We were visiting Berlin for the first time today. Wandering this nice little town of small shops and boutiques is quite a treat! Since we had a late start, we decided on a late lunch. One of the store owners (Treasure Chest Jewelry) recommended the Blacksmith as an enjoyable "farm to table" restaurant. It was a cold and blustery afternoon, so the place was busy. Surprisingly we were able to be quickly seated. Our server was Jess and she was very enjoyable and helpful in assisting us make up our minds for lunch. Never felt rushed, she very kind. Cool vibe from the bar and restaurant. Nice decor with a unique tiled ceiling! We opted for a Spicy Margarita and Dirty Martini...both delicious and fresh. An eclectic menu with a varied selection for almost any palette. I usually just get a burger, if I have never been to a restaurant. But today went right in for the Scrapple and Pork Belly Bahn Mi.....it wasn't a hard decision. Unique and delicious! Pork was cooked perfectly and they made the fat...delicious! Scrapple was superb...yes, superb! Neither got lost in the sandwich and retained their own flavors! My better half went for the Fried Chicken Sandwich. It was perfectly fried and the chicken was moist and delicious. Only thing we felt lacking was some flavor. The chicken was very "bland", not even a chicken flavor. Kinda weird, right? Some seasoning and spice would have been appreciated and made the sandwich better, imo. That being said, we both devoured the French fries! Hot, flavorful and crisp! Simply done, but delicious! We planned a trip to see the horses at both Chincoteague and Assateague state park and found that Berlin was a nice home base. As my previous review indicated we really enjoyed Blacksmith and nothing has changed that. We actually ended up eating here for three of the nights we stayed in Berlin. The first night, my wife and I both got the soft shell crab special. Fried soft shell crab over I nice tomato based broth with lots of vegetables. We both enjoyed it. The crab wasn't overly fried and tasted delicious. The broth was a great compliment to the crab and surprisingly didn't make it soggy. On the second night, I had the vegetarian sausage sandwich. Don't find that too often so I gave it a try. It was really good. Excellent sauce and grilled vegetables on top. Fries were good. My wife had the shrimp risotto. Large shrimp over a basil and cheese risotto. Normally my wife doesn't like risotto, but she loved this. I was able to sample her dish and it indeed was delicious. The shrimp were large and cook perfectly and the risotto was nice and creamy. On the third night I had the Seabass special and my wife had the Hand-cut Pappardelle Pasta with Jumbo Shrimp. The bass had an interesting thin cut potato base with asparagus in a Beurre Blanc sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly and I couldn't get enough of the sauce. I was such a delicious meal. My wife again loved her meal also. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was once again great. I did sample hers again and saw why she liked it so much. The service was again top notch. The servers we had were extremely pleasant and helpful. I'm not sure when, if ever, I'll get back to Berlin and Blacksmith, but I hope some day to do so. read more

