Such a good dinner. We had the crab artichoke dip and the mushrooms for starters. Both were really tasty and served with crostini. I got the osso buco which was really nice with the meat falling off the bone. It was served with mashed potatoes. The dish was nice and the flavors were good. My mom had a fabulous salad and my dad and uncle had pasta dishes (lasagna and chicken Parmesan) and they both loved their dishes. My boyfriend and I stopped here on a day trip to Wallace without a reservation. They seated us quickly and the adjacent shop was so cute we wished we had a wait to look around. The food was really good start to finish. We started with beef tartare which was my personal favorite and a caprese salad which came with arugula and a generous helping of burrata. For dinner We ordered lobster carbonara and Osso bucco and it was a toss up which dish was better but the Osso bucco was definitely suited to the chilly rainy day. I would eat here anytime and the people eating around us had delicious looking meals and cleaned their plates. Tiramisu and cappuccino were our final course and while I have certainly had better tiramisu it's really the only part of dinner I didn't think was picture perfect. By far the best spot in town for a great dinner. Much like my other experiences in Wallace, the Cafe didn't even need the qualifier "good for a mining town" as a preface. I was pleased with my meal both nights we ate her. I can't speak to their pastries or coffee, as my mornings were far too early to take advantage of their offerings. However, the food for dinner was amazing. I didn't take advantage of their wine and drinks list, but my colleague said that the options were great and he was able to pick some personal favorites to pair with the food. We didn't have reservations for our two dinners and the host asked if we had them. We momentarily panicked thinking we would be left high and dry, but it wasn't an issue. I would say if you are a party of more than 3, a reservation would be wise on a Thursday-Saturday evening. One thing that really stood out to me: the staff wasn't overbearing. We were typically coming in at 18:00-19:00 after a long day, so being tended to wasn't something I really wanted. The staff was receptive enough to our needs without being overbearing - love that! read more

Soooo.... Not sure why this place gets such great reviews, usually yelp is pretty accurate. They even advertise that the food is mediocre as you walk in the door! The food was overly salty, I like salt, but it was near inedible. In our party the fish and chips was ordered: too salty, I had chicken parm: marina was bland was surprised by the smallness of the serving for the price asked for the dish, and the cheeseburger again overly salty and the bacon was rancid. The only good part of the experience was the waitress, she was very nice. Blackboard is in Wallace, ID, the most unique little town in between Coeur d'Alene and Missoula. It's able to maintain a rugged wild west mountain architecture look while also supporting remodeled shops and restaurants that you would actually want to sample. Blackboard seemed to have a little bit of every kind of lunch food. We settled on a few sandwiches and were very pleased with all of them. They also had a nice line of tables on the outside of the café so we could take in the views of the town while chomping on your food. There were mining tours that raced around town in open trolleys. We saw them pass the road next to Blackboard but didn't partake ourselves. We were more interested in the mining museum, which was closed for one reason or another. I guess tours operators have more entrepreneurial enthusiasm than museum directors. The center of the universe, a street intersection that a former mayor said was the center of the universe to drum up tourism, is not worth it. More interesting are the many historical flights of stairs around town that take you to different streets. Instead of having a very steep street, there's a flight of stairs to walk to the next batch of houses. It was something I had never seen before and would have been more interested in exploring if I had more time and it wasn't 95 degrees the day we were there. read more

This is one of the few restaurants that are open in this town. We just got into town and both my husband and I haven't eaten much at all since we were on the road all day. So we were hungry for a late lunch early dinner. Unfortunately the restaurant part wasn't open till five so we decided to grab their raspberry lemon cake (yum) in the coffee shop area to share to tie us over until the full restaurant opened. We arrived a little bit after five and the place was already getting full. Thankfully we were able to be seated right away. Our server was very nice and did a great job making sure we had drinks, etc. The AC wasn't working so the place was hot and she was coming back often to make sure our water was filled. Anyway, I ordered the shrimp Scampi and a side Caesar salad. The salad was fine except my lettuce was a bit warm and wilted. I don't know if they put my salad In warm bowl or it was just too stinkin hot in the back. No fault of theirs since they can't control hot weather and AC being down. This kitchen is open for customers to see them cooking and I could tell this was one of those nights for them because the orders were stacked. Needless to say It took a bit for our order to come out. Both shrimp and pasta were cooked perfectly. My only critique about it was that the sauce was overly lemony and garlicky. I love lemon and garlic but this was a bit much for me. My husband tasted my pasta and loved it. He had the chicken parmigiana and I tasted his and kinda wished I would have gotten his dish. If we ever come back to Wallace I would definitely try this place again, even if it's just to get a slice of their raspberry lemon cake! read more

