As far as pizza in the Storrs area goes, this is by far the best. It's thin crust, and you truly get to customize your pizza to exactly how you'd like it. They cook it in a wood fired oven too, which is a definite plus. The sauce could probably be a little better, but overall there's not much to complain about. The ingredients are fresh and there's a ton of options to customize your pizza. I love the pesto drizzle - you can have it added on when the pizza is done cooking, and it is truly a game changer. No need to pay surcharges for specialty items here; add artichokes, roasted red peppers, roasted garlic cloves, kalamata olives, and lots of other tasty veggies at no additional charge. Vegans and lactose intolerant folks, they carry shredded Daiya - it's in a covered container, and when I've ordered it, the staff member have always asked if I want them to change their gloves. They really do try to cater to all dietary needs/wants, and I believe they have gluten-free crust available for a small upcharge. While the concept is similar to a Moe's or Chipotle, Blaze's execution is smoother and more professional. The line moves pretty quickly, since the workers are efficient in piling on the ingredients. Once the pizza is in the oven, it takes around 5 minutes to be toasted into crisp perfection. Second, the varieties are endless. I ordered the Green Stripe and my boyfriend ordered the Meat Lover - and hundreds of combinations you can customize yourself. For my Green Stripe pizza, I requested a spicy tomato base, and along with the already-included toppings, I chose red opinion, bell peppers, jalapeño, spinach, and pineapple. That's the beauty of Blaze - extra toppings are zero charge, so feel free to mix and match to your heart's content! The spicy tomato sauce was not spicy at all, a little tangy. My boyfriend's Meat Lover's pizza had a nice smoky essence to it. Finally, it definitely feels healthier and "cleaner" than your average take-out pizza. There are plenty of vegetable toppings, even if your chosen pizza doesn't come with many vegetables. Always love going here when I'm at UConn! The reward system is pretty simple and has good options to redeem when you earn enough flames (which happens pretty quickly when school is in session.) My pizza was placed into the oven and in 180 seconds it was done. They identified me as the owner and then they sliced up into 8 pieces, drizzled pesto at my request, boxed it up and sent me on my merry way. Pizza slices were sagging from my overload of toppings but I was happy with the flavors I was getting from the toppings. I recommend for those who are not shy with pizza toppings to get as much as you can. More bang for your buck. Mind I remind you $8 $8 $8 for a pizza!!! This pizza was just as good as one you get at a higher end restaurant --which might not let you custom make it AND still charge you more; 14 inches is sometimes a medium at restaurants and charge you $13 or so bucks. This is a fun place to go. We almost always get take out because of the noise level and the crowd when UConn is in session. For a very reasonable price, you get to build your own personal pizza with choice of dozens of toppings. The staff is very friendly and responsive. You can order a "standard" pizza, but it's a lot more fun to customize. ("Could you please put some extra gorgonzola on that? Maybe some bannana peppers and roasted garlic.") While the basic concept is good, a build your own pizza a la chipotle, the lack of a choice of dough really dampens the enthusiasm. There's absolutely no reason they can't have a whole wheat dough! I am all about everything grabbing the pesto sauce with the white cream sauce drizzled on the pizza and pesto on the crust. I'll get the fresh mozzarella with ricotta. I like it because I can get my daughter a plain cheese pizza and get myself something more interesting, and we can both be eating within 7 minutes. The crust is on the thin side, which is better for my health. And both the amount and quality of their offered toppings are decent--try the spicy sauce. If you don't want to create your own, they've got a menu with a few pre-designed pizzas to select from, and tweak if you'd like. They have beer (and wine, I think) for on site consumption, and a few lemonade and agua fresca selections. The only negative I can see is that it can get crowded, with a line wrapping around the room. You can order a pizza ahead of time to try to beat the line, but they won't put it into the oven until you arrive. You might as well just go in; the line usually moves pretty fast. If I can give this place NO stars I would. I will NOT support the Blaze franchise after my experience. My friends and I decided to go to Blaze for some pizza which we clearly found out was a mistake. Not only was the pizza poorly made the staff racial profiled my friends. While I was getting ready to pay for me and my friend's pizza, Alina, proceeded to tell me that I couldn't pay for my friends "Veg Out" pizza. I was confused about why because we were just having a good time in the facility. There was a line close to the door and I was shocked that she was actually turning down business. She proceeded to tell me that it was "because I saw her juuling." As I told my friend to tell her why she was being denied Alina insisted that it was because she was juuling. She was not juuling, she was just holding the juul like every other college person. We proceeded to ask a question on why the sale was being denied. Alina walked out of the store and got the cops involved and had two police officers and one state trooper come into the store. We were beyond belief. We continued to explain to the cops what happened and they too did not understand what grounds she stood on to deny the sale. The cops asked Alina to accept the payment for the pizza and she told them that "it was already in the trash." The cops told her to make my friend a new pizza because she did not do anything wrong. Another coworker said that she did not see anything happen. This was completely out of context and did not need police supervision. After about 1/2 hour we got the pizza. Alina never apologized for her wrongdoing. This was completely out of hand. I will never support Blaze Pizza again. She had NO authority to pull what she did. I am very disappointed and hope this is resolved. I cannot believe the process my friend needed to go through to get a pizza that she was willing to pay for. Embarrassing her in front a packed restaurant is completely unacceptable and getting the cops involved speaks highly to her character. This is my favorite pizza at the moment. Ordering is simple: one size, three price options (1-topping, 2-topping, or build-your-own). The ingredients are top quality, and baking takes only a couple minutes. They're perfectly sized. It's also the only pizza place around that I know of with a solid vegan option. My favorite pie is the BBQ chicken pizza, add bacon, hold the banana peppers, with garlic pesto brushed onto the crust edge. My wife builds her own with vegan cheese and lots of veggies - she absolutely loves it! Only downside to this location is that it can be cold when dining in, so bring a jacket.