This delicious and charming restaurant is a MUST when visiting Berlin! It was a beautiful day for outdoor dining. The service, food, and ambiance matched the day! We received a warm welcome from the host, who greeted and seated us promptly! Our server, Jess, was charming, professional, and very informative and helped us make our selections, which were wonderful and left us full with no regrets! The menu was vast and utilizes the local businesses. We started with an Arnold Palmer, the seasonal Sangria, the dirty local veg Martini, and the Crispy Lump Crab Deviled Eggs, which were the best deviled eggs any of us have ever had! Have been here 3 times over the last couple years & have been wowed every time! The regular menu is creative & every item we've tried has been top notch - salads are absolutely dinner size. If you can save room for dessert they're great too. Bar has good draft beer, wines & specialty cocktails. Service is always friendly, knowledgeable & attentive. Love the atmosphere too. Stumbled upon this gem while traveling around. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming, and the food is top notch. We come to this area once a year so we try a new place. You can eat either in or out. They infuse spirits to make different drinks the bar tender explained it was cool. Good is locally sourced. Husband ordered chicken sandwich he loved it had eggplant and something else he loved and I ordered their best ever cheese burger which only comes double I only ate half it was very good. We'd been here several times and thought the food was good and the service was standard. This visit we had a shockingly bad experience. We were seated outside within 10 minutes, server was pleasant, drinks and appetizers came quickly. We then waited FORTY FIVE MINUTES to get our food! The server came by a couple times to say, "we haven't forgotten about you" and "it should be here shortly. It wasn't very crowded. When the food came, my husband's steak was lukewarm, my scalloped potatoes were hard, but we were starving so we just ate it. At the end of the meal, we asked to speak with the manager. We waited another 5 minutes. The chef came out and immediately started talking. Her opening statement was, "I'll be glad when everyone goes home and I get my town back!" She told us that the ticket time into the kitchen was an hour ago, and given that we had just finished, that didn't seem unreasonable. It was hard to even get a word in! First rule of customer service is to listen. When we said that tables that weren't even seated when we ordered got their food 10-15 minutes before we did, she said that we were just mad that other people got their food first, and some dishes are more complicated. My husband, frustrated with the treatment, said, "yeah, steak and fries is pretty complicated!" She told him he was being mean and that if we came back, "she would remember us." We never even got the chance to tell her the issues with the food. We were stunned at how disrespectfully we were treated! It's a shame because we like to support local businesses, but we will no longer support this one. read more

We found Blacksmith's on our way home from camping at Assateague Island over 6 years ago. We have been going there almost every year since and the food, ambience, service and overall experience remains exceptional. It's in the heart of Historic Berlin and a special dining experience. We stopped in for brunch and although the restaurant was busy we received excellent service and food. Everyone in the restaurant was super friendly sweethearts. I started by ordering a few glasses of wine from their list and their wines are European dry and decent. I also ordered a small plate of their Bánh mì a Vietnamese crispy pork belly sandwich in a fluffy bun and they were perfectly prepared and delicious. I also ordered a Blue Cheese Nut Salad and that too was very perfectly executed and tasty. My significant ordered their special Mushroom Quiche w/salad and he said it was good but smallish. It was a perfect day for sitting out on their large dog-friendly back patio, so we decided to chill over dessert. We ordered their Peach Cobbler and a Lemon Tart. The desserts were way too sweet for me but if that's your delight, they have sweet sugary desserts. My significant enjoyed the cobbler. All in all, I would recommend this restaurant located in the Historic part of Downtown Berlin, Maryland. read more

Was served the most disgusting salad I have ever seen. It was full of rotten lettuce - big giant pieces and smaller ones that were so rotten that they were black & slimy. I was heading back to New York from a Virginia Beach vacation and Yelp came to the rescue with this restaurant. I really enjoyed my crispy eggplant sandwich, along with the fresh cut fries. My family loved the cheesesteaks and veggie burger too. The waitress Maddy was super attentive and efficient with our table of 7 people. I also really liked that you can see within the kitchen. It was a super clean kitchen when peeking in the open kitchen concept and the kitchen staff was calm cool and collected, and you can tell the kitchen staff gets along well and are happy. Also, the kitchen staff work well with the wait staff and made the vibe of the restaurant really pleasant. Overall, this was a great experience for my family and I'm looking forward to coming back here on my next trip down to Virgina with this as a lunch spot. read more

Bitchin! What a cool spot in Berlin, MD. Nestled on a back street (not that there is much else...) we find the Blacksmith. A good wine selection was just the beginning of this culinary adventure. There was a thoughtful selection with wines that made me want to return just to see what that tasted like. Mama K had the the Seafood Risotto, wonderfully prepared and not too heavy. Worldly flavor (oh yea, I got a taste) and made with properly prepared risotto (see Tony Schalob in 'Big Night' to see what I mean). Nicely laid out. I jumped into the Thai Curry shrimp - 'ka-chow!!' Spices without hiding the flavor. Our server, Anna (OK, I really stink at remembering names) was kind, friendly and very helpful in the selection. She was also very attentive to our needs which was amazing in an area that usually is rife with the 'service with a snarl' model. All in all, considering the area, this lovely little restaurant deserves a solid five stars! I would happily give it a sixth if I could. read more

