Much hype has surrounded this novel pizzeria in Davis. After trying Blaze twice, it has lived up to the expectations that its marketing achieved. Their pizza tastes great and the experience is fun and novel. Blaze's ingredients taste fresh. Just two examples: At other pizzerias many of the cheeses taste the same. But at Blaze the cheeses have fresh, distinct tastes. For example, their mozzarella cheese tastes delicate and tangy while their parmesan cheese tastes appropriately fruity and nutty. Also, Blaze has a good selection of vegetables to put on your pizza, each of which is fresh and tasty. However, the Blaze employees are almost never smiling or cheerful. In addition, the inside of the restaurant is very hot, almost definitely due to their large pizza oven. On a cold winter day, it might feel nice to walk into a warm restaurant. I would give a serious thumbs up. First time coming here and the staff was really friendly and very attentitive. When I first came here I thought oh its a pieology but in fact Blaze, in comparison is extremely past pieology in quality. The ingredients looked super fresh. Pretty good quality. The basil was on spot of freshness and the italian sausage and meatballs actually had flavor. When it came time to cook I kid you not. The pizza was actually more cooked than pieologys pizza. I wish the music was louder. Simply speaking loudly to talk to my wife isn't enough. I would prefer having to yell at the top of my lungs or to use a megaphone to have a conversation or to place my order. That would really give this place a 5 star rating. Maybe set the the volume to 11 instead of just 10. The loud music also grants me to opportunity to breath awkwardly over other people's pizza orders on the counter to see if mine has come out of the oven since I'm too busy rocking out to the loud music to pay attention to or hear the employees announce orders. I was in Davis for a meeting and we decided to try Blaze for lunch. The food was not very good and the service was horrible. We came in a little before noon and I thought they had just opened because they were trying to get everything situated. At first, i was okay with the first five "We'll be with you in a minute." We were the only people in the restaurant and we continued to be told that they would be with us in a minute. i realized that they were working on phone/internet orders and were too busy to help the people actually in the restaurant. They had been open for almost two hours already. At one point, I thought I was about to give my order, but she just walked away with no explanation. Just a couple more "we'll be with you in a minutes." When they finally decided to help us after more "we'll be with you in a minutes" they were rude and unprofessional. The lady that was barking the orders was the worst. It felt like I was asking a teenager to do their chores. They were not very helpful. The rest of my party felt the same way. The pizza and the salad just weren't very good. $3 for a water cup sized soda was the final straw. read more

Update 2::: Finally got to try this blaze again - but it did not change my view. It did seem like the team was working a little better together this time. However there were a few issues. The girl asked me what meat I wanted and I listed off the 3 I wanted. She then put one of the meats on the pizza and then just walked away to start pressing other pizza doughs without any communication to me or her fellow coworkers. A new lady came over a minute later and asked what veggies I wanted - so I had to double back and repeat the meats I wanted. Just not good communication there! Came here on a Friday night and surprisingly it wasn't packed, the line moved quickly since the pizzas only take 180 secs to be baked in the fire oven. This is a totally customizable individual pizza pie. You can opt die premade ones, but they had a lot of good toppings for the customization. Also, what's great about it is that it's unlimited toppings so of course we picked that. Some toppings I remember were Canadian bacon, sausage, pepperoni, basil, spinach, tomato, onions, peppers. There were definitely a lot more. Another cool thing was that they had spicy red sauce as an option and I believe pesto sauce as well. You can also order a thicker crust. We got the thing crust which was good, the pizza came out fresh and yummy. This was a good place for pizza. Can't give this a 5 because my favorite pizza place is still in NY and that place is out of this world good. read more

Blaze beats any other pizza deal I've seen! When choosing the build your own pizza option, you can have as many toppings as you want, and with tax it comes to a little under $8.50. Great price for a student budget! You can do a half and half pizza - sometimes I do half white sauce, half spicy red. You can ask them to mix two sauces together all over your pizza too (so it's kinda like "one" sauce). I've asked for a mix of classic red and spicy red so my pizza won't be too spicy. You can also ask them to brush pesto on the edges too! Ever since I discovered this, I've never opted for regular crusts again. If you want a nice kick to your pizza, ask the baker to top it off with arugula. Sometimes my pizza can come out a little burnt, but sometimes it is perfect.. Depends on the day and the baker I guess. Service here is fast for the most part. On some days it could be slow - I once spent 30 minutes here. Workers are always nice though. Overall, great deal on everything I want in my pizza. I will never go to any other pizza place! read more

Blaze gets points for being affordable - the build-your-own pizza was $7.95 before tax. They offer quite a few sauce, cheese, meat, and topping options. You can do a half-half if you want to try different sauces (I tried the garlic pesto and the classic "red sauce"). Post-baking, you can top your pizza with fresh arugula for added veggie garnish, dried oregano and salt. Though the pizza itself came out decent with a not-too-burnt crust, it became soggy quickly - the thin crust didn't support all the toppings I added. I also wish there was a whole wheat option (they have classic thin white, a thicker white crust, and gluten free). I also felt that the toppings were somewhat below-par. Some, like the sauteed onions and artichokes hearts looked liked they had been sitting out all day long. The spinach didn't seem very fresh because it was in a watery solution and the person making my pizza had to fish them out with her gloved hands. On a Friday evening around 6, it took me about 20 minutes from the time I entered the door to the time I picked up my pizza. The service line is fairly efficient once you start ordering. Overall, Blaze is not too shabby and doesn't break the student bank. However, next time I'm in Davis, I'll be checking out the other pizza establishments. read more