Midway through a road trip to Missoula, we stopped in Wallace, not knowing what we'd find. What we found was this little treasure, The Blackboard Café. Our server was friendly and helpful. Her recommendations were spot on. I had a steak and potato salad that I would gladly order again and will definitely try to recreate at home. My friends had a smoked turkey sandwich and a Croque-Madame sandwich with what seemed to be homemade potato chips. The food was tasty, ample, and reasonably priced. We stopped in for dinner with low expectations. Not a lot going on in Wallace ID on a Tuesday night. Very surprised at the absolutely perfectly prepared seared tuna and a large bowl of mussels. Lots of cheesecake options for desert, but we didn't indulge. Topped off with great service, this night ended up pretty good. This is a quaint little restaurant, it has the best food for a reasonable price that I've had in many many years. My wife got a Reuben with bacon and sauerkraut it was warm and amazing sleeping not sure what kind of bread it was but it was terrific. My turkey sandwich came with provolone cheese and some kind of a sauce I'm not sure what it was but again it was amazing if you're ever in the area Kellogg Idaho or Wallace Idaho this is a must stop and try it's an old mining town for silver. Stop by there the only restaurant that's open seven days a week they're closed from 3 to 5 to convert over for dinner. The smoked meat actually tasted smokey and quite literally melted in my mouth. Even though it's not served on rye (but instead a melt in your mouth bun), it's the best Reuben I've ever had (even better than Schwartz's deli in Montreal!). And the town is so cute. Very few vegetarian options, salads are extremely overpriced for tiny portions. For some reason build your own sandwiches were $8/sando but all the salads were $12+ and the size of small side salads. I ordered a caprese salad since there were no veggie sandwich options and was shocked by how tiny it was. Tomatoes and basil are in season right now too, absolutely no reason for them to offer such small portions when none of the ingredients were speciality. My boyfriend's sandwich also tasted gross with way too much mayo slathered all over it. Finally, my chai latte was made of cheap Oregon chai concentrate, not even good quality chai. This is kind of long overdue. When I still had my lil man, (my dog) Frankie, we took a trip to Wallace, Idaho. Most of you know this by now lol. This was a month before my lil man passed away. Anyway. Every night I was in Wallace, to make life easier, Frankie and I went to this cafe every night so I could get a sandwich for dinner and for six bucks..why the hell not, right? Great prices for amazing sandwiches! (They just need wheat bread or some kind of 9 or 12 grain bread because white bread is like...omg so bad for you and stuff! Totally said that in my valley girl accent lol) ANYWAY! This place allowed Frankie in their establishment. As many of you know, ANY place that allows dogs almost always gets a great review and 5 stars. They'd really have to suck to get a bad one. This place was so far from getting a bad review. The staff was literally the best! My last night there I ran into a girl who works there and was telling her that my dog and I were there from Boise and our whole goal (mainly mine, Frankie couldn't care less lol) was to see a moose. I've never seen a wild moose. Only moose I saw when I was there was the one hanging on the wall in Walmart....siiiiiiiiigh. So she suggested all these places and she told me of one spot on my way out of town. I told her I was leaving early and she was like ..perfect! You should definitely see one. Sadly, I did not. I saw moose droppings tho! So I know those f***ers were JUST there lol. I was there around 8am, probably should have been 6am. Next time.' Basically, I loved this girl. She was so unbelievably nice. They all were, but this one I won't forget. You truly realize what quality of life you're missing out on when you leave Boise for a week to head to the most amazing little town of Wallace. Everyone is so unbelievably nice. One guy in the stone shop was a little mean, but that's another story for another day haha! When I make it back to Wallace, I will definitely be frequenting this place again. Attached it it is an Italian restaurant, little pricey, but looks 100% worth it. Can't go wrong with Italian...as long as who's cooking it knows what they hell they're doing haha. On the other end is a small clothing shop. Very mountainy style of clothing. All amazing. Let's put it this way, I was SO sad I didn't buy more than 2 on my last night there. One of my favorite memories from this trip is being there with my special little angel, Frankie. We shared those snickerdoodles every night. Hey! On holiday, I can eat like a happy fat kid in a candy store! Why? Because nobody sees me eating that way and HELLOO! I'm on holiday hahaha! Oddly too, I'll gain weight at home where I work out every day. On holiday, I eat tons of shit food and never gain an ounce haha! Go figure lol. Frankie got tiny Frankie bite size pieces. But I'll never forget him going soooo crazy as soon as he saw me reach over to get the damn cookie. He couldn't see it, he just always knew lol. As I type this, Im literally taking myself right back to us on that little futon in that tiny cabin, sharing those snickerdoodles lol. I know that's not really pertinent to the review, but those cookies being amazing (again, I'm a whore for a cookie and a bigger whore for a great snickerdoodle lol..my favorite) and me sharing that quality time with him, make this cafe even better in my eyes. It will be weird to return to Wallace without him, but he will be with me I spirit. That's one reason why I can't wait to return and to go back to this place. They really make you feel like y'all have been friends for years. Whoever manages this place KNOWS exactly what they're doing and how to properly train their employees. 10 stars easily! This is a great place for dinner, but I was not impressed with their coffee service. I ordered a simple 20oz iced Americano, and asked how many shots is in it to make sure it would have flavor. Barista explained everything gets 2 shots. It's obvious they don't understand that with larger sizes more espresso is needed. I asked for 4 shots which is standard at any other place I've ordered a 20-24oz iced coffee in ID. She charged me 1.50 for each extra shot. I've never paid $7.50 for an iced Americano til now! Wow!! Overall really cool place. Very kitchy. Lots of vintage stuff, local books, that sort of thing. They actuly had a Barry Goldwater campaign sign up in a fairly prominent spot, which I thought was rather ballsy. My only real gripe here is I don't think they rinse their mixing cups and shake machine very well cuz my milkshake tasted a little stale. It looked like they were washing the mixing cups in a tiny sink that wasn't really meant to be a dish sink, but the building is very old and tiny and the owners seem pretty old too, so I'm sure they just have to make do. Honestly, most people probably don't even notice. So maybe just shave a hair off the score to 4.999 The girls working the counter were very nice and everything, overall this is a great little tourist trap that seems excited for you to learn about local stuff. read more

We love eating at the Blackboard Cafe in Wallace. The food is next level and consistently delicious. They have a low turnover with staff which speaks highly of their ownership and management. It's such a unique experience with the attached bookstore and clothing store. The restaurant and connecting stores are always clean and well staffed. Highly recommend! read more