We read the reviews and loved the look of the place so 5 of us decided to give it a try. The best part was the crab stuffed deviled eggs. The shrimp po boy was good. The rest of the dishes were just ok. The burger was average, Banh mi bun with pork belly was just ok due to the bun being soggy. The pork belly was good. The fish on the fish tacos was hard and didn't taste fresh. The scrapple Mac and cheese was bland. Such a cute little spot in a small town. We came here after hitting up the beach last weekend. We were looking for a dog friendly place with good food and this hit both of those marks out of the park. I got the burger and my boyfriend got the salmon tacos. The burger was really tasty, with two patties and lots of hand-cut fries on the side. The fries were excellent and the burger sauce, which was some sort of mustard-y concoction, was really delicious with the burger and the fries. The salmon tacos were really good and very large. Stopped in with the fam for a bite. Was a bit more upscale and pricey for only showing $$, but we went with it. If you price it that way I'm gonna judge accordingly... Service was solid and professional with only only one hiccup they get a pass on. Sea bass special was tasty, slightly over-charred and 'tolerably bitter' on the edges, on the cusp, but not completely murdered or overdone internally. Was more of a medium, and I'd request a temp next time even though they didn't ask. Would have loved a crisped skin but that was nowhere to be found. Could have used a touch more of the plating sauce and touch of finishing butter. Didn't regret getting it though was still above average and not a waste of sea bass. Burgers were ok. Double patty's medium, but not true smash style. The Thai vegetable curry was delicious, hearty and rich with a very nice lasting medium heat. I bet it would be even better with a protein... but that's just me. Very nicely done with still some fresh crispness to some of the veggies. I would not have ordered it 1. because it was vegetarian, and 2. because there was nothing else Thai about the place or the menu.... But my wife did and it delivered. Glad I got to try it / finish it though as it not just held up but exceeded expectations and would have been impressive in other settings too. The decor was a bit uppity or perhaps 'yuppy' to me but hey, different strokes for different folks. I guess I would have preferred something more 'blacksmith' about it ... but ok! The food and decor are great here. My gripe? Everything is overpriced! After all, this is not a fine dining place! I love the farm-to-table concept. Macaroni and cheese is the most reasonable item on the menu, although it doesn't make a meal. Salads are terrific. Soups are good, but overpriced. read more

We ordered a cheese platter and got a sliver of cold, melted Brie and scattered on the tablet seemed like the scrapings left over in trail mix bags.. 5 grapes... the bread cause it was not a baguette.. kinda stale.. when we told the waitress about the cheese platter she agreed with us.. and said in the fall there is more stuff served ... I ordered the rockfish taco and after adding lemon l must say they were good.. my friend ordered the lentil salid and the lentils were raw, hard and crunch... the fried chicken sandwich was good other than grizzle.. l was in shock when we were charged $18 for the disgusting cheese platter... some freakin nerve.. l would not recommend nor return to this over priced place.. It was obvious that the short ribs were not prepared correctly when we had to ask for steak knives. The caesar salad was warm and wilted. This was a bad dining experience. Located just off of the Main Street this place has an great outside and inside atmosphere with food and drinks to match. Loved the take on deviled eggs as an appetizer and each of the entrees was well done. Best made gin and tonic using, IMO the right ingredients of Gunpowder Gin and Fever tree tonic. read more