If you've been to any design-your-own-pizza places, this shop is nothing new. Make a pizza any way you want it and have it baked in 2 minutes! The one thing I do love is that they seem to have thicker, heftier crust than Pieology and Pizza Studio. There's something to be said about a pizza that has a good ratio of dough to toppings and doesn't seem like a skimpy cracker. You walk down the counter, telling the line of employees what you want on your pizza. You can choose from their pre-made pizza creations or design your own. Put as much as you want on it for only $7.75! Bummer: the gluten free crust is an extra $3. Also, they don't have whole wheat or seasoned crust options. BUT the size of the pizza was enough for me to have for another meal later on! The boxes for leftovers are adorably and literally the size of half a pizza, so they expect you to at least half on your own, which is not hard to do. I got the White Top pizza, which had white sauce with mozzarella, garlic, bacon, oregano, and arugula (that's sprinkled on after the pizza is baked). I added mushrooms and those balls of fresh mozzarella for extra cheesy goodness. The pizza was so flavorful and the garlic wasn't overpowering. They also have a good blood orange lemonade that's refillable and only $1.99! It was sweet and had a strong splash of orange flavor! Caution: it gets packed in here! Perhaps because it's the only personalized, speedy pizza place in Davis or because it's still so new, but I wouldn't encourage coming during prime meal hours. If you do though, the line does move quickly and the tables aren't so comfy that you want to lounge around for hours. The seating & atmosphere is reminiscent of Chipotle. They call out your name for you to pick up your pizza, so listen closely! There aren't waiters, per se, but there was a really nice employee who went around asking how our food was, if she could bring us anything, and who also took our empty pizza tins when we were finished eating. You don't get better service than that for a meal that cost you less than $10! It's fun, it's good, it satisfies, and if you don't eat it all at once, you'll have a little left over for your late night TV-watching cravings. read more

After the experience we had at the Davis, ca Blaze pizza, I just HAD to take the time to come write a review!! This was the first time we have ever been to a pizza place like this and the first time we have taken our toddlers out in a very very long time due to the pandemic. Right when we walked in the door, we were greeted by 3 employees (one being the manager) so the energy was very warm and welcoming from the start!! They were super patient and thorough in explaining how the whole build your own pizza works! Once we were done with that process, we went to pick a seat, my toddlers were a bit loud with excitement because well let's face it, this pandemic has had alot of us cooped up in the house for a very long time and places I have gone where children are being CHILDREN, the parents always get the death stares and side eyes and I thought for sure we were gonna be those parents who get shamed for their children being HAPPY, so I was getting the worst anxiety, BUT the manager was smiling and saying hello to them and waving back when they would wave to her!!! I could have cried happy tears ONE because in today's world, when my children say hello to strangers passing by us they are ignored like they don't exist or the "grown ups" just look at them with a blank face and keep on walking ..... So to have someone actually acknowledge my babies was such a warm feeling and that alone I am beyond grateful to her and her employees (they all smiled and we're so very kind from the moment we walked in) and 2nd ..... The manager actually came to our table a few times to make sure everything was good (oh boy was it ever!!!) And to offer us sauces for our bread! She even came to our table and brought our kiddos a treat on the house!! This whole experience left myself and my husband in complete shock at how great it was, we haven't experienced any kind of friendly customer service like this in so so long that were beside ourselves and almost didn't know how to react. All my hubby could say over and over again was that we need to go back there and how grateful he was to have had such a good experience there. As we left all the employees smiled and laughed with my toddlers as they smiled and told each of them bye and waved and as we were leaving, the manager noticed we had our drinks in hand trying to get out the door so she stopped us and gave us a drink holder and asked if we needed anything else!!! The Subway/Chipotle of pizza, this place is GOOD. They've got a gluten-free dough option, vegan cheese, and vegan chik'n. It'll always be two meals for me, which is nice. I really love how customizable everything is - I like that there are so many different kinds of sauces and veggies. I highly recommend to anyone who wants pizza with friends, because the personal pizza size, plus ability to customize is amazing. Their blood orange lemonade is also to die for. And their smores bars. Perfect 5/5 place. EDIT: I had to knock down a star because I think they need better training and guidance for their employees. They cannot seem to figure out whether to consider ricotta a topping or a cheese (which, I feel like it's obvious it's a cheese). I don't even like cheese but Blaze really won my heart over. + THE PIZZAS I LOVE how there's so many different toppings you can get on your pizza. The spicy sauce was so bomb because it was hearty like marinara but had a nice kick of spiciness to it. I had the plain ol' mozzarella cheese on top (asked for a bit less than usual) and it was the perfect amount that complemented the sauce. As for the meats, I had the grilled chicken, applewood bacon, and Italian sausage. All of them were super rich in flavor and the chicken was pretty juicy too. As for the veggies, I got spinach, black olives, green bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, sauteed onions, and zucchini. I especially loved the cherry tomatoes because they were sweet and mixed well with all the different flavors. Initially, I was afraid that since I got so many toppings, the pizza crust would give away and become soggy but that didn't really happen. The pizza was so crispy and delicious! + THE SERVICE All the workers here are so friendly! When you tell them it's your first time, they give you a thorough explanation of how to order. The city of Davis is already known for being a friendly city but prepare yourselves for a whole lot of smiles and doors being held for you! + THE ENVIRONMENT The restaurant is pretty big, having plenty of seats for big groups. I really love Blaze pizza! I have been here countless times and never been disappointed. They have tons of pizza chains with similar ideas but Blaze stands out to me. And when I asked about it, I got the standard "go away" response from the disinterested employee of "It's coming up". Well, when?
