You ever find a place that just feels....wrong? Ok, so as most of you know by now, I adore a dive bar..... like Frank Gahllager levels of love*. So when I knew I would be in the area for a while waiting for a ride, I figured I'd find refuge in a place that made me feel at home. This place should have fit that bill, but man looks can be deceiving. I'll be honest, when it comes to sticky floor dive bars, I tend to ignore ratings...well not ignore, but almost inverse the score. The lower the rating, odds are the better the dive it is. This place's rating wasn't far off, if anything, maybe a litle too high. It started innocently enough when they told me they were cash only...fair, it's only 2021 and yelp says you take cards..but yeah fair. Anywho, a quick jaunt to the corner Capitol One**, and I was back no worse for the wear..somehow. I got back and ordered a beer and a shot. In a dive bar. In a neighborhood where someone like Frank Gahllager could literally be....and it was 15$? Come on, guys. It was a bottle of Coors Lite and a shot. Never mind the fact that the place was on fire with people having...lets just say a little too much fun at 5pm on a weekday (even for me), and I was sold that this place was pretty much the pits of hell. Was I waiting for a ride still? yes. Does that mean I stayed? Absolutely, but I made sure to keep it to mugs of Bud (PS they ONLY serve Bud and somehow Stella on draft....). Don't get me wrong, it took forever to get another beer, as it was change of shift and the old bartender ran away while the new one basically told everyone to piss off for 15 min's as he set up. So TL;DR. This place is as dirty as a dive bar, has shitty booze like a dive bar, but charges like a normal bar and has bartenders that are pretty much the worst. For the record, those bartenders should have been a tip-off that this wasn't really a dive, as dive bar bartenders, as a rule, are the fucking best. _______________ *Minus the absolute rock bottom that is Frank G. **I LOVE this city, but man is this neighborhood the worst. I used to drink here when I was in high school in the 1960's. The owner was a total Harp, as was the barkeep. I was about 15 at the time. I remember one Saturday night drinking beer seated next to a police sergeant from the One-Oh-Three and a patrolman. At least I was paying for my beer. 15¢ a glass. I gave it a sentimental 4 stars, this is my local Irish pub, though, don't let the name fool you, there's nary an Irishman in sight, haha. This is a ghetto ass bar, as ghetto as they come, hipsters talk about dive bars like Mars Bar gathers the skeaviest of Skid Row but it doesn't compare to a place like this, this shit is divey, it doesn't pretend to be in a bougie neighborhood. That said, the prices are dirt cheap, 2 bucks for a draft of Bud (it's the only thing on tap, I was there last night and they ran out, so it was bottles after that). I came here for my b-day ages ago and they gave us, my three cousins and I, four Rounds of shots on the house (make sure you read that carefully, the bartender had each of the rounds with us) and charged us like ten bucks for 3 rounds of beer, if you tip (and I don't mean generously, just tip, period) then a buyback will surely come your way. The patrons are mostly locals and although they may look rough and tumble, don't let that fool you, they're there to have a good time and are welcoming, for the most part. Okay this pub used too be my hangout years ago went yesterday saw some old freinds .Bartender did not make my Margarita good,second one was better cause i let him know make it strong.Found out also no food served anymore. I have a friend who is non-binary and went to use the men's bathroom. Single stall, completely the same room as the ladies room. The bartender yells across the whole bar "NO!! We don't do that here!" When we asked what "that" meant, he told us that ladies don't go into the men's room and he doesn't care what we say. I calmly tried to explain to him that my friend isn't a lady, and he said "I don't care, we don't do that here." He kept emphasizing the word "that"... extremely rude, and FUCKING ILLEGAL in NYC. Please never support this business. They are prejudiced and extremely rude about it. read more

This is a simply good tavern. The drinks are very cheap and the crowd is laid back. The bartenders are quick and friendly. The bartenders all have their own personalities. Some are reserved and some are fun. I also love how the bartenders quickly handle unsavory characters. read more

So here's the story. This bar has been in the same location for over 50 years. It is run by an 80-year old Irish man who is friendly, legit, and doesn't take any nonsense in his place. It is incredibly clean and well-maintained. Bathrooms smell good, floor is polished,etc. The clientele is definitely older and on the rougher side. Almost everyone there is a regular. HOWEVER, they are uniformly pleasant and welcoming and it is a safe place to relax and have a beer. Don't be put off because this is a "ghetto bar." Bud and Stella are on draft, but almost everyone drinks bottles or mixed drinks. If an older black gentleman named Hollywood is there, make sure you talk to him and enjoy a story or two. If you are killin time in the neighborhood and need a place to chill, this is a good spot 2 blocks from the train station. read more
