A truly amazing place! We are here while our kids were skiing on lookout pass. We were looking for breakfast but found out since there is a worker shortage they stopped serving breakfast. The waitress said she could cook a few things up and it was awesome. I had a very good breakfast sandwich and my wife had eggs and potatoes. But were awesome. My son had a sandwich and 3 cups and one bowl of French onion soup. B he would have eaten more of I allowed it. Really great food and you can tell the chef is fantastic. This restaurant is a true gem in the quaint town of Wallace. My family and I enjoyed sitting at the bar for lunch and all of us devoured our meals! I have celiac disease and was able to enjoy a delicious chicken salad. My husband said the Mesquite Turkey was the best sandwich he's ever had. Also want to add that the vibes are great here. Every staff member just seemed truly joyful and at ease. The chef (not sure his name but had a killer stache) was so calm and kind of mesmerizing to watch in his element. My family and I are from Florida and while visiting family we stopped by the small town of Wallace for some lunch and stopped at the Blackboard Cafe. Everything was very reasonably priced. I had the Filet Mignon Sandwich. My wife had the Tomato Soup and Caprese Sandwich. Let me tell you, the sandwiches were phenomenal. The bread perfectly soft and crunchy. The whole sandwich just melted in your mouth. My other family members also had the Mesquite Turkey sandwich. The food was so good that as a family who talks a lot during eating, we were too busy enjoying the food that we didn't even talk to each other. 10/10 would just fly back over here just to have some lunch. read more

This lil gem is in downtown Wallace... in an older building filled with charm. Bookstore, coffee, deli and an amazing restaurant all rolled into one. I read my fellow Yelper's reviews before we headed out for a day trip out to Wallace. What a treat! Huge menu for lunch, served 11-3 and dinner service starts at 5. We ordered a the Mesquite Turkey sandwich with a side of Caesar salad and the Reuben with fries. Both sandwiches served hot on a light hot ciabatta bread, that was simply delicious! Stopped here yesterday with my wife, mom and niece. I had the Croque Madame and my wife had the French Onion soup. The sandwich was perfect with the bechamel sauce and the fried egg. After biking the Hiawatha trail on a Tuesday we were dirty and hungry! They serve a great huckleberry shake and the sandwiches are made fresh! We ordered 2 without bread - so lettuce wrapped and they were very good! Who knew Little Wallace ID would be so busy. We tried to have supper at the City Limits Brew Pub on a friend's recommendation, but the staff was in a frenzy... seemed really disorganized. I'm REALLY glad to be honest because we never would have stumbled into the Blackboard Cafe otherwise. It was pretty full, but the staff worked it out quickly. My wife ordered the Lobster Corn Dog which was lobster and cord in an Italian beer batter, very tasty. I ordered the Seafood Mac & Cheese. It was nothing short of AMAZING! Like no other Mac & Cheese I've ever tasted. The noodles where thin and wide like an egg noodle, but not... Pappardelle I think. The shrimp where good sized and the lobster plentiful. The sauce to die for! It was like a Parmigiano Reggiano, but with other cheeses... flavorful, creamy and so delicious. Good thing I saved the garlic bread for last because it was just what I needed to soak up every drop. The waitress who served us had been there for about 10 hours, but was as delightful as they come. Kicked me and my four 80-year old grandparents out of the indoor seating area because we "weren't eating lunch," even though everyone ordered milkshakes. They did not need the seating; it was virtually empty and it was 2:30 in the afternoon. I would suggest they ask if the party is eating a meal before seating the party. Not happy with choices of meals for the Road Scholar group. All spaghetti with something of a sauce and no gluten-free option except what was offered were breakfast potatoes and meatball...and I had to ask again for at least some marinara sauce on it. Do you only cook spaghetti for groups? At least 6 meals went back to be heated since their spaghetti was not hot. The cauliflower and basil bisque was tasty but not hot! Caesar salad was a 3. Our waitress for all 20 of us was super human in trying to meet our needs... a 5 for her , 1 for whatever was not happening in the kitchen. We came here for dinner. The waiter was pleasant and attentive. I ordered the steak alfredo, it was delicious! The steak was tender and juicy. My husband ordered the fish and chips. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and light and flaky on the inside. It came with a huge bowl of fries which we dipped into the creamy alfredo sauce. After reading an article about this being one of the top 10 hidden gems to eat in the country we made it our first stop while in town. They close incredibly early and we're unwilling to seat us an hour before closing, but wouldn't come out and tell us. They chose rather to ignore us until we were forced to ask. We asked to order to go and after about 15 more minutes of deliberation, they agreed. We tried steak alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and lasagna. I don't think any were bad, but nothing was great. Mostly watered down tasteless sauces. The desert and milkshakes saved this place and garnered that 2nd star. We took out a couple milkshakes and a variety of their desserts and all of them were excellent. Anybody that rated this a top 10 in the country shouldn't be allowed to critique food anymore. read more