Came here alone for dinner and sat at bar. Can't remember the bartenders name but she was on point (she lived in Monterey, CA for awhile). I had the pickled veggie dirty martini and it was superb!! Can't wait to go back to order another. Had the Chilean sea bass special stuffed with blue crab, topped with jumbo shrimp in a white wine sauce over a bed of asparagus. Ate every last bite! Met the coolest couples at the bar who invited me to the patio for a glass of Chardonnay. Good drinks, great food and service, hip atmosphere, good vibes all around. Really good stuff here. Found this via an online thread where some locals recommended coming here, as it's open year round. It was a perfect way to end our Winter Ocean City trip We didn't see any entrees that we were interested in, but the small plates/ appetizers looked great! We chose four of them to share: Thai spiced meatballs Really interesting flavor, goes well with the jasmine rice, had hints of coconut in the sauce. The crunchy cabbage was a nice addition. Short rib empanada Very nice, simple - seasoned shredded beef in a flaky pastry shell. The salad that it came with paired well. Shrimp & grits These were good, although we wished the grits were a bit thicker and had more flavor to it. It came with three pieces of shrimp, well cooked. Pork belly Amazing, well cooked, worth the hype. Went great with the sesame noodles - we wished this was bigger, we would've totally eaten it as an entree! For dessert, we were stuck between the key lime pie and the orange-cherry bundt cake. We went with the cake, thanks to our waitress's recommendation. I think they outsource it from Nothing Bundt Cakes but it's really good - very rich, dense with lovely pops of sour cherry flavor. Went well with the whipped cream! UN-believable. We had a party of 11 and made a reservation, We were seated on time. First, I have to say that our server was excellent. She was accommodating, took care of the kids in s thoughtful way, and paid attention to our every need. The appetizers had plentiful portions are were served piping hot. The entrees were interesting, beautiful, and delicious, I couldn't choose what I wanted and asked her to bring me her favorite dish. Overpriced and pretentious. I have never used the word "pretentious" in a review. Until now. But let's start with the positives. Blacksmith offers a very extensive vegan and vegetarian menu in addition to their eclectic regular menu. The bar offers creative signature cocktails and a nice selection of locally sourced craft beers in cans, bottles, and on tap. Our waitress elevated our expectations for the meal which was to follow with her assurances that we were in for a dining treat. I certainly hoped that to be true, given the prices on the menu! The waitress did a good job introducing us to the menu and the daily specials. Every item that we ordered was tasty and nicely plated, but the prices far exceeded the quality of the product. I understand if a restaurant business wants to promote itself as offering a "fine dining" experience; I generally appreciate it, especially in a small town. However, when a restaurant offers "French press coffee" at over six dollars per serving, I expect MORE than a couple of scoops of Taster's Choice freeze-dried coffee presented in a French press pot, yet that is exactly what it was! The kitchen spilled some freeze-dried coffee granules on the serving tray which served as the damning evidence. The deceit was made more egregious by our waitress advising us to "let the grounds steep for six-and-a-half minutes" as she served it! She chuckled as she said it, as if we might have been in on the joke. We were not amused when we discovered what we were served. I was offended when the waitress questioned my wife's judgment when she asked for salt and pepper to season her meal, replying, "most of my customers are satisfied with the seasoning." She also made several not-so-subtle suggestions to solicit generous tips from her customers which struck me as rude. Their cheeseburger was the most generous portion of beef I have ever encountered in a burger, consisting of two one-third pound (my estimate) patties on a brioche bun. However, it came at a premium price of almost sixteen dollars! The meat was cooked properly but the mound of meat was so cumbersome that it was impossible to eat it as presented. I would have preferred to be served one burger patty at six dollars less with an option to upsize to a second piece of beef. As far as the setting, the white faux fur which serves as back cushioning for the seat benches around the perimeter of the dining area is a tacky juxtaposition to the rest of its warm ambience. I saw a lot of potential in Blacksmith but they failed to meet my expectations. read more

We visited on our family vacation and were looking for a restaurant to accommodate our large party with a wide array of dietary needs. The front of the restaurant has considerable outdoor seating and it is covered with fans which is so appreciated in summer. We were a party of 12, and the service was exceptional. Jackie, the owner, was also very attentive and incredibly thoughtful, making sure we had everything we needed. The food was delicious and everyone really enjoyed their meal.
