and then promptly greeted by McKensie when we were seated. Water came quickly, and she was around to take our order as soon as we were ready. The wonton appetizer (amazing, btw) came out after a few minutes, then dinner arrived shortly after. We were visited by the manager while we ate (friendly and personable), and our check was brought out minutes after we asked for it. So service was 5 stars, and so was our food! Updating my review from four years ago. FOUR YEARS AGO. Food is just a great as ever. This restaurant just continues to get better. The patio they added a few years ago looks so good. I love the fire pit table, many tv's, and the bar (when open). The outdoor space has fans, heaters, plants, all the atmosphere i like to have when dining outside. Also very important is our waitress, Annie, never left us hanging even though we dined outside. This is important when a restaurant offers outdoor dining!