First-time patrons. The interior was very clean and modern but also with a lot of historical preservation. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable and respectful. The food was exceptionally good. I got the ribeye sandwich with garlic aoli. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. I wish I could offer a review or even a commentary on the food, but we sat there for 20 minutes without even so much as menus put in front of us. We made reservations earlier in the day for 7:00pm. We showed up early at 6:45 and were seated. That was the end of any type of correspondence from anyone on staff. It would have been one thing if they had at least made the effort to give us some water and menus to look at. I would have even settled for a quick "hi folks, welcome. We'll be with you shortly". We were completely and utterly ignored until we finally gave up at 7:05 and went to another restaurant in town where we were seated immediately with a smile, greeted, given menus and had our beverage orders taken. I would not recommend the Blackboard if you expect any kind of customer service or hospitality whatsoever, which is a shame as we had been told that the food is exceptional. I guess we'll never know. I ordered the lasagna and it was the best meal I have had on my trip to Idaho so far. We sat in front of the chef and admired his work. The service and atmosphere was friendly and great. Delicious! What a gem in historic Wallace, definitely worth the stop off I-90. All of the Italian classics are offered and cooked in an open, modern kitchen where you can watch your meal be freshly prepared at the bar or choose a table and enjoy small town ambiance. Delightfully whimsical spot for delicious foods! Eggs Benedict with candied bacon - need I say more? They also have regular stuff (the classic breakfast) on the menu. And beer. That also right there in the breakfast menu. LOL. We are so glad we came in before heading home from a long weekend in Wallace. The owner is also the blackboard artist. Service was great! My ribeye sandwich was fantastic as was my sons burger. My wife got a salad and was underwhelmed. It was partially a preference issue but the salad was all arugula and was overwhelmed by excessive blue cheese. Had Oreo cheesecake for dessert and it was awesome! read more

Food was fantastic. However the server was pretty rude. The four of us sat down to a table with 2 menus. We sat for 10 minutes without a server checking on us. When she finally did she didn't bring us water, silverware, napkins, or two additional menus. She said, "do you know what you want"? When I asked if we could get a couple more menus you would of thought I asked for her first born child. She said oh you couldn't share? She left and came back and gave the menus. When she came back she said," do you know what you want now that you have your own menus"? The food took a very long time for it to come out. It's a shame the service was so bad because the food is good. I can't deal with the snide comments. I am the customer and treating customers that way for asking for something that should be a given is ridiculous. read more

This will be the kind of review you think just could not be true... but it is... really! The food and service and experience were all amazing but that is not all there is to our story. My wife and I are traveling in our restored Airstream through national parks in the Northwest. We knew we would be in Wallace Idaho on our 46th anniversary so I began looking for a good restaurant for a dinner out two months ago. I found the Blackboard Cafe and its' great reviews and made a reservation for Monday Aug 30. The day before our dinner I called to confirm our rez and was told I was booked. But then on Monday morning I received a call from someone at the restaurant apologizing for the mistake; it seems they are not open on Mondays... I said I was disappointed since I had made plans so early but Understood. 15 minutes later the owner called me back and apologized again and said they felt terrible about the mistake and had decided to open up for a private dinner for us if we would come.. mind you, they didnt know it was a special nite for us...I was shocked...I thought to myself, no one would do this... but they did! We went at 6pm and were greeted warmly by Rob and Luanne. Rob was going to be our personal chef and Luanne served dinner. We shared a few stories with them about food and places we all had in common. My wife and I both had Caesar Salads.. she had shrimp scampi and I had chicken picatta.. we shared a bottle of Pinot Noir... the food was amazing... fresh and the flavors popped..the wine was great, especially for the very reasonable price.. we then shared a fresh baked slice of blueberry pie ala mode...which was too good. We ate the whole thing....We have eaten in some of the finest restaurants in the world, but none did we enjoy more than Our dinner at Blackboard Cafe... oh and when it was time for the check... Luanne said she and Rob wanted it to be their treat for our anniversary... my wife was holding back tears... not because it was free, but because Rob and Luanne were so kind..and that seems rare these days... She took care of all of us with kindness and was on top of everything. Did was great I ordered Garlic Shrimp on pasta (that wasn't the name of it, but you get the point). Heard a lot of great things about this place so we decided to try it out after doing the mine tour. It's mostly sandwiches during lunch but they have some pretty epic selections like a ribeye or filet mug on sandwich. I went with the ribeye sandwich and my wife got the special which was some pulled pork tacos. Both of them were delicious! They recommended coming in for dinner hours when the menu changes to Italian. If lunch was this good I cant wait to try their dinner out. read more

Food 5/5; had steak and chicken Marsala.. both delish. Service was terrible. Waited 20m (thought it was ok bc Labor day weekend) it was acceptable). No one talked or acknowledged us while we unknowingly waited, then we're given a seat and quickly ushers out., shortly after food arrived. Wouldn't pay that much money to feel unwelcome again. #awkward read more
